It was far from their second meeting. Allegro and Zuleikha had crossed paths quite a few times now and he was far less uncomfortable, not to mention less coltish, in her presence. He greeted her with a whicker and a nuzzle against her beak-esque muzzle. "Zuleikha."
She embraced him with a wing once he came close enough. "Allegro." In their past meetings she had learned more about him and thus knew how to judge his moods and balance his basic needs against her own. He craved the affection and attention as a placebo for mother's love. Attention she could give easily enough. Affection was a bit of a sketchy topic. His naivety made things a little easier on that front however. Zuleikha considered him a lover of sorts. Eagerness had proven to have made up for his inexperience.
The mare snorted softly and flicked her tail when her companion nosed at her belly. "What are you looking for, silly boy?"
"I thought..." Allegro lifted his head and his ears drooped a little.
"You thought...?" Still so easy to read! "Foals?" The change in his expression was confirmation enough and she could not help but laugh.
"I thought since we..." He let out a nervous grumble and pawed at the ground. "Well, I thought they happened every time?" Clearly a ridiculous notion given that she had laughed at him. Perhaps he shouldn't have asked at all? Damn his curious nature sometimes.
"No, Allegro, fortunately for me they do not." Otherwise she would have many many children by now. Zuleikha gave him a nuzzle and nipped at him gently. He need not feel ridiculous for asking. This was just another little gap in his education she could fill in for him. "There is a chance every time. I have never been, ah, blessed, shall we way, in this manner." If foals happened, they happened such was the way of life. But offspring had never been high on her list of things to achieve in life.
He felt a bit better after she nuzzled him. It had been a real worry for him once he stopped and thought about it. The thought of possibly continuing an unfortunate family tradition was a bit alarming to say the least - and this in and of itself was probably the most 'adult' consideration he had ever had. "So my mother just got...lucky...with my brother and I." Lucky wasn't the best word for it but he could not think of a better one.
"Yes. But if she had not we would not be here having this conversation either." Hopefully that would put him in a better mindset. Preferably one that would not spoil their time together.
"That is a positive way of looking at it."
"Indeed it is." She stretched a wing enough to brush his flank lightly with the tips of her feathers. "Come." There were much better things to do then to concern themselves with what ifs. And while they walked she could catch up on the current events in his life. That would provide a suitable change in conversation away from less desirable subjects.
