He should have expected it.
It was also almost midnight, which meant that Caelius had waited until the very last second to send the text - but at least he hadn't waited until the next morning, as he tended to do. Finding able hunters in the dead of night for a mission with Caelius, however, was like trying to find someone who was willing to stick their head in a lion pit.
Especially with that last part: Their failures will be reflected on your performance.
Thanks a lot, Caelius.
(It had all but become a sarcastic mantra in his head these days.)
Gale sighed.Ol-j-man Text to Stormy:Mission tomorrow @ 8:00am with Caelius. You up for it? iStoleYurVamps Text to Solia:Mission tomorrow @ 8:00am with Caelius. You good to come?

Her phone buzzed against the bedside table as she was shedding layers. She was up (of course she was up), and the answer was both brief and quick.kuroopu Text to Gale:if you need me (Didn't he always?)
They had been communicating through texts more than face to face meetings despite both being at Gale's house--all her fault, of course--so she supposed this was the last of it for a little while; and here she had been wondering when he'd snap about it, God bless his patience. At least some of her energy had been restored in the meantime, or at least it didn't quite feel like she was dragging herself around anymore. Stormy was by no means back to normal, but hopefully whatever this ended up being, she wouldn't end up crack before it was over.
(Didn't she always?)
But maybe a little action was all she needed to snap out of it. The surface was closer than before. And if it was to help Gale and whoever else came along, she could do it; she could make herself useful.
Stormy went to sleep as well as she could these days, curled over the bedsheets with her own blanket covering her for warmth. Still refusing to mess with things he had declared hers, still unwilling to disturb the environment of his home.

istoleyurvamps Text to Solia:Just tea for me, thanks. See you tomorrow. Ol-j-man Text to Stormy:I always need you. Zoobey Text to Caelius:Yes, sir. He arrived at Caelius' office precisely at 7:49am, slightly tousle haired and a little bleary eyed, but alert and awake, dressed in his usual coat and boots, his scarf slung haphazardly around his neck. Gale leaned against the wall just outside of the Death leader's door and folded his arms across his chest to wait for the others.
<< Any idea what this mission is about? >>
Jinhai was stirring sleepily inside of Gale's head, sounding vaguely amused. Gale tugged on a lock of his hair and sighed. He tilted his head back and stared up at the ceiling, averting his eyes from the dim yellow fluorescent bulbs.
Nope. Do I ever?
<< Just like old times, then. >>

Solia arrived, a tiny thermos and a larger one under her arm. The tiny one handed to gale she said "I got you Earl Grey- no cream or sugar though- Coffee is black." Bleary eyed, she looked a bit fatigued, though fine. "What are we gonna do? It's not kill someone is it?" She looked down at her shoes. They were cute and she'd really hate to stain them... She gave Gale a look. "I've never killed someone before." It was hard to say if she was interested in actually doing such, or was just being serious.

kuroopu Text to Gale:then I will always be there <3 A small sign that she had taken a few (small) steps forward on the road to recovery.
She appeared later that morning than the others mostly because she was always scrabbling to get just a little more sleep, given that she had yet to really fix her erratic schedule set more than a month ago; that, and she had been praying that the day go off, not without a hitch (as that was practically impossible now) but that it would go as best it could. Stormy arrived in her usual buttoned coat, skirt, stockings, and boots; the only differences were that she was sporting another beanie to cover her shaven head, and that her scarf was purple rather than her usual pink.
She had yet to give Nevada's things back to Lance.
"Hey," she greeted them, about to ask what were in the thermoses to generate some light conversation before the heavy stuff happened. Then Solia mentioned the possibility of killing people, and Stormy's mouth slowly closed back up.

At exactly 8:00am, nobody was at the office. At exactly 8:15 am, nobody was at the office, the door still locked shut.
At around 8:35 am, a very disorganized shambling potential hybrid between a yeti and a homeless person appeared, yawning several times, a bottle of Budweiser clutched in one hand. He paused, rubbed his eyes, and stared at the door and then back at Gale, then at the door, then back at Gale. A slow blink.
"S'up." He yawned again. "Did I miss anything?"

