A text was sent early one afternoon to a certain pale haired young woman:Nio Love Text to Maebe Bertrand:Training fields. One hour. Should you not show up, I'll assume you're uninterested.

kuroopu Text to Alistaire:Kinky. I didn't know you like to do it in public. Maebe knew exactly what Alistaire was looking for, and she was happy to oblige - as she was already determined to find herself a spar once a day. She had only failed in this task a few times, when the bed seemed more comfortable than usual, or when Lawr needed assistance while he'd been in the infirmary. Now that he was back on his feet, Maebe had gotten used to picking a fight and training herself on a daily basis. It was the only thing she put out the effort to do. But fighting Alistaire made her skin crawl with delight. And the fact that he'd asked her to come had other delights occurring within her. She was very excited for this. Thaw was already summoned when she skipped into the training fields. She said nothing - no smart a** comment, no clever quip. She looked genuinely happy to see him. But happy, for Maebe, was another beast entirely.

He deliberately ignored her reply, instead pocketing the phone and proceeding to get ready. His coat was neatly pressed and ironed, but left unbuttoned as usual. Dark slacks, pinstriped vest, white dress shirt, and black tie held in place by a silver tie tack, as well as his customary dark gloves. Perhaps not the most sensible thing to wear to a spar, but he wasn't about to lower himself to their standards by wearing anything less than his usual clothes.
It was all about impressions, after all.
Alistaire arrived a few moments early to the training field, and spent the extra time debating on how to handle someone like Maebe. She was still an enigma, something he couldn't quite figure out, and figuring her out was necessary in order to use her properly.
/ Here she comes here she comes / Grim hissed delightedly, and Alistaire turned, his lips already curving upwards in a satisfied smirk. Her weapon was already summoned - a long dark thing with sharp prongs, but Alistaire's weapon remained unsummoned for the time being.
"Good afternoon, Maebe Grace Bertrand."

Maebe's face pinched with pleasure when he spoke, and she smiled at him affectionately. "Did you know, I love it when someone uses my full name? I bet you didn't know. Or maybe you did; it's so easy to forget how much we've already shared." She took her place across from him, and slid her hands down the shaft of her weapon. He was dressed impeccably, and it killed her. She wanted to hate him, not crave his wardrobe skills. She needed to be the prettiest one on the field. Solution: Grind him down into the dirt. "I'm ready when you are." She called out pleasantly. settling Thaw into both hands. I have never seen you so light-hearted. You seem to be enjoying this.
What's not to enjoy? He hates me, I hate him, we're going to beat each other up. Sounds like the perfect start to my day.
I wonder about that.

He resisted rolling his eyes, his eyes tracing Maebe's every movement; and after a moment, he held out a hand, gloved palm facing skyward, the chain link bracelet on his wrist jangling. After a moment, however, the chain glowed a pale greenish color and then dissipated, reforming as second later as a pair of sleek black daggers attached at the ends by a series of chains to one another.
Alistaire smiled.
"Relax, Miss Bertrand, you're hardly forgettable," he said airily, and swung the chains, the knife aiming for her side.

Ugh. Not another dagger user. Maebe was staring straight at his weapon when she pouted, physically bratting out about another close quarters fight. His words cheered her up infinitely, however, and even when he dug his dagger into her side and her Fear shield crackled in dismay, she felt a thick, dwelling elation over them. "Good." She piped up with a nod, twirling Thaw in her hands before digging his trident prongs into the man beside her. "I don't ever want you to forget about me." Push him back, child. Thaw warned, and Maebe tried to use Thaw to put distance between them. It was a weak gesture, and her weapon growled with disappointment. HP: 35 Damage: 4

Stabbing Maebe was somewhat satisfying, even with the FEAR shield in place; and Alistaire moved backwards, narrowly escaping the full brunt of her return jab, although the trident's points dug painfully into his side. He gave a low hiss of pain and shoved them aside, the chains of his weapon dragging along the ground.
"Your carelessness and your willingness to lower yourself to such a level hardly make you forgettable," said Alistaire, waving one of the daggers airily. "Don't pride yourself on thinking that I remember you for any other reason, except that you think yourself more capable than you actually are."
The chains clinked as he swung them, Alistaire twisting them around one of Maebe's wrists and yanking.

"Carelessness. Lowering myself." Maebe groaned as she felt the dig of his hit into her, and she pulled Thaw away, trying to stab again and missing due to such close quarters. "Those don't really sound like things you'd want to remember, Alistaire. You seem like you have other priorities. But it's interesting that those are the only ones you point out on me." She wasn't denying either of them. She actually kind of liked being called careless, because it meant she had a lack of care. That sounded about right. As for lowering herself... Maebe was already as low as she could go. There was no lower. "No matter how much you deny it, I do think you remember me for something better than that. I just have to figure out what." He smiled.
"On the contrary, Maebe Grace Bertrand," he said, because there was something very satisfying about saying the entirety of her name; it rolled off his tongue easily, like he was casting a spell and repeating the necessary words. "Those are exactly the kinds of traits that I find the most interesting. People who go by the books and who do nothing but follow the rules are dull and repetitive."
The chains clinked a little as he dragged them up, twining the metal around one gloved hand.
"Perhaps," Alistaire said lightly. He swung the chains around and caught Maebe by the leg, dragging her forward.
"Perhaps I also recall the foolish girl batting her eyes at me, begging me to take her to my room in that ridiculous New Year's dream."

