April had always been a fickle beast- or at least, Camille continued to say. This was the Hamsa's first spring and Tatiana was surely beginning to learn the in like a lion, out like a lamb terminology. Only this lamb was rather obnoxious. The temperatures were so cold at night, Tatiana lived for the sunlight and warmth. She spent most of her mornings bundled in a bathrobe, bumping around the kitchen and stealing the warmth from Troxel's coffee, boiling water until someone took pity and made her a mug of tea.

This expedition was a special one- given the weather and the season. The rising humidity and constant storms made Cam ache all over from his injuries. Tatiana was grateful for him braving everything for her. Troxel was remiss to have a normal shift at DHS- leaving in the morning with a flick of her feathers and a kiss atop her mass of hair. There had been an hour of lounging with her uncle Cam before the older man suddenly piped up 'Orchids'.

He was crouched over the computer and returned her inquisitive gaze with, "What? You're not a kept dog, the weather's nice, let's go on an adventure..." Defensive... It was funny to her.

"Orchids," she mirrored before they were in the car and driving north.

Gambino Horticultural College and Botanical Gardens. It was like a fairytale from her books all alight. There were flowers everywhere, wrought iron gates with Ivy budding on the side. Most of the flora outside was still very green, bright and filled with new life. Tatiana hadn't seen anything like it before as she was born in the dregs of winter, death by ice and snow. She scrunched her nose and breathed deep, the scents and sounds bringing her new life.

"Cam, I love it here, I'm never leaving," She stated, hands intertwined over her chest, eyes wide. Her hair was loose, waved and curled from a t-shirt curling experiment the night before. It was warm enough to wear a simple pink sundress without need for a coverup. Her hair was pushed from her face using an starscape designed gold headband, matching the bangles present on her wrists. Her wings flitted happily in the warmer air, stretching out completely before turning to face cam. She clutched her mint green shoulder purse and nearly bounced on her axis.

"Can I go explore please? Pllleeeassse? I'll meet you at the front in thirty minutes, I promise?," Tatiana nearly begged. However, Cam was always the lenient one when it came to expeditions. He gave a slow shrug and pulled out his cell phone.

"Y'go' dis on y', dove?" He asked, leaning against the car, fiddling with his cane and prosthetic for a moment before standing tall. Tatiana immediately delved into her purse and lifted her own, waving it to Cam.

"Of course," She called back- bouncing happily, "Oh! And it's charged this time!"

"Yeah, Y'call me in thirty minutes, bu' h'll meetchu in an hour, got it?"

"Absolutely! Ahh! Thank you so much, Cam!" The high energy Raevan leapt at the short man- nearly bowling him over before taking off to the exhibit.

With spring well under way, Xiu was looking forward to the warmer months ahead. It felt good to not constantly be plagued by cold fingers, cracked lips and numb cheeks. While the height of summer may entail sweatiness and stickiness (which were both horrible in their own special way), Xiu decided that for the moment, all was good. A little bright with a chance of rain later on maybe but still perfect day for an outing.

Which was a good thing as there was an orchid exhibition in the Gambino Horticultural College and Botanical Gardens. Xiu had read about the exhibition on a poster across the street and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to brighten the house up a little with some springtime flowers.

Slipping on a modest cotton jumper over a well ironed white shirt (Lazarus had picked the set at the local mall), Xiu then left a message for his guardian on the dining table; telling her of his whereabouts.
That done, the Sigel then took the next bus available to the Gambino Horticultural College and Botanical Gardens.

The Gardens, which has seemed so quiet and sleepy during the winter months was now flushed with the new life of spring. Flowers of every kind and colour were beginning to bloom (if they have not already). It was a truly breathtaking sight to behold.

Throngs of tourists were already ambling along with their smartphones and cameras and slowly but surely the crowd was making its way towards the main event. The orchid exhibition.

While aware of the existence of many species and hybrids of orchids, to actually see them in person was a different experience altogether. Never before had Xiu seen such vibrant colours or such delicate petals. These flowers had clearly been cultivated by professionals.

“And the price clearly shows it too,” muttered the Sigel softly as he glanced at the price tag that was tucked discreetly beside the pot. In his musings, Xiu was unaware that he was practically floating shoulder to shoulder with a fellow raevan.

Tatiana had been having the time of her, admittedly short, life. She practically raced through the exhibit, needing to collect all the information before she selected which section to focus on first. She suddenly found herself at the consumer portion of the gardens. They sold these plants. They weren't just for science. She frowned a bit and looked at the sparse landscape of the orchids for sale.

