Leilani had finally found her way to the swamp that a Unicorn had told her about. They had vaguely mentioned that she would find a plant here that could help stave off infections of all sorts. "Just look for the bright yellow flowers!" He had yelled after her.
She had yet to take a step into the swamp our of shear fear. Her mother had warned her of going into places that seemed sinister and that age old adage seemed to be proving true of this place. The trees were draped with moss, the ground covered in ankle deep water that had an odd black tint to it. She sighed and decided that if she wanted to look for this plant she would have to go in sooner or later. Otherwise the trip here would be wasted.
Gathering her courage she stepped into the sludgy water suppressing an urge to shiver at the feel of it. "This was a terrible idea..." She said to herself.

And so it begins!

He tried to avoid swamps when he could. Not that Mar really cared about getting dirty, or wet, or anything like that- he was a kelpi, after all. A pure one, at that. If he dried out, he'd die. If he had to push himself into slimy filth just to stay wet, he would, and he had in the past. His childhood had plenty of rough-housing, like most colts, and he wasn't afraid of filth. He was a horse. They weren't the cleanest things around on principle.

But swamps...swamps reminded him of his youth. Life before Celeste. And that was a pretty bad life. His family was pretty awful. Too sterotypically kelpi for his tastes. And too proud of it. But fortunately that was the western swamp, not the eastern; the matter of distance was a major factor. Both for how far away he was from his old herd, and how much traveling it was from his lake.

He was only here because it was around where that wishing star had been. As dumb as it felt, Mar felt the need to pay homage. They had another child. The light of his life, as...excitable as she could be. Hopefully Celeste wasn't having too much trouble in his absence. If she ended up with a major headache, he'd make up for it somehow.

Looking around the muck, he realized he'd need to eat soon. Maybe there'd be a frog or salamander handy. Fish seemed out of the question. They had higher standards than this. He just sighed and started pushing through it, going into the swamp water and moisterizing himself before starting to look for food. Seeing anyone else wasn't something he had even thought about, nor had any preference about.

Though swamps were known for having less than savory residents hanging about...

The swamp became darker about a hundred feet in. The trees began to close in on Leilani, a claustrophobic feeling came over her and she had to stop her slow slogging movement and breathe through the panic attack that started suddenly. Breathing slowly with her eyes closed seemed to help stave it off. She blinked open her vivid orange eyes and attempted to flick her tail. Sadly her tail end was immersed in the water and muck and wouldn't move. The grimace on her face barely encompassed the annoyance she felt. She was beginning to fear this Unicorn was fooling with her about the rare yellow flower that grew around dead trees.
Movement caught her eye and she turned slowly to see... What was it she was seeing. It was obviously another Soquili but unlike any she had ever seen before. He had fins on his body and a long tail that ended in another fin. She was curious enough to stop her search and stare at him? It looked like a him. She flicked one orange wing open then closed again. An action that she did when her mind was elsewhere occupied.

Lol. Lei has never seen a Kelpie before...

Despite his fluffy fetlocks and his mane starting to float in the mucky water, Mar still wasn't concerned. It wasn't like how it was with his son whose hair got caught on EVERYTHING, or his mate's long tail that was actually threatened by filth and aquatic flora. It also had a nasty habit of attracting jellyfish, for whatever reason...

He continued plodding along, being too big to need to start swimming right away. His tail was already snaking about, though, preparing for whenever the land might slope down from under him. What could possibly threaten him, though? Water snakes, maybe? He snorted. Those just took one tail smack or a stomp, and that's it. Mar had heard legends about gators, but never saw one. Not that he had any particular interest in finding a fight.

Eventually he slowly came to a stop. Gaze flicking about, he realized...he had no idea where he was. His mind had been wandering. Just standing in the middle of the bog, absolutely clueless. Though...there was something green. Or someone, really, he noticed. He had to squint, trying to see the creature despite being a little ways off. Another horse? With wings? The stature implied female.

That coloration was rather strange, but he had seen weirder. Since Mar wasn't the most social thing to begin with (his best and only friend was his mate, after all), he started to continue on his way. He had stared at her long enough.

