The night was cold, but thankfully not as cold as the recent winter had been. Normally, Eternal Sailor Vespa would have enjoyed the coming of the spring season as it meant there'd be more insects to track down and observe, especially those that helped pollinate the beautiful flora that would soon spread throughout Destiny City. It would be great to see flowers and life after such a miserable winter, and Vespa was hoping that they would not suffer in the same way that the citizens of Destiny City would have...

In truth, he wasn't even sure why he had transformed and took to his patrols tonight. He was certainly in no mood to fight and honestly, he had lost any drive or desire to patrol for energy or starseeds. Especially starseeds. Never before did it seem so fitting that he was the Senshi of Wasps than now. He was praying on the lives of others and stealing what wasn't his to take, and was rewarded and praised for it. A wasp would do the same and held little thought or care to who or what it harmed. A wasp's role in the ecosystem was not as kind or as beneficial as a bee's, and that seemed tragically fitting, now that he thought about it.

He had hoped that his rank would help chase away others, as he sat alone in the park, away from the sidewalks and surrounded by clovers and flowers. There were some bees buzzing around but they posed little harm to him, and he tried to do the same. With any luck, he could just sit here and not be a bother to anyone. When one saw a wasp, they should just leave it well enough alone...

Kallichore had actually been looking for the Senshi of Wasps for quite some time, worried that perhaps she had chased him away when she didn't mean to. Being kind or warm or even compassionate were very difficult things for her to do and the eternal senshi had been kicking herself internally for this.

She wanted to know if was safe, and to make an offer to him.

She had heard Pasiphae and Valhalla in her mind after their initial meeting, how offering peace rather than pain would be so much more beneficial to someone, especially in Vespa's delicate position. And so she'd been searching every corrupted super signature she could find with no luck. Little did she know she was no longer looking for a super, but an eternal. Not wanting to give away her mission, any corrupted senshi she met were not questioned as to his whereabouts. If Kallichore roused suspicion, it would be all the worse for both of them.

Finally, she stopped for a rest in tall oak tree. She felt a corrupted eternal signature and was about to leave when she cast a glance in that direction, peering through the canopy of budding leaves to see a familiar burst of long blonde hair and compound visor. Not wanting to startle the young man, Kallichore dropped from a tree some thirty yards away and didn't bother to approach quietly. She knew her signature would give her away long before any noise she made would. The madness senshi called ahead, just in case.

"...Vespa? Is that you?"

It would figure that someone else would come along a disturb the peace, and when Vespa felt the ping of a strong and potent Order aura on his radar, he let out a long and shaky sigh. If it was basic or super ranked, he wouldn’t have paid it much mind and he would have hoped that the senshi would exercise more common sense than he once had and learn to steer clear of his stronger aura. But an Eternal? No, that was a fight waiting to happen, and yet, even when it drew closer and closer and was clearly heading towards him, Vespa felt little passion or desire to fight within him.

Maybe this one would be the one to remove this parasite from the Negaverse? That desire still lingered in his heart, even after his promotion… his forced promotion. The pain was still present in his chest when he tried to remember it, so he shut the memory down in his tracks and prepared himself for the intruder. A fight would likely ensue, and maybe now he had control of his energy wasps? He doubted it, but would it not be the perfect irony that it his recent upgrade in power gave him control when he desired none? Fate was a cruel mistress to Vespa, so he wouldn’t have held it past him.

Whoever it was had gotten close but remained out of sight, and the Wasp senshi remained perfectly still, letting the bees buzz by his head and paying them little mind. Maybe they had given up and left? One could hope, but the minute he offered hope the smallest hint of light, she dropped in from the oak tree above him and began her approach. He turned his head when she called his name, momentarily forgetting the bees that were nearby and how easily they could be provoked into an attack, and he managed to stop all movement, just as one of the bees came to rest on his compact visor.

“You know my name?” Vespa looked at her with befuddlement, but it lasted for only a second as he recalled their last encounter. Yes, she’d remember a senshi like that… “Oh, I guess I introduced myself… right. Yeah, it’s me, who else would it be?! Thought the yellow stripes and stupid goggles made me distinct from the rest. You here to fight?”

