Name: Yevalee
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Rank: Candidate
Appearance: Yevalee is pretty and candidacy hasn’t done a thing to change that. His hair though now quite short from the once nearly knee length expanse of warm strawberry blond is still glossy and thick. His skin is fair though dusted with noticeable freckles across his cheek, nose and shoulders. With slender wing arched brows, bright hazel iris within almond shape eyes and rather plush lips some have to question how Yevalee managed boot camp.
He is tall, at five foot ten he has height going for him at least, three years of candidacy though has failed to put much muscle on him. Yevalee remains stubbornly slender with a hint of width in his shoulders.
Personality: Calm, collected, and composed, Yevalee is posed individual that answers challenges with polite words and an impassive face. He has a control to his motions, a firm grip and balanced. It is expected that Yevalee to carry himself in a manner fitting to a merchant ‘lord’ and candidacy hasn’t managed to knock him down. He doesn’t want to disappoint his father or sully his family. There is a touch of vanity there, mixed with a practically. He certainly misses his long hair for its silkiness and its silent proclamation of rank. The bright rich colors of his tunic and fine cloth breeches and less scratchy bedding. He can stand the world weary greys of the candidacy uniform, it is tradition and even though it is ugly, it is practical for such muddy work.
Though look out High Reaches, when he impresses or ages out it is once again bright clothing and long hair. Yevalee loves attention and with his parentage he tends towards subtly, drawing eyes to him with expensive fabric, his composure, the length and health of his hair. He is defiantly not one to follow the ideas of rider servitude. While many of his fellows are excited about possibly impressing and finding their bond partner his dream at the moment is finally having his hair back. Probably because it is a certainly that he can get his hair back.
Engaging and bright, Yevalee is genuinely empathic and interested in people’s day to day life. He really wants to know how things have been going, how is your mother’s health, isn’t your sister getting married in the next seven days? Confident, with a warm politeness, and rapt attention span make him a rather pleasant to have as a student. He certainly flatters his conversational partner and is a habitual flirt when speaking one on one with individuals outside of polite company. He is properly polite when speaking to the Holder lords, but he is at heart a Merchant’s son and that means knowing people and being comfortable and making people comfortable in all ways of life.
Generous, Yevalee enjoys gifting people with little things that he works on. Carving and painting is his hobby, and he makes small things, buttons and toggles, hair combs and small charms out of bone, shells, and antler. He gifts to people he likes, people he would like to get closer to because of connections, people in need. He likes giving gifts, though finding time is difficult. He is generous with praise and complements and it is all wrapped in the slightest hint of manipulation and quid pro quo.
Behind everything is an agenda of sorts, the son of a merchant, Yevalee knows that one you can never have enough contacts, and two you can never have enough dirt on people. It is very much a fact of life. Information is very much a weapon, just as much as a sword - which he loathes dearly- or a bow. Manipulation is a skill instead of a flaw to the family and he know the value of being owed.
Unmotivated, Yevalee could easily go places if he stepped outside his comfort zone.
He likes people, likes making connections, smart enough to use those connection and does, he is a merchant’s child after all. He is bright, and has determination, even if it isn’t disappointing his father. The thing is he grew up that way, expected to be a socialite. Expected to be the center of attention, to have eye judging him and he revels in it.
He certainly isn’t lazy by any means when it comes to performing jobs, but he does what is expected of him instead of pushing to do more. So, in long term planning, Yevalee plays his strengths. He does not want to give orders, he shies from responsibility of others. Does he want to be responsible for the weyr, heeheh ooh no. Not at all. The first three wings are very elite, and all combative base. Could he managed well in them? If he was motivated to actually practice and better his combative training… maybe. But he is content to let it lie. Instead he is going to play things he knows he could be good with minimal amount of work on his part, such as courier work or diplomatic, though that tends to be set to the veteran wing and he certainly has no desire to end up crippled.
History: Yevalee is a twin, his darling and now married sister Ayna was born in the middle of winter, certainly not a time anyone cares for children to be born, to a couple in Shona hold, a coastal hold beholdened to High Reaches. While small and a bit early, the twins were surprisingly healthy newborns. It was their mother who suffered, she never quite recovered afterwards their birth. Their father had prepared, finding a wet nurse and arranging a competent midwife in attendance. He had lost his first wife and a child to improper care, his second wife to illness, and Yanne he had married because he loved her and no other reason and he wasn’t going to lose her to.
