The sunlight touched the mossy ground in tiny rays, filtering through the bushes that surrounded the mare. Roxana opened her eyes slowly, blinking sleepily. The air was crisp and cool and the sun was just peeking over the horizon. She couldn't see the sky but it was clear, with only sparse, wispy clouds occasionally floating by. She stretched her neck and climbed to her feet. She pushed through the bushes and the lovely forest she was in stretched all around her. She wasn't far from plains and wasn't far from a river; it was an ideal place to live and she had loved it from the first day she had spent here.
As fate would have it, she also had met a handsome stallion not long after she had found this beautiful spot, and although she hadn't admitted it out loud, she was falling in love with him, too. The spot he'd slept in next to her was empty, but still a bit warm, so she knew he wasn't too far away. She walked toward the river for a drink, hoping that she'd also run into him. Roxana smiled inwardly. Seeing him always delighted her.

Charon couldn't remember being this happy in his life, and he had been pretty blessed with an amazing family. The stallion woke up a little earlier and quietly and gently got up from his sleeping spot next to Roxanna. In the short time they had been together.....he felt like they had known each other for their entire lives. Charon quietly snuck away to find something to bring back for breakfast. Stopping to only take a drink from the refreshing cool river. The brightly colored stallion moved quickly to find what he was looking for. "I know those berry bushes are around here somewhere...aha!" Charon wasn't very hungry himself but he ate a small amount quickly so that what he brought back could all go to his lovely Roxanna. He cheerfully whistled as he selected the best and most fruit laden branch of fruit with great care. He snipped a branch and began to trot back. On his way he saw a form appear. "Roxamha" he called with his mouth full of branch, the ripe juicy raspberries swinging along as he trotted over to her. Charon placed the branch carefully at her hooves and then leaned his long neck to give her a morning nuzzle. "I was hoping to surprise you with breakfast." Charon blushed just a little bit as he talked. "Did you....sleep well?" He asked staring eagerly at her face.

Roxana's heart lept as she saw the stallion with colors just as bright as hers. She whinnied in excitement as he approached her with a branch of delicious-looking berries. There were few foods she enjoyed as much as fresh, ripe berries. As soon as she bit into them, their juice would splash across her tongue and the sweet flavors would fully capture her attention. But much more important than the impending breakfast was Charon. She stepped carefully over the berries and greeted him in return with a nuzzle of her own. "Good morning! Those berries look tasty," she told him. She looked shyly at the ground and continued, "I slept wonderfully...much better than when we're not together." She paused, then lifted her gaze and smiled at him. "Thank you for bringing breakfast! You're so sweet!" She nudged him playfully, then picked up the branch and started leading them back to their sleeping place.

Charon's insides flip flopped around as Roxana nuzzled him back. He had to struggle not to go all giddy mushy. "Good I'm glad you slept well." He beamed at her as she nudged him. "You are most welcome my radiant lady." Charon bowed slightly to Roxana and playfully nudged her back. The stallion followed the brightly colored mate back to their sleeping spot and watched over her as she had a nice breakfast. The sky was a crisp blue, white fluffy clouds lazed slowly overhead. A gentle breeze pulled at his mane as he kept a protective watch. "What you you like to do today?"....he glanced at her. "That is if you don't have any other plans today?" Charon waited to see what Roxana would like to do before he launched into suggestions.

She grinned at him. "Of course I have no plans, other than to spend the day with you," she said softly. Her heart felt full to bursting, overflowing with adoration for Charon. Then she gave him a concerned look. "You did remember to eat some, too, right?" She paused, hoping that she didn't sound like she was nagging. "I just ate them all and didn't even share with you!" Her smile faded somewhat as she waited for an answer. The sun had begun reaching its peak in the sky.
Her love for this stallion was unexpected, had come out of left field. She knew others might think them a bit crazy, for they'd only known each other for a very short time, but she already knew that she wanted to build a family with him. She'd resisted at first, telling herself not to go too fast, to enjoy the happiness for as long as it lasted and not to rush, but it was simply not possible to keep from falling in love. He was so kind, thoughtful, sweet; it was obvious to her that he somehow, incredibly, felt the same about her. The whole situation made her so happy that she couldn't keep the spring out of her step - even when she tried. Having grown up without a family (who knew how she got here!), she'd been worried that it would be difficult to find a stallion to settle down with, who she adored, and who also adored her. She'd never thought it'd happen so quickly or so surprisingly.

Charon smiled adoringly at the mare "Of course I did dear...then I hurried back to surprise you." He chuckled inwardly, as he had truthfully spent some time carefully picking out the best berries to bring back to Roxana. If it were possible for his grin to be any bigger it would as he beamed at her. "Those were Roxana only raspberries!" he gave a chuckle. Charon leaned against her side, thinking how lucky he was to have found such a wonderful soul. Even though they had only been together a short time, he felt as though they had always been destined to find each other. The stallion just stared at Roxana for a few moments taking it all in. "What do you think about taking a stroll to the beach? Maybe we can look for pirate treasure." He gave a goofy grin.

She smiled lovingly at him. "Thank you -- they were very delicious," she replied. His warmth and weight at her side made her feel safe and happy. Contentment spread through her, accompanied by gratitude for ever meeting this amazing stallion, and for the fact that he feels the same way about her as she does about him. It still seemed too good to be true at times, but she did her best not to question it. No matter how things turned out in their futures, she would always have the memories of their love for one another and that was enough for her. And she hoped with all her being that they would still be together long after they got old. She never would have guessed that she would fall so quickly or effortlessly, but she was glad to have him in her life.
Her attention refocused on Charon rather than on her internal monologue when he spoke again. "The beach sounds lovely," she said. "But where would we find pirate treasure?" She giggled at the thought of a 4-legged Soquili traveling around in the water, stealing the treasures of other Soquili. Would the pirate have to get out of the water and go find the treasures? Why didn't he (or she!) just travel by land in that case? Roxana had never encountered anyone remotely like a pirate. Her idea of what a pirate was like was so absurd that she supposed they probably didn't exist. There were all sorts of mythical tales about things that didn't actually exist. She didn't know if pirates were on the list of mythical things, but finding treasure, pirate or not, would be pretty fun.
But more importantly than pirates, she'd heard of a fantastic Star that granted the wish of some Soquili! While she assumed it was also just a myth, it was still commonplace to make a wish on it whenever it appeared. And since she had heard it would be out soon, perhaps they could catch a glimpse of it tonight. "You know, I heard that the Wishing Star is going to be out soon," she said. "Perhaps after we're done searching for treasure we could lay on the sand, watch the sun set, and see if it appears." She glanced sidelong at him, waiting for his reaction. Deep down, she knew what she wanted to wish for, even if she hadn't admitted it to anyone - including herself - yet. She held her breath unconsciously as she waited for his response, her gaze cast shyly downward and her front hoof tracing swirls in the dirt beneath her feet. The thought crossed her mind that Charon could have the same secret wish as her - how wonderful would that be!?
