I... well, to quote another sci-fi franchise that disappointed after too many expansions, I have a bad feeling about this.
I was under the impression that 7th Edition was basically going to be incorporating aspects of Escalation, Stronghold Assault, and Death from the Skies into the core rules and re-balancing them, since they basically stretched and beat all the main rules to death. After seeing how thoroughly the Imperial Knights took the rules out behind the shed and did family-unfriendly things to them, it seemed like a foregone conclusion. The focus of the games I've seen has changed to "kill the Super-Heavy", and everything else was marginalized. The rules for these units had to be altered to make them suitable for small-scale games.
Instead, it feels like GW basically gave up, admitted that 6e (and 5e... and 4e...) was a mistake, and is pushing out a more free-form, chaotic product. If anything, just from that one snippet in the article, it looks like they basically did the opposite of what I expected and are basing the new edition on Apocalypse. The structure is being ripped out of the game with the FoC being made optional and, presumably, Apocalypse units being thrown into standard games... well, I don't know what to think anymore. Other than I'm going to see eight Leman Russes and a Baneblade coming to Purge the Alien, and the Relic being ignored as 14 Carnifexes eat everything in front of them. Or that most of my Necrons will never see the light of day again now that I'm going to be forced to field Imotekh, a squad of Warriors, and 8 Monoliths in a 2000-point game just to remain competitive against the aforementioned tank-rush and carnifexes. This isn't the game that I want to play.
Something tells me that the negative feelings I'm having are the right ones. Especially because 6e is over, and it's been on the shelves for less time than D&D Next has been in playtesting. Which doesn't bode well for WH40K 7th Edition.
I hope I'm wrong. I really, really hope that I'm wrong. I've been through two edition change-overs before, and I never felt this negative about it.

Rumours flying around has been referring this to be an updated-version of the 6th edition, to go along with the "Living-Rulebook" rumours. ninja Some rule tweakings, new ones and Escalation and Stronghold would be added to the book, along few other books and dataslates aswell.

Definitely not going to spend any money on 40k until this gets sorted out, cause if that's the case and I have to start bringing ridiculous bullshit out to be able to win...Yeah...It's already bad enough I have a hard time beating Eldar as it is with the Wave Serpent spam...

Ociluce I hope I'm wrong. I really, really hope that I'm wrong. I've been through two edition change-overs before, and I never felt this negative about it. Sadly, you're not wrong. However, you can always say that you do not want to play Unbound armies, or Escalation units. Despite these being "official" now, you can still tell your opponent that no, you do not want to play a game like that. The idea of Escalation, while adorable, was ultimately a bad, bad idea. The Escalation book itself is a joke that assumes that players play a gentlemanly and friendly game without D-weapons. But seeing as those models sell like hotcakes.. Remember, this is a company that sells miniatures first. These rules and armies are nothing more than a nuisance to them, as they aim to sell to collectors first, gamers second. Which is a shame really, as the minis are great, they just need the rules to properly back them. Asmondai Rumours flying around has been referring this to be an updated-version of the 6th edition, to go along with the "Living-Rulebook" rumours. ninja Some rule tweakings, new ones and Escalation and Stronghold would be added to the book, along few other books and dataslates aswell. I've got a feeling we're well past that point, with a completely new phase and play style thrown in for good measure. AllSummedUpNJazz What the actual ******** GW. Seriously? Viking style funeral for my necron army seems to be on the agenda for the the near future. sad E-bay might be a better option if this edition turns to be that horrible. ninja

I've got 5000 points fully painted (steam punk theme) with custom bits like red rods instead of green watch gears ect. I put a lot of time and love into them Even made a short comic about their tomb world. I would rather retire them gloriously than see someone else take credit for them.

I'd hang on to them and wait for 8th edition to come out next year at this rate. I also love this new "unbound" idea. I can finally play a 2,000 point game and field 4 Baneblades.

Do you think it's going to be one of those D&D things, where people just don't play the new edition and stick to the old rules in their own gaming groups?

DarkElf27 Do you think it's going to be one of those D&D things, where people just don't play the new edition and stick to the old rules in their own gaming groups? I dunno...I think this is slightly different, but it would depend on if everyone unanimously hates this edition. I personally don't like the unbound idea, it sounds like opportunities for people to just cheese a lot and then nobody will want to play those people so it'll never get used...Soooo...Kinda seems like a pointless idea in the long run.
