You find a patch of mud with a strange blue tint. It has stained the grass near its borders. Not what you were asked to find, but almost undoubtedly useful. Maybe you should let him know where it is...

Stuck in mud up to his knees, Wintershadow regarded the patch of mud and then sighed -- it was in his hair. No doubt he would have blue hair for some time now, because he'd been thoughtless and stuck in his own head and had walked straight into it. This was not becoming behavior for someone who held the position of lead caretaker in a tribe like the Vale. Bird would have laughed at him, certainly, until she'd been shushed by Wild Hunt or Heartstone.

A smooth, sunbleached lynx skull lies in a clearing.

He could never be a scout -- he'd almost tripped on it, caught up in looking for withered or sick plants while on his travels back to the Vale. It sat in the middle of a clearing like someone had put it there, and it made the hair along his spine stand up. Its eyes -- or where its eyes had been -- stared at him, and from inside one of the hollow sockets the thin strands of a spiderweb glistened.

Shadow had never really had nerves of steel; how Ends-the-Chase had gotten them he had no clue. He left the skull where it lay, stepping gently around it and moving on before he started thinking too deeply about it.

You hear the sound of wings startled up when you enter this clearing, but there is no bird to be seen--only a strange shift in the light, as though a thin cloud had passed over the sun although the sky is clear.

Something had passed overhead: Wintershadow stood for a long while, looking over the clearing. No birds -- they hadn't been singing; no predators either. Nothing like the strange jellyfish that Wood Spider claimed to keep as a pet. But something had moved, something had changed the light .. but the silence was the same. He paused in the clearing for a moment, enjoying the strange sensation. It wasn't creepy, or disturbing: somehow peaceful, instead, like walking into a clearing still vibrating with energy of someone who'd just left.

A wonderfully lovely conch shell is nestled in the grass. It is strange to see this so far inland...

Someone has dropped this on Vale territory, and he paused for a moment, ears pricked and gaze riveted forward. A Tidewalker, perhaps? There was no red poppy or white lily of peace; he had almost stepped on it while out on midnight patrol, only the play of silvery moonlight over the whorls on its surface preventing it from tripping him up.

Someone had left this here as a message. He picked it up in his mouth, careful not to break it, and imagined the taste of the salt water which had thrown it up on shore. He'd have to bring this to Bird, as a message; they'd missed a visitor.

You find an injured mouse. You can either retrieve it as a snack for Never Idle and his cranes (Success!).

One of the tenets of the Vale is that the sick, injured, deformed or otherwise unwell are removed from the swamp as a whole, no matter what the cost or why the reason. It means that even a gentle soul like Wintershadow does not bat an eyelash when he comes across the injured mouse lying in the grass. One of its legs is broken; the thing does little more than squeak and twitch at him when he approaches. He picks it up by the tail, letting it dangle, and will return it to Never Idle and his cranes.

Either a quick death by being swallowed by a crane, or a lingering one left to die out in the sun -- Wintershadow supposes he has chosen wisely.

You hear Never Idle chiding you in a strangely metallic voice: "Work faster! Work faster!" But then you realize it's only a mocking-raven, who must have grown up near the stag's place of business.

Wintershadow glances up at it, gaze mild -- the same sort of mild, judgement-free tone that infuriated those with .. more volatile temperaments. "I am," he says, musically -- the raven cocks a bright eye at him. "Go tell your friend."

You find a marvelously-intact shed snakeskin.

Another thing to go to Never Idle; though he might not use it now, there's always the chance it might be useful later. Nothing is wasted; everything is valuable. It's easy enough to carry draped over his back.

You locate a perfectly round, enormous boulder. It is exactly what Never Idle needs--but you're going to need help to uproot and move it. Help required. Success!

It is exactly what Never Idle requires -- but there's no way he's going to be able to move it; it's almost shoulder-high, and sunk down into the swamp. It is warmed by the sun, though, so it's not unpleasant to wait leaning against, while a friend comes by to help.

When help arrives, it is in the form of a white doe, who trots into the sunlight near the boulder and stops abruptly when she sees Wintershadow resting against its massive side. "I admit when I heard that you'd sent for help this wasn't exactly what I pictured," she quipped, sassy but kindheartedly amused. "I take it you need a big strong doe to help you move this?" she continued, grinning at him and flipping a strand of hair behind her ear with a flick of her head before taking a quick lap around the boulder, scoping it out. "Hmm. It looks pretty deep in there. Might take a bit of teamwork."