The White Moon senshi before him looked nothing but concerned, a bit pained. Kallichore wasn't interested in a fight.

"No. I'm not here to fight you, Vespa." In a gesture of peace, Kallichore lifted her hands as if showing she was unarmed. She knew it didn't make a bit of difference when it came to senshi magic but thought the gesture would be kind nonetheless. She stood in place, not moving an inch from the spot where Vespa had laid eyes on her. She noted the bat wings and the increased signature and, assuming he was still upset the way he was last time they met, chose not to mention it. "...I came to make a pledge to you, if you'd hear me out."

Kallichore watched and waited, trying to gauge how he would react based on this small bit of information.

Vespa looked at her gesture and found himself scoffing slightly at it, though not entirely in a hostile or demeaning way. “We’re senshi, we don’t need weapons to be dangerous… I’m sure you already know that, though.”

All Vespa needed was his hands, and he glanced down at them, knowing just how dangerous they could be when put to use. For the longest time, he had wanted to be useful, even if that meant hurting his enemies, and yet when he did succeed, he felt horrible. He felt like a monster. He curled his fists and let them drop to his side, making it clear that he would not be using them, even if she intended on going back on her word. Better a failure than a monster, right?

“Um… I know you’re not new to this whole thing, but you do know that you… shouldn’t be pledging anything to me, right? We’re enemies… the only thing you should be pledging to me is my demise,” Vespa said, throwing her a confused look but not engaging in a hostile tone or a fight. He really, really didn’t want to fight, and now, he was curious. He knew he shouldn’t have given her a chance to talk and that she would be expected to lash out with the same fury as the creatures of his sphere, but no one else was around. No one but Kallichore, himself, and the busy bees. “But I’m listening.”

Kallichore figured it would be best to cut to the chase, so to speak, without confusing the situation any further.

She walked toward him very slowly. "...are you serious about wanting to leave the Negaverse?" came the first question, the rest in rapid succession. "I want you to be honest with me - I don't want to end up backstabbed and betrayed at the last moment and end up wasting time entirely. I'm really not in the mood to waste my time."

When that was all well and established, Kallichore crossed her arms. "I'm not... very good at this, so I'm not going to fluff this up too much. But... if you really are willing to leave the Negaverse, I'd like to help you. I haven't met anyone who has left the Negaverse or even expressed the desire to. I know it can be done, and I know who can do it, but I can only assume how difficult it would be for you and your family. You said once that the higher-ups could threaten your friends and family if they wanted to." The last thing Kallichore wanted was for Vespa to purify and then immediately regret it because his family would then be in extreme danger. "I don't know everything that needs to be done, but I want to help where I can. If the Negaverse threatens you, I'll protect you. My Court may even be able to provide more protection..."

What did he think of all this?

He instinctively winced when she made her approach but he kept himself glued to his spot. Not because he didn’t want to show his fear, but because a honeybee had come to land on his shoulder and he didn’t wish to disturb it. Not only would the sting be painful, but then it would die, and all the nectar it had stored for the benefit of the hive would have been lost. So he stayed perfectly still, casting his gaze downward but still giving her his attention as she addressed him.

Her question made him uneasy, but not because it was an untrue accusation. He recalled their last encounter and remembered how he clearly confessed his fears and desires to her. He only had himself to blame for cracking under the pressure, and yet… as easily as he could have denied this, he didn’t. He wouldn’t lie to Kallichore, or anyone from the other side when asked. Not anymore. “I am. The Negaverse… terrifies me, more than anything else I could imagine. I mean, look at me… I’ve eaten a starseed, I’ve stolen energy from others, I’ve done… horrible things in the name of duty, and they’ve rewarded me for it. They’ve granted me the Eternal rank and now expect me to be the pinnacle of what they strive for, what they believe in… I’m an example of what others should be.”

