With all the pacing, the testosterone had seemed like it could be sliced through with a knife. The knife would not even have to be hot. Point being, the only way Harland could think to get this out of the way was a good-natured duel; with tension building between Alistaire and himself, he really didn't want any bad blood to affect friendship in the future. Harland liked things to be calm, harmonious and smooth sailing.

This fight was just the thing, as far as he was concerned-- and sure, he aimed to win, or at least do his best towards that end. Once he and Alistaire made it where they were headed, Harland summoned Coyote from where he'd been stuck as a naval piercing jewelry of a sheriff's badge with two dangling handcuffs.

It looked like a gold, heavy gauntlet that covered his left hand, with three red gems set in to the top of his fist. It extended to cover all of his forearm, around which coiled a gold cable whip snaked over with razor wire. It looked nasty. But it wasn't clear how he would use it.

"If we're goin' t' settle this the right way, 'n all, please excuse me for my haste in startin' us off," he said. And then he felt bad about being hasty in the first place, and totally threw the first move.

Don't throw the fight, you idiot, Coyote chastised him, seething.

Alistaire was inexperienced with fighting, and he preferred to have people do it for him rather than do it himself - but this was a test, an appraisal of skills. Harland was a curious sort, rather dense, Alistaire thought, but it was still good to determine just how useful he could be.

He was exactly the kind of person who could be used.

"You're quite all right," said Alistaire with a vague smile as he swung the chains around, the knives clenched in his hands. The clink of metal filled his ears as he whipped them in the other's direction, slamming them against Harland's side with a satisfying thunk.

Harland winced and coughed in pain. That was impressive, and he decided immediately Alistaire was probably profoundly ruthless as his personality had initially seemed. He had what he'd aimed to glean, in that case.

Too bad it was gonna suck. He was grateful for their shields.

This time, having deployed Coyote using the pressure plate on his palm, Harland slashed the razorwire-wound cable towards Alistaire with whip precision, the air crackling as it snapped towards him. The hook didn't do anything at this stage, so after Harland had deployed it to lash back and forth a couple times, he pressed the pressure plate again, and braced his arm as the cable wound back around: the hookshot was ready to be fired, again.

"Takes a bit of gettin' used to, ye might imagine," Harland said, with a sunny smile. He had done alright in the battle tournament, but not made it very far-- that wasn't terribly surprising, given how new he had been at the time.

Alistaire was not expecting the strength of Harland's return attack. The wire snapped him across the arm first, and then over his chest, and he gave a grunt of mingled surprised and pain, staggering backwards with one hand pressed against his chest. They were equally matched, it seemed, and as Alistaire straightened, he gave the other man a calculating look.

"I do imagine so," he echoed, and swung one of the knives towards Harland, the chains clinking in is ears, Grim shouting encouragements inside of his head; he slashed the blade across Harland's upper torso, and there was a slight smirk on Alistaire's face as he hastily backtracked.

"You fight well so far."

The compliment threw him off so much he didn't even really try to escape the knives. Well, at least, he thought it had been a compliment-- thinking twice about it, he wasn't really sure, but there were more pressing matters to attend to.

Such as being attacked.

Harland coughed, resisting the urge to reach up and check his chest to make sure it was still in one piece. Alistaire seemed relentless, and Harland would compliment him surely once he was sure his voice wouldn't rasp. For now, he just tipped his hat with his free hand. Harland tried to gain some distance, punched his gauntlet-clad fist at Alistaire as a
second thought.

He'd done some physical fitness while growing up, participated in a few self defense classes before he'd determined that it wasn't a good use of his time. Alistaire had always considered himself to be not particularly successful in hand to hand combat, but here, at Deus, where he had a cackling weapon talking inside of his head; he felt strangely exhilarated.

Alistaire smiled.

"I think I'm going to like it here," he said, half dodging Harland's swing and catching his fist somewhere around his torso.

"Beginnin' to think it may be bringing out the worst in you," Harland replied, a flash of concern across his gunmetal green eyes. He frowned; the normally optimistic cowboy wanna-be was starting to worry that this new acquaintance was actually evil and not just a fun nemesis.

Like run full in the opposite direction, pistols at dawn kind of nemesis.

Because he was starting to run out of fuel, but Alistaire seemed fully content to pummel the Irish-American forever. Harland felt a flare of anger from Coyote.

You always want to be the hero, but some wolf comes along and scares you like you're just a sheep to be slaughtered. If you ever want to live with yourself, Harland Leander Belle, you'll get your a** in this fight and stop being such a bleeding heart. Just do it already. And if you're going to run and be a coward, that's fine with me, but don't pretend you're someone who can save anyone.

Harland gritted his teeth, Coyote's monologue severing a nerve in the freckled man. He flexed his gauntlet-clad fingers, and stared at Alistaire with a glint in his eye.

It was not a good glint.

Alistaire touched the tip of one blade to his chin thoughtfully and passed Harland an easy smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes.

"I don't have a worst," he said lightly, and the chains clinked a little more as he readjusted his hold on the dagger, dragging them along behind him. He lashed out at Harland, but it was a weaker strike, and Alistaire darted back, gritting his teeth. Wrapping the chains around one wrist, he turned his head and caught sight of Harland's stare, the way his jaw tensed.

A smile - a real smile - found its way across Alistaire's face.

There we go.

"Not like that, no," Harland whispered, the glint fading and his fist relaxing. "Never goin' to win at the cost of who I want to be," Harland said, looking up at Alistaire to smile in return.

