3DS or 3DS XL? Does it make any difference?

3DS XL because it's bigger and nicer to see what you're doing.

I can vouch for this; The large screen is a nice perk.

The difference in price for the 3DS and the 3DS XL is minimal, so much so, I'd recommend just spending the extra cash and getting the large screen.

If the price is a concern, perhaps just opt for the 3rd option and buy the 2DS? More often than not, personally, I play with the 3D function off all the time anyways.

A 2DS is the same price as a 3DS. I personally don't like the 3D, but I chose the 3DS because at least it closed so that the screen is protected.

It may be a little late to toss input here, but I have to go with the 3DS XL. Having owned both of them, the XL is greatly improved in many areas. The larger screen looks great, even when playing DS games. After playing with the larger screen for awhile, I went on my friend's 3DS to suggest what armor decorations he should use in Monster Hunter, and holy crap I could see the difference.

Second, the outside has a matte finish instead of a glossy finish, so it won't pick up finger prints nearly as much and is easier to clean. My 3DS ended up getting marred and foggy, even with a higher-than-average level of care. The inside is a lot different, too; With the 3DS, the glass/plastic stuff they use for the screen covering is across the entire top half, not just where the screen is, and that will attract finger prints like no other substance I've seen, and because of the raised edges are very difficult to completely clean, but that problem isn't present in the XL. There is no bumper in the screen on the 3DS to keep the screen from touching the raised edges around the touch screen, so it will develop lines in the screen that will never fully go away; the same thing will happen with the analog stick, leaving an unsightly circle mark on your screen. I know I'm listing a lot of OCD appearance/cleaning issues, but I have a slight problem with marks and fingerprints on my screen.

If you use the 3D feature, the 3DS has to be exactly 10 inches away from your face; the XL has to be (iirc) 12-14 inches away, giving a bit more of a range, and a little farther. The slider also clicks into the off position on the XL, whereas on the 3DS it does not, leaving it to suddenly turn on the 3D if the slider is so much as nudged, which can be annoying.

The one thing that the 3DS has over the XL is that the speakers are marginally better on the original.

Oh, and the XL has a slightly longer battery life.

For me. I looked at the 3ds and the xl very carefully. and after much deliberation I ended up with a 2ds and couldn't be happier. the graphics are actually superior to what I've seen on any hand held. and the fact that it doesn't close means no breaking hinges. honestly it feels like holding an original Game Boy (and now you guys know I'm old). I love it and am so happy with that purchase.