It was sad here, she decided. The exhibits beyond attempted their best to show the plant life in as close to a realistic environment as possible. Suddenly she saw a fellow Raevan, the telling sign being the ribbon pocking beneath his sweater. That compacted all her ill thoughts of this tiny corner as she wobbled towards him and merely tapped his shoulder.

"Yenno, this isn't nearly a tenth of the flowers you'll see in the real exhibit. They have an entire water garden devoted to developing lillies.... What are you doing here?" Tatiana inquired, lilted english falling accented off her tongue. However it wasn't as harsh or, dare she say it, as unintelligible as Camille's. The tamil influenced diction was much more sophisticated than Cam's Cajun drawl. She'd never say that to his face, of course.

Xiu was startled when he felt the tap on his shoulder. It wasn’t often that someone would be inclined to pat a half formed being on his shoulder and to offer some advice on the exhibition at hand.

“I’m afraid lilies aren’t quite what I am looking fo- ... Oh,” said Xiu when he finally came face to face with the person (or should he say...raevan?) who had spoken.

“Oh,” said Xiu again as he took in the other’s form. This was a new Raevan; one that he had not met before.

“I’m looking for some orchids for my guardian. I’m Xiu by the way and you are?” asked the Sigel in return. Briefly the Sigel’s blue eyes scanned the crowds, looking for anyone who might be the Frei’s guardian. While seeming independent, the Sigel was pretty sure that the Frei before him was a little too young to be out on her own.

"My name is Tatiana. Tatiana Mae Troxel," She held out her hand, the other one swinging behind her back and gripping the ends of the shorter layers of her hair and twisting them, "Pleasure to meet you Xiu. What is your family name or do you not have one?"

Her bangled tinkled lightly in through the delicate hand shake. She grinned and furrowed her brows looking from orchid to orchid. She pointed at a Phalaenopsis - a be-spotted purple orchid with a few blooms not yet breached. The color was deep and the white speckles reminded her of both Cam and Harrison. A large grin overcame her face and she moved closer to it, trying to mask the unbalanced and lets be honest- drunkard dip to her movement.

"Phalaenopsis. Moth Orchid. Easiest to care for. I'm sure you could use Cam's laptop to research care. That instrument has everything." She furrowed her brow, placing a finger between her lips in query and glanced back up at Xiu.

"That's just my suggestion."

"Yenno it ain' jus' my laptop? There are many types of laptops an' they can be owned by any priva'e purchaser," the Cajun sounded spent, out of breath and looked the same. His complexion was far more pale than usual. He rested heavily on his cane and gave Xiu a very obvious sizing up. It was near impossible to be intimidating the way he was.

"Uncle Cam, y'said I could have the hour," Tatiana chided, crossing her arms and flitting her wings.

"Well tha' was b'fore y'started t'chat up men, lil' girlie." Cam rolled his eyes, "Gotta make sure he ain' a murderer or a sicko."

"He's a very gentle Raevan, Camille," Tatiana said a bit more exacerbated, "I bumped into him here and he's just looking for a plant for his guardian!"

"Tatiana, I'm sorry I jus'..." Cam stopped, realizing this was the equivalent of arguing with a teenager and turned his attention to the Sigel, "Camille Moore, D'y'intend on escortin' m'pseudo niece aroun' t'day or are ye jus' gonna getchur pretty flower an' leave..."

"இரண்டு ஆண் பாதுகாவலர்கள்? நீங்கள் யாரையும் தொடர்பு கொள்ள முடியாது." Tatiana muttered to herself, turning away from the conversation in embarrassment and placing her red tinted fingers to her forehead. There might have been an eye roll in there. Trainslation:Two male guardians? You cannot communicate with anyone.

The Sigel reached out and took Tatiana’s proffered hand. “The pleasure’s all mine,” replied the Sigel with a smile. There was certainly nothing coy about this little lady. “It just so happens that I do, in fact have a surname. It’s Lee,” said Xiu.

It wasn’t that the Sigel was ashamed of his surname or anything. It was just that...however you put it;- Xiu Lee or...(as the Chinese would prefer) Lee Xiu, the name had a rather feminine ring to it. At least...in Xiu’s opinion it did.

The awkward dip that Tatiana gave off while trying to point out the Moth Orchid did not escape the Sigel’s attention. She’s young. Very young thought the Raevan with some measure of horror. His first instinct was to reach out and help the younger raevan steady herself but the Sigel quickly discarded that idea when Tatiana made it very clear that she would not want any attention drawn to that slip up.

