Stuck! The rain started sometime last night -- coming down hard enough to wash fresh flower spouts from their soil, and to remind some of the older kin of hard days past, when such a storm cause a catastrophic flood. It is not that bad this time, though it has hardly slowed since then, has soaked the earth and drowned much of the greenery.
The ground has been turned to slush and mud, making finding ones way through the swamp a difficult matter. Here and there, what looks like it's solid terrain gives way and a hoof sinks deep into the mud --
Or worse.
~~~~~ Kiss of Death  Death was out again breaking branches that got in her way as she was looking for dead bodies and carcasses under low growing shrubs and between the groves.
She ran around unafraid of the slippery paths the storm had caused in the middle of the night. Although it was a new day, the excess water remained above the ground's surface. Some areas were impossible to distinguish whether it was safe to step on or not. With her body, she body slammed against a young tree and only leaves fell down. "Hmm. No dead bodies yet," she spoke as she surveyed the area and noticed a lighter patch of soil with some kin fluff sticking out of it. "Maybe there will be one there!" she shouted as she leaped her way over to it.
The patch seemed to have something hidden underneath. As soon as her front hooves pounded down onto it, the soil gave way and sucked her front hooves right on in. Eyes wide with shock, she quickly backed away with her hind legs and tried to pull herself out of the mess. She pulled and pulled but it didn't come loose.
Why didn't he find a cave when Mother Swamp warned him of the impending storm. Night, soaked to the bone from the storm, grumbled to himself as he sloshed through the underbrush. Water dripped from his hide since he'd been neglectful of finding refuge before the heavy rains arrived. Preoccupied with his miserable condition, he hadn't noticed the sound of branches breaking in the near distance. Slogging along with his head down he nearly headed-butted the fluffy yellow tail end of a gray-colored doe.
Night stopped short and immediately revised his view of his own condition. There were others, it appeared, that were in a worse situation than himself. The doe seemed to be unsuccessfully trying to pull her front hooves out of a mud pit. At least he hadn't managed to get himself stuck.
"Hello?"
Death heard a voice greeting her from behind. "Don't you dare attack me when I'm mot vulnerable!" she snapped at the buck, unable to see who it was. She wriggled her front legs a few times but only made them sink in a bit more... "Get me out of here!" Frustrated, she stomped hard onto solid ground alternating between her left and right hind legs. All the stomping created little vibrations which can be heard underground... ~~~
Bedtime Story  Bedtime Story did not expect such a big storm to occur at all that night. Some of the tunnels contained water up to her hooves as she sludged through them. With much relief, all of the paths were not damaged and she was still able to walk through them. One of the tunnels took in sunlight from above. She could even sense the warm air reaching below. This did not worry her but rather, the noise that kept on shouting up above and the stomping noise that send the roof of the tunnels to send a few grains of soil falling down with every hit. She sputtered and shook her head as she climbed out from below the ground. The wet soil had clung onto patches of her hide as she made her way out. The zikwa had surfaced to come investigate what the fuss was about. A familiar heat source was standing beside her. "Night?" she called out, questioning the figure as it had a similar scent as the buck she met a while ago. "Were you the one screaming for help?" she asked, and sensed another heat source in front of him. "Oh.. a doe.." She walked up to the stranger and gave a nudge at her rump trying to push her aside.
"Have no fear," Night said quickly to assure the grey doe, "Attacking was never my attention." When the doe yelled to get her out, Night realized the dark doe needed help and not polite conversation. He tossed ideas about, but no solution, other than grabbing her tail in teeth seemed doable.
About to suggest his idea to the doe, Night sensed another presence and a familiar scent reached his pale nose. Turning to look behind him, he saw the Zikwa doe that he'd met on a sunny spring day. "Hello, Story," he greeted the colorful doe. "Creatures in peril seem to bring us together." He watched the Zikwa walk up to nudge the doe on her rump. "I think this one will take a bit more than a few nudges," said Night with a touch of humor in his voice.
The meti doe attempted to free herself again by putting all her weight toward her hind legs while she wriggled about with her front legs.
"Nghhhh!" she bucked around with her hind legs. The mud made a few suction sounds but without much progress, her hooves still remained stuck.
She was not ashamed to ask for help and turned her head around as much as she could and looked at the two kin standing there. "Help me..!"
Bedtime Story watched the meti struggle with the patch of sinking mud through her own special vision and came up with another plan to get the doe out the mess. "Night, we should find a strong vine and rope it around her thighs," said the zikwa calmly as she walked past the buck. She turned and went to look for it with her nose. After a while of searching, she found a really long vine and dragged it back to where the doe was standing. Carefully, she placed it around the doe's thighs without making her angry and got hold of one end. She mumbled out to Night through a mouthful of vine and leaves. "Care to grab the other end and pull with me?" and she started to pull. Cricket2008 Stuck Level: 43 Rescue level: 4 + 5 + 7 + 8 = 24
"Well Story, we do seem to keep finding each other when there is someone in need." Night figured he'd have to think on that later. Right now the gray doe needed their help.