Gale took the offered thermos and gave it a sniff before opening it and taking a sip.
"Thanks," he said, the tea warming his stomach. He would have usually preferred a little of both cream and sugar, but this would do for now. The answer to Solia's question was a shake of Gale's head and a shrug of his shoulders, a sigh escaping his lips.
"Caelius never reveals anything until five seconds before he has to," he said as Stormy stepped up. He gave her a gentle smile and gestured towards Solia.
"Solia brought coffee..." he said.
Time ticked by. Five minutes...ten minutes...twenty...thirty... Gale glanced at his watch, and then at the other two with a vaguely exasperated expression on his face.
"Where the..."
But the rest of his sentence was cut off by the arrival of...
...Gale wasn't entirely certain. He squinted suspiciously at the figure.
"Mark, is that you?"

Solia offered Stormy the lid of the thermos- the old fashion way of portable cup. "Morning!" She grinned at the mist though- She did stare. A blink a few times. "You got a haircut! It's very avant-garde." The other lady was the recipient of a nod and a wink. "I like it. Keep people on their toes to recognize you at a distance... smart." Never mind that Stormy wasn't a distance fighter. Waiting was easy, Solia just taking out her phone, snapping a few selfies, (her newest addiction), playing a pirated copy of a dating sim, typing out her lastest fanfic- Then a Yeti appeared. She checked her watch. "Mark gets up this early?"

"Um . . ." She didn't have the heart to correct Solia's deductions. "It's kind of you to say. Thank you," Stormy mumbled instead, her cheeks darkening slightly as she took the lid with a grateful nod and sipped. She didn't drink coffee at all but figured it'd be rude not to give it a try anyway.
Plus it kept her hands busy for the next half hour. If it had been someone's office that was locked, Stormy would have offered to showcase her Mist skills and lock pick that sucker open. But she actually wanted to be alive thanks and was stuck in limbo with them, filling the silences with snatches of hummed tunes and trying desperately to look normal about everything instead of just vaguely sad like she had for the past month.
When she was starting to wish she actually had breakfast, someone walked in on their group. Stormy blinked a few times, then broke into a hopeful smile. "Mr. Mark? Good morning, even if you aren't. Mr. Caelius asked us to be here for a mission briefing, but you haven't missed anything. We're still, um, waiting."

