00.2 The Beginning

xx♥Swimming、Kanika's preferred past time, and one the best ways she's found to clear her mind. It's a pity that her job keeps her from travelling to the sea as often as she would want. Floating about in water is cool, too.
xx♥Free running、and parkour, is Kani's preferred method to travel. Why go around obstacles when she could jump over or dive under them? Why take to the streets at all when the rooftops are just as easily accessible and generally clear of traffic? It keeps Kani in shape, keeps her mind clear, and makes it easy to deliver packages. It's almost like flying, which is a plus.
xx♥Sparring、Just because she doesn't like to fight doesn't mean she doesn't appreciate a good spar. Plus, it hones the skills she needs to help protect her precious people.
xx♥Seafood、Kani's a fan of food in general, but she absolutely loves to eat fish and crabs and anything else. Pity they're so freaking rare, but she keeps her ears to the ground in hopes of finding out if any of the sellers of the Black Market gets their hands on such a hot commodity.
Dislikes
xx✖Dark Tokyo、Gang warfare sucks. Living as the dredges of society sucks. Fighting for her next meal, or her friend's health really sucks. But most of all, she misses the birds.
xx✖Silence、Absolute silence terrifies Kani. Growing up on the streets meant even at the most quiet, there were still people talking or yelling. In Kanika's mind, a lack of sound means danger, and should be avoided at all times.
xx✖Messy rooms、Kanika is an obsessive cleaner, especially in her home since the lights are almost always out and having something in the wrong place has the potential to be catastrophic.
xx✖Fighting、Kanika is of the opinion that the best fight is the one that doesn't need to be fought. But that doesn't mean that she has qualms about laying the smack down if needed. She would just prefer to not be where the conflict is at all, thanks.
Personality
xxPragmatic、Kanika is thrifty and has no qualms about chewing out someone who wastes anything. She's practical and reliable like that.
xxMoody、As amiable as she makes herself be, Kanika can work herself into a sulk at a drop of a hat. Rarely does she rage, however, unless someone she cares about has been hurt. In which case, the best advice is to run. Very, very, far away.
xxNosy、Even a desolate area like Dark Tokyo has paparazzi, and Kani is the best. It helps that the number of usable cameras are rather low. She has a habit of finding places she shouldn't be and seeing things she shouldn't see. Kanika prefers to be called curious. About everything.
xxProtective、If you're Kanika's nakama, she would move the heavens to help you out. Or kill the SOB who made fun of you. With potential blackmail for added effect.
History
xxKanika's parents died when she was rather young, so she remembers very little of them. It's mostly vague impressions - the smell of sweat and alcohol from the bar, the sound of pages being turned, and slim fingers tracing the fragile drawings of avians. This left her upbringing to her older brother Kanimaro and anyone who was willing to help.
xxThe Southside Boxers work out of District F and are one of 9 groups that make up of the larger South Gang. Their main job is to run items and messages from one part of the city to another, from drugs and other contraband, to meeting times and locations. Kanika is well known as an accurate message runner and has even earned the nickname "The Southern Wind Who Bears the News". She's also garnered a separate, but more terrifying moniker as "The Southern Wind That Smells of Blood" from a rather ill-timed fight between the Boxers and some members of the East Gang.
xxShe lives in an apartment above Ruri, a bar that Kanimaro runs. Literacy isn't something that those living in the slums of District F need, but Kani has learned a little bit of kanji, and can read katakana well, but most of the time, she just memorizes what things look like. She does, however, know romanji really well, mostly because she learned how to read out of a foreign bird watching book. Recently, Kanika has been having odd dreams, that she finds both disturbing and wonderful at the same time. Rid the world of darkness? Yeah, she wishes that it would be that simple.

