Exhaustion was beginning to set in.
Illy had been pacing - well, swimming back and forth - the shoreline all day, towing along a heavy gold chain and a string of shells as long as she was, all hung on a cord of kelp. There were no traders in sight, no one to whom she could offload her baggage. At least, she thought, at least I don't have anything bigger to get rid of. The Corsairs were famous for stealing from the living - kelpis and mers, who often had hoards bigger than her whole section of the reef. Their hauls sometimes took ten seathi to carry back to the Grail; the big seafolk could carry twenty times what her people could. But Illy did not steal from the living. Instead, she scoured shipwrecks and brought little pieces home, carefully picking and choosing the ones that she wanted to keep and the ones that she knew the land dwellers would like... Because sometimes she liked their treasures more than the ones that could be found at sea.
Plus, their treasure was always free of barnacles. That was a bonus.
Shimmying farther into the shallows, Illy dropped her clunky necklace and shells in a foot of water. Her lungs were afire, and the added strain of carrying the jewelry around wasn't helping any. Lifting her head, she stuck her head above the water and gulped in air, her mohawk all plastered over her face as the tide swept over it. The waves were gentle enough today not to beach her, thank goodness, but that didn't make being near shore any less dangerous; something could very well lunge out and eat her. Not that she was afraid or anything.
Illy looked up and down the soft beige beach, but there was nothing in sight for a long ways, and her range of vision only went so far as the rocks and weeds that cropped up along the shore. Flipping her mane out of her eyes, the seathi sank down in the water until only her eyes and ears were above the surface. Her jewelry wasn't going anywhere, and if it did, she could easily catch it. Humming a little tune, she resolved to stay there and regain her energy until someone showed up to trade.
And if no one did, well, she'd just have to haul the stuff home again.
