She had yet to learn that the cafeteria's sole purpose seemed to be a punishment for those who spent their funds foolishly or at the least a perfect excuse to become one's own cook. Thus Nora noticed (at the back of her mind) that it seemed a little odd how the line to get lunch was shorter than expected given the size of the facility. She certainly wasn't late or early by any means either.

Nora had yet to learn that it was possible to avoid the mediocre food through shore leave and had already accepted this was going to suck.

More for us! Beatrix observed happily as they strode up and started filling their tray. It wasn't too terrible today: they had a decent supply of fruits, for one, and the meatloaf was . . . edible looking as opposed to the solid brick she was used to seeing. Topped off with a water bottle, it actually was a better meal than Nora was used to back home, where normally she forgot to feed herself and subsisted off ramen whenever West wasn't encouraging "cooking experiments".

"Actually, probably should do that for dinner just so I don't get rusty," she mused aloud, once again forgetting she could mentally communicate. It didn't occur to her that she might look strange. "Suggestions for a meal?"

. . .

"No, I don't have sausage."

. . .

"Taco? Eh, only tried those once. Not really my thing."

. . .

". . . Oh, you are perverse, d'you know that?"

Kylee was as new as Nora was, and still adjusting to life in Deus. Her theory on why the cafeteria seemed more empty than she was expecting, was that the other more experienced hunters were preoccupied with more important duties and thus sometimes either skipped meals or packed their own lunches. Besides, she had done so more often than not while cramming for finals when she was in college...

An apple and a slob of meatloaf was all she decided on having for now, unless the main course decided to be perfectly unpalatable--

Someone was talking in the line. Right in front of her.

She wasn't one to judge, not when she had communicated with her weapon out loud on multiple occasions to some embarrassment. But what caught her eye was the girls' uniform seemed awfully... familiar...

"I like your clothes." She quipped.

"You are the worst," Nora went on to say, scowling at thin air as Beatrix 'kekekekeke'd' her way around the Sun's mind. She sighed and was going to rub her head to ward off the oncomingheadache when she realized someone was actually talking to her. And probably noticing she was having a lovely conversation with a ghost.

"Oh. Err. Thanks," she replied distractedly, ready to turn and make her exit stage right before she stuck her foot in her mouth some more. But when Nora noticed the other girl's clothes, she paused.

"Huh. You an armor buff too?" she asked curiously. As far as Nora could tell, it wasn't extremely popular on the island (though she didn't understand why, given the point of armor to begin with). "Not a great idea in this weather, I know, but hey: part of the weight training, eh?"

"Oh, I'm just, you know... dressing for the part." Kylee replied, beaming at the other. "You know, fighting monsters and all sounds incredibly dangerous and even if there's training, it's always better to keep it safe." Though she supposed that if they were to go all out, it would be much too heavy and clunky to move around in. It was already a chore to carry Akila around in spear form for too many hours a day, but she was certainly working on her physical strength.

"I'm not that heavy." Akila retorted, and she had to bite back a smile.

"Exactly. And with everyone more than happy to tell me the next mission could be your last to boot," she added, putting on a gravelly tone. "Not that I don't believe them, but it's hard to take assurances from people who don't at least wear some sort of special vest if nothing else; even movies remember that part."

Nora wondered vaguely if that was because it actually didn't matter. Then she snorted to herself and grabbed her tray.

"Have to say, though, I thought Life was all pasty Asians in the labs," she remarked, remembering the techs that had helped her sort out her things. "Desk jockeys and science geeks and all."

Beat.

"...Er, no offense meant," Nora added awkwardly. "Didn't, er, think this sort of training was for you, so good on that. Good on you. Damn."

"Well, I'm pretty sure monsters don't use bullets though." Kylee said, giving a small shrug. Besides, bulletproof vests weren't very much help, were they? Even in movies, people ended up dying from popping bullets into their brain despite having worn such protective gear.

"Oh?" Rather than looking insulted, she looked quite surprised instead. Akila, however, started demanding answers on what exactly that meant and whether she was supposed to be affronted by the implication of the hunter she had picked. Kylee ignored her as she continued. "I actually haven't really met others from my division, so I'm not very sure if that description is accurate." That, and the one other Asian she had met had identified herself as being in Death. "I just think it's best to be prepared." She said pleasantly. "Which division are you in, then?"

"Bah. Bullets, projectiles, I'm sure it's useful for something," she said with a little handwave. "This place is basically science headquarters, eh? Probably have something like armor if they're a smart bunch." Nora wasn't going to dump her small collection either way, however eccentric or...space-taking...

However, she was more than happy to move the hell away from her faux pas by any means necessary.

Nora turned slightly to show her coat as she stepped away from the line behind them. "Sun. It's as good a fit as any, although I had a spar with one of the upper ranks and . . . let's just say I'd be a fool to backtalk any of them if they hit as hard as he did." She winced at the memory, at how Evan took her shield out completely with one hit.

Note to self: discuss with an experienced hunter about the attacks of Halloween citizens. After all, knowledge was something that would aid in preparation and strategy in the face of danger.

And really, Kylee thought that there had to be a good reason why armor wasn't something absolutely mandatory among all Hunters. After all, they were the newbies, and these people here were much much more experienced and battle-weary...

"Oh!" Sun. The one that has those more inclined towards offense, right? "It fits you." She said, smiling.

"Woah, I haven't even sparred with anyone yet." She admitted, tucking a stray strand of hair behind a ear. It certainly seemed like something to be nervous about, but practice made perfect, right? They all had to start from somewhere. "I've gotten offers though; just haven't set a date yet."

"That's what they tell me," Nora replied with a grin, proud to be part of her division in spite of the . . . risks tagged to it. "Spars aren't so bad, I think. Mean, I've only had one and that one was a doozy to be sure, but like they say: practice, practice, practice. I'll be happy to sit on your waiting list if you'll have me. But!"

She made a grand gesture at their not so grand food. "For now, some lunch, eh? I'm going to sit outside since there's some nice weather. Feel like joining in? I'm half considering just doing another tour of the place and eating on the go. Pretty large and all, lots of probably books and crannies to find."
