Dark trails followed the mer mare as she struggled to keep moving forward. The gashes on her flank told the story, a shark attack, sudden and unexpected as she'd been trailing a school of sardines trying to catch them in a mesh net. She knew that she shouldn't have been that far out in open water, but she'd needed the little fish for one of her remedies so she'd had to risk it. Now she'd paid the price for her foolishness. Her bag slung across her chest felt heavy and she wished she could drop it, but the contents were priceless to her and wouldn't be easily replaced so she kept moving forward letting it's weight, drag her down to the seabed, even though it barely weighed anything under normal circumstances.

She pushed herself, tail moving in powerful strokes, even though it was just making everything worse. She had to find somewhere safe to tend to her wounds, and she was too afraid of more sharks to stop, even though the one that had attacked her was dead. There had to be somewhere...she stopped moving, pain lancing up and down her body and she just hung there in the water letting the currents push her a long. In the distance she thought she saw something...or someone...Friend or foe she couldn't tell, but she was in to much pain to care and found enough strength to push on and at least hope for a quick end if it came to the worse.

He smelled the blood in the water before he saw it and the pale mare whose wounds oozed it - it had a tang that the saltwater did not normally hold, like the taste of the copper metal he'd bitten shortly after his shell had opened (it had been shiny and his self-control had been... lacking). Fear lit up visceral in his gut when he caught the scent in his nostrils where he floated at the edge of the reef. His first reaction was to get away, to flee back to the safety of his nest, his elders, but something stopped him. He was supposed to be meeting his friend for a clandestine treasure hunt, but if there was something out there that was hurt -

That was when she came into sight, and Eoin unintentionally inhaled. The water made it halfway up his nose before he could snort and cough it back out, but it was enough to draw attention to himself. Doing his best to hold what was left of his air, he curled his tail and paddled forward, toward the blue-and-white mer, bleeding from an angry red tear in her side. "Miss, miss!" he called, not quite sure what he was doing, but knowing that he had to help her somehow. "Come here, just a bit further, let me help you!" He was already halfway to her, and she seemed to be suspended motionless in the water. This was not going to be good - how was he going to get her to the reef if she wouldn't move?

His fins were starting to hurt, but he was almost there, just feet from her now, his tiny form seemingly made even smaller as she loomed over him. "I'm Eoin." Flurry always said that introducing yourself was good, even if the person you were talking to couldn't hear you or talk back. "Should I go get somebody to help you?" Even if she said yes, he wasn't sure that it wouldn't be too late; the water around her was pink in the sunlight streaming down from the surface, crimson the closer one got to her. "Or could you come with me? I know a healer."

Keeva looked at the little seathi, eyes full of pain as she managed to nod, only half comprehending the words being spoken to her. "Help...?" she trailed off and then flicked her tail moving forward again blindly towards the reef. "Yes..." she bobbled up and down in the water as she swam unable to hold herself at the same level for more than a few seconds.

Her hooves drug slightly in the sand as she dipped down low enough, which caused her to jerk and swim a little higher with a hiss. Where was she going again? She didn't remember. Hadn't the little one said something about a healer? Everything was foggy in her mind and instead of trying to follow the multiple trains of thought just focused on moving her tail, up, down, up, down, and following the little black spot that she knew was a foal, but refused to look like anything other than a blur. "Soon...?" she managed in a harsh whisper. She wanted to stop moving, make everything stop hurting.

"Okay, good, that's good, keep moving forward, he lives just at the edge of the reef here..." His words were quick and breathless as he scooted forward ahead of her, eyes always on that red rent in her side. It was scary, looking at it. He'd thought it was the end of the world when Teagan had stabbed him with her horn two days ago... Which was what he got for playing with her. She forgot about the pointy thing on her head way too often. Eoin, on the other hand, was ever aware of his - because it wasn't something he'd ever seen on another seathi. It was what made him a Narwhal. A proud Narwhal. Whatever a Narwhal is.