Night was learning that the Zikwas were resourceful creatures. He watched the doe go off in search of a vine. After a bit, she returned dragging a long sturdy vine in her mouth. The gray doe, realizing what they were attempting to do, allowed the Zikwa doe to wrap the vines around her hind quarters. Yup, thought Night, it was better that the Zikwa doe did that part.
"Great idea," said Night, then grabbed the other end of the vine. The goal was to free the dark doe from the mud, but did the Zikwa have to bring back such a tart tasting vine? Night grimaced at the taste in his mouth, but hung on tight as he pulled back on the vine. Tightening the vine between them, he felt the weight of the mud-stuck doe.
Kiss of Death felt something long and wet reach around her legs and slowly glide up to her thighs. "What.. What is this?" She turned her head around again to see the doe wrap vines around her second attempt to get her out of the soft sinking mud. "Ahh. Good. Good. Now if that buck would stop staring at my behind and help out too then all will be better," she snapped.
Again, she pulled with her lower body along with the doe's force. And eventually, she noticed that the buck had come to help too. "Pull harder. I can feel my hooves come out a bit more. She secretly was searching around the area with her hooves for a skeleton. If not intact, at least a few bones. Death had no interest with the tuft of hair that led her into this miserable situation.
At first she pulled lightly on the vine as a way to test whether her calculations were correct with lasso-ing the doe's thighs a few times around. When Bedtime Story realized that it was sturdy enough to pull harder, her pulls became more vicious and unpleasant. With pulls this hard, and the amount of friction it caused, any kin is bound to receive red marks and soreness on their body tissues.
Bedtime Story did not care about the pain it will cause upon the other from the tension of the vine. After all, she expected the doe to be grateful to her that she came up to the surface to help her out. Together with Night, she pulled and pulled until the doe can be freed. She paid close attention to the heat pattern coming off of the doe and watched until her front hooves came into view, indicating that she is out of the mud hole.
Night and Story tugged together and the dark doe wiggled her front hooves, loosening them from the mud. He tried to mutter encouragement, but even he couldn't understand what he was uttering with a mouthful of vine.
Biting harder on the woody green growth, Night dug his heels in and gave a huge heave backwards. With a loud popping noise, the doe's hooves came out of the mud.
Kiss of Death felt the tension and tugs with the vine around her, and helped with the pulling by rearing herself into the rescuers direction. She felt her front hooves slowly become looser and looser as they pulled, reaching the surface with each pull and, finally, they became free from the sinking muddy area. When her hooves got freed, they came out with a loud 'shgloop'' sound.
She wobbled backwards as she tried to catch her balance. At last, she was free. "Excellent! I was afraid I might be stuck here all day." Death scraped her hooves one at a time into solid ground to remove some of the gunk on her legs. She then turned to see who her rescuers were and came face to face with another Kimeti.. And.. A.. Zikwa? She tilted her head, not wanting to believe what her eyes were seeing. I thought they were just myths, she thought to herself.
She paused for a moment and returned her gaze back at the buck. At least this one she knew was real. She would pay attention to the other later. "Did you see any skeletons on your way here?" she asked, and was more interested in finding bones rather than saying thanks.
As the weight on the vine loosened and Night saw the doe's hooves come loose from the mud, he dropped the offending vine from his mouth. Spitting, he tried to remove the last of the taste from his mouth.
Bones?, he thought. Did she really just ask about bones? Night's ears flicked back and forth. It wasn't a reaction he was expecting.
"No," Night said, answering her question. "I don't recall seeing any." Then another thought occurred to him, "Were you looking for someone you lost?" It had been a nasty storm, maybe the doe was looking for a family member, he thought.
Bedtime Story was rather ticked off that the doe she helped pull out of the mud hole did not thank her at all. She glared at Kiss of Death with anger in her eyes, as if wanting to put a curse on her. She walked a bit closer toward the buck and said "Night, it was nice running into you again. May we see each other later." Still puffing hot air, Bedtime Story walked past the doe and nipped at her shoulder. "Let us not meet again. The urge to kill you is too strong." She moved quickly and eloquently away from the metis and disappeared behind a big boulder. Once out of sight, she burrowed into the wet soil and went back down underground. Disappointed at his answer, she remained cheery despite her legs being covered in mud. "No bones huh? Today is just not my day at all."
It really wasn't. Before she could do anything else, the zikwa had bit her shoulder and ran off. "What's her problem," she snapped.
Her expression changed again as she turned back to face the buck. "No, I didn't lose anyone. Well, maybe just my companion. That ramcat doesn't like her fur to get wet." She went back to the topic about bones and a malicious smile appeared on her face. "I always try to dig up full intact skeletons from the ground. It's my obsession. I collect bones."