Mark blinked several times more, and then swished his beer bottle. "Um. Didn't he tell you about the thing." The Death assistant made weird hand signal gestures. "You know that quest hotspot thingy? "
A long moment of silence paused between the four. Mark finally shuffled his feet. "I'm um, I'm just gonna go ahead and-"
- WHAM.
CRASH.
The first thing that happened was the entire wall encompassing the office blasted wide open, debris flying everywhere. The second thing that happened was everyone in the vicinity, so pretty much the four assembled, went flying, slamming into wall at the other side as the bits and pieces of the ceiling mortar also began to cave in.
It felt like they had just stood next to an explosion, and through their ringing of their ears, they might have been able to make out two people having a conversation, or at least one person having a conversation, and the other person just sort of not really having conversations.
"-the lighthouse. What part of-"
-"As long as everyone is safe, a pure heart is always here to help!"
Pause.
"Allan. That doesn't-"
-"BANKAI!!"
And thus, that was how the Sun lead came barreling out of the cloud of dust, looking a little ragged around the edges but otherwise himself. He posed, realized he was facing the wrong way, and then turned around to face Gale and company, and posed again. "Mission phase one is done! It is time for action two action plan mission thing!"
The Death lead looked a little less presentable, and a little more like he had walked through a pool of bodies order to achieve whatever look he was currently achieving, which honestly wouldn't have been too surprising. He began to wring the blood out of the ends of his coat. "Allan."
Allan tilted his head while posing.
"I would appreciate it next time if you kept your mouth <******** shut." This did nothing to phase the Sun lead and Caelius continued, turning towards Gale. "You are to assist the Sun lead along his mission. You will scan and locate the class seven titans, which Allan will neutralize. Your team is taking over class S mission because I have better ******** things to do than play ******** fetch. Consider this job of utmost priority, I do not want you to stop moving until the entire area is cleared. Mark will set you up with equipment at the portal. You are dismissed."
"I can make a portal here!" Allan suddenly chimed in, entirely missing the insult part (or just not caring).
"Mark will set you up with equipment at the portal."
*
At the lighthouse portal, the Death assistant checked over Allan's current gear, giving the Sun lead a thumbs up before moving over to Gale's group. "They're onto something," he explained, since there had been no explanation prior, "Have you guys heard of the philosopher's stone?" He paused, handing Gale a flashlight, goggles and a headset before moving to Stormy and Solia. "Um, not the sci-fi version, it's actual a moniker for the Creation artifact. My theory is that it is creating things faster than it can power 'em, so eventually it'll burn out. Eventually. Then we'll probably fetch it, or something." He brightened. "But hey, if you guys succeed, with that kind of power running back on the island, we'll at least like, have all our servers up again. Think of all the like, porn I can upload again."
Allan wasted no time in setting up a portal. He put on what could only be explained as a really poorly sewn ninja face mask with only the eyes showing and jumped right in.
"Hang on!" Mark grabbed a hold of Gale. "Here's the scanner. Just run it along any unusual shapes and if it pings get the hell out of the area trust me. There's Insanity titans and there's like actual insanity titans. Flare guns are at the table, just light 'em up and watch 'em go."
*
The first thing that happened when they moved to the other side of the portal was the sand and wind. It was almost familiar by now, and it immediately betrayed the Sahara.
Allan was shouting and waving at them through the storm, already wearing his pair of protective goggles, as the face mask suddenly made one-hundred percent more reasonable. He jogged over to them. "I'll protect you as much as I can, if there's anything dangerous, just signal to me."
The sand around them swirled and then there was a terrible, noise in the distance, a low shriek and a bellow at the same time. A monstrous head arose from the sand, grey and crackled, and from the head a spine made of thousands of malformed human-shaped arms.
"Stand back!" The Sun lead broke into a run, and he was gone in a second. In the distance there was a crash and a burst of light, and then the titan split in half, toppling over on its thousands of arms, some of them severed, sliding down the slope of the sand dunes before dissolving. In the distance there were more bursts of light, signaling that Allan was not the only one here.
It was also time for Gale and his team to do his work. OOC - CHECKING FOR SIGNALS. - This is a VERY LARGE AREA to cover. It is easy to get lost, so the team needs to make markers (barrier daggers, given by Mark) to make sure they don't lose sight of their original starting point. If they spot an Insanity Titan signal they are to use the flare. - Roll 1d20 and use the scanner (everyone has one) to scan for any signs. Occasionally you'll run into fallen Hunters, it is up to you if you want to bring them back. There are pieces of debris in the sand from rocks to fallen weapon tablets, bodies, tent tarp, some signs of vegetation, and pieces of sandstone. Your character can walk close to any of those and check it out. -Rolling 1d20 measures the DISTANCE IN METERS you have traveled. You'll want to make sure your characters are as close to each other as possible - if you wander too far you might get lost! Getting lost is if you have wandered a distance of over 20 meters. Rolls are unlimited otherwise. - If you roll a 20 your scanner goes off and you have spotted something (quote Zoobey and wait for my tag!) Otherwise it is up to you what you find on the sand, from fallen Hunters to weapon tablets, etc etc. You can keep on wandering around until you hit 100 meters, and then you'll want to bring anything you found back to the portal, and start again from 0 meters.

Gale decided that the next time Caelius texted him for a mission and hippie hillbilly homeless yeti Mark showed up instead, the correct answer to the questions he never asked were always going to be the same thing:
No.
Unfortunately, it was too late to turn back now, because Gale had a split second's warning to grab onto Stormy and Solia's hands and then the next second there was an explosion behind the door to Caelius' office, blasting everyone back off of their feet. Gale hit the wall and crumpled, losing his grip on the others, and rolled, coughing and spitting dust and debris. He pushed himself to his feet again and swayed, a little unsteadily, before he realized just who was standing inside of the room.
"Ah. Well."
Gale supposed there was no real sense in arguing. It was a mission, they were here to work, and even if Allan was...well, Allan, Gale would do his best to ensure not only the safety of his motley little team, but the completion - and succession - of the mission.
At least, he hoped so.
Unfortunately for Gale, all the best laid plans go to rot, and this was made very apparent the second he stepped out of the portal, the scanner in hand, to a blast of hot air and sand whipping at his face.
You have got to be kidding me.
They were back in the Sahara. They were back in the bloody Sahara.
Gale slid his protective shades on over his eyes and squinted through the blazing heat. Allan was had already run off (of course), leaving the trio of them behind as he took down the first titan. Gale glanced sideways at Solia and Stormy and then gave a small sigh.
"Let's get started, then," he said, trying not to think how much he hated this place.

