"Hey, Walpurgis!"
The rocket agent looked up from his food and quickly finished chewing before responding to the rocket who called his name. "Yes, Jeremiah?"
The older rocket frowned as he brushed a lock of blue hair out of his eyes. "The higher-ups are looking for you. The big ones. You do something to piss them off?"
Walpurgis blinked. He'd turned in the pokeballs Karina had handed to him as per protocols, so that wouldn't be it. "I don't know."
Jeremiah gave a cautious glance over his shoulder, as if he was being watched. "Yeah, well, if I were you, I wouldn't keep them waiting.
That was sound logic. Walpurgis got up from his seat and began walking towards the elevator. As he rounded the corner, Jeremiah took his seat and began to dig into the forgotten food.

It had only been a day since Walpurgis had returned to Motterosa City, and a little less than a week since he had returned to Zatao from Kanto. Walpurgis scratched the back of his head as the elevator door opened up to the dorm floor. What had he done wrong? He couldn't think of anything. Opening the door to his room, he was greeted by the ringing of his communicator. Closing the door behind him, he quickly answered the communicator.
"Hello?"
A voice crackled to life. "Hey, Walpurgis. Ah, uh, kinda forgot ta mention - ah told the higher-ups what went down in Saffron."
Walpurgis' throat was suddenly dry. Is that what had the higher-ups after him? "What did you tell them?"
"Ah said -" Karina's voice was silenced as the call disconnected, having been forcibly overwritten.
"Agent Walpurgisnacht." It wasn't even posed as a question.
Walpurgis swallowed. "Yes, sir?"
"Agent Kriemhild Gretchen informed us of your activities in Saffron City. You lied to your superior about what you were planning. Why?"
Even if they couldn't see his face, Walpurgis knew there would be little benefit to lying, and none at all long term. "Because I would never have been allowed to go if I had."
The voice flared up. "You are absolutely right! You are a valuable asset, and we would not allow you to sacrifice yourself on some fool's errand!" The voice continued to get louder and angrier. "Furthermore, you brought Kriemhild Gretchen, who is currently embedded on a deep infiltration mission, with you! Not only did you risk her cover, you risked her as an asset as well!"
Walpurgis resisted his urge to tell them that Karina had come of her own volition, knowing that she had probably told them that herself.
"The two of you went alone against ridiculous odds, and you could have been captured or killed!" There was a brief pause, and the voice softened. "However, you did not. You not only returned, but you killed Commissioner Hughes, a perpetual thorn in the side of our Kanto operations. For this, you have been promoted to Director. However, if you ever try to pull a stunt like this again, there will be severe consequences. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes, sir."
"Good." The communicator suddenly went silent, signalling the end of the call.
Walpurgis breathed a sigh of relief before pausing. Wait. Director?

As Walpurgis tried to wrap his head around what happened, the communicator rang again. "Yes, sir?" He said, answering it.
"'Sir'? What, ya think ah outrank ya, Walpurgis?"
"Karina?"
"Yep. Anyways, it seems like our call got cut short. What happened? Did the higher-ups get to ya?"
"Yeah. They yelled at me for a bit, then told me that I'm getting a promotion. I don't know why, either."
There was a slight pause. "Uh... yeah... about that. Ah, uh, kinda embellished the story a bit."
Walpurgis' face went blank, and he was silent for a moment as well. Pinching the bridge of his nose, he closed his eyes. "What did you tell them...?"
"Ah told 'em that you came up with tha whole plan, and ya asked for mah help. I agreed, and we blew up some buildin's before ya went an' killed Officer Asshat. With mah gun. 'Cause I was freakin' out. Wanted ta make ya sound gallant and s**t."
"So basically you said I did all the stuff you did." He sighed. "You deserve the promotion, not me. I went in there with a sort of death wish - if anything, you're the reason we both got out alive."
"Maybe. But ya deserve the promotion, Walpurgis. Ya've been held back fer years just 'cause of what happened with dad. Yer as good as me, at the least. Ya deserve it." She repeated.
Walpurgis knew she was just being kind, but he also knew better than to argue with Karina - it was an exercise in futility. "Alright. Thanks, Karina."
"No problem, Walpurgis. Now, ah'd love ta keep talkin' with ya, but someone might get suspicious that ah'm takin' so long in the bathroom, so ah really gotta go. See ya later, man."
The communicator went dead silent again, and Walpurgis threw himself down onto his bed.
Director, huh?

