Wilting Rose

This scene takes place after the hunting down of Edea in Galbadia Garden. It is of note that this section contains spoilers and those who are not interested in them, would do best to look away.

Upon arriving, Kiyari, Caize, Kalay, and Lisanna split up together, leaving the other squads to take another direction. Oddly, at some point Kiyari disappeared and the group was forced to press on without her. After traversing the hallways, searching for a way to unlock access to where Edea was located, the group stumbled upon Kiyari again. Though this time, the situation was not the same as it was before she disappeared.

"Take another path. This path is blocked. I'll meet you guy's on the other side."

Caize had provided no explanation to either Lisanna or Kalay as he'd said this moments before, separating from the two. They had to know something was up, and the look in Kalay's eyes had told him all he needed to know. Kalay knew as well. So, Kalay was not as careless as he let on, Caize noted. It had been so long since Caize had been in the presence of the man, that realizing that Kalay hadn't lost that edge he'd had as a trainee was interesting. It reminded Caize of when they had all worked together to pass their SeeD exam. A smile crossed his expression as he made his way forward, pushing open the doors to the large open hall. Just as he expected. Caize walked into the room, letting the door close behind him. Silently he came to a stop and put his hand on his hip.

"Kiyari."

Caize leveled his gaze with Kiyari, the only figure in the hall. "Care to explain?" He asked. It was the only question he really had for her. His expression devoid of emotion, his eyes watching her. He had already calculated the distance between himself and her, which was nearly 20 yards. It was enough distance that he knew he'd have time to react if she was hostile. He already knew the answer to that though.

Kiyari watched the man approach with an expression utterly devoid of emotion, her blood red eyes blank as if shutters had closed in them. She stood at the far end of the hall from where he'd entered, her body straight and still as a statue. In her right hand she held her katana with a firm grip, the tip pointing towards the floor. The only thing that seemed to change when he arrived was that she tensed up a little, almost as if she had been waiting for him. Hearing him speak her name caused her head to tilt slightly."Caize." She replied in an even tone, her eyes narrowing only a tiny fraction. Her gaze flicked to the door and then quickly back to him. He hadn't brought the others with him. That was good. His was the only life she would take today. And because he was the closest thing she could call to a friend, she would try to make it as quick and painless as possible. For both their sakes.

"Explain?" She repeated softly, with the familiar subtle lilt of her eastern accent. "You're the one who usually has all the answers, are you not? But very well, I shall explain..." She strongly suspected he knew why they were both here anyway. Caize always knew more than he cared to let on. "...if you can beat me." She finished, raising her chin a little and regarding him with her carefully impassive expression. If he had any response to that, it was quickly cut off as the young woman spoke again. "Which you won't." A defiant glint in her eyes told Caize that she was telling the truth, at least as far as she believed it. He really didn't stand a chance of winning. She couldn't let him off like she had with Kalay. Not this time. There was too much at stake for her. 'Do not fret, I shall explain to you in the afterlife. You won't have to wait long.' She thought, keeping this particular nugget of information to herself and still watching him quietly. There was a small ache of nostalgia in her heart at the fact that their long acquaintance as friends and SeeD's, however unconventional, had started in a bloody battle on the same side, and now it was to end on different sides. 'Live by the sword, die by the sword.' Kiyari told herself, though she wished otherwise at this point. She would have liked to have seen how far their friendship could go. He likely would have recognised the dramatic difference in her now after the past several weeks they'd spent together. She'd been more relaxed and open with him than ever before and now suddenly she'd totally closed off on him again.

"Haste." Kiyari gave her opponent no other warning as she suddenly took off, darting towards him like a viper going in for the kill, her speed doubled by the spell she had cast on herself. Despite this she knew he was far enough away that he could easily prepare to meet any attack she offered. She rapidly closed in on him and swung her katana in a swift downwards strike at his chest anyway, which he was surely avoid or block. At exactly the last moment before her blade was to meet him she gave a discreet flick of her wrist in his general direction. "Thundara!" Lightning bounced off her blade, exploding towards Caize at close range.

