It had been just over a sevenday since riders, candidates, weyrfolk and crafters had banded together with dragonkind to help retrieve a firelizards lost clutch. Since then the female had taken up residence in the Dining Hall of the Weyr, minding her clutch in front of the hearth and guarding it from would be attackers. For three days after the event the firelizards had continued looking long after the humans had given up. Sadly, although they had not managed to find the last one of their group. Eventually they had abandoned the search, knowing the egg would have perished by this point if it had simply been left, so if someone had not taken it it was surely dead.

The loss had saddened the gold, but she continued to do her duty to the rest of her young and tended them. The day had finally come though for her clutch to leave her sheltering. She began humming early in the morning and her fair soon picked up the call. Usually that would be all, but as they were in the Weyr other voices began to announce their news. Resident firelizards around the Weyr joined the scene in the hall, some calling to their people. Even a few dragons decided to rumble the announcement. Soon people were rushing into the hall, expectantly gathering around the eggs.

Some of the paint had rubbed off in places, but most held enough of their man-made markings to be recognisable. A few bore scratches were the fair had tried to remove the marks, but they had decided to scratch the eggs was too dangerous and the garish markings would just have to stay. The gold perched on the hearth above her nest and eyed the humans that aarrived. If her young so chose to bond to them that was there choice, but she would not allow them to pressure her babies. A bowl of meat scraps was brought out by a hopeful kitchen worker and placed on a nearby table, there was certainly enough for people to help themselves. The eggs in the trough began to twitch and shudder. They would be making their entrances soon.

Jedith told his rider that the eggs were hatching and in no uncertain terms that his rider should attend.

K'star had tilted his head wondering why his dragon was being so adamant and ..mysterious. Grouchy little creature this morning, he yawned it must be feeding time.

He stumbled out of bed and took Jedith to the feeding grounds where the blue hurridly fed..also uncharacteristic. Aha, he must be excited about this hatching. Well okay then that is where his rider would head next.

K"star had seemed to arrived before many of the others, but there was the many colored bodies and the cheerily decorated eggs. Their blaring color made K'star smile a bit. He wondered if the paint would leek through the shell and produce parti - colored firelizards. His dragon admonished him for that silly thought.

Wen paused in oiling the harness in his hands, listening intently for a moment. "I think the flit eggs are hatching." He said finally and hung the harness on the rack, standing slowly. "Do you want to come Wyleth?"

The blue dragon shifted, interest flooding his bond partners mind and stretched, giving a slow wiggle. <Yes, anything has to be better then watching you oil leather.>

Wen snorted and they made their way to the dinning hall to watch the eggs hatch, perhaps attempt to impress one or two.

Lorend was in the middle of an early morning hunt for creepies when Foen began tugging her hair and chittering. She scowled at the blue, as the bug she'd been trying to catch scuttled off. "Whachoo do that for?" She noticed he was looking toward the dining hall. "Ain't time for breakfast."

The firelizard's eggs are hatching LorendMine. Perhaps you should go watch after all that work to help her. The green sniffed disapprovingly. A flit hatching was much better than bug hunting.

"Oh really? Sure why not." The teen strode off eagerly to join those at the dining hall. She noticed with detachment that someone had set out meat. A glance at the eagerly humming blue on her shoulder and she shrugged. Why not? Lorend grabbed a handful of meat and found herself a place to kneel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lathis had come in for an early morning cup of klah. She was sitting at a table when the flits began humming. "Oh! Their hatching! How wonderful!" It was a good sign at least that they hadn't taken any hurt from their wanderings. She got up and headed over to join the group forming around the clutch still holding her cup.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bacha was only thinking of breakfast as she wandered into the dining hall. Chores started early for a candidate. She yawned as she headed for the breakfast stuffs, but pulled up short. What was that sound? Her head swiveled. It sounded like humming, but there wasn't any eggs on the Sands. A closer inspection revealed the humming firelizards. Her mouth went 'o' in surprise. Could she.... perhaps.... be allowed to watch? Bacha sneaked closer.

Lavi and Navi

Lavi arrived at the hatching with Navi in tow. She remembered the last time they had attended a firelizard hatching with the whole family, each impressing one of a different color. Her own green Aurus, or 'Cress' as Navi called her for the color, was nowhere to be seen today, too nervous to brave such a large crowd. Navi's gold Blessing, however, was where she always was; keeping a watchful eye on her little charge. When she perched on his shoulder she looked ridiculously large, usually she flew behind, clung to his back, or let him hold her in his arms. Today it was the first option, making sure she kept a respectful distance away from the clutching mothing.

Unfortuantely, these days, they were both been busier and had to alternate taking him to things like this. She wondered how long it was since they'd done something as a family, all three of them. She wasn't sure, but decided to talk to T'nus about it soon. Especially if Navi was about to have a sibling, they needed to make sure he got enough attention too.

Navi let go of his mother's hand and ran forward towards the eggs, while she hung back. He was looking for his friends too, since he knew Ionan, at least, would want to be here. He impressed at the last clutch too.