“That is indeed interesting” said Xiu sincerely. He was impressed with Tatiana’s knowledge; the fact that she had actually taken the initiative to read up on orchids prior to the exhibition; and the frei’s ability to do independent research using a computer. Xiu very much doubted he would be able to do the same were he as young as her. “An orchid that requires minimal care would definitely be an advantage,”

That was when Xiu became aware of the human that was approaching them. The man seemed worried and out of breath. Xiu did not blame him. Any responsible guardian should feel worried about their young charge.

Nevertheless the Sigel felt himself stiffening under the guardian’s watchful glare. As unintimidating as her guardian was, it would not do to give him the wrong impression. “A good day to you sir,” said Xiu politely while Tatiana huffed over the premature independence she had. It was frustrating to be under constant surveillance but...

“I’m afraid I would have to agree with your guardian,” said Xiu quietly. “There are many untrustworthy characters out there made all the more dangerous if you are...,”

Here the Sigel hesitated. He would have liked to say ...if you are unable to spot malevolent intentions like me but the Sigel was reluctant to let Mr. Moore in on his abilities; especially so after the guardian had expressed his suspicion of Xiu being either a murderer or a sicko. Not that Xiu had perfectly clean hands mind you; he had witness a killing (and not report it), taken a life (kind of) and drank blood. That was definitely...grey area territory right there.

But that was neither here nor there and Xiu ended his sentence with “...all the more dangerous if you are young ,”

Turning his attention to Cam, Xiu made a small bow. “It would be an honour to chaperone Tatiana. That is...if the lady chooses to agree,” said Xiu, remembering the frei’s independent nature.

"Funnily enough h'ain' h'guardian which is why h'm extra cautious. H'd rathuh y'lef' her well--" Cam started but was cut off by Tatiana returning to the conversation, sliding between Xiu and Camille, staring hard down at the shorter man.

"You stop it now. I understand your intentions but they're crossing a strong line we've long since marked in the sand, Cam." She crossed her arms again tilting her head to the side, "You're tired, your leg is killing you- as apparent by the sweat on your brow and the flush missing from your face. Go sit on a bench. Enjoy some flowers and let me make friends with some Raevans."

Cam wanted to rear up if only because, god damn it all, he was the one in charge here. He opened his mouth and slowly closed it, letting the rational mind come back to the front and rubbed his brow, leaning heavily on the cane.

"Lee was on the list right? The phone tree Troxel has on the fridge. Or is my memory that much more superior right now?" She gained a coy smile, playing on Camille's competitive spirit. Cam furrowed his brow and gave the universal 'you little s**t' look with a bite of his bottom lip.

Tatiana took the moment Camille used to flick back through his memory and tilted her head to address Xiu. "We're eidetics~" She explained with a strong wave of child like pride.

Cam looked a bit defeated and rubbed his nose, "I don' like dis, Tatiana..."

"The first time is always the hardest, you know that. Lemme grow up a little ok?"

Cam looked at Xiu and gave a very large frown, furrowing his entire face to a very concerned look. "I'm sorry, y'seem t'unnerstan' though Xiu... Normally 's me an' m'lady battlin' th'world..."

"Oh you are so not allowed to be that protective. Empty nest syndrome isn't even close to happening please." Tatiana rolled her eyes and moved to hug Cam before sliding under his arm and facing Xiu.

"I've gotta text him every once and a while and give you a call after a certain while and meet up at a predesignated time." Tatiana paused and looked to Cam before her face lit up and she turned back to Xiu, "OH yes! And my actual Guardian is a federal agent so try and harm me and he'll find you."

In that moment Tatiana had the largest grin plastered across her face.

Xiu watched the exchange of words between human and raevan. Part of him was amused by the lively banter and yet...another part of him was a little affronted by the manner in which the young frei was treating a human who obviously meant well. But who was he to interfere?

Folding his wings back, Xiu smiled when Tatiana explained that both she and Cam were eidetics. “Two eidetics within a household? That is remarkable,” said Xiu with a nod. Coming from a family who valued education and books himself, the Sigel could appreciate (and envy) a skill such as that.

“And no worries Cam (may I call you that?). I’ll see that no harm comes to the young lady,” said Xiu with a reassuring nod followed by a small chuckle. “What could possibly happen in an orchid exhibition held in a horticultural college?”