Caize wasn't surprised with her response, telling him he usually had all the answers. She wasn't wrong. Caize had a way of getting his hands on information that he wasn't authorized for. And yet, he didn't have all the answers. He could only speculate what would cause her to face him like this. He knew though, that there were very few things that could have turned her so quickly on them, on him. Silently he adjusted the belt that went across his chest, attached to the longer sword on his back. Kiyari had never seen the blade, and he almost wondered if she would see it now. It was not his intention to draw it unless he had to.

'...if you can beat me.'

She seemed ready at that, offering a final test of words as Caize held his left hand out to the side. "Regen." He stated calmly, flicking his hand at himself and feeling the cool green light fall around him. So she was stuck on this path. Part of him wondered if he could dissuade her, or that perhaps Kalay and Lisanna would solve the problem and he wouldn't be forced to fight Kiyari to the death. The latter of which had a low probability. The prior was also low, so really the entire situation ending well was just not looking that way to Caize.

And then she came. Unfinished Battle

Caize's right hand dropped onto the sword's sheath at his waist, Caize positioning himself slightly sideways. He knew Kiyari's fighting style like he knew his own, much as how she would be very familiar with his. It was a concern, but not enough that he was worried about it. She was on him in only a moment, Caize unclasping the sword's sheath form his belt without warning as he moved, Deflecting her blade with the sheath, the sword still in the sheath. He didn't even pause as he shifted, Kiyari's lightning moving in his direction, bouncing off her blade. There was the crash of thunder as Caize brought the sword and sheath mix up, and then snapped the blade sideways, the sheath, having soaked up most of the thunder, sent flying across the room as he brought in the blades point at Kiyari's side with a thrust.

Kiyari would no doubt have seen it though, the electricity spark across Caize's arm. She had hit him, but he showed no sign of it as he moved specifically to be on her weak side, her left. In theory, they were both right handed and this would provide no advantage, but the way he had stepped, putting his right side to Kiyari, meant he had the leverage he needed while she would have to swing in at him.

"Hope you're ready, I'm not taking it easy on you."

She expected without a doubt that this would be the hardest fight of her life, for a number of reasons. One of which being that Caize was infernally difficult to kill. He seemed to have a way of surviving no matter what was thrown at him. In the past when they were allies this was fairly helpful, but now it became a problem. A big problem. As such, Kiyari knew that her first attack was likely to do little more than at least let him know she was serious, which hopefully it had. The sooner he realised that she really truly meant to end his life, if he hadn't already, the sooner he would also fight her back seriously. She didn't want his feelings for her to stop him from giving it all he had.

As expected he blocked her swing, interestingly enough without actually drawing his sword and instead using the sheath, skillfully side stepping. Kiyari felt her blade connect, striking down with great force which the sheath seemed to bear before she fired off her thundara. She felt the sheath give as it was flung away from the strength of her magic and immediately knew what must follow, realising what her opponent had done. True enough, Caize had used the opportunity to draw his sword and thrust at her exposed side. It was a smart move, and well executed. She had seen the electricity spark across his arm and knew at least part of her attack had hit, and for a very brief moment admired the fact that he hadn't reacted to it. It wasn't easy to just brush off a spell of that level, particularly when it was fired at close range and you had minimal time to respond.

Unfortunately with him now on her weaker side there was no time for her to attack again, she could only defend. With the fluidity of a dancer Kiyari spun sideways in a twirling motion, quickly bringing her blade around to parry Caize's strike whilst stepping away to put a small amount of distance between them, her long red hair whipping around her shoulders. With the momentum of her spin she tried to deflect his blade and throw it off before skipping back several steps. His final comment caused the corners of her lips to twitch ever so slightly in either approval or amusement as she stopped several feet away, flicking her blade out to the side. The young woman did not waste a second, however, and immediately flung her free hand out, splaying her fingers. "Poison!" A hissing miasma of foul gas bubbled into life around Caize, threatening to envelop him. She figured the determination in her eyes and the way she refused to pause even for a moment, instead relentlessly throwing attacks at him, should be enough to convince Caize that she was more than ready for this fight. Even so, she thought she might reply anyway, her tone sharp. "Same to you! Show me just what you can do with that fancy sword of yours!"