Daimon and Rowan

Daimon sat on the tables in the dining hall, wondering when breakfast would be. Even those bowls of meat were making him hungry. Maybe not quite so raw, but fried up with some wherry eggs..

Luckily, Kleimeeth's voice was there to distract him from his hunger. D'mon, I bet I can guess what eggs will be what color!
Daimon laughed. Kleimeeth was always playing little brain-teasers like these with him. You're on. Let's see if Cordi and and Astri want to play when they get here.

Rowan was sitting near by, stroking the head of his blue Nimbus, who was curled up on the table, half asleep. Hopefully they wouldn't mind him here. He didn't know if it was the same for flitts, but he'd heard they weren't allowed in dragon hatchings. But Nimbus was likely to cause any trouble. Both their firelizards were remarkably well trained, courtesty of their beastcrafting sister.

ali heard the sounds and commotion comming from the hatching grounds as she head twards there and hoped to see who would get the egg she rescued softly she hummed a different song to her self as she tryed to calm down in the crowd this was already scary for her being anti social and normally away from every one when she had the chance so she sat down on a place she could find that she could see what was going on.

Yay! Hatching time! Ionan found this almost as exciting as a dragon hatching: and that was saying a lot. He'd willingly dropped the sweeping he'd been instructed to do in the dining hall to investigate. Firelizard clutches were worth any punishment he'd recieve for skivving chores! He might even return to the creche with a firelizard of his own!

The boy was delighted with the idea. He glanced around, hoping to catch sight of Astri or another of his friends. No, Astri wasn't there! Instead he sat by Rowan. He didn't know the older boy: but he resembled Astri so maybe the two were related? "Hi, I'm Ionan," he greeted him. "You here to try and get one too?"

From her vantage point the gold carefully watched as people approached her clutch, eyes narrowing to slits. Many of these faces were familiar, but others were not. Still, she had to allow them the chance. Besides, they should come to admire her beautiful clutch and the strong firelizards that would hatch from it. She turned her slowly whirling eyes to a female as she knelt down, let's not get too close. A small human ran towards her clutch and a growl rose up. She would not have some foolish human frightening her young or falling and hurting her eggs. Behave or she would shoo him away.

It was a small beige egg that began to crack first. Or at least it looked beige, this one hadn't been scratched or rubbed much, so it's true colour under the paint was a mystery. Purple lines and dots also covered it, but now began to split apart as it's inhabitant wriggled and bucked to be free. It was tired of being cooped up inside and was ready to break out and see the world. The egg seemed to almost vibrate with the hatchling's energy. The shell's cracks split and spread, but seemed reluctant to release the firelizard. The egg was a good size, about medium for the clutch and many were eagerly awaiting to see what would emerge. They didn't wait long as the top of the egg exploded and a large green darted out, speckled with egg pieces. The dark green hatchling looked up at the gathering of people, head flicking back and forth. Her movements were quick and jerky, seeming to jump from one pose to another. Her dark green body was a stark contrast to her pale wings, which seemed almost translucent, with thin dark veins crossing across the thin membranes.

The firelizards above crooned to the first arrival. She looked up and then back at the humans gathered around her. This seemed like quite a gathering. The youngster didn't have much time to claim the limelight however before more eggs began to shake. The next two arrivals didn't wait nearly as long as a blue and brown egg collided with each other, shattering and spilling their contents out into a tangled heap. A pale blue and yet another dark green. Both were on the smaller sides for their colours and wriggled about trying to escape from the mess of wings and legs. Finally the blue scrambled free, stepping on his sister's nose as he did so. The green let out a frustrated squeak and pulled her head upwards sharply. Effectively yanking the blue's leg out from under him and causing him to fall into the sand. The second green climbed shakily to her feet and looked around. Oh, what was all of this then?

Jemi

Was that humming? Jemi slowed down her run, pacing as she listened and wheeled over towards the Dinning hall, sending a message to Irith.

Irith moved slowly and headed to meet her partner. Her rider could do anything she wanted.

Z'fer

Bosun lifted his head from the plate of food scraps he was 'cleaning' and began to thrum. The little lizard hopped from the table to Z'fer's lap, then back up into the air, thrumming excitedly the whole time. An image of the hearthside clutch popped into the greenrider's mind.

"Oh fine!" Not that Z'fer hadn't had that clutch in mind for days! The young man dragged his boots on and rushed his way down to the dinning hall just in time to see the first couple of eggs crack.

Paige

The clutch is hatching. Venaith commented innocently, subtle amusement breaking down into draconic laughter as Paige scrambled, practically falling over herself to untangle from her desk and get down to the dinning hall. The young gold followed at a healthy trot, keeping her rider in sight the entire way.

Paige skidded into the hall and was forever grateful to whomever had supplied the meat scraps. She quickly grabbed a handful and dropped to her knees. She tried not to crowd anyone out, but she didn't want to be left behind either!

Cai

Did you want to see the firelizards hatching? Genith asked neutrally. Cai had shown interest in the eggs when they were being found, but had that remained?

"I suppose we could take a moment. One might be useful if I can train it properly"

The two arrived just behind the running goldrider, sidestepping to get out of her way. Cai sniffed disapprovingly. Entitled little twit. He stood behind her, a handful of raw meat ready as he watched the others.