When Tatiana mentioned that her actual guardian was a federal agent, a look of surprise crossed the Sigel’s feature. “Would said guardian be... Harrison Reed Troxel by any chance?” asked Xiu with some measure of curiosity. “ An army officer of some sort? He carried himself well during the incident in the forest,” said Xiu. “I admire his leadership skill,”

Cam stood a little subdued, brow furrowed and resting a hand on his hip as he watched with incredulous eyes. Trox really needed to sit the young Raevan down and discuss privacy. Trox's career shouldn't be advertised and he felt a little upset about how candidly Tatiana spoke of his own memory. That information was his. The knowledge hungry frei, despite her efforts of acting independent, was indeed very wet behind the ears and green with youth. He gave a small defeated sigh and looked amongst the plants.

"Yeah, y'kin call me Cam," He said softly, wavering slightly in place and tilting his head, removing the hand form his hip and rubbing his arm, "Gimme a call when y'through. Gotta catch m'second wind bu' h'd love t'join y- eh?"

Tatiana pursed her lips and slowly raised her brows as she turned to Xiu. That was her guardian but what incident and what forest?

"That's his name and he's an officer in the reserve forces now? You know him?" the Hamsa felt a little affronted- she didn't like being left in the dark. Especially when it involved her family and her community of Raevans. But then again, how would this have ever been brought up in conversation.

"Yeah tha's him, aight... he told me abou' tha'. Jungle business," he snickered, "tore an ACL during that- sounds like they got everyone out and all are receiving or have received the attention needed so all's well."
PostPosted: Sat Aug 09, 2014 8:02 am

“I do not know him well,” admitted Xiu. “But I remember his name. He introduced himself as such above the chaos,”

Then realizing that Tati might appreciate being brought up to date, Xiu gave the frei a quick summary of their quest to search for the missing Doctor, the effects of the “eye” of fear and how they had finally managed to defeat the horrible thing.

“While the search party got out alive, I am afraid that Dr. Kyou is still unconscious,” said Xiu turning to Cam. “And this worries me; not only because he is the person responsible for the creation of raevans but also…because he is a guardian to a friend of mine…,”

“But I should apologize for bringing this dreary topic up,” said Xiu with a slight dip of his head. “We shouldn’t be spoiling such a lovely day as this; Ummm… Cam, if Miss Tati and I could take our leave? There’s going to be a band playing soon and it would be a treat to get an unobstructed view”

Tatiana honestly couldn't follow much of what Xiu was telling her- she couldn't put herself in the situation and gauge how she would react, but some of those things mentioned were terrifying to her. The hair on her arms raised as a full shudder wracked the newborn- and to think Harrison was in this mess. Was Revontulet in it too? What about Doucette? She catalogued all these questions away because why hadn't Harrison explained this to her. She felt a void open in her rune, a sickness and nausea. These feelings were also new and very uncomfortable. She didn't like it and honestly wanted Xiu to stop so she could hang onto her ignorance for a while longer. Instead, the frei bit her tongue, arms coming up and gripping tight. Trying to look engaged in Xiu's summary but really just wanting to go back to the flowers.

Camille noticed his niece's discomfort, moving closer to her and pulling her protectively to his side, all while engaging Xiu with a soft but concerned grin, " 'F course they all got out alive," Cam started, squeezing Tatiana's shoulder and giving a small shrug, " They had Trox with them!"

He exclaimed in a joking manner- he's seen that man conduct maneuvers in Survival Scenarios no one could come close to competing with. But really he just wanted to lighten Tatiana's mood. She seemed older but was still young. Poor thing didn't even know what a coma was. Yet here Kyou was, in one...

"And I'm really sorry to hear that Dr. Kyou is still unwell," He didn't go on to mention that a coma over 14 days had little or no chance of returning back to normal brain function, the muscle atrophy, the lack of stimulation of the mind. There's no way a human could survive that and still be a fully functioning doctor. But then again, he didn't think rings could be in a planetless orbit. Or that a being could survive on just a torso... And eating energy from a falling object.

A lot was uncertain. So he hid his doubts. For Xiu and for Tatiana. He just gave a sigh while Tatiana moved away from his hold, fingers trailing in her long hair and shoulder for residual contact, "I'll have faith he'll be ok any time now. Keep him in m'prayers as I'm personally a prayin' man... Things will right themselves one way or anothuh. Always do. Right Tats?"

Tatiana turned to her uncle and gave a small but tight smile, "Yeah, you say you lost 20 lbs in one day."