Caizes Theme: Unfinished Battle

She'd made her first mistake. He imagined she'd realize it as soon as she finished her backwards spin. She deflected his blade sideways, but with the skill of someone whom had used a sword for years, Caize adjusted his grip. Several feet was almost no distance in terms how easy it was for him to follow her, and even as she threw her spell up to hit him, she would have realized her mistake. He was already there. She was faster, that much was for sure, but because of her need to spin to get her blade into a position to deflect his first attack, she'd slowed her movement down. He could never hope to beat Kiyari in speed, but if he could keep her off balance, that would make all the difference. And that meant staying inside her range so she wouldn't have time to make use of her speed. A wide inward swing. It was a weaker swing given how he had swung, but it would do the trick. What she probably wasn't expect was the follow through.

"Burn. Fire!" He was already nearly on her, his blade cutting in as he flicked his free left hand at her. Behind her, the easiest way to escape such a wide swing, burst into flames suddenly meaning if she chose to back up, she'd be backing up right into the spell. Further more, something odd happened with his blade as he swung. It caught fire just as his sword was about to hit her, and regardless of her blocking or dodging, the flames disappeared as quickly as they had appeared.

Cold surprise. That was what Kiyari felt when she made to fling out her spell only to find Caize had quickly closed the distance. "You-!" The feeling showed briefly on her face, her red eyes widening slightly, before she snapped back to attention knowing that she had to quickly act to fend him off. No time to avoid. As he swung in at her she planted her feet firmly and raised her sword to block, feeling the impact jar through her as his blade slammed into hers.

Just before the impact there was another moment of cold surprise for Kiyari at seeing Caize's blade briefly catch fire and go out. 'What the heck was that?' She immediately thought, confused and alarmed by the odd occurrence. Did it have something to do with him casting the fire spell a moment ago? Except that the fire was behind her, stopping her from backing off. She could feel the heat of it on her skin and hear the crackling of the flames. Her suspicious gaze flicked from the sword to meet Caize's eyes. "What accursed blade is this that you carry?" She questioned him, a hint of anger in her soft tone. She had a bad feeling about that sword.

Gritting her teeth Kiyari held her ground, her body shaking with the effort of pushing against Caize's sword with her own. She was strong for a woman of her size, but he was stronger. Her gaze met his defiantly. "I always wondered...if it would...come to this..." She panted. The metal of her blade screeched slightly in protest to his as she pushed against him, holding him off. "Should have known...from that day...the exam..." Feeling herself sliding, she planted her feet in more firmly, gripping the sword tighter.

"Should have known...we'd been dealt...a bad hand..." Would he understand what she was talking about? Kiyari didn't seem to care whether he did or not as at that point she shifted her weight suddenly, slipping sideways only slightly in the hopes of causing Caize to lose his balance, whilst at the same time deflecting his strange sword past her. With a fierce cry she completed the action by turning and snapping out her leg in a swift, powerful kick towards his ribs. The idea being that the momentum of him losing his balance combined with her kick would send him sprawling forwards towards the fire he had cast.

{{Ooc:// Caizes Theme: Unfinished Battle}}

Caize wasn't giving her a moment to even breath if he could help it, but her surprise was amusing to him. A smirk crossed his face as he stared at Kiyari, their blades locked. "This is just a normal sword." He responded cooly. There was something odd about this answer though. He certainly wasn't lying, that much was evident from how seriously he stated it. But that didn't explain why the sword had caught fire. Caize nearly laughed as Kiyari said she knew they'd been dealt a bad hand. "All three of us, actually." Caize returned. She had to know who the third person was. Ironically... "Though he made it out just fine, so I guess it's just us who got stuck." That was his response to her. This was followed by her trying to knock him off balance.