xxHae、A katana that has been Kanika's faithful companion for years and years. (南風)
xxTegmine、Sailor Cancer wields a shield which normally takes the form of a black pearly bracer on her left arm. Despite it's appearance, it is more durable and sturdier than pearl, able to parry most mundane attacks with ease. It can change it's size, sometimes appearing as more of a buckler, and can fully extend into a shield one meter in diameter. When fully formed, Tegmine's shape is similar to that of a crab shell. (水位 -- read as テグミネ)
Character Skill Set
xxxxEidetic Memory、For some reason, it's hard for Kanika to forget things she had once seen, which makes her a rather effective message runner. It also means she's got a good memory for directions.
xxxxEndurance & Stamina、because of her free running and parkour, Kanika is in top physical condition. Her lungs are fine, her steps are swift, and balance... Well, any clumsiness she might have had was trained out of her early on.
xxxxSwordsmanship、Certainly no samurai of old (or even a practitioner of iaido), but Kanika is pretty handy with her katana.
Transformation
xxxx"Cancer Zodiac Power" Kanika holds up her henshin item, a small pearl that she's attached to a piece of string to make a necklace. The Cancer symbol flashes within it's iridescent surface. "MAKE UP!" She is engulfed in a flash of lavender light, glowing a faint emerald. Bubbles obscure her form and, once they dissipate, Sailor Cancer takes the scene, armed with Tegmine and, if she had her katana on her when she transformed, also Hae.

Sailor Attacks
xxxxPraesepe's Shroud、Sailor Cancer holds a fully extended Tegmine in front of her. With a shout, shadows erupts from beneath its pearly surface, engulfing the battlefield. Eyes are useless and it would take the other senses to navigate. The only ones who can see in the gloom is cancwr herself and anyone who is touching Tegmine it self when she starts the attack. The darkness lets up within five minutes after being summoned or if Cancer gets too far away from it. It's a smokescreen to let her and her allies to escape.
xxxxCancer Perfect Shell、Sailor Cancer raises her arms above her head. "Cancer," her right arm strokes Tegmine. "Perfect Shell!" She slams her hands against the ground in front of her. A pearly barrier emerges around her, creating a protective dome three meters in diameter around her. It lasts very little time, about 45 seconds top, but it protects those within from most normal attacks abs sine mystical, and those it can not protect from, it absorbs and dulls. It takes a lot of energy and drains Cancer rather quickly, making it impossible to use her powers for nearly two hours afterwards making this attack a last measure.
xxxxCancer Shadow Bubble、Cancer gathers shadows within the palm of her hand. After a moment, she blows at the energy, which disperse in dark bubbles. The attack does little to harm enemies, but can entangle and immobilize them.

00.5 The Miscellaneous
Character Name
xxKani's name is written "遖蟹花", which is composed of the kanji for "appare" (brilliant, bravo), "kani" (crab), and "hana" (flower).
xxI really adore the kanji 遖, so finding out that it is a legitimate family name made me very happy. Her given name was certainly harder. I wanted an elegant sounding female name that used one of the kanji for crab. Unfortunately, most names that used the character were male. So I compromised and found a name that included the sound "kani" in it and tacked on a kanji with the reading of "ka", as Kanika is a Japanese name, but written differently.
xxIn the end it reads somewhat like "brilliant flower crab". Her brother, Kanimaro, is written 蟹町. The second kanji is "machi" for town. Before I used the kanji "natsu" (summer) for the 'ka' sound, but I changed it to flower, since flower crabs are a thing.
Cancer's Abilities
xxI... am probably going to get a lot of flak for this but instead of having Sailor Cancer focus on 'water', which would probably be the most obvious choice, I made her go in the different direction. Maybe I was inspired by SMMT's Cancer who controlled the winds, but going non-traditional sounded like fun. Plus, I always thought Aquarius and Pisces was more water-y signs (even though Aquarius is an Air sign). Anyways, doing a bit of research showed me that Cancer was often associated with darkness -- mostly because it lacked bright stars. Also, in Coptic Egyptian, Cancer was written as Κλαρια (Klaria), the Bestia seu Statio Typhonis or "the Power of Darkness"! It even had associations with Anubis, the god of the dead, mummification, and keeper of the scales.
Southside Boxers
xxThis was rather fun! In Japanese, the name of the gang would be 南面ボクサー (nanmen bokusaa). 南面 means "southside" but it could also mean "ruling" or "ascending the throne". I thought it was a cool word so I went with it. Like I said before, I'm obsessed with the kanji appare, so all the Southside Boxers have "南" (South) in their names somewhere. Or within a kanji in their names.

xxKanika's two monikers are written as 「特報の南風」＆「血臭の南風」respectively.