Even if he was being cut to pieces, he'd still smile. Till the end.

For better or worse, that's my cowboy. Now think, you're being vapid, Coyote said, with an equal mixture of frustration and affection.

Harland assessed his nemesis: what had he learned in combat so far? Alistaire was fast, that was his asset, and he could use the chains as well as the blades, though he seemed to favour the bladed edges for obvious reasons. If only there was a way to snare the chains.

Harland's grin widened. Well, let's consider this a learning experience, then.

Harland aimed his gauntlet, braced his arm, and steadied himself. Finally, he depressed the pressure plate and watched as the hookshot aimed straight for the chain.

Whether or not it caught, it seemed like it would at least snare Alistaire. If Harland could keep him still, or impede his speed, it should give him a little recovered ground. Harland had forgotten he was not as simple as he seemed; one of his best assets was his mind and another his memory, which meant he'd sorely been ignoring the skills he brought to this fight. On the other hand, it was becoming rapidly apparent why Harland needed so much muscle: the sheer force of deploying and holding his hookshot steady still slid him across the ground, even in a steady brace.

Harland was such a peculiar fellow, Alistaire determined; the sudden smile caught him off guard, enough that the the whip sent cracking in his direction met its mark. The hook wrapped around the chains and suddenly Alistaire found himself yanked forward, stumbling off balance towards the cowboy.

He nearly collided with Harland, Alistaire letting out a small hiss of mingled pain and annoyance. He staggered back a few steps, attempting to rip his chains free from Harland's grasp. The knife in his left hand slid across Harland's wrist, Alistaire trying to make him loosen his hold.

"So you've figured out then," said Alistaire, "Who you are?"

Harland did recoil, unable to stop the attack on his bare wrist with the gauntlet-clad hand in time. However, that wouldn't relinquish the hook's hold on the chains, and Harland would have to press the plate again to let it go.

But he didn't.

"Well, I can hardly believe I'll ever know that," Harland answered, with his sunny smile intact, though he was in pain. A lot of pain. "It's not a static fact, mo chroí," he added.

What was the reason for Alistaire's icy personality, anyway? The knives matched him: blade-sharp, vicious. Alistaire definitely had a cutting personality. Harland wondered if it was like that all the way through, if he really could be evil like in storybooks.

Harland didn't think so.

"If ye never have a bad side, what's your best side? So I've got a point of reference," Harland said, "for later."

He never did run when he ought to. He yanked the hookshot towards him. Only after that did he press the pressure plate to release the hook from the chains.

He scowled a little, the foreign language confusing him when he didn't like to be confused. Alistaire yanked to try and free the chains again, but to no avail; the hold Harland had on them was tight, and no amount of pulling or twisting was going to get them free yet.

"I said I didn't have a worst side," Alistaire snarled, "I never said I had a best side."

Ian's voice came into his head, mocking, taunting, and Alistaire pushed it aside, trying not to think of his brother. Instead, he shifted his footing, trying to regain his balance, but Harland had yanked forward on the chains and Alistaire found himself being dragged forward, staggering fully into Harland this time.

A terrible nausea rose in his throat, thick and heavy, and Alistaire shoved Harland away from him, his face pale, his fingers shaking slightly as he reeled in the chains, curling them into his palm.

"I don't have a best side."

"An bhfuil tu go maith? Are you... well?" Harland asked, concerned for Alistaire as the icy man stumbled forward and didn't look too good. He let the razor-wire cable coil back around one gauntletted fist, and tipped his cowboy hat off, letting it hang down around his red bandanna. Forget that he could barely keep himself standing up straight, forget that everything hurt and he was dizzy.

Perhaps it would be better to surrender, Harland thought to himself. "Maybe it's me who's not feelin' so swell," he suggested, with a shrug of his shoulders, and a lopsided smile. He ran his injured hand through his hair, getting it messy.

"I bet ye've got a best side, just got to wait to see it," he said, cheerfully. Everyone could be a hero.

Everyone.

He didn't attack again. He waited to see if Alistaire wanted to continue, or if he could use a break. Harland would happily surrender, if it seemed like the other man needed some space, and some air.

"I'm fine."

The word was said a little too loudly, a little too strongly, a little too vehemently to be anything but untrue. The knife shot towards Harland and then back again, a quick strike. Alistaire pressed a hand to his chest and struggled to regain the self control he'd had only moments before, his cheeks red with embarrassment and anger at himself for letting his cover slip.

"You're naive," he said to Harland, teeth gritted. The nausea swelled briefly and then fell back down again, settling low in the pit of his stomach. "Sometimes there are just people that aren't worth it."

Whether or not Alistaire was actually well enough to continue the battle, the other man attacked again, and Harland just wasn't well enough to dodge it after the duration of their fight. Alistaire was too fast, and Harland hadn't kept him at a distance well enough in the beginning.

He'd file this information away, for now.

Barely able to stand, Harland added: "Every single person can be brilliant, everyone is worth it." The conviction in his voice made it thick, quiet.

Now or never, Cowboy. Let's punctuate your pretty face with one last blaze of glory, if we can, Coyote said, gentle with Harland.

Harland smiled, sincere though he was feeling a little like he was about to hallucinate.

With the last strength he had, Harland aimed steadily at Alistaire. And waited. And waited. "Maybe I could even believe in you," he said, smiling as he launched the Gauntlet-Hybrid hookshot directly at Alistaire.