Walpurgis stirred at the sound of knocks on the door. Glancing at the clock, he found that he had fallen asleep for a few hours. "Sorry, be there in a second..." He yawned as he finished speaking. Opening the door, he found himself face to face with Jeremiah.
"Hey, Walpurgis. Was told to give you these." The blue haired man handed Walpurgis two pokeballs, which he recognized as the ones Karina had given him. "Brass says they don't need them, so you get to have 'em."
Accepting the two pokeballs, Walpurgis nodded. "Alright, thanks, Jeremiah."
"Hey, no problem, man." The older rocket turned and left.

Looking the pokeballs over, Walpurgis came to the sudden realization he had no idea what was inside. He threw the two pokeballs across the room, unleashing the sandshrew and nidoran contained within. The two pokemon looked around at their new surroundings, curious.
The nidoran caught a glimpse of the sandshrew and scowled. "You."
The sandshrew turned to face him, giving him an innocent smile. "Me?"
The nidoran's eyes narrowed. "Return what you stole, thief. It is because of you that I was captured. Return the hat to the human."
The sandshrew shrugged in reply. "Look around, angry. The human I stole from isn't here, and I don't have the hat anymore. They took it when they beat me up. She looked up at Walpurgis. "You save us, then?" She clapped a paw to her face. "Oh, right. You humans can't understand us. Keep forgetting that."
The sandshrew looked around the room again, and a gleam caught her attention before a matching gleam formed in her eyes. Rushing onto the bed, the sandshrew grabbed the rocket's communicator and tried to run off with it. The nidoran cut off her path, however, and snarled. "Return it. It is not yours."
Before she could respond, she was picked up by the scruff of the neck, and the communicator clattered to the ground. Turned around, she found herself face to face with the much larger human. She shriveled slightly in fear - she didn't like being beaten. But the human only smiled. "You're fast. You'll be a great member of the team, Marisa." He said, giving her a name on the spot. The human turned his attention to the nidoran as he set the sandshrew gently onto the floor. "And you'll be Thanagor. Welcome aboard."

Thanagor nodded. "As you say, my liege." He bowed his head at Walpurgis.
Marisa looked over at the nidoran and laughed. "'My liege'? Fancy."
The poison-type pokemon glared at her. "Be silent, thief. I neither asked nor needed your opinion."
The sandshrew shrugged. "Whatever. I'll say what I want."
Before Thanagor could respond, there was a series of red flashes as Walpurgis sent out the rest of his pokemon. The largest of the two rattata's chattered threateningly at the two pokemon before Walpurgis picked him up. "We're not fighting, Gangrel. Satori, you calm down, as well." The liepard slinked backwards from creeping behind Marisa and growled unhappily. Setting the rattata down on the bed, he continued speaking. "Guys, these are Marisa and Thanagor. Marisa and Thanagor, these are Gangrel, Satori, and Nazrin."
Nazrin was the first to approach the two new pokemon. "Hiya! My name is Nazrin. You'll play with me, won't you? Mom and dad aren't that good at playing, but they're really strong. Like, super strong. I heard that, once, they took down a mew and a gengar without even breaking a sweat!" She paused. "I wasn't born then, but I'm pretty sure it's true! Why? 'Cause I'm Nazrin!"
Marisa tilted her head. "That doesn't really explain anything," She said, then smiled. "But I like your style. Sure, we can play together..." The sandshrew crept close to the young rattata and whispered into her ear. "You know where we can find anything shiny to steal? Shiny things are great. I'm not sure why, they just are. Trust me."

While Marisa and Nazrin strategized over how best to steal a fork from the kitchens, Thanagor began to speak with Gangrel and Satori. "So, you are to be my new companions? Well met."
Satori rolled her eyes and yawned as Gangrel looked the nidoran over. "I've never seen one of your kind, but I've heard that they're great at fighting. Is that true?"
Thanagor was confused by the sudden question, but he answered nevertheless. "I can engage in combat, yes."
Satori chuckled as Gangrel grew visibly excited. "You'll regret saying that."
Gangrel's eyes flared as he stared at Thanagor. "Let's battle. Right now."
The nidoran was taken aback. "I have no reason to fight you."
Gangrel sighed. "Then make one up. It doesn't matter if there's a reason or not. Just fight me."
While Walpurgis couldn't understand the conversation taking place between his pokemon, he could hazard a guess as to Gangrel's intentions. "Gangrel, not in the room. You guys can battle in the training area."
The rattata turned to face Walpurgis and chattered happily. As the rocket opened the door to the outside, Gangrel rocketed out of the room, apparently heading for the training area. Satori lazily got to her feet and turned to face Thanagor. "You'd better go after him. He hates to wait to battle." With a swish of her long tail, the liepard left the room as well.
