Eowyn was such a dry and forgiveless place, Gellion found himself remembering; the kind of place that needed to see a little rain once in a while, so that there was grasslands. Maybe then the hunting wouldn't be so sparse. Many of those who lived here on the frontier herded beasts; it seemed the only way to ensure there was meat on the table, he admitted.
The apprentice's blade flickered with light as he knelt beside a small watering hole, glancing around to make sure there weren't any dragons circling overhead before he knelt to refill his travelling skins. He was hungry, hungry enough that his stomach grumbled and roared under his slow gulping of water, but hunger wasn't a stranger for him. He knew his limits, how far to push before he would be pushing too much.
Gel's gaze fell to outlines appearing on the ridge, as though summoned by the churning ache in his stomach, a Dalak stepped over the ridge, fearlessly strutting toward him and the water with its over-large body and angry eyes. It paused as it spotted him and screeched, as the beasts were wont to do at every opportunity.
Another bird appeared on the horizone and Gel shifted, noticing their aggressive gait; great, the featherbrains were being all territorial.
He wiped his sweating palms on his trousers and levelled his sword at the first beast as it took to charging at him. "Come on, I'm sure one of you will make a good roast."
That was when the third Dalak launched at him from behind; kicking out with its powerful legs and knocking him down. Gel cursed as sand and dirt ran over his face.

It was the squwaking of the Dalak that first got Merikh's attention, a sound he had heard before but never really put much stock in. He'd heard that they tasted fairly good but he didn't really bother with them since he was mostly after challenging opponents. Not to mention that he had plenty of money to buy food in the little port town, he had no reason to hunt for his own meals. Sure, if he ever ran out of supplies then he'd go after them but as it stood he had zero interest in them at the present. As such he just continued on forward, that was until his bodyguard Yolana gave pause, turning toward the commotion the birds were kicking up.
Turning in that direction he asked, "What? Their just Dalak, why do you care so much, Yoyo?" He scanned the horizon, looking in the direction that the birds were heading in, and spotted someone laying in the sand. Seemed as though the birds were picking on someone... and Merikh couldn't help but to chuckle, amuzed by the fact that someone was actually getting picked on by birds of all things. The laugh got him a look from Yolana and he couldn't help but to give a little sigh, "What? It's funny." He commented, then sighed, "Fine, fine. We will get a closer look but I can tell you already I am not saving bird bait over unless he or she is of our people." Anyone else he'd leave to the birds, he'd be damned if he sullied his blade saving some nobody.
Upon getting a bit closer he found himself looking at a boy, a younger then he was though he couldn't quite guess at an age from here, and sighed a bit when he realized what he was looking at. It was in fact an Oblivionite, one who was getting taunted by Dalak, "This is a sad day for Oblivionites everywhere." He told Yolana, reaching back to take his blade off his back, "How about you wait here, I will go and save bird bait over there and then we can continue on to the port town." Getting side tracked would slow him down and prevent him from getting home as quickly as he would like but it was alright, he couldn't just leave a fellow Oblivionite in such a state, not when he or she could very well be useful to Merikh later. He was always looking for possible allies amongst his own after all. The way he saw it bird bait over there might very well be a good soldier given a whole lot of attention by the right trainers.
As he approached he lifted his weapon up, swinging it at one of the birds that seemed more interested in the fallen apprentice then it did in Merikh, lopping it's head off in one strike. It collapsed and the one standing next to it was quick to race out of range for the time being. Turning his attention from the fallen bird to the fallen boy he said, "Come on, get up! You can't let the Dark Lady see you in such a state."

