[ Brown Porthask of Natask's Tea Clutch ]

Inspiration: Rooibos tea. Rooibos is a bit of an odd man out; whereas most teas are comprised of some variety of the Chinese tea plant, Camellia sinensis, rooibos (also called red tea or bush tea) is made from a South African plant, Aspalathus linearis. Technically this makes it a tisane rather than a true tea. Adopted by Dutch settlers in the Cape as a cheaper alternative to imported black tea, it spread to the West in the post-apartheid era, primarily via health-conscious tea aficionados seeking a naturally caffeine-free brew. Its mild, nutty flavor blends well with vanilla, chai, and other sweet and spicy flavors.

Appearance: Porthask is a frankly enormous, pillowy lump of a brown. It’s not that he’s tall, so much. He’s only fifteen and a half hands tall at the shoulder, right smack in the middle of average height. But he’s wide as a tank, and nothing his handler does will change him. It doesn’t matter what he’s fed, or not fed: his bone structure says this wher is going to be the size of a barge, and his metabolism says that unless he’s half-starved there’s going to be a little cushion of softness over the muscle beneath. He’s got the same sloping shoulders and fore-half heavy look of his golden mother, but lacks the fierceness; even his squashed face seems to be set into something like a permanent smile.

His color is quite plain, almost entirely without marks. But the hue itself is a pretty one: he’s a warm ruddy brown with caramel-colored highlights, and if anything the unbroken monochrome of his hide only makes the color look richer and purer.

Colour: Brown

Personality: Porthask is not bright. He’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and the drawer is full of butter knives, so take that into consideration. Don’t ask him to perform complex tasks without supervision, don’t ask him to count numbers much higher than “one, two, lots” and don’t expect complex strategy. But by Faranth, dumb doesn’t mean useless. He’s a remarkably loyal and reliable animal. Leave him in a room with half a dozen toddlers, and not only will you not come back to half a dozen toddlers with wher-sized tooth marks in them, but he will have let them climb all over him and use him as a giant mobile pillow without complaint.

This isn’t to say that he isn’t capable of aggression. All whers are giant superpredators capable of biting a man’s arm clean off. But this brown… well, he never seems to mean it. If he goes after a human, it’s not because he’s angry. It’s because his handler told him he needs to, or because the human was being a Bad Human and hurting someone else. And for all his size and potential power, it will be remarkably easy to teach him control: if a nonlethal takedown is desirable on a hunt mission, he might well be the wher for the job. Like a well-trained guard canine, his fight drive kicks in only when it’s needed. The rest of the time, he’s a friendly laid-back creature who’s perfectly willing to have his eyeridges scratched.

When it comes to his fellow whers, Porthask is always going to be… a bit of an odd man out, so to speak. He’s a naturally submissive creature for all his size, even to smaller males – unless his handler does something to intervene, they’re going to find him rolling over and letting even little blues pick on him. He’ll be deeply reluctant to actually throw his weight around or show his teeth. He’d much rather stick close to humans, if he can. Humans have opposable thumbs, and sometimes food, and they talk and say nice things to him! What’s the downside there?