In a way, he was casting a spell. He knew how much she loved hearing her full name. It was playing to her narcissism. Playing it like a finely tuned instrument, in fact. Her leg was caught in his chains, and she hopped, trying not to lose her balance as he dragged her towards him. Her weapon slammed against the chains, over and over, trying to get herself free. It didn't work, and he'd reeled her in like a fish. For once, she didn't mind the proximity. She wasn't trying to stab him, this time. He'd admitted something she found quite satisfying, and she needed to be this close to respond accordingly. So she stopped fighting the pull, and instead wrapped her arms around his shoulders to pull herself up to his ear. She whispered, very carefully, a reminder that her memory was just as clear. "Take me home, Alistaire." HP: 26 Damage: 3

The momentary smug satisfaction he'd felt reeling her in and catching her off balance was wiped the instant she wrapped her arms around him, her mouth next to his ear. Instantly he froze, his body stiffening beneath her grasp, and it was as though every molecule of him was buzzing, on edge, alight with the knowledge that somebody - somebody - was touching him.
Nausea rose in his throat, heavy and thick; he forced it down, his face paling, and a bead of sweat slid down the side of his neck. Alistaire twisted the chains, yanking them free of Maebe's leg and winding them around her waist instead as Grimshaw shouted inside of his mind.
"You'd like that," he hissed out, the words barely a gasp, "wouldn't you."
With a sharp flick of his wrists, he twisted her around, spinning her away from him and stumbling backwards, the chains falling free as he dragged in breaths for air, one gloved hand pressing against his sweat dampened throat. His eyes were wide, but he wasn't looking at her, teeth clenched together in an effort to keep from vomiting.
Breathe. Breathe. Breathe -

"Actually-" Before she could even respond, Alistaire had her twirling away, hard and painful as she lost her footing and slammed down onto the ground. Thaw clattered beside her, and she rubbed her tail bone, trying to soothe out the ache of falling. Alistaire was pale, and looked like he was having an anxiety attack. She'd probably triggered some PTSD memory of their night together. Maybe he was just that disgusted by her. Whatever. She didn't care. It didn't matter. Whatever. "Nevermind." She mumbled, pushing herself back up to stand, and picking Thaw up with one hand. "Better sober up, Prince Ali. I'm not against hitting a man while he's down." HP: 20 Damage: 0

Grimshaw was trying to get him to calm down, but Alistaire's eyes were flashing with anger and humiliation, his cheeks going from a sickly pale to a bright red flush as he straightened. His gaze was fixed on Maebe, and he stood there for a long moment before pointing one of his daggers towards her.
"I don't," he said thickly, "like being touched - "
And understatement and a confession all at once, though he wasn't entirely certain why he was saying it to Maebe Grace Bertrand, of all people. Contrary to whatever silly notions she believed, he did not actually hate her, evident enough by the fact that he had invited her here to the field in the first place.
There was no point in sparring and dirtying oneself with people he disliked.
The chains clinked as he twisted them around his hand again, and with one gloved hand he reached out, grasping Maebe's wrist and yanking her off balance again, pressing the dagger against her neck.
"Why must you be so infuriating?" he snapped. "I can't read you like I can other people, I can't figure out what goes on in that pretty little head of yours except a great deal of foolish fantasizing. Tell me, what makes you tick, exactly?"
A part of him was desperate to know, angry at not being able to figure out the puzzle. Alistaire stared down at her, his lips pressed together in a thin line, gloved fingers digging painfully into her wrist.

Somewhere deep down, Alistaire's hissing admittance wasn't a surprise. It was the fact that he'd admitted it so forcefully, due to her touching, that sent a thrill of satisfaction through her. Her breath shallowed for a moment as she just stood and let that soak in. It felt so good to see him falter from nothing more than a little touch around the neck. She wanted her hands all over him now, until he screamed and screamed and screamed- But now her thoughts were headed down an entirely different path, and it sapped some of the enjoyment out of her to know where her mind was going. He soothed her moment of disappointment with his questions, and once more she was entirely in love with how infuriated he was. He was simply perfect. "You do, Alistaire." Maebe breathed out, smiling prettily at him as he held the dagger to her neck. "You make me go tick, tock, all the way around the clock." She unsummoned Thaw, and reached up, softly pressing her hand against his. Her fingers barely touched him, feathering so light against the glove that it was hard to tell she'd touched at all. Her eyes focused on his, watching him now. She wanted every twitch, every rise of anger. She wanted his everything. She could feel the bruises forming under his fingertips. It made her smile just a little too fond. HP: 19 Damage: 0

Her fingers touched his hand and he jerked as if physically burned, every ounce of him desperate to pull away from her, to break the connection, in spite of the gloves that covered his fingers. A shudder ran through him, Alistaire gritting his teeth, his eyes flickering with mingled anger and a terrible curiosity. It was killing him to know that she knew his secret now; it had burst from his mouth unintentionally, and now there was leverage; now there was something to use against him.
"Nice try," he hissed, and the dagger prodded into her neck, a few drops of sweat clearly visible on Alistaire's forehead now. He still hadn't broken free of her touch, determined not to let her have the upper hand, determined to win, because if there was anything that Alistaire hated more than not knowing, it was losing.
"But you were a puzzle even before you met me. Tell me something else, tell me something that I don't know."
