Lumen is a very upbeat, good-hearted familiar, who retains the wisdom of her years through a youthful sense of purpose. Though she has seen much in her time, she remains very dedicated to her position in life, and to whichever witch she bonds herself to at the time. Because of her knowledge, and a little bit of airheadedness that has stayed with her throughout the years, she has a tendency to babble occasionally.
She enjoys shifting between her forms freely, and allows many of her cat tendencies to slip into her human behavior, such as catnaps, or laying down in strange places. Despite not having a role in life that is much more than a magic pet, Lumen is very pleasant, and maintains a friendly, almost flirty, smile in most situations. Lumen gets more serious, however, when her witch comes to be threatened or insulted, and she'll be very quick to jump to her defense.

Given to a small coven of witches in 1690, Lumen came into the mortal world with a single purpose: to assist witches in the darkest arts. Despite this rather vile work, Lumen has always tried to best to remain optimistic and goodhearted, a quality which she tries to look for in her witches. Her first master, a power-hungry witch who only wanted the power and knowledge Lumen could give to her, was killed in the Salem Witch Trials only a few years after her arrival. While this made Lumen feel a sense of freedom, it brought with it loneliness beyond what she had ever known.
For years, then decades, and eventually centuries, Lumen traveled the US. Meeting a few witches and bonding with them along the way, each pairing only lasted until the witch got herself killed. Watching her witches die, unable to do anything, left Lumen feeling convinced she'd never meet a witch she could truly depend on, and whom could depend on her.
That is, until she drifted, alone, into the town of Mystic Falls, and was discovered in an alley by a young woman named Vega Valentine. Studying her empathic aura, Lumen was able to discover the magic within the woman, and chose to reveal herself. After a short bonding process, Lumen pledged herself to Vega, and now lives with her as a guide in her magical endeavors.