He spat at the very notion, almost forgetting about the bee that rubbed its fuzzy antennae on his shoulders and stopping himself from being too active just in time. He shook his head at her words, smiling softly, despite being in the presence of the enemy. “It’s okay… I’m not good at anything, so I think they’ve made a huge mistake when they promoted me. Or maybe it’s part of their plan… fill me up with confidence and maybe that’d be enough to convince me I’m more than just a monster to command.

“That’s… that’s the thing, you know? If it was just me it’d effect, I’d do it in a heartbeat. This…” With his other hand, he motioned to himself. “This isn’t who I am. This doesn’t feel right. But it’s not just about me. General Mica knows my family, personally, and she made a point that if I were to ever try anything, they’d suffer for it. And I can’t… I can’t let anything happen to them, or to… her…”

He didn’t want to say who this ‘her’ was, and he wouldn’t answer her if she asked. Mica didn’t know about Penelope, and he was determined to keep it that way. Hearing of her offer to protect him and his family, though, did offer him some hope, and he allowed too much of that to get the better of him. “Do… do you really think so? I mean… I’d do anything to protect my family and the ones I love. Do… you really think you can protect me?”

This isn’t who I am. This doesn't feel right.

Kallichore closed her eyes and solemnly nodded. She thought there was a great deal of wisdom even in that short statement. Being self-aware enough to know when something isn't right, when the marching orders you're given don't match the look you see in your commanding officer's eyes. Being that the Negaverse operates like a military from what she could see, the lower ranks may not even have a choice in the matter. They may have their family and friends threatened if they don't carry out orders - exactly what Vespa was afraid of. And that bloodlust in the eyes of someone you knew... her own experience with Ares and the Blood Moon Court made her very familiar with it.

"Vespa, I think you are good at something." came a quiet response. Kallichore turned to her left and faced the endless rows of trees, as if asking what they saw in him too. "You're the first Negaverse agent, senshi or otherwise, I've ever met who questioned why things were. Everyone else just shrugs and keeps killing, or doesn't care, or doesn't want to think about it at all. The worst are the officers who gleefully spill blood and sever families and leave children orphans. The ability to look at oneself objectively..."

She turned back to him then. "...that is a real talent."

Folding her hands, the eternal looked off somewhere to Vespa's left, eyes somewhat unfocused as she thought aloud. "Admittedly, I don't know all of the mechanics behind purification. I know more about corruption - corruption seems easier, almost. Your memories become addled at best, erased completely at worse, and you go on as if nothing happened. I have no idea if this happens when one purifies. But I can find out." Brown eyes focused on him again, searching. "I have a Primer. I wrote it several years ago to try and guide new senshi, but it's in need of updating. I had planned to speak to the royals I know and get some questions answered for the Primer. But for you?" She made a fist with one hand and punched her open palm. "Two birds, one stone."

His next question was intelligent, important. "Can I protect you? Yes, I believe in my abilities. I stood up to Ares and came out alive. It's been three years since I awakened and I'm still powering up. That had to account for something. And besides..." Kallichore let her hands drop and opened them to look at her palms. "...you've never been hit with my attack. Believe me, I haven't met a Chaos officer who enjoyed it. I think I gave Benitoite nightmares. I am the Senshi of Madness, you know."

The Wasp senshi ducked his head at her words, wanting to think that she was being sincere with him and not just telling him what he'd like to hear. That he was worth something more than just fodder for the generals and General-Kings, that he wasn't just their dog, or monster, to answer their demands for blood. It was a nice thing for her to say that he was good at something and he couldn't help but scoff at it, shaking his head but with caution thanks to the bee. "Maybe... but that's not a good thing with the Negaverse. I'm not suppose to question things- I'm just suppose to do them. And be capable. To the Negaverse, I'm a... successful failure, I guess?"

To the Negaverse, anyway. But such words, such thoughts... weren't they treasonous? He hoped that Mica nor anyone else were around to hear this. Not only would he and his family be in danger, but who knew what they'd do to Kallichore... she turned around, just in time to see his flushed expression, and he immediately cast his gaze downwards, letting her continue to talk and fill his head with ideas and hope. The idea of losing his memories... honestly scared him, and he wasn't afraid to admit it, either. "Maybe it's worth it... forgetting all of the terrible things I've done or terrible things I know the rest of them are capable of. But..."

