Jakyra had no idea what Olaf had said to Captain Nordik to convince him to allow her to come along, and frankly she didn't care. That was not her part of their arrangement. Her part was much simpler, in her opinion, and not any kind of a hardship for someone like her. Oh, and there was the impressing the captain part. That was all on her, but she was pretty sure she was doing all right there. No one had complained about her messing up, at any rate.
Still, she couldn't help wanting a bit of reassurance, and so during some downtime she made her way over to Olaf to ask him bluntly, "Is the captain okay with me being here, really?"
She had been doing her best to talk to others in the band besides Olaf, but he was the one she knew best. Which wasn't saying very much, since she barely knew him at all, other than the fact he was a reaver and pretty damn canny. He would tell her if she was doing something wrong. At least, she hoped he would. Jakyra had been pretty clear about her goals here, and he had agreed to help her. In her mind, that included letting her know if she was making mistakes.

Olaf was feeling pretty proud of himself. Finally he had found an arrangement with a female where he wouldn't have to deal with personal feeling and he would still get the fun of BEING with someone else. It wasn't like he shunned females because he thought they were gross- he just thought they couldn't be trusted and were all out to cause him nothing but hardship. He'd only met one female he trusted, and she was just a gardener. Jakyra, he trusted enough to hold up her end of the deal, but beyond that, he didn't think she was someone he would put his faith in. Why? Well, because he was just a wounded male who had been stabbed in the heart by a female. He only liked the girls he didn't think of as female. "Of course the captain is okay with it!" Olaf huffed when he reached Jakyra, "think I just brought you along to get ya in trouble? You're doing fine." He did mean it to be encouraging, he meant it because it was the truth. So far, she had kept up with the band well and wasn't making him regret their agreement. "Just make sure you don't step on any paws and you'll be golden."

"No, I didn't think that," Jakyra replied, largely unruffled by Olaf's huffing. She could huff and puff right back if she had to. She just didn't want to. She kind of liked Olaf, in a general "he's not a bad person" sort of way.
"I will do my very best to mind my feet," she told him with an expression as serious as she could make it. She wanted to see if he would catch the humor. Despite craving reassurance that she was doing all right, Jakyra was generally in a good mood. She was getting what she wanted, after all, and she liked when that happened.
"Is it always like this? With the downtime and the days spent walking without encountering anyone?" she asked. Because so far, to her, this felt a great deal like it had when she was a cub with her family, only less familial. Her mind shied away from further comparison because she had a difficult time thinking of that part of her past, but she did remember that the days had been filled with a great deal of nothing.Cajanic Sorry this took me a while.

Olaf grunted. "Well good. I'm a lot of things, but a liar ain't one of them." Well, sometimes. Of course he lied when he needed to or when it seemed like he might get something good from it. For the most, though, he liked to be honest. It kept him from falling into trouble. Only females lied for fun- he'd already learned that lesson. So why would he want to be like a FEMALE, anyway? She was asking about the viking. What a newbie! Well, that was understandable, but still. "Sometimes," he hummed, "can't find great adventure every time, but I'm sure we'll run into something interesting pretty soon. Just gotta make sure we look in all the right places, you know?" He knew he hadn't always had terribly fun outtings, but that didn't mean they were always so boring. Hopefully something would come along to prove them right. A good fight or some mass of food to bring back. Maybe even some thralls. Anything to show her what fun it was to be a reaver.

Jakyra nodded and did not comment on Olaf's assertion about his honesty. It was one of the things she had never really gotten used to in the pride. A lion who claimed to be honest usually was honest, basically. The pride valued forthright speech. Lies were only tolerated, from what she'd observed, if they were told to fool outlanders.
Jakyra was used to lying to get what she wanted, but she was trying to break that habit, living among the Stormborn. That was why she had offered Olaf a straightforward exchange, rather that attempt to manipulate him. She wasn't sure he appreciated the effort she had gone to in doing so.
"When I was growing up, I was told it was generally best to avoid adventures." Her expression made it clear how little she thought of that philosophy. "Then I found myself having adventures and couldn't seem to stop."
There was no real reason for her to tell him even that much of her history. She just hadn't wanted to say something meaningless like "I know." It stood to reason that vikings couldn't be all excitement, all the time, but reason was not always the first thing on a lioness's mind on her first viking. She really wanted a chance to prove herself.
"What's the most exciting thing you've ever seen happen on a raid?"