She shifted her weight, and instantly Caize responded. She moved to the side to send him off balance, but instead of him losing balance like she expected, his entire grip shifted on his sword as he planted his foot. His sword slipped to the side, as she hoped, but that was were he took an action she probably never would have expected, at least not from Caize. He tackled her. As she went to snap her leg into his rips, he didn't bother worrying about it as he lunged, throwing all of his weight against her while she was moving to kick him. There was a downside to this take down plan though. He had no idea what this was going to entail. Luckily the fire form his spell dispersed while he was doing this. Even if he took her down, there was the problem of stopping her from impaling him with her sword. Which would probably be at the top of her priority list, understandably.

So, it went without saying that, assuming his tackle was a success and didn't get him in a bad position, he was going to grab her sword arm and pin it to the ground. If possible, and assuming she hadn't managed to rip his sword from his right hand, it's follow up would be with the point resting just above her heart.

Kiyari was reluctant to believe Caize's comment that his sword was normal but she realised that he was probably telling the truth. He just wasn't telling all of it, which was typical of him, and therefore suitably annoying. It just made her even more curious about how he'd set fire to it like that. As for his next comments, she knew exactly who he meant by the third person. She tended not to think of Kalay that much, given how very little she'd seen of him in the past few years. She wasn't sure that she agreed with Caize about him making it out alright though. From what she knew of his activities his life was just as risky and precarious as theirs in terms of how easily it could all come crashing down. Particularly as he was here somewhere too...and next on her list, should she get out of this scrape with Caize. Perhaps she had misunderstood what Caize meant though.

Back in the current state of affairs it seemed her trick of trying to throw her opponent off balance hadn't worked. Kiyari realised this unfortunate fact the moment she snapped her leg out to kick Caize and found herself suddenly tackled instead, a move which she definitely didn't expect from him and which instantly winded her. "...!!" She gave a gasp of surprise as he slammed into her and took her down, though immediately her instincts kicked in, telling her that she was in a very bad position and needed to react quickly. Would Caize kill her instantly once he had her trapped? Or would he hesitate?? She had perhaps seconds to find out. Kiyari took the brunt of the impact as they hit the ground and cried out breathlessly, winded again. However she quickly recovered and made to try and impale him with her sword only to have him easily pin her arm down.

The young woman gave another cry of frustration, panting and glaring up at him as she lay pinned beneath him. If she hadn't been fighting for her life she would have been very indignant at this undignified position, and it seemed even in the midst of battle she was at least a little, given the faint tinge of red on her cheeks. "Damn...you!" She gasped, struggling to dislodge him. She could see him bringing his sword up and with her free hand lashed out, striking fast and hard at his wrist with the edge of her palm before he could point the blade at her heart, hoping to make him drop the thing. She then struck at his exposed neck in the same manner in another effort to dislodge him slightly. If he didn't move it was likely she could crush his windpipe with the force of her blow, or least severely wind him. Whether he moved or not Kiyari then used all her strength to pull up her upper body, partly twisted due to him still pinning her sword arm, trying to throw off his balance, roll him over and get him off her. If she succeeded she would end up on top of him instead. Wrestling was not her favourite method of fighting but Caize seemed intent on keeping within her range, she had noticed, and if he insisted upon physically grappling with her like this then she didn't have much choice but to react similarly.

"Hold still for a damn second!"

It was odd. He didn't even care that she swung out and struck his wrist, Caize dropping the sword and taking ahold of her hand before forcing it down as well. That was probably in his best interest, judging by her struggling intent. He grunted as she struggled to get him off of her. "Hold. Still!" He headbutted her, without even thinking. It hurt, but hopefully it would get her to stop struggling for just a second. He thought his head was going to get fuzzy from the impact, but he managed to keep his wits about him as he glared down at her. He knew she wasn't going to stop struggling, given the situation, but he really didn't have the patience to deal with her struggling.

"If you hold still for a damn second I'll let you go!" He was irritated, though Kiyari had good reason to be struggling. He'd been aiming his sword at her heart. Though she couldn't have known he hadn't planned to thrust the blade in. It had more been to get her to hold still for a moment. That obviously hadn't worked. "I won't get any answers any other way, so stop struggling!"