Here's your first impression, Lei: a big ******** horse with slit pupils, black sclerae, and a lack of facial expression. HAVE FUN

Even with his menacing appearance he was not immediately attacking her so this was a good sign. She started forward again attempting to reach him and fell right into a deep part of the boggy water. She splashed and flailed about to absolutely no avail until she realized that she had to stop struggling and swim.
Sighing at her own silliness she kicked her legs and swam forward until she reached a shallow part of the bog. Stepping back into the ankle deep muck was almost reassuring.
Her wings were matted and covered in mud as was just about everything else. Flipping her sodden hair backward she called out to the other Soquili, "Excuse me? Have you ever seen a small yellow flower with a blue stem around here?" She hoped she wasn't making a mistake talking to him. For all she knew he could be a predator.

Yup! Nice scary appearance for Lei to deal with. Though tbh she rarely fears anything.

If nothing else in this place could alert Mar, Leilani's antics sure did. He silently watched her stumble into the deeper water, and blinked slowly when she started flailing about. It was enough to make him stop and stare, actually. Before he could ask her if she needed help, she managed to right herself. At least she knew how to swim. Things would have gotten awkward really quickly if she had started to drown. Mar, for one, had never had to save a drowning horse in his life. What would one even do about a situation like that?

Now the mare just looked green with darker green and brown on her flanks. A very earthy look. It wasn't until she called out to him that he realized that she had been coming his way, for whatever reason. Mar furrowed his brow a tad and looked her in the eye.

"Ummm...no? Only flowers I've seen were water lilies. ...All with green stems." What an odd question to ask, or really, what an odd thing to look for in a swamp.

Not that he was one to talk. He might as well be doing something similar, slogging through boggy terrain for something small and meaningless.

Her wings hung at her side completely soaked with water and too heavy to keep folded, though the look on her face said it all. Annoyance to an extreme she had never felt before... She looked at the Kelpie and said, "Sorry, I didn't mean to catch you off guard... This Unicorn told me I could find a flower in this swamp that helped with infections..." She frowned a little, "Though I think I have been played the fool..." She was making a fool of herself talking to this Soquili as well but she couldn't help asking, "What are you? I've never seen another with fins before..."

"Unicorns are supposed to be the purest things, but there's an exception to every rule, I guess," he said with a completely straight face. "Or there might actually be something like that. I'm just not one who knows about flowers and medicine to begin with." His forte was fishing, and that was...basically it, really.

Mar blinked at her, not expecting a question like that. Someone didn't know what a kelpi was? After how they're one of the most notorious things around, only second to skinwalkers? That sure was a new one. "I'm a water horse. We're called kelpis." He shrugged his big shoulders the best he could considering the circumstances. "I thought we were pretty common, but I might have been wrong about that... but we're around. I think we all eat meat, so I'd be careful around them if I were you." He obviously didn't seem to be intending to lump himself in with them. Instead he looked rather awkward in being put on the spot. When he wasn't maintaining odd eye contact, he looked away like a shy colt. "You're...an alicorn right? That's what a winged horse and unicorn mix is...?" he asked, not completely sure of himself.

His herd had never bothered with winged horses on the whole. Hated them, really. This mare was the second winged cross he had ever met, the first being his own daughter.

"Unicorns are usually pure, like you say, but I have run across one or two that like to pull pranks on others." When he explained what a kelpi was and that he was one she looked at him curiously. So kelpies had fins and could swim very well it seemed, though did they prefer swamps or oceans or lakes? She twitched one orange and green wing, and though it was sodden it still moved a small amount. "So kelpies are water horses, and often look like you." She was always fascinated by other breeds.
His question about her own breed almost slipped by her as she thought about his features and if other kelpies looked like him or bore different fins. "Oh yes, I am an Alicorn." She stopped and remembered her manners finally, "My apologies, I completely forgot to introduce myself! My name is Leilani and I am here to gather flowers and herbs for use in healing." She paused, "Its nice to meet you!" Over enthusiastic could be considered her greeting, but Lei was always interested in new people and new places.
