It was a brisk evening in Sauti, and the sun was starting to set upon the horizon. The beach was somewhat chilly during this time of year, especially at night, making swimming difficult, but not impossible. However, even though something is possible, it doesn't mean that it should be done. Especially without a towel and a warm place to run to.
"Freezing... Freeeeziiing!" Natsu chattered, rocking back and forth from his position on the sand. How could he have been so stupid? The water was like ice this time of year and he forgot that fact every single year! He really needed to write himself a memo!

Luckily for Natsu, there was someone who would always remember these little things for him, and be prepared for when they would eventually happen. His darling husband, Viveka.
"Ooooh, Natsu!" The ice man scolded, wrapping the Bard in a large fluffy blanket. "You should know better than to go swimming in the winter! The water's too cold! You'll catch your death!"
He plopped himself beside Natsu and began to rub the blanket against his back and shoulders, creating more friction to make him warmer quicker. Such a silly boy, what was he thinking?

Natsu wriggled against the blanket as it was rubbed against him, but bit his tongue against whining about how harsh Viveka was being. He had been silly, thinking that swimming during this time of year would be wise, and his husband would only tell him that if he protesting against the roughness.
"I'm sorry, V-Viv." He said, smiling sheepishly. "I... I just wanted to t-test the wa-water! I should have waited..."

Viveka shook his head and wrapped the blanket around Natsu tightly, before grasping him in a tight hug. No bruises, no gashes, no hypothermia, and he was communicating, he would live, not that there was any doubt to begin with. But, you could never really tell with Natsu, could you? He was married to the man and had known him since they were children, and yet he still couldn't keep track of how impulsive he could be. Go figure, right?
"You should remember that early spring is still too cold by now, Natsu." He replied, leaning his head upon the carrot top's shoulder. "Bergchi forbid if we ever have children, you'd lead them right into frozen water in their underwear if I weren't here to catch you."

Natsu snuggled happily into the hug he was given and leaned into the chest of his lover, a chattering smile forming against his cold features. He loved being scolded by his Viveka, he always did it as if he were a mother. It was so cute!
"Oh, but the water... It calls me!" He exclaimed, extending his arm dramatically. "I could never and would never disobey it's siren song! I am nothing but a man of song, my love! Nothing more, nothing less!"
Viveka's next sentence caused him to pause, a thoughtful expression crossing his features. He lowered his arm back to his side, snuggled further into Viveka's embrace, and turned his head towards Viveka's neck.
"Well, why not?" He asked. "We could be parents... Couldn't we?"

Viveka rolled his eyes at Natsu's exclamation and rubbed against his lover's arms to help him get warm. Poetic words didn't make up for all of the silly things Natsu did, but it sure helped him get away with a lot of things despite that fact. It didn't help that he was cute, either. Oh, the things he did for the sake of love.
"...I." He stammered, taken aback by Natsu's question. "You think we could? I don't know of anyone who could help us, or even dream of helping us, Natsu!"

Natsu gave Viveka a puzzled look, as if the apprehension from his lover was something he didn't expect, and shrugged his shoulder back.
"Don't be so under-confident..." He said, soothingly. "It doesn't have to be just surrogacy, I mean, we could always adopt... Though I would like a little mini-me, if you know what I mean?"

Viveka's cheeks turned bright red as Natsu reacted, and promptly moved to lean his head against Natsu's forehead. Adoption, surrogacy, what had brought this topic on so suddenly?
"I... I just think we should wait." He chattered. "Are you sure we're ready to even consider adoption? It's not like I don't think it's a good idea, it's just that, well... You know what people think of couples like us, right?"

"Since when have you cared about what others thought of us?" Natsu gasped, jumping. Besides, we're a capable couple! I practically raised Ogbonna for half of his life, and we both know how crazy that boy is, so, we're in the clear!"
He puffed his cheeks out a little and sighed, almost offended by what Viveka had hinted at.
"Those who judge parenting by race are ignorant and horrible" He stated, folding his arms. "But if we never try, Veka, how will we ever know how well it could go? We could find a nice girl or an orphanage near here and talk it over and you might just find it was easy!"

"We could be setting ourselves up for heartbreak, Natsu, that's what!" Viveka retorted, pushing himself to his feet. "I just... I just..."
He turned himself away from Natsu and folded his arms. He had never felt so nervous around Natsu before, and the realization of that only made his heartbeat increase.
"...I just don't want to dream of something that is likely to hurt us, Natsu." He sighed, glancing back to his lover. "The last thing I want to do is get hopeful and then have it all fall to pieces..."

Natsu watched, stunned, as Viveka stood up and seemed to be running away from him. Of course, that was only his dramatic side acting up, but still, to see Viveka so nervous was upsetting. He pouted, wrapped the blanket around himself tightly, and stared out at the sea.
"I'm sorry I asked." He said, sighing.

The tone of Natsu's voice is what reached Viveka's ears first, in all it's wounded, sarcastic glory. Part of him wanted to spin around and be belligerent. How could he be angry with him for his opinion? How dare he think, for a minute, that he could suggest something so huge without getting a little backlash? How could he think that two men of mixed race could be parents? It was just as bad as a normal coup-
His eyes fell to the ground and slowly moved to linger upon Natsu's hair. ...Maybe he was placing a lot of negativity on their relationship. All couples were valid as long as they were adults and both had the consent of the other, and any children of a couple were valid as well, at least that was what his mother had always said. He gulped, bit his lip, and sat down where he stood.
"No, I'm sorry." He replied. "I guess I worry too much about how others will react. But, can't you see it from my perspective, even just a little? We'd need to be so careful just to make sure we don't get ourselves into trouble, and then if we are accepted to adopt, how would we explain..."
He stopped himself again, as Natsu had turned his gaze towards him. His eyes were filled with tears, something that terrified Viveka.
"N-Natsu, I, w-why are you crying?" He asked.

Natsu's eyes widened at the mentioning of his tears and he quickly buried himself back under the blanket.
"You just seem so doubtful of us!" He exclaimed. "It makes me think you don't see us as a valid couple, which I've always believed we are! I understand the racism, but I've never once doubted that we as a couple, could pull through that and be stronger as a result. It hurts me to think that you don't have faith in us!"

"But I do have faith in us, I love you!" Viveka shouted, lunging forward to wrap his arms around Natsu. "I'm just terrified of having our dreams shattered! It's not that I don't believe, or want, or don't want, I'm just scared!"
He took a deep breath and leaned against Natsu. He didn't want to hurt his lover, and he honestly thought that he never would. He clenched his teeth and held his breath.
"...Maybe." He said. "Maybe surrogacy. Adoption, only if we find something reliable, but I just... I don't want to take chances on something as huge as this."

Natsu leaned in as Viveka embraced him and nuzzled under his chin. He felt irrational that his feelings were so easily hurt by Viveka's words, because he could understand the fears that he had to some degree. However, easing those fears was an entirely different subject.
"...Would you object to me actively looking for a surrogate, and you approving them?" He asked. "I understand you're afraid, but I would love to pursue this as an option, at least for me at first. It's always been a dream of mine to have a large family like my dad's have. To be surrounded by family, warmth, and love. ...Wouldn't it be nice to have that?"