Hold still? Was he crazy? There was no way in hell she was going to remain still so he could deliver the killing blow. She was going to go down fighting with every last breath of her body. Kiyari was satisfied that he'd dropped the sword, as intended, but when he forced her hand down she became even more frustrated and struggled harder...until pain exploded in her forehead as he suddenly, unexpectedly headbutted her. She fell back, dazed and blinking, all attempts to struggle momentarily halted by her surprise and disorientation. 'He just...headbutted me...b*****d...' She thought incredulously, stunned that he'd used such a move. It was a pretty dirty move in her opinion.

She was so stunned that she almost missed his next comment...that he would let her go if she held still. Kiyari shook her aching head to focus and looked up at Caize resentfully. He'd got what he wanted, she lay very still now. She was tense though, as if warily waiting for something bad to happen. Rather like a trapped wild animal. 'He wants answers?' She thought, watching him almost suspiciously and trying to ignore the throbbing of what was probably a bump forming on her forehead. Presumably he meant answers as to why she was now fighting him. She had promised him answers if he managed to beat her, but she had meant if he killed her. Perhaps this counted though, since she was kind of at a disadvantage being trapped like this. "Tch." Kiyari gave an indignant huff and glanced away.

"Very well. Though it won't change anything." She responded finally, still a little breathless at being winded and from struggling so hard. She closed her eyes for a moment, as if composing herself. Depending on what he asked her it wouldn't be easy for her to explain why she'd turned on him like this, and she didn't want to let her emotions get the better of her. She hated looking weak, even more so to him. When her red eyes opened once more she flicked her calm gaze back up to meet his, her face impassive.

Caize met Kiyari's glare with his own. He wasn't happy either, though at least he wasn't the one behind held down. She did stop moving though, so that was a plus side. His head hurt a bit though. He'd chosen this route solely because he knew Kiyari wouldn't give him answers until she was dead, and dead people have a hard time explaining themselves. It made sense he'd take this route. "I don't care if it changes anything." Caize responded cooly, but he did not relax his grip on Kiyari's wrists. He half expected if he did, instead of answering, she'd strike him again. He'd rather not have to deal with that. This wasn't exactly the most comfortable position for him either, but he was putting up with it so that he could get answers he sorely needed.

"Is it your family?"

He didn't even hesitate. He struck straight at the only answer he could come up with for why this situation was even happening. The look in his pink eyes hinted that he already knew the answer, but still he asked it. "And are you sure they're even alive." The follow up question, assuming she answered positively to his first question. He was watching her intently, clearly watching for a lie to slip past her lips. He was not going to accept a lie, that much was clear. He wouldn't even begin to accept a lie. "If you don't at least know they're still alive, you know I won't accept that."

Kiyari's expression didn't change as Caize asked his question. She wasn't surprised that he'd hit the nail on the head, given that he knew her better than anyone, and merely stared at him for a long moment before answering in a level tone. There was no point trying to lie to Caize, she could see that. Nor did she want to. "Yes. More specifically my brother. My father is already dead. They killed him." She spoke as though it was simply fact, like she didn't really care at all. Kiyari was used to shutting off her emotions though. Besides not wanting to look weak, part of her also felt that if she didn't keep check of her emotions she would be overcome with despair at the situation. She didn't want to kill her best friend, and even thinking about it was painful. So it was better this way. It was better just to close off. At Caize's follow up question a dark look passed over her face and she looked away slightly. "Of course I've seen him." She muttered. "Edea has him, and she'll kill him easily at any sign of dissent from me. I won't let that happen. He needs me, Caize." It was more information than she would have preferred to give on the current state of affairs, but she felt she owed it to Caize to explain properly. Kiyari looked back up at him, and for a moment there was a look of weariness in her eyes, but then she composed herself and it was gone. "I've told you. Now let me up." If he didn't let her go, she would fight tooth and nail to get free.