Olaf could have gasped at the very thought of NOT having adventures. Being told they were best avoided? He couldn't imagine such a cruel world. "Well, I give you credit for not listening, then," he huffed easily enough, pretty sure he now hated whoever had said that about adventures in the past. If he could go back in time and give that lion the back side of his paw, he totally would. There was nothing better than a good adventure. She asked him what was his most exciting moment and he looked very thoughtful. "Me? Hmmm. Guess I can't really think of one thing. There was one time when we got jumped by some other pride looking for trouble, and we ended up in a nice big brawl over the same spoils! That was a good time, and pretty good fight training to boot. Made a couple enemies that day, that's for sure." He wondered if they had been a pride, or if they had just been a group of rogues looking to outshine another group. Whatever the case, it hadn't worked out for them. "What kind of thing do you want to see happen?"

She inclined her head, a silent thank-you for his credit. Jakyra didn't know much about Olaf, which was fine with her, but she did have the impression that he wasn't terribly impressed with her, on the whole, and so getting credit for this thing felt like an accomplishment. Albeit a sort of silly one.
"My mother wasn't much of a mother," Jakyra said dismissively. "Not listening to her was just good sense."
A quick grin flashed across her mouth as Olaf described being attacked by an entire pride. That definitely sounded exciting. She would be all right with something like that happening. She would definitely kick some serious a**. Though probably she shouldn't be hoping to be attacked. That wasn't normal, right?
"Gods, I really don't know. Something. If nothing happens on this viking, why would anyone say I have any value as a reaver?"

She posed a very good question. It was probably very important to her, though it hadn't been something he had been considering too seriously, naturally. What if they didn't end up doing anything important? It happened. At worst, they'd have to go back empty-pawed, not even any food to their name. There would be nothing that showed she was worthy of the title. He wouldn't be willing to make her a reaver with something like that, though he supposed he wasn't a captain so it hardly mattered what he thought. Maybe their captain wouldn't be as hard on her as he would have been. Most lions didn't loathe females, looking for ways to screw them over. Wait. That wasn't what he meant. His own thoughts were making his skin feel hot. "Well, maybe they'll appreciate you sticking through to the end and not complaining, you know?" He offered with a grunt, "we could do a bit of searching. You know, showing you're putting your all into it even if there isn't anything around."

Jakyra slanted a sideways look at Olaf, trying to figure out if his remark about sticking it out without complaining was some sort of subtle hint that she should shut her mouth and leave him be.
"Yeah, maybe you're right," she agreed. "I'll just shut my mouth and see what happens."
There was a part of her that definitely would have been up for exploring and seeking something interesting, as Olaf suggested, but Olaf didn't really seem to like being around her, for whatever reason. Maybe she looked like some girl who'd screwed him over in the past, or smelled like his least favorite sister. Who knew? At least he'd been willing to take her up on her deal.
"I don't know how thin the line is between taking initiative and disobeying orders, so for the time being, I'll play it safe. Thanks for listening to me whine."
And now he probably thought less of her for not wanting to go out and have adventures. So be it. Jakyra refused to jeopardize her reaver status by doing anything that might piss the captain off. There was also the fact that other reavers might think they had just gone off together for some adult fun time, which probably wouldn't do a great deal for her reputation. Gah!

"Guess you're probably right," Olaf shrugged. If they wandered off and something DID happen, then they would probably find themselves in a world of trouble. He didn't mind much- he'd been in trouble before and he would be again, no doubt, but for her... it was probably entirely different. She probably wanted to make sure she didn't do a single thing wrong. Impossible, really, but he understood her motivation. He yawned and shifted on his paws, before looking at her again. "Just don't think that a boring viking means you don't have to hold up your end of the deal," he reminded her without trying to sound like it was meant as some kind of threat. It was just what it was supposed to be- a reminder. And once this dull viking was complete, he would be seeking out his payment.

Jakyra stretched and tried not to be bothered by the feeling that she was not going to get what she wanted out of this, despite Olaf doing as she had asked him to do. That wasn't his fault though, and she would not renege on their deal.
"I didn't think that," she assured him. She refrained from adding anything about what a suspicious mind he had because, frankly, at another time she might well have decided not to hold up her end of things.
"Besides, if I tried, I bet you'd call me out and then we'd have to fight and then you'd beat me black and blue and that wouldn't be much fun for anyone, right?" She smiled at him with just a little too much good cheer and walked away before he could cast any more aspersions on her character.