As the massive mare hissed aloud, Eoin turned his attention back to her. Her voice was strained, and at her half of a question, Eoin looked frantically back over his shoulder. "Soon, just a little further." It was just a little further - maybe twenty yards, close enough to holler. "I'm gonna yell for help, sorry about your ears," he said quickly, and then, "FLURRY! Flurry, help, she's hurt! HELP!" For the second time, he fought the reflex to draw in a breath. I'm going to choke. "I have to surface, I need air, he should be here in a moment, don't worry." Tail fin flipping erratically, Eoin strained toward the surface. When he broke through, water splashing everywhere, his mane sticking to his face, he took a deep breath and dove again, lungs refilled.

A little blue-and-white shape was making its way toward the larger blue-and-white shape down on the seafloor. Good, he'll save her, Eoin thought, slowing to a comfortable pace. His tail was going to cramp soon if he didn't ease up, and that wouldn't be good for anybody.

Teague was cutting and collecting long fronds of kelp for bandages - the boys were notorious for scraping themselves on wooden planks and stag corals - when he heard the shout. It was high-pitched, a little foal's voice, calling his name, and that made him drop everything. Well, not everything: he still carried one long strand of kelp in his mouth, dragging it with him toward the little voice. When he heard she's hurt, he looked around, worried. The owner of the voice (it had to be either Eoin or Lorcan, he was sure of that now) was nowhere to be seen, but directly ahead of him was a mer, white and blue like that set of strange disks he'd found in one of the shipwrecks when he'd been standing guard, all decorated in swirls. But something was off about her, something didn't fit the pattern...

She was bleeding. Oh gods, she was bleeding. He tried to say, "hold on," but it came out a muffled hum as the sound hit the kelp in his mouth. He swam faster than he had in a long time, his tail working furiously to get out to her. When at last he reached her - it seemed so long, too long - he wrapped the kelp around his legs to hold it in place, spitting it out so he could speak to her. "My name's Flurry, I'm a medic. I need you to hold still - I'm going to wrap this kelp around your wound. It will hurt, most likely a lot, but it will staunch the blood. Can you stay still for me?" He didn't wait for her to answer, couldn't wait for her to answer, he was already moving to her side. Nudging the kelp beneath her body and letting the end of it float up over her back, Flurry wrapped the kelp around her once, twice, five times over itself until he reached the end. Her delicate fins were in the way, but what were a few torn frills to a big torn side? Cinching it tight - and doing his best to do it slowly, so maybe the fins would fold instead of tear - Flurry tucked the end beneath the rest of the bandage.

He was out of breath. Well, not really, he'd gone up for air maybe an hour ago. But he was buzzing with adrenaline, tired from the exertion of moving so much so quickly. Floating over to her front, where he could see her, he tried to see under her mane. "Can you hear me? I'm done, it's over for now. I'm Flurry. You're safe now."

At least he hoped she was. The ordeal would not be over until the wound was healed, the danger of infection and parasites past. She could at least dwell in the Grail for now, unless she took off... But what was she carrying around her neck? It seemed heavy, dragging downward... But there was nothing he could do about it. If it was heavy to her, it would ten or twenty times so to him. I hope whatever it is is worth it.

Keeva didn't even flinch when the little foal started yelling for whoever this "Flurry" was. She just continued her mindless movements forward, only noting in the back of her mind as he swam off to get a breath. Did she need a breath? No...she'd surfaced earlier in the day, but maybe...

Her attention was diverted by the sudden appearance of another seathi, this one white and blue not unlike herself, although with much different patterning. She tried to focus on what he was saying, but in her experience it would be similar to whatever she'd be saying at this point. "Don't move, there will be pain, but it will help" the healer's mantra as she jokingly called it. Instead her mind kept drifting off to think about how easy it would be to loose him in open water, his markings breaking up his form.

She held perfectly still and only flinched involuntarily as he tightened the kelp he'd been carrying around her body, side fins folding close to her side, uncomfortable but definitely nothing compared to the searing pain that lashed up and down her side. She wanted to tell him about the jar in her satchel, any number of things in her satchel really that he could have put on the wound to help the healing process, granted some of them were worthless unless she could beach herself and give them time to dry and form a seal, but he seemed to know what he was doing.

