Sitting upon the window ledge was a small box, partially open to reveal its contents: a tidy stack of papers; a stack of envelopes, all stamped, all addressed to the same person, the writing in an extremely clean block script; a pen that has been decorated with a small ghost charm dangling from its end. Atop the stationery was a letter, in the same writing, addressed to…

To the one who finds this

Hello.
My name is Reese and I would like to receive letters. I have provided everything you need to write to me. If you do not want to write to me, please leave this where you found it as I like the view from this window.

Thank you if you send me letters,
Reese Cage

ps : I will send you letters in return.

Zar was certain he'd never seen the box on the window ledge before, he had a very good memory for that sort of thing. Picking it up, he checked through its contents, eying the pen with curiosity before reading the letter included with the rest. He smiled to himself. It was certainly something he was suited to do, he'd stopped filling in anything for his father, stopped doing almost anything that involved paperwork, but writing letters was a harmless activity, it was not a heavy chain around his throat.

He took the box with him back to his dorm.

Later that day he sent off a letter to the individual detailed on the envelope, his own dormitory's address included. Everything about the letter was carefully considered, from the perfect penmanship to the paper of the letter itself, taken from Zar's own store of parchments, scented faintly with jasmine and edged carefully by hand in gold leaf. The ink itself was startlingly dark, a rich solid black which looked more like void holes in the page than ink laid on it.

Quote:
Dear Reese,
It is lovely to have someone to whom I can write. My name is Zar, and I surmise that that is a decent place to begin my letter. I am an Incubus - a demon. In case you are not well versed in the different breeds of demon, my particular kind is focused on a very narrow band of carnal desires. Sexuality is my true domain I have come to realize as I mature. But do not worry, I keep business very separate from my correspondences. When I was younger I allowed myself to be swayed by my father into thinking that all there was to life was paperwork, that the only thing I could ever be was a pen-pushing secretary. It took friends and a few good knocks on the head to make me realize that I was exactly who I am rather than who he said I should be. And what I am is an Incubus. So that is that.

I am in third year at Amityville at this point and I live in the demon dormitories. My business partner is named Barth and I am not sure what my friend Calder is to me at this point, if it is just a friend. I am part of his herd regardless. He is a kelpie. I had a boilfriend once, his name was Nuru and he was a Barghest. He is a weapon now, he belongs to a hunter. I know some people say that hunters aren't real, that they are made up, but I've seen them, I've been on their island. They did something to me there, a tag they called it, I don't know if it is still there or if it was just to frighten us. I digress.

I tend to ramble when left an open letter, what year are you in? What do you like about the view from that window? Is there anything else you would like to know about me? I am interested in hearing from you too.

Yours Sincerely,
Zar

Getting mail was a rare treat.

Getting this piece of mail was an unexpected treasure.

Before even reading it, Reese spent a long time considering the the texture and quality of the paper used, the edging that glinted prettily under the light, the elegant strokes of rich dark against the parchment. It even emitted a lovely scent. After hours of meticulous examination, the ghost was no longer sitting but floating an inch off her seat, hair and clothes lifting merrily around her.

Finally, with solemn curiosity, she began to read.

It was a very good letter. She would have to take time to make hers acceptable in turn. The response would come a week later, Reese's writing even more meticulous and clean, at first glance passable as a printed book page. She didn't have the means for gold edging, so instead, the same careful, steady hand was applied to drawing a geometric border around the page.

Dear Zar,
I am very pleased with your letter, it is of excellent quality and I will take great care in its keeping. I like the window because the arrangement of the courtyard makes the people crossing it walk in interesting patterns. It is not efficient, but I think it may be lovely.

I am glad you found who you are. I have no parents and am "new". I am still still determining who I am. It is quite a process. I looked up Incubi, but I think I may need to read other books to fully understand. I like all the rules that demons have, it seems like a very orderly type of existence. I am a ghost, a Lemur, I have been told. It is not terrible, but it would be nice to have a past and more memories. The mind seems very unreliable when there is so much left blank. I try to keep my memories elsewhere now, just in case.

I am a first year. I awoke last Waxing October, and have been here eight months. I have started making friends, I believe a have three now, as well a terrible enemy. I have not heard of hunters before and the information at the library is inconsistent. It was very upsetting, books should not be inconsistent. I'm sorry to hear your boilfriend is a "once" and not a "now". Being a weapon sounds purposeful but possibly not pleasant. What kind of tag would be frightful?

What kind of business do you have? I have no business, but I think I may start a club. What classes have you attended, are there any you would recommend? What things do you like? What did you use to make the paper smell nice?

Thank you for writing me,
Reese