Something about that seemed wrong, and selfish. Forgetting about the Negaverse and all of the overwhelming darkness that threatened to consume good people... it just seemed wrong. Just because he'd forget, what about his family? Would they forget him? What of the threat on his loved ones? Would the Negaverse forget, or would they seek revenge afterwards, when he could not even remember why? It was terrifying to think about...

"I'd like to help with your primer someday... even if this all ends horribly, I guess I could be used as an example of what not to do? It's something..." He meant every word. If he was killed, or his family was killed, he wanted others to know exactly what they were getting themselves into when they made their choice. Good, and the bad. When he had asked if she could protect him, it was more or less meant to detract her from this notion and imply that he was a lost cause, and yet the response he got... genuinely surprised him. She stood against Ares? She did seem strong... perhaps she could help him. Perhaps... "Well, you're definitely mad if you think you can still help me, but if you can, then I won't say no. I'm not sure how much use I'd be, but I guess it's better to be useless than a mindless monster, right? Which would you prefer?"

"If there's ever a time to be a successful failure, I'd say this is it." she replied with a shrug. "They only want mindless serial killers as far as I can tell - be they someone who takes orders or gives the order to kill."

Pinching the bridge of her nose, Kallichore started to create a mental to-do list, filling it with people she needed to talk to and what answers she'd seek, what favors she may have to call in. "Vespa... what is their goal? Did they tell you? Why do they keep pulling starseeds and bringing youma to the city? The youma don't seem to react to Chaos agents... do they react to you? Why do they drain energy? I..." She stopped herself, tapping her fingers against her mouth. "...I'm sorry. I went into Primer mode. I just think... if you do end up losing some of your memories, it might be best to tell us what you know beforehand. I don't know what might happen. You may not forget anything at all. I simply don't know. I'm sorry."

She wished she could give more information than that, but she had precious little experience with it. "What matters now is that you know what's going on is wrong. I don't know what story they told you to get you to join, or if you even joined willingly. But... you wouldn't be a sacrifice. You'd be a guide - a teacher. An example. If there are others like you, questioning their place, perhaps they're too frightened to come forward. Perhaps they don't have your bravery to even talk about it, let alone talk about it with one of your 'enemies'." Kallichore turned away for a moment, taking small, slow, deliberate steps in no particular direction. "I'm sure they told you we're evil, or we want to enslave the world under a dead queen or some such nonsense. Or have they moved on from that?"

... it's better to be useless than a mindless monster, right? Which would you prefer?

"I'd prefer you didn't speak about yourself like that, Vespa." came the curt reply. Kallichore looked over her shoulder at him, brows furrowed in concern. "No White Moon Senshi is useless. We may not all have the same powers but... we all have our talents."

Vespa found himself bobbing his head up and down with agreement at her statement, despite the borderline treason he was committing with the act. The fact that he was talking to her instead of fighting her was problematic enough, and he fought down the urge to ring his gloved hands together as he added, "Yeah... maybe not all of them are quick to kill, but those that are... they honestly feel it's their right. I watched a general skewer a senshi- she couldn't have been more than fourteen, maybe even younger? There wasn't a smile, or glee or any kind of emotion on her face... to her, it was just business. And that scares me, just as much as those that find pleasure in all of this."

By this time, the bee had finally had its fill of preening and took off, though Vespa never noticed it took flight. Now, all of his attention was set to the Eternal before him and her barrage of questions, and as fearful as he was of anyone overhearing them, he tried to answer as best as he could. There wasn't much that he knew, or thought he knew, but he simply could not stay silent. "I was told that our goal was to free Earth from the tyrannical Moon Queen and her minions... starting with Destiny City. Maybe others really believe that, and maybe they're right... but from what I'm told from others, the Moon Queen is gone, and thus far I haven't seen anyone on your side that even cares, or wants her back. Pulling starseeds and bringing youma in? I'm... not sure why. They never told me, and I never asked. They don't really react well to me. I was told very early on that I wasn't allowed into the Rift on my own and that they didn't take kindly to senshi, even those of the Negaverse. I never had one attack me, but... I never really worked along side one, I don't think."