Caize watched her reactions to his questions intently. To a normal person, she showed almost no emotion. To Caize, her response and words told him everything. Caize watched as she looked away, getting a faint breath of disappointment out of Caize. As she asked, he pushed off of her and stood, moving a few steps away. In that moment, she could have struck him, but he slowly turned assuming she hadn't and faced her. His sword lay discarded where she'd knocked it out of his hand, but he didn't seem interested in retrieving it. Silently he reached up and grabbed the sword's handle that was strapped to his back and pulled the longer blade free, letting his arm relax and the tip rest against the floor. This was not a sword she had ever seen, and the very look of it would have told her it had to have been an Estharian sword. The blade was a golden hue, a crossed sword guard with inlain blue hues. The blade itself was a solid length, but still usable if wielded in a single hand. Ideally, it was a two handed sword. The golden hue just seemed to cover every inch of the blade with white lines visible across the blade in unusual pattern without repetition. The grip for the blade appeared to be some black wrap of some sort.

"He's not the only one who needed you." Caize responded, his tone rather passive as he slowly took the sword in both hands and held it in front of himself. He watched Kiyari intently. "If your brother's life is on the line, you have to kill me before the others get to Edea. She won't put up with keeping him alive if he is with her and they show up. You better get to work. You don't have very long to succeed." He adjusted his stance, leading his left in front of his right foot and holding his sword firmly. "Kiyari Vane, you stand against those you swore to protect with your life. As the acting commander and organizer of the forces to which you are employed and have turned on, you are to be executed as a traitor. Fight for your life. This is your trial."

Continuum

Kiyari heard Caize's sigh of disappointment and very briefly a look of hurt flashed across her face, as though it pained her to see him respond in such a way, though he likely didn't see it as he finally got off her. She let out a soft breath at being released and carefully got to her feet, watching him as he moved away. She could have attacked him at that moment, when his back was turned to her and he was vulnerable, but she didn't. Kiyari could see that he'd left his sword on the ground and for a moment wondered if that meant he was giving up...but she should have known better. He removed the sword that hung on his back and Kiyari's gaze warily flicked over the weapon, assessing it.

It was not a blade she had seen him use before that she could recall. It was an impressive one though, with its beautiful array of colours and its unique design. She guessed it was probably from Esthar, and it made her draw in a quick breath of awe. No doubt her answers had prompted him to fight her seriously, if he hadn't already been intending to, because she doubted he would use such a precious weapon otherwise. Kiyari gripped her own sword tightly as he turned to face her, beginning to speak into the tense silence of the hall. The faintest impression of a frown crossed her face at his comment that others needed her. "I cannot think of anyone else who needs me." She replied quietly, glancing away for a moment. His statement that she had better kill him quickly or Edea wouldn't keep her brother alive was nothing new to Kiyari; she knew she was on a time limit.

She watched Caize settle into a stance and did the same, shifting her sword to get a better grip with both hands, the tip pointed at the floor. She angled her body slightly sideways rather than facing him full on. 'This is it.' She thought, watching him intently and waiting. Caize's final words were brutally harsh though and hit Kiyari like a physical blow, making her flinch, her impassive façade finally breaking. "Don't call me that!" She shouted suddenly, her voice filled with bitterness and anger as she glared at Caize. "Don't call me a traitor! Not you...! I did the best I could. You know I did!" Her voice cracked a little and her hands shook with all of the emotion she was repressing. For a moment she looked as if she was about to cry, and then the young woman took a deep breath to steady herself, still glaring at Caize.

"There were a lot of people I couldn't save..." She said faintly, her memories flashing back to their exam, and all of the horrors she'd experienced since then as a SeeD. All of the death and suffering she couldn't stop. "...and I will not let him be one of them!" Kiyari took off suddenly, darting towards Caize with incredible speed, her hair trailing in a stream of red behind her. As she neared him she pushed off from the ground and jumped into the air, rapidly coming down at him in a heavy full frontal attack, bringing her sword down on him. "Raiju! Come to me!" She shouted, and behind Caize a huge snarling beast formed amidst a cloud of crackling lightning and rumbles of thunder. It looked like a tiger or lion of some kind, though its fur had an ethereal silvery quality to it, and sparks of electricity ran over its body. Eyes as white as starlight glared at Caize and upon materialising it leapt towards him with sharp claws and teeth, intent on ripping him apart.