Oh! The first of the eggs were hatching. Foen sat on her shoulder, his throat vibrating with welcome for the new flits. She had to admit this was the most unusual hatching given the color of the eggs. Lorend giggled behind her hand as the beige and purple egg spilled its contents onto the sand. She was quickly followed by two more siblings.

"Whacha think?" The teen whispered to her blue. She got the feeling that they were baby flits and he loved them all! A laughing roll of her eyes and she turned happy thoughts on the young flits. Hoping to attract one to help in her pranks. Lorend gave a grin and wave with her meat free hand to Paige. "Glad you could make it."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lathis let out a happy sigh as the first of the eggs hatched healthy flits. Setting down her cup, she picked up a handful of scraps and moved a bit closer. Boy she was glad they didn't have to have scraps when dragons were hatching. She laughed at the idea of candidates with large pieces of meat trying to attract a dragonet to them.
I wouldn't need meat to have found you LathisMine, a disapproving voice found the image un-amusing. I wasn't easily swayed when I was hatchling. I knew what I wanted.
I know dear. I didn't mean it like that. She thought loving thoughts to the green outside. Lathis watched first three hatchlings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the table, Bacha filled her hand from the bowl. It would be nice to have a firelizard. Worth a shot, she thought as she hunkered down in a free spot. She glanced around at the others and grinned. Her attention went back to the eggs as the first opened and then two more. Lovely.

It seemed the eggs were not content to wait for their siblings to move along before they all hatched. No time to spend thinking about where they were going, there wasn't time for all that. A bronze coloured egg with a floral pattern began to buck and spin. The egg twisted to the side and collided with the second green to hatch. The green hissed in surprise and pushed the egg back. The egg stopped for a moment and a cracking could be heard. The top of the egg began to splinter and a green nose slowly forced its way up and out, the neck, body, wings and tail quickly following the nose out. Unlike her two sisters, this green was on the brighter side. Shaking herself off she chirruped pleasantly. Hello everyone! There were so many of them, oh this would be fun!

A second egg followed close on her heels, but its progress had gone largely unnoticed. With the commotion of the last egg to hatch this one had had time to quietly chip away and make a small hole in the side of the shell. The brown eggs lines and spots had been worn away a bit, revealing a pale purple shell underneath. A small pair of feet began to push at the side of the shell and more and more shards broke away. The hole was finally big enough that the small hatching pulled herself free. The green looked over her shoulder and then around at the rest of them. There were so many already. Four greens now stood in the trough and as the little ones walked around it became hard to remember which had hatched first.

Pulling himself to his feet the young blue gave and upset harrumph. That hardly seemed fair. She'd tripped him! He looked at the two greens as they stared up at the gathering of people and gave a snort. When more eggs began hatching and spilling their contents he'd had enough. The blue was not going to stand here in among this disorganised mess. Hopping out of the trough he walked away from the squawking gathering. He walked past a few people and paused. Raising his head he sniffed the air, turning he followed the smell until he came across a young healer. Hello, may he have some of that? The blue waited patiently, staring up at Cai expectantly.

Paige

"Hey!" She waved back to Lorend. "Thanks! You too!" She was distracted from further talk as the little blue hatchling started sniffing in her direction. She held out a scrap close to him, holding her breath, but was completely ignored. The blue turned to someone else behind her.

She shrugged and watched the little greens instead. "These eggs look terrible." She whispered to Lorend. It wasn't judgmental, just a bit of humor and pity for the poor stolen and painted eggs. The damage to the paint done by scraping and the clawing of the firelizards was obvious. She could sympathize with their desire to remove the traces of the event though.

Cai

Well that was quick! Cai raised an eyebrow at Genith as the little blue hatchling stared up at him and the food in his hands. He didn't chirp, didn't cry or fuss, but obviously waited for something. Cai approved instantly. He knelt beside the goldrider and after coaxing the flit with a couple pieces, took claim of it. He lifted the powder blue creature gently in his hands and continued to feed it.

They are not normally so calm are they? Genith eyed the little blue. He didn't bother to hide his pleasure in it's color. It was enough to make Cai crack a smile.

Not in my experience. This bodes well for us I think.

Ryala was already in the dining hall, helping with the chores, when the humming began. At first, she didn't know what it was, or what it meant. Looking around at the boy who was sweeping, she saw him quickly abandon the work when he became aware of the sound. And then, when other people began to arrive, looking hopeful and expectant as they gathered around the firelizard nest, she suddenly realized what was going on.

The eggs were hatching.

Setting aside the cloth that she'd been using to clean the tables, she went to join the other folk who were assembling. She watched, wide-eyed, as the first shells broke open, and the hatchling flits emerged. Awed, she watched as five eggs brought forth four green flits, and one blue. And then... the blue found someone. Her heart nearly stopped at the touching sight.

Realizing that she'd need to grab something to feed a flit if she wanted one herself, Ryala pulled away from the crowd just long enough to grab a handful of meat from the waiting bowl, and returned with the bloody mess over to where she could see the hatchlings and eggs.