Clearly the beasts had a little more intellect than he would normally grant to such animals; they were not usually good at sneaking up on travellers; or attacking them, but then perhaps it was just the wrong season to be in the Dalak's territory; some beasts were like that. Harsh claws raked across Gel's exposed arms and the birds made quite a fuss as he tried to re-orientate where they were when the first attacker was joined by the other two.
Gellion wiped the dirt from his face, frowning because it was hardly how he had wanted to spend him afternoon; covered in dirt and fighting with a bunch of dump creatures; but if the birds wanted to pick a fight; he had a campfire with their name on it.
Gellion frowned as he heard someone approaching and blood splattered the ground in front of him. He rolled away from his attacking Dalak's and got to his feet with practised ease. His blade slashing out at the second beast as it took a step toward him; gutting the animal, his mouth shifting into a gruesome smile as he did. There was something infinitely satisfying about burying a blade in a living body; nothing else quite compared to it.
Only then did his gaze turn to his savior and widen in slight surprise. Another Oblivionite out here? How nice to see a familiar lack of eyes.
"The Dark Mother can see me naked and alone, if she wished it." Pride was for fools. Gellion didn't need pride, just some talent and power.

Merikh watched as the Oblivionite boy took advatage of his attack, rolling to his feet and dispatched one of the birds himself. It was a nice sight to see, it meant that he was worth saving he thought to himself before he he turned his attention to the third bird. The creature stopped around a bit, screeched at them, but it didn't flee. It was a rather strange sight for sure, one would think that they would be smart enough to at least flee upon the death of not one, but two of its comrades... but then again it was something he'd seen many times before in the past. How often did he fight with dragons that decided to stand their ground even when he took them down one by one? Most creatures were too stupid and brave for their own good.
He turned back to the younger male when spouted off about what he thought, something that caused him to lift an eyebrow before he started to laugh, "You are a strange one, aren't you bird bait?" No matter, better to see him in this sort of mood instead of being some sort of cowering weakling. That would have meant that the side tracking would have been a waste of his time, this one though... he was interesting enough. Turning back to the last of the birds when he heard it charging at him he didn't even move, merely lifted his sword up in a flash, allowing the avian to impale itself upon his blade. He starred down at it for a moment, then laughed as he jerked his blade back. Once the weapon was free he gave another slash, once more beheading the creature. Better to finish it off quickly, he had no interest in leaving any opponent, even a stupid one, to suffer. Instead he ended his battles quickly.
Turning back to the apprentice he flicked his blade to the side, removing the blood from it, before he returned the weapon to the sheath he carried it in, "So, bird bait, are you lost?" He asked, wondering what the kid was doing out this far. Surely he was far too young to be battling against Kiandri and Firani, especially if he was getting beat up by Dalak. He had to be lost, it was all that made sense if you asked Merikh.

Gel watched the warrior dispatch the Dalak with expert-ease and nodded appreciation of the killing instinct in his saviour. He brought his own blade to his mouth, licking the blood off and ignoring as his stomach gave a very loud, appreciatory grumble. The salty blood was good, and he didn't mind it at all, besides the Dalak's had owed him a drop or two. He was careful with his blade, he'd cut himself once or twice before and it wasn't the best way to eat, but fresh blood on his sword needed to be cleaned and he wasn't inclined to waste it on the dirt.
"I've been called strange before." He said with a shrug, kneeling over his own kill and cutting the creature's head off. If his memory served, they were best when roasted; like any good meat; although versatile, like other game-beasts. He started cutting into the bird while he spoke, smiling happily as its internal organs spilled out. "Although never bait, before. And if you are trying to annoy me with the nick-name, it won't work."
He pulled out a skinning knife from his pack and set to work on the beast with clear, concise effort; his smile turning almost tantric as he did. This was two of his favourite activities combined into one. His stomach growled again and he glanced up at the other Oblivionite, apologetic for the noise. "I owe you thanks for killing those two birds... are you going to eat them?"
He shook his head at the lost comment. "Not lost, not today. I bought a better map." Implying that it did happen on other days.