To say Stormy shrieked and jumped back was an understatement. It was almost the theatrical sort, with how immediate the reaction was, how sharp and abrupt the noise, how good the distance with one movement. The only thing that wasn't comical was how pale she'd become in the span of two seconds, staring forever at Allan, hands half up to cover her ears.
She shamefully and quickly put them back down and got back to her spot, eyes downcast and ears alert; Gale's hand was a welcome presence, though her clutch was weak. Stormy was jumpy the entire time they were given instructions, tensing the moment they arrived in the Sahara. The place also gave her fear, but after her behavior lately, she found there was a surprising amount of anger also inside: at the Sahara, and at a great number of other things.
Titans had always been great acceptable targets. Words like Class S mission and class seven titans should have made her more afraid, but if anything they just made the task a little more enticing. Mark's theory about the legacy was intriguing too . . .
(It also helped that they had a titan killer with them, judging from how quickly Allan subdued that first one.)
Nodding at Mark and giving a quiet thanks for resources, she slipped the goggles and face mask on and with it became a little more neutral in expression and posture. While Gale hadn't mentioned anything about it, any mission from Caelius had to be a continued review of her boyfriend's skills after that demotion. She had to be better because of it.
"Let's," she agreed with a small nod to them both, and immediately struck out with purpose. Perhaps a little too much.
Her scanner out, Stormy's eyes kept flickering between its screen and the (hopefully) straight line she was making. The sound of the sandstorm almost obliterated everything, and yet in spite of that and the fear of what lied beneath the sand, she had a cool sense of serenity--not a very stable one, but the closest she could manage. Ahead she found strewn bodies and weapons tablets, though as she approached her scanner began to make noise.
"Think I have something over here!" she called out, wondering how much of her voice actually carried through her gear. Her other hand renewed its grip on the flare gun, ready to signal. Maybe her usual monster bait luck would get the job done quicker, Stormy thought grimly.

Solia had come to a conclusion. Several of them actually. One- Mark was gross Two- Allan was painfil Three- Caelius wanted everyone to die. The near literal force of the explosion that sent her sprawling and painfully colliding with a wall had the tiny trainee cursing the fact leads were even allowed indoors. It took her a while, grabbing her head, noting how her once proud thermos now sported a L shaped bend to it, but eventually Solia shook off the shock. Only to get the news of 'S class titan mission with Allan and by the way don't die but if you do don't think anyone will particularly care' from their lovely lead. At the very least, he had given orders that they would go with proper gear. So in that fact Solia figured she should have been slightly grateful. Geared up by Mark, who actually also made sure they had what they needed for once, news of a world famous mythological item known to her mostly by a childhood that had been dictated by her acclimation to internet and nerd culture, Solia half hoped they'd get to pose as wizards or something. But no- of course not. Of course, they were supposed to go and do as Caelius had said he'd not do- play fetch. Solia's considered their arrival to what she knew as 'the windy place of hot gross McSand in pants' aka the ******** Sahara, was met with about as much as enthusiasm as her companions held for it. None. "Sooooo." She began, looking at her scanner. "Basically find the thing. Let Allan kill the things. Don't die. Why do I always think that no one in charge ever took a class on public speaking or raising moral. I mean, it's not all grim or games- we're a good team I think." She was half speaking to herself. "Do you think this stone is a stone or it'll be one of those plot twists- 'the stone is actually a metaphor for the human spirit' thingys." The wind drowned out her voice, and in her head, Israfel sighed. This place had terrible acoustics.