There was that blue, winged youma at the convention, but just because they were in the same room as one another did not necessarily mean that they were fighting alongside one another. He tried not to think of that event, and thankfully Kallichore was offering him a good distraction, especially given the warning she offered about the possibility of losing his memory. It was... frightening to think about, but it wasn't her fault. "No, no, I understand, just... maybe it's best I forget. I can barely sleep at night as it is, and I'm not sure how much longer I can hide this from my family, you know? Maybe it's best not knowing... but then everyone's that suffered at my hands, or died because of... it'd be in vain if I forgot, right? I don't know."

And that made him mad. Not at Kallichore, nor even at the Negaverse, but at himself. What had he gotten himself into? Why did he ever run into that damned cat? Kallichore was trying her best, but pulling Vespa out of his hole was just something that was not easily done. But still, he held no anger towards her. "I joined willingly because I thought I was honestly helping, but that's all a lie. Of course it was a lie... and I was an idiot and fell for it. There may have been one, maybe two of your kind that have honestly tried to kill me, but I don't blame them. I mean, look at me? I'm an abomination and knowing what the Negaverse is capable of, they honestly thought they were doing the right thing, so I don't blame them."

She asked him not to speak like that, but Vespa knew he could not oblige. He had no strength, no courage, no idea of his self worth, and there was no one that could convince him but himself. "Maybe that's how it is for the White Moon, but not the Negaverse. Sure, we're assets, but... little else beyond that. And the price to reach beyond that is far... far too high."

He could never forget Alkaid, her story, her struggle, her sacrifice. He could never be on Alkaid's level, even if he tried... and he truly didn't want to.

"I've pushed you too much and for that, I apologize."

It was Kallichore's turn to wring her hands, chewing on her lower lip as she realized she probably overstepped some boundaries and asked too much of Vespa too soon. He was in a very precarious and dangerous position and pushing too much in either direction could lead to very dire consequences. "Regardless of what happens or what you think of yourself, what you're doing is very brave, and no one can take that away from you. But what they can take away...." Kallichore gently pointed to Vespa's chest, the great and cavernous hole that the Negaverse had punched through his body to corrupt his soul. "...are those. I know most of the royalty on our side. I'm not best friends with them by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm aware of what they're capable of. They can heal your wounds, Vespa, and deliver you from darkness."

She stayed silent for a while, thinking. The wind blew gently, caressing their hair and she looked up. "I'll be sure to make something happen for you, one way or another." Kallichore nodded firmly, both to herself and to him. "But first thing's first - I'll speak to my Court. I have other things I need to bring up as well. I'll petition them if I have to, to offer you some protection. While we can't travel into the Negaverse with you, we can keep you safe out here. And from there..." She trailed off, tapping her chin absently as she began to pace, planning.

"We'll keep this as secret as possible. I don't want the Negaverse finding out about this at the last moment and..." Kallichore didn't finished. She trusted Vespa would know exactly what she meant. "...but you're not an abomination. You can't blame yourself for doing what you thought was right. If it makes you feel any better, I would have done the same thing were I in your position."

There was something about Kallichore apologizing to him that made the Wasp senshi feel good. Not in that smug 'haha I'm right' way, but it was sincere and kind, as though she had realized just how strong she was coming on and how it effected him. It was that consideration, more so than the apology itself, that put him at ease, and he flashed her a small smile. "It's alright... you got excited. I get that. I just wish I could help more... because I was a senshi, I don't think they trusted me with much information, much less the truth."

He glanced down at the hole she pointed at and immediately looked away to hide his blush, and he wanted to believe her words and the promises she offered. He did. He truly did. Even when he felt afraid of failure, even when there was doubt in his mind, heart and soul. She truly thought he could be saved, as did Pasiphae, Denobola, Thraen... but could he believe it?