Shona hold is a large hold, built on the coast line of the mountain and industry tends to revolve around fishing, pearls + mother of pearl harvest, and harvesting of unique hides of large sea life. – think rawhide leather from rays and sharks – and used for hilts of swords and knives. (Aquatic tunnel snake hides / does pern have rays and sharks?)

Shona holds insolation was probably a blessing to Yanne and Levan, as the tension with Ruatha boiled over. The twins end up thriving, bright and quick, and was not young causalities of war.
Levan quickly set them to studies befitting their station in life. Etiquette and dancing, history, literature, and law. Yanne was delicate and frail but quick to smile and praise her children and Levan gave time, slowly passing his empire to his eldest son and enjoy a bit of free time with his youngest children and occasionally his grandchildren. Levan didn’t approved overly that Yevalee and Anya had a habit of switching clothing, but it was something they grew out when they were about eight.
Yevalee was most involved and close to his eldest half sibling Lorn, as his middle sibling Larn was a wher candidate in High Reaches and known only through the occasional letter or message. Lorn was married with children of his own, so the birth of younger siblings did not cause tension. He was actually pleased for the old man to retire and let him assume more responsibility.
Levan supported Yevalee’s hobby in carving. It might be a good fit for his youngest son, his eldest inheriting his position and his second in the wher cavalry. Yevalee certainly had an eye for detail, color, and design but did he really want Yanne’s son to be something as common as a wood carver? Ayna hobby in seamstress was met with much the same attitude. Sewing was very much the proper work for a young women and embroidery certainly could be a selling point in assuring her a good marriage.
Yevalee was rather sheltered during the dragon plague. He had never met his brother or his brother’s wher so the plague didn’t affect him on a personal level. His father was tense, often gone but comforting when he returned. His mother had never been overly social, but the next three turns she hosted knitting and quilting circles to support others. He was told that there was a sickness among the dragons and things would be tight for a few passes.
Time passed and when things leveled out, Levan had a to make a choice. Levan hemmed and hawed and finally relented and took Yevalee with him and his eldest to a meet when he was twelve. If Yevalee didn’t show a knack for the family trade, well, he could afford to have an artistic wood carver for a son. If he did, he could see about finding a nice girl for him to marry whose family needed a man to take over the family business.
Yevalee took to socializing with the grace and deadliness of a spotted feline. He was polite, bright, and Levan only had to reprimand him once for changed behavior. Yevalee certainly had a love for pretty things, not a greed but a wistfulness that seemed to suit him. Yes, his son certainly blossomed in attention, working social circles and receiving a few rather expensive gifts through a mix of flattery, warmth, and flirty manipulation. But, as much as his son worked social networks he didn’t live up to making any sort of important choices. He surely could make a decisions on small things, but set with a problem make or break decision he crumpled.
So when the dragons came for a search, Levan suggested Yevalee consider standing. A dragon rider certainly would bring much more standing towards their family name. It was a stroke of luck that Yevalee caught the rider’s eye, perhaps destiny, but Levan could say that his son was a candidate and perhaps candidacy would force his boy to make a decision. Get some motivation, take a bit of responsibility.
Yevalee entered candidacy with just the smallest inkling of what a dragon rider was about and found it a bit brutal early on, well completely brutal. His hair was shaved and he was dressed in this horrid gray and they ran laps. The thing was, though it was horrible and certainly trying and frustrated it wasn’t so much that he couldn’t manage. It was physical work, and he wasn’t use to the type of physical work, but it was sort of like learning to ride a runner. It got better. He didn’t get to grow his hair back, but in this muck, he was practical enough to accept is as a blessing. Same with his ugly clothing, he certainly did want to drag his nice clothes through such filth.
Self-defense and combat was the worse. He hadn’t been fond of his sword lessons at home, mostly because he wasn’t good at it. Yevalee was a bit better with hand to hand combat and defense, agility and speed making up for his lack of bulk. Archery was likely the best part of combat training.