As he moved in front of her she tried to get her eyes to focus on him and actually comprehend what he was telling her. It was no use. Everything sounded strange and muddled like they weren't even speaking the same language. She fidgeted just a bit trying to get her satchel to stop dragging her down to the sea bed, but gave up. "...Breath...?" she managed in a voice barely above a whisper, and didn't wait for a response before struggling up to the surface.

Breath. The word shot through him like ice. She needed air, and she was wriggling upward before he could process the fact that she was moving. "Can you drop the bag?" he asked, flicking his tail to catch up with her. She was in no condition to be swimming, let alone with weight and in the opposite direction of the natural drift. "We can pick it up later, when you're stronger. It will make the ascent easier." But he didn't know if she would listen to him, if she could hear him... Hurrying to eye level with her, and then past it, he tried to get in front of her. They hadn't gotten very far yet; there was a lot of distance between the floor and the surface, even near the reef, and she was slow, so painfully slow... "We can pick it up later," he tried again. "You can drop the bag, it will be fine where it lands until you're stronger." He hovered in front of her nose, propelling himself backward toward the surface with each stroke of his tail to keep himself from bumping into her. "Eoin will keep an eye on it for you." The colt's tail fin was swishing nearby; he could hear the familiar swoop of it against the water. He better back me up.

A flicker of movement below him caught his interest. He'd been watching Flurry and the white mare, but at some point his eyes had glazed over and he'd spaced out. The white mare was vertical now, moving upward, with a green bandage tight around her body, and Flurry swimming before her. And Flurry was saying something, telling her that Eoin would do something... Swimming frantically closer, Eoin nodded vigorously. "I will, I will! I'll take care of it!" What was he supposed to be keeping an eye on? It was then that he noticed her struggling beneath the weight of her bag. Oh. Well, that shouldn't be too hard. "You can drop it if you want, I'm here."

She spooked a little as the adult male swam in front of her face as she moved towards the surface. He kept talking to her, but her brain refused to put things together. Although from all indications they were talking about her bag and they wanted her to...drop it!? The thought made her blood go cold, there were to many things that could break! Or worse crush the waiting foal. Her whole life was in this bag!

She managed to shake her head and then broke through to the surface getting a breath, her tail lashing to keep her above the water, trying to ignore the searing pain that lanced up her side. She felt her tail give out and she managed one last gasp of air as she sank below the waves again and slowly spiraled down towards the sea floor. She managed to stop herself from crashing, but only barely, her hooves scraped deep ruts in the sand. Her satchel landed with thud, and several clinks from the containers inside, and there she stayed like a ship at anchor not moving further.

Flurry got out of the way just in time for the mare to break the surface and take a breath - and he was forced to surface alongside her. The way her tail was thrashing, if he got to close to it, she might just brain him on accident in the chaos. The herd would be out a medic, and so too would this lady. Sucking in a breath, he followed her as she sank back to the bottom. Flurry prayed that she would make the landing; if she hit the seafloor wrongly... She could break her ribs, her legs, her spine - anything. Her wound would reopen, and then he would have to explain to George and Illy why Eoin had witnessed something so tragic and horrific.

Even as Flurry's worst case scenarios played out in his head, though, the mare put her hooves out, saving herself from landing too hard on the seafloor below her. A few bubbles escaped him, freezing in place - he hadn't even realized he'd blown that type of bubble as he exhaled. It must have been the stress of it all. Shaking his head, Flurry ducked beneath the small bank of bubbles and made his way down to where the mare had sunk herself in the sand. The things in her bag clinked, and Flurry wondered just what she was carrying and if that was why she had refused to let it go - everything in it would break, potentially shatter into unfixable pieces.