He really wanted to. "I'd... like that a lot, actually. I'm not sure if I'm worth it, but maybe I am compared to others. I want to help, but I don't want to hurt others, especially those that can't defend themselves."

She said she'd talk to her court, and her reasoning for keeping this a secret from them was definitely sound. Oh, if Mica were to find out about this... he shuddered involuntarily at the thought of it and looked around them in such a frantic motion that he swore he gave himself whiplash. No one was there, but one could never be sure! "T-trust me, you don't need to finish that statement- I know exactly what's in store for me if I'm caught. If it was just me, I wouldn't care, but then they'll hurt my family and those I care about, and that's... that's enough for me to know I can't be caught."

He wanted to believe her on that last part, but it was hard. He shook his head, before speaking up. "That's the thing, though. I knew it was wrong. He gave me the order, I knew it was wrong... and I obeyed. Maybe you're right... maybe that doesn't make me an abomination, but it doesn't make me a good person either. I'm not pure... not like you, or her..."

Kallichore shook her head. "Don't worry about it - whatever information you can provide is extremely helpful."

I'm not pure... not like you, or her...

The eternal senshi could understand his line of thinking - that obeying an order despite one's own reservations made one an evil thing. But that wasn't how Kallichore saw it. "You were doing what you were told to do, Vespa. We're told that we're soldier. White Moon Senshi just don't have anyone to report to. I don't think anyone could blame you for following orders. I mean, how often are we presented one, with magical powers and two, some terrifying commanding officer? Who wouldn't follow orders if they were in your shoes? And what's more, there's a reason you're afraid of the Negaverse - we all are. What matters most is that you recognize their evil and you're doing what you can to get out."

She walked slowly to him, feeling the soft ground give way beneath her feet. "Vespa, for what it's worth, we've all made our mistakes. None of us are entirely pure or righteous or just or fair. But we do the best we can." Her voice was slow, even. She imagined she was speaking to her younger brother, trying to help him hold his head high all while offering a shoulder to lean on. Kallichore didn't know how well she could do in that department, but she gave it her best shot. "The best I can do is offer you protection for now, and I'll speak to my Court on your behalf. Until you're ready to be rid of the Negaverse and we can arrange for a royal to see you, keep your head down. Follow orders, try not to let on that anything is amiss, okay?"

She backed up then, crossing her arms across her chest and breathing out a heavy sigh. "...we'll get you through this. That's my goal."

It was such a strange feeling, that strange sense of fulfillment that came with being useful, and how tragic it was that he only felt this way when talking with the enemy. He caught himself and shook his head, knowing that she could not read his thoughts and would not understand that smile he suddenly wore. Not enemy. The White Moon Court could not be his enemy…

He listened to everything she had to say with a feeling that was foreign to him, and that feeling was of hope. She filled him with hope and while he knew it would have been a temporary feeling at most and it wouldn’t be long before he was forced into a situation that would take said hope out back and shoot it square-blank in the head. But hope was there… and he’d relish in it, no matter how short lived it was destined to be. “The Negaverse is evil, or at least the Chaos that fuels them is. I’m… I’m sure there are good within the ranks, but maybe they can be saved too. If this works out, then we can focus on the others. I don’t know if I’d live with myself if I’d abandon them…”

It may not have been for the best to think so far in advance, but Vespa couldn’t help himself. He seldom tasted hope and never knew when he’d feel it again so he wanted to lap it up as much and as quickly as possible before the bowl was empty. None of this distracted him from Kallichore’s concern, and he flashed her a lopsided smile, accented by his mustache and likely adding to his attempt at humor. “Don’t worry, I will. Even though I’m Eternal, I don’t really get much attention or respect out of too many others. If I can just keep this a secret from Mica, then I should be alright. But if she finds out, then… well… I guess I’ll just have to come looking for you sooner, right? Or just stand my ground. Though, I’d rather take my chances on her never finding out…”

It sounded like a plan, one that Vespa felt was well within his realm of possibilities. He just hoped that the orders he’d follow wouldn’t further tarnish his conscious… he had a feeling that there’d have to be some left over for when he approached the royals.