"Forget weight watchers, find an RPG instead!" Cam gave a brilliant smile, fingers tangled with Tatiana's for a moment, squeezing before letting go, "An her guardian found her. It's beautiful how destruction creates happiness after a time..."

"A band?" Tatiana said in response to Xiu's question. Cam merely nodded with a good natured grin and upturned brows. He even gestured to the exit of the gift shop while Tatiana regained some of her fire.

"I didn't know there was music playing," Her smile grew so large, dimples forming on her cheeks as she regarded Xiu with wild violet eyes, "I love music!"

The Frei reached out her hand to the sigel. Waving to Camille as they moved away from the gift shop, "Do you often listen to music? Where? How? I know Harrison plays his in his car and on his computer but I want to find new songs... Cam actually plays guitar and has a very nice singing voice."

PostPosted: Sun Oct 26, 2014 8:56 am

The Sigel realized a minute too late that he had said too much. He should have realized that even though Tatiana was mature for her age, the young frei would still find the subject disturbing;- about evil eyes and one’s worst fears coming to life.

There was an awkward moment or two while the group sorted themselves out and the Sigel was clearly relieved when Tatiana showed interest in the prospect of watching a band play.

“Yes, it was written on one of the brochures,” said Xiu with an affirmative nod of his head. Taking Tatiana’s offered hand, Xiu paused just a moment to admire the younger raevan. Smiling with dimples and all, Tatiana was the picture of health and wholesomeness and her eyes...there was just a hint of mischievousness in them that told the Sigel that this was a raevan that knew what she wanted and knew how to go about getting it.

Laughing, Xiu shook his head. “No, I do not listen to music all that often, sadly. Only sometimes in the car when my guardian is driving or when someone turns the radio on in the living room. My guardian is fond of pop songs,”

“And I never would have guessed that Cam was the singing sort...err...not at first glance,” said Xiu looking impressed by this bit of information. “Does he sing often?”

Meanwhile, the band could be seen readying their instruments and preparing their score.

“In that case- I would love to see them,” The Hamsa flourished, allowing the flow in her skirt to twist about her ribbon. She beamed and perked her ears- feathered shell pitching the sapphire plumage to fan- listening for the sound of a quartet tuning, a guitarist strumming, someone humming- anything to get a lead on the band- what they might play and where they might be.

She hummed a little herself- nodding in time for a rhythm set in her head. Harrison rarely listened to music and since she had spent more time with her uncle, the absence of it in her home sunk like void. Her guardian was rather fond of the news, talk shows and maybe a few folky-type bands. And that was home, lulling and safe.

But Cam provided a drastic opposite. Little of his life was free of the sound of music or the scent of coffee. He was always singing something under his breath, drumming a beat with his fingers or humming as he stared absently. Even when motionless her uncle had life. That too was comforting.

“All the time… He sings with me,” Tatiana responded to Xiu’s assumptive thought, “Plays guitar-- but he doesn’t play it as well as his voice sings. And that’s ok. He’s got that husky cajun thing goin’ on-- surprisingly low for a human so tiny...”

“He jokes that it’s how he came here,” Tatiana started again after a thought, “Singing for people on promenades and saving any penny tossed in his hat. Doubtful and illogical but I think it’s a nice story.”

She paused her babel to take sight of the band, excitedly lifting her unoccupied arm and pointing with a stained finger, “I see them! I see the band. Flours and harmonics. I couldn’t be happier.”

The Sigel could not help but admire the youthful manner in which the Frei floated with her skirt swishing lightly about her ribbon. Such exuberance and enthusiasm! Xiu wondered if there ever was a time that he had been that full of energy. Probably not. He seemed to recall himself being mostly prim and proper and sometimes horrified at the careless antics of others.

Blue eyes turned to the Frei as she chattered on about Cam. If her stories were to be believed, Cam had led quite a colourful life during his younger days and it was no wonder that the man had cast a doubtful look in the Sigel’s direction when they had just met. One had to be street smart when living on the road after all and Tati would be considered as a very pretty lady by anyone’s standard.

“Flours and harmonics? Is that what they are called?” asked Xiu as he directed his gaze in the direction of Tati’s hand. From his vantage point Xiu could see several band members already in position. It would not be long now. “Let’s get going then. Otherwise all the good places would be taken,”

A crowd was already beginning to form around the space where the band was situated and for a moment, the Sigel was afraid that he would lose Tati in the ever expanding crowd. “Stick close by, Tati,” said Xiu to the Hamsa. “It would be troublesome if we were separated in this crowd,”
