Bio: Forty-two years ago, when he really was fourteen, Balthazar was turned into a frog by his grandfather, the original Frog King from fairytales. Like the fairytale, Balthazar's grandfather was cursed to become a frog but returned to normal after receiving a kiss from his true love, despite also being thrown against a wall. Ever since then, Bal's grandfather was convinced that the only way to find true love while also finding a perfect queen for his people was to become a frog and wait for that special kiss. It worked for his father, so why not Balthazar, too? He underwent the transformation and eagerly set off to find his love. Unfortunately, the generation he was set unto had no intention of kissing a frog when they could have, well, anything else.
And so the years passed by, and before Balthazar knew it he was passing age fifty. That was way farther than his family had ever gotten, both of which changed back around their early thirties. He gradually grew disheartened, but then one lucky day he came across a group of girls giggling amongst themselves on the grass of a college courtyard. One of the girls dared the one across from her to kiss him, but none of them ever expected the frog to change! Moreover, they didn't expect the frog to become a little boy! Balthazar was dumbfounded himself, but that was a small emotion compared to the joy of becoming human again. He was convinced that he had met his true love despite the blatant problem, and he offered the girl a life of luxury in exchange for her hand in marriage. The girl, blinded by the memories of the Frog Prince story, agreed in a heartbeat. Although that should have been a blissful ending, it only progressed badly. The two barely spoke. Balthazar was always eager to learn more about his fiance, but the girl would shoo him away or tell him to give her a minute (which really ended up with her ditching him to spend time with her friends).
As the day of the wedding drew nearer and the boy's servants found him to take care of the wedding, Balthazar tried to sneak up on his fiance to surprise her, or maybe capture a glimpse of her in her wedding dress. He succeeded in hiding, but ended up overhearing the girl gush about how rich she would be and how great her life would be. When one of her friends asked about him, the soon-to-be queen scoffed and said that she would never even touch a little brat like him.
With his heart shattering, Balthazar broke off the wedding and ran away, deciding that true love wasn't real.
Although he didn't get married, Balthazar was officially dubbed Frog King (he was unofficially dubbed king twenty years ago, when his family passed away) due to becoming human during a time of an empty throne. Also, and this is interesting, it appears Balthazar, though he doesn't know it, hasn't really kissed his true love. What transformed him into a human was a kiss derived of desperate love he summoned up, and because that wasn't the true kiss part of his curse stayed and kept him at the age of when he changed.
Who's his true love, then?