"That's what I was hoping for," says Shadow, mildly; he is not a strong buck, though he is also not a weakling. He might be physically fit, but he cannot move a boulder of that size himself, and doubts that even the Vale's as-yet-unnamed totoma could cause the thing to budge. He blows hair out of his face and feathers rattle as he tosses his head. "Let's get to it, then."

Wintershadow is not the easiest member of the Vale for Knapweed to get along with, especially on a one-to-one basis -- he is quiet to her boisterous, restrained to her outgoing -- but she likes him nonetheless, and certainly respects him. She can see Whisper in him, very much her father's daughter, and that makes their interactions easier. She only hopes her frequent outbursts -- joking, silly, occasionally nagging -- do not bother him.

It takes a good hour and a lot of sweat and mud between the two of them to dig down deep enough to get enough leverage on the boulder to pry it out of the depths of the swamp -- but out it finally comes, with a schluck of wet earth. Rolling it back to Never Idle is much easier, in comparison, and the mud covering their hides serves to keep them cool as they journey, so in the end everyone is satisfied.

By the time they roll it into Never Idle's territory, Shadow's flanks are heaving and much of his long silvery-white hair is plastered to his face, neck, and sides -- but he will turn a smile on Knapweed that lights him up like a sunbeam. "Thank you," he says, though he sounds winded -- a hilarious thing indeed considering he is a Vale caretaker, and the head of the Vale. But for once Knapweed gets to see past that ironclad restraint and through to the less subdued parts of Shadow's personality. "No way I could have done that myself."

A Kin has died here, perhaps this past winter. Its carcass has long since decayed to merely bones, and on a tree above its resting place someone has scrawled the symbol for a name, and a shape like a ripple in a still pool. Strangely, they have accompanied the marker with the symbol for a safe place.

Vale tenants prescribe that the kin be left alone -- and it is, as much because of that as because the marker for 'safe place' is still there. Wintershadow spends quite a bit of time in the clearing, spending silent time with the bones and the name symbol -- resting, perhaps, or merely thinking. Around the kin the grass has grown in thicker and lusher, greener; there are small white flowers scattered here and there, like chips of bone that have been knocked off.

When he is ready to move on, he leaves for a time and comes back, putting a bouquet of white poppies -- the flowers the Vale uses to signify 'friend' or 'safe place,' at the bones' feet.

Your nosy poking around has disturbed an angry old mare, who chases you off her land. You escape without incident.

Apparently his wandering has led him farther west than he'd realized -- past the unspoken line where swamp gave way to marsh and then saltwater flats. He'd been lost in his own head, humming a song -- composing one, really, a new one he'd thought of in a dream -- when suddenly he noticed his hooves weren't making the same sound. The schluck of sucking mud had given way to the rasp of sand, and before that the rasp of sawgrass, and before he could even think to look around and ascertain where he was ..

"You!"

Wintershadow's head jerked up with a rattle of feathers. Before he had time to explain himself, the mare -- gnarled like a piece of driftwood, with ephemeral wings and a tangle of matted hair across one eye -- advanced on him. He thought, in the confused moment after, that she looked like some sort of large reptile, all sleek and menacing.

"You Vale types, always putting your noses where they don't belong," the mare hissed; "go on, we've got enough on our plates here without you asking about sick plants."

He hauled himself up, suddenly blazing with indignation, a far more intense emotion than he usually presented, and the mare laughed in his face. The indignation suddenly fizzled out like he'd poured water over a salamander; that laugh made him feel like a foal.

"But I--" Wintershadow started, with the intent to promise her he hadn't meant to intrude, and he'd thought the Vale was on friendly -- friendlier -- terms with the Tidewalkers, but the mare narrowed her eyes and actually hissed to cut him off.

"You've stepped across a patrol line. See to it that you don't do it again!"

When Wintershadow tells this tale to Wood Spider, later on in the evening when they are safely gathered around the Vale's biggest tree to bed down for sleep, the other mare laughs her tinkling laugh and regards him with her wise blue eyes -- that he was fooled by Bitterleaf's bluster, when he would likely have been begrudgingly welcomed.

The mud again -- Wintershadow heaves up a sigh that seems to come straight from the core of his being. At least this time he hasn't put a foot in it, or dragged his hair through it; this time, because he got lucky, he decides to tell Never Idle about it. Maybe he can fashion some sort of dye or clay out of it, and may he have joy of it, the buck thinks.
