Personality: +/- Loyal: Axel is, first and foremost, a loyal person. He loves and adores friends and family, and takes his loyalty very seriously. He has a sense of responsibility towards those he feels loyalty for, and will always go out of his way to lend a helping hand to those who need it. Axel will sacrifice his own goals and dreams to help those who need it. If you need a friend you can count on, Axel is the one.
On the other hand, he may be blind to the true nature of people he trusts. He tends to blindly follow those in a position of authority -- at least, if that person has won his loyalty. He is vulnerable to manipulation by those close to him and could be manipulated into doing things that are wrong and/or cruel. Because he prides himself on his sense of loyalty and integrity, he would be resistant to realizing someone close to him or in authority over him was a bad person.
+/- Hard-working: Axel takes pride in fulfilling his responsibilities. He won't rest until the job is done, no matter what it is! While this makes him dependable, he may also keep going when he should quit, or keep stubbornly hammering away at a problem when taking a break and a new approach would be more effective. He also tends to be a little too self-sacrificing, and will take on responsibilities that he feels are right to the detriment of his own personal goals and ambitions.
+/- Generous: Axel is a generous person who has a difficult time looking away from those in need. In happypeacetime, this hasn't negatively affected him
too much, but if/when starvation sets in, it may become problematic. He is and will be generous and willing to share what he has, but seeing people hoarding food/items to the detriment of others would probably spark real anger in him and erode his sense of right and wrong -- is stealing/the use of force OK if people are hungry and some buttwipes are holding out? Probably, BUT LAWS, but the greater good! But his loyalty to authority! So confuse, such conflict.
- Impulsive under stress/conflict: Axel wants to do what's right, always, and becomes very stressed when his sense of right and wrong and his other values come into conflict. This can lead him to make impulsive, short-sighted decisions. He likes to have a firm goal in mind, and can become overwhelmed and upset easily if he has to sort out a bunch of morally confusing things. He may do things that are rash, stupid, unexpected, or even quite wrong if he is put in a confusing situation with no firm direction of where to go or what to do next.
- Holds a grudge: It's hard to sway Axel's loyalty, but it's also very hard to get him to change his opinion of a person if he decides he doesn't like them. :L
+/- Rules rules rules: Axel has a deep respect for THE LAW, and tends to be disgruntled when he sees people behaving badly--even if they have a good reason for their actions. Over time he may become much more intolerant of rule-breakers, or perhaps he'll decide that he should trust his own morals more than laws. Or he may wind up somewhere between the two. We'll see through RP, I can see him going either way. He's kind of a jerk about rules to start with, though.
History: Axel is 20 at the time of this shop opening, living in the Shiganshina district.
Axel's father was in the Scouting Legion and didn't come back one day, leaving Axel's mom alone with him and his younger sister. They were both small children, and Axel's mom struggled to make ends meet while they were growing up. As soon as he was old enough to work, Axel started doing odd jobs wherever he could to try and bring in more money for his family.
While he loves books and has always dreamed of furthering his education, Axel has really never had the time or energy for study. He has been working his butt off trying to take the pressure off mom, pay off their debts, and basically be the man of the family.
He's a big strong dude from doing basic labor since he was about 14, so he doesn't look terribly bookish, but he is a total book nerd in secrecy. He spends his pocket change on books and dreams of someday owning his own bookstore. He recently got a job working part time in a bookstore (on top of the odd jobs he also does), doing a bit of cashiering and a bit of everything else. He hopes to learn the ropes there and put away money bit by bit as he works towards his goal of becoming a respectable bookkeeper.
As far as Titans and so forth go? Well, Axel is a pretty simplistic guy. He knows they're out there. They ate his dad. But that was a long time ago, and as long as everyone's safe behind the walls, everything will be OK. Right? Axel loves reading in general, so he has done a bit of reading about Titans, but they're not a topic he's terribly interested in. Just another fact of life.
Axel has never wanted to join the military, but after losing his job at the bookstore ("no longer necessary", and not well-educated enough to take on greater responsibilities, according to the manager), he is going to be miserable, depressed, and stricken with the realization that he essentially has 0 hope of moving up in life. He will be vulnerable to taunting about his lack of skills and money, and when hassled about it, he will decide that the military is really his only hope of getting into a stable career.
Once in the military, it will grow on him and appeal to his protective instincts more and more.
I can see him winding up in any of the three branches of the military depending on how his RP life goes. He might become a total a-hole and decide that the Military Police are where it's at--gotta keep the troublesome citizens under control by any means necessary! On the other hand, guarding the walls would appeal to him very much. He wouldn't naturally gravitate towards the Scouting Legion, but RP events might make him decide that eradicating Titans in the field is the only way to truly defend humanity. We'll see!