"Mmm, annoy you? No, just a nick name since I don't know who you are." He said, giving a lazy sort of shrug before he watched as the boy set to work cleaning the bird that he'd killed himself. Seemed as though he needed the birds for their meat, something that Merikh really wasn't in need of. As such when the other asked him he tilted his head to one side. Was he going to eat them? He gave a little shake of his head, "If you want them, take them, but I don't really require the meat myself." He the kid wanted them then he was welcome to him he thought to himself.
When the boy commented on how he wasn't lost 'today' Merikh lifted an eyebrow, finding the statement to be a rather strange one, though the comment about the map made it make sense. So that meant that he had gotten lost before getting the 'better map' huh? Interesting. Well, at least he was still alive, right? Even if he'd been roughed up by birds he was still alive which was better then nothing. Crossing his arms over his chest he said, "I am guessing then, since you aren't lost, that you don't want to travel with us back to town, hm?" If this was where bird bait wanted to be then he'd leave him here to clean the birds, otherwise he'd bring him along as far as the town at least.
He'd rather not leave a potential ally out in the middle of nowhere but he wasn't really about to drag him along either, it wasn't really his style to drag a unwilling kid about. That would just make him look bad, not a thought that he cared for in the least bit.

Right, names. Social niceties and all that. "Gellion." He straightened up and held out his right hand, splattered in blood for shaking, not worried if the other accepted the hand or not.
"I need to eat before I go anywhere and while I was headed to town, I don't like to pass up free meat, especially Dalak. I think I have some... ah, yes, seasoning. Never leave home without it." Although he often left home without clothing and other essential supplies- never his seasoning.
He splashed a little water on his cuts, obviously not bothered by it; the Dalak hadn't gotten much chance to really break his skin more than a little since it had attacked from behind. He was more mussed than really in a state, and either his wounds didn't hurt, or he didn't care to admit it.
Gel regarded the other figure that his saviour had with him for a moment, lifting an eyebrow in wariness that they hadn't approached. He didn't blame the Oblivionite for travelling with someone else; it could be dangerous out here.
"I suppose I can make something for afternoon supper; you won't reach the town today, regardless, I noticed a sandstorm sweeping across the flatfield between here and there." He motioned to a rocky outcropping that he'd spied the watering hole and storm from in the distance.

"Seasoning?" Now that was probably the weirdest thing that he'd ever seen in recent memory. He couldn't ever recall seasoning being important to him when he was packing for any of his trips but it would appear as though it were rather important to Gellion. What an odd boy he thought to himself, "Ahhh, well, enjoy I suppose." At least the meat would come in handy to someone he thought to himself.
Merikh turned about to head on his way, when the boy sudden spoke up about an approaching sandstorm. It something that caused him to freeze in place before he turned to looked at Gellion, then toward the direction that he was talking about. A sandstorm? Ugh, what a pain! This was going to going to slow him down to a painful degree, wasn't it? Giving a sighing sound he turned to look over at Yolana who was standing by, keeping a watch, but gave a sigh shrug in response.
"Hm, well, I suppose that we will have to hold off in our journey. So where are you planning on staying to avoid the storm?" He can't say that he'd ever ran into one of the sand storms as of yet. He had been lucky to this point, but no matter, this merely meant it would be one more day before he was on his way home. Not as though he'd of gotten home instantly as it were, he still had a long ship ride ahead of him after all, "Bah, what a pain. Here I thought I would be on my way home but I suppose this is the will of the Dark Lady, perhaps she wanted me to find you." If that were the case then he supposed that he could give the kid a bit of his time.

Gellion shrugged at the other and motioned toward the outcropping he'd used for vantage point earlier. "There's a bit of a cave in there."
He shrugged at the comment of the other about their meeting being fate, he'd never held much stock in the Dark Lady's involvement in her people; mostly for their own nature, if she wanted stronger, more loyal warriors, she certainly wasn't going about it the right way; but who was he to complain; his goals aligned right with hers; fight, become stronger. Gellion grabbed the gutted bird and lifted it so only the back would drag in the sand behind him; he regarded the other two mournfully; he hated to waste them but... but there wasn't much room for them in his pack. With a sigh he started moving. "Then by all means, shall we find a spot? I saw some kindling for a fire, I make a nice roast Dalak, actually. Better than rations." (final word count: 1,200)
