Gaia has made questing for items more difficult as of late.
BUT, something that works is posting a pretty quest thread in the Exchange forum.
You can keep track of your quest and there are generous Gaians that may help.
Then there's the whole "buy cash items then sell in MP" deal (which I do sometimes) if you can afford it and/or keep yourself in check so you don't overspend on pixels.

The easiest way to earn gold is either do art or make graphics or write if you re talented. A lot of art shops are bribe shops so that can help you out get the items you want in exchange for doing commissions.
You can also check out the Gaia Job Center guild they help people find jobs or workers depending on what you need. And it does work like an actual job where you get paid per how many you do per day..

Vending and exchanging works well. It's how most of the really rich people on this site get their gold, and tbh, it's not that difficult once you learn how to gauge prices correctly.
I decided to start again about a week or so ago and I've already tripled the gold that I started with.. and that's after not really doing it for years... and I'm super slow at it sometimes.
I would also suggest hoarding but that's pretty much obsolete when it comes to terms of long-term hoards because gaia keeps re-releasing everything. The best bet there is short term, but you would need a bit of gold to start with.