Watching as the mare fell back toward his spot on the seafloor, where Eoin had expected her bag to land when she dropped it, as had been recommended. But no, it was not her bag that fell - it was the mare. Eoin scrambled out of the way, swishing backward as fast as his little tail fin could propel him. When she landed, a puff of sand flew up into the water, and Eoin closed his eyes, letting out a tiny cough as some got in his mouth. Once he was sure it had settled or been whisked away by the current, he reopened his eyes to find her just in front of him, her blue and white scales shining dimly in the depth-darkened sunlight. She had yet to really understand him or Flurry, so Eoin introduced himself again. "I'm Eoin," he said, halfway between shyness and his usual confidence. He felt more uncertain than anything.

As Flurry swam to float beside him, Eoin turned to look at the stallion who he knew almost better than his own father. "What can we do to help her now?" he asked.

"I don't know," said Flurry. He looked sadly at the little colt's horn. "If you had been taught to use your horn by your mother before your father stole you, perhaps..." Perhaps you could help close the wound, he thought, but he could not lay that burden on the poor boy. For the thousandth time since the foals had been conceived - or perhaps even since they'd been stolen - Flurry cursed George. There was so much they should have learned! All three should have learned to heal, how to do that teleporting thing that minicorns were famous for. Eoin and Lorcan should have learned whatever their quilin powers were; Flurry knew little and less about those creatures. Still, Eoin had always had a calming way about him, even when he was in his basket, so Flurry sighed and let it wash over him. He didn't know why Eoin's presence felt that way, but he suspected the foal's parentage had something to do with it, and only the quilin were left unaccounted for. "Perhaps if she'll let you, get closer to her. Sometimes all anyone needs is the comfort of another soul."

Nodding solemnly, Eoin made a tentative swish in the mer mare's direction, stopping a yard or so from her face. "I'm Eoin," he said again, putting a smile on his face. "I'm here to help you, just like Flurry is. I'm going to come a little closer, all right? I won't touch you or any of your things unless you want me to." Hoping that would pacify her - if the mare needed pacifying, that was - Eoin moved in a little bit closer, until he floated a half a foot away from her, near the junction of her neck and shoulder. "We're right here to keep you safe. There's a herd above you, too, to keep you safe. Right up there in the reef."

Keeva's head drooped, the adrenaline that had kept her going finally exhausted and she now trembled slightly in shock, despite the fact that the water was quite warm. Her blue eyes were dull and she knew there was something...something...

The foal said something to her breaking her chain of thought and she tried to focus on him and his words, but everything was so jumbled. It frustrated her to no end, and she forced herself to think harder about what was being said to her and try to keep from succumbing to shock. She had to stay awake...and focused...she had to...she had to...what was it she had to do? Sleep? Sleep would be so easy...just close her eyes and...she let her eyelids slowly drop. No!

She jerked just slightly but it wasn't at the approach of the foal, in fact she hadn't even realized he'd come closer to her. She kept getting lost in her thoughts even though she kept trying to force herself to listen to them. She needed to know what was going on, and being unaware of her own condition was driving her slowly crazy. There were things...things she could...She opened her mouth to say something but only a hoarse croak escaped. She resisted the urge to flick her tail in annoyance that would only cause more pain and possibly reopen the wound. If that happened...she trembled slightly in fear.

Wasn't there something happening a moment ago...Oh yes, the foal...the strange little foal with the...horn? It was like something from a dream...seathi with horns...like...like a...she let her thoughts trail off as the little one put his head on her shoulder. She mouth twitched just a bit. He was warm and comforting. Her head drooped again, but her eyes looked up through her forelock and found the pale green eyes of the older seathi. "Bag." she managed and then allowed herself to give in and pass out. With any luck he would take that as an invitation to look through her things. Please let him look through her things...He was a healer...he should know what to do with a good portion of the contents of her bag. If he didn't, poor healer he was. Although some of them were of her own creation and she was the only one who knew their uses, that was neither here nor there though and hopefully a problem for much later. A tomorrow problem...if that...if she didn't survive the night then her secrets would just fade away with her. A sad thought, but that was life...and life was cruel sometimes.
