User ImageThe sun hung high in the clear sky, and the gentle breeze played with the large bright feathers on Jasmine's earring. The mare was walking at a leisurely pace, careful of the small foal that weaved back and forth between her legs. She looked ahead to the two unicorn mares that she'd been traveling with since before Alder was born. Alucia and Stasya were the kindest mares she had ever had the pleasure of meeting, and they reminded her of better times. They had saved her that fateful day when her mother had pushed her into the river to save her from the Skinwalker that had slaughtered their herd. They had pulled Jasmine from the river and nursed her back to health. She was eternally grateful, and had been even more grateful when they helped her through her unexpected pregnancy and birth. A headbutt against her knee drew the mare from her thoughts.

"Alder, darling, stop that," she laughed, lifting a hoof.

Quote:
User ImageAlder smiled up at his mother when she spoke, and rubbed his head against her leg, gentler this time. "Okay, mama,"

He skipped out from under her hooves, and walked closely beside her. He wondered where they were going, but he never questioned the two unicorns of the group. One, because he was just a generally shy foal, and two, because Alucia and Stasya seemed to have a sixth sense when it came to helping those in need. Alder kept his eyes ahead as they continued on.

Quote:
User ImageStasya hummed to herself as she walked beside her apprentice. It was a nice, sunny day and Stasya believed this to be a sign of good to come. The mare was the happiest she had ever been. She had gone from traveling alone to traveling with three more wonderful soquili - and one was a unicorn like her! Her tail swished behind her as they neared a copse of trees. She turned back to her traveling companions.

"Watch out for raised roots," she advised, before turning back to the path ahead.

Quote:
User Image"Hmmm," Alucia eyed the trees in front of her, careful of the roots and gnarled branches that reached out towards her. She had done more with her powers since Stasya had found her than she had her entire life. Her adopted parents were not unicorns, and they did not possess the means to teach her. Now, though, Alucia was feeling envigorated. She was itching to heal someone, something, anything! Stasya was a wonderful teacher, and Alucia was eternally thirsty for knowledge.

Alucia squinted at the treeline, before turning to Stasya. "I think there's something up ahead," she whispered.

Ryuukishin:

Quote:
User ImageThe day was cool and gentle, but Inugami felt like fire as she collapsed in the shade of an oak. Blood seeped through from the wounds upon her hide, gouges made by the sharpened tines of her foe. Twice they’d met upon the field of battle, and twice by a stroke of luck he’d gotten away. But all evils would eventually meet their end, and their third encounter, she swore, would be their last.

Inugami was no stranger to injuries, especially ones upon her own person, but this area was new and strange and she did not yet know what medicines might be found here. With a pang, she felt the throbs of regret at having sent the mare away – the one with the twisted lips who’d tried to help her. But it was too late to call her back, and there was nowhere else to go but forward. Shifting with gasping breath to place her feet beneath her, she attempted to rise.

Quote:
User ImageAxelle winged down upon the forest’s edge, the spotting of her coat serving as warning to any passing by, in addition to her spaded tail and wicked horns. She was a pure-blooded Kalona through and through, but she was not here to perpetuate the stereotypes of her breed – not today, at least. The Kalona war had settled, and though it would still sting bitterly to many, the event was no longer in the forefront of everyone’s mind. It was times like these, then, that she could learn more of the soquili here without immediately inciting their animosity.

She’d spotted a small herd from up above, and now she sought them out on land, doing what she could to conceal her movements.

Quote:
User ImageBacillus looked round, his wings mantled against the sudden smell of blood that reached him on the wind. He could find no sign of its source, but that only discomforted him more. Was someone hurt? Were predators nearby? Had a fight occurred, or was it still going on? He had to admit, the thought alone was disconcerting. But he’d a duty to help others, and the least he could do was check. It wasn’t as if he wasn’t capable of fending off anyone if he had to, though, really, he’d rather not.

With a snort, he pushed such thoughts aside. What would his family think if they saw him now? He had the training and had journeyed out for a reason – there was no reason to be afraid. And so, before he could change his mind, he trampled on towards the scent.

Quote:
User ImageMoira stared at the ground as she walked, concentrating to place one foot in front of the other. It got easier to walk as she went along, but it was still confusing to her to stop and start and she had to make sure she got it right if she didn’t want to fall down and start all over again. Left and right and left again, right in front of the other, and... she had it!

Pleased with her progress, she quickened her steps even more, turning this way and that to see what lucky stranger would get to be audience for her today. She thought she could hear steps coming from the forest ahead, and though the roots proved to be some obstacle, she was small enough to be able to slip under most of them, if not circumvent them completely.

User ImageAlucia rushed forward the moment her eyes landed on the bloodied form of the mare, eager to assess the damage and help.

“Don’t try to get up,” she cooed, keeping her voice soft and comforting like Stasya had taught her. “We can help you,”

A small part of her knew she should be cautious of the mare in front of her, but she was the epitome of a unicorn. She put the needs of others above her own, and while that did get her in trouble sometimes, it's not something she saw changing anytime soon.

Quote:
User ImageStasya felt her heart stop for a moment when she spotted the paws of the mare that her apprentice was running towards.

“AL -” she cut herself off as she realized that the injured mare lacked a sinister pelt. Despite this fact, she was a bit reluctant in her approach. Whatever she was, she looked quite sinister. “Alucia, don’t crowd her, let her breathe,” she instructed.

The bloodied puncture wounds looked deep, but not fatal on their own. The blood loss was the most worrying to her. She frowned and eyed the crimson grass beneath the white mare.

“What happened to you? How long have you been here?” They’d have to at least get the wounds on the mare’s hide to stop bleeding. Their urgency depended entirely on how long she had been sitting out here, bleeding.

Quote:
User ImageAlder’s eyes had not left the odd-looking mare since Alucia and Stasya had rushed to her side. The only soquili he was familiar with were his mom and the two unicorns, and the only time he would see others was when they were injured and under the care of Alucia and Stasya. He’d seen others with wings, others with horns, and others with fins - but he had never seen someone with paws!

The foal tentatively edged forward, trying to get a better angle from which to observe the mare. But suddenly a sharp pain entered his tail and he yelped as he was pulled backwards. Whipping his head around, he stared into the wide, panicked eyes of his mother.

“M-Mama?”

Quote:
User ImageJasmine’s heart was beating a mile a minute as she used all of her strength to push her son behind a large rock after releasing his tail. She turned away from Alucia, Stasya, and the wounded mare and tried to calm herself. The paws, the red eyes, the tail, and the teeth - and the blood! It had brought back a maelstrom of awful memories that she had painstakingly shoved down to the depths of her conscience. Shaking her head, she glanced back to see that no harm had come of her unicorn friends… yet.

“Alder, baby, please stay right there and don’t move, okay? Can you do that for Mama, please?”

Without waiting for an answer, Jasmine started to edge away from the rock and approach Stasya.

Ryuukishin:

Quote:
User ImageInugami was more than willing to comply with the unicorn’s request, though it was not by choice so much as a trembling of the muscles that made it impossible to stand. Despite her fatigue, she felt her fur stand on end at the approach of the herd. Their caution was familiar to witness, but the bejeweled mare’s response was most worrisome; fear made soquili do desperate things, and she did not think she could stand another assault.

“I fought, and did not win,” she answered coolly – or at least attempted to; her speech was slurring at the edges and her half-lidded eyes were a result of exhaustion rather than calm appraisal. “I have not been here long... are you here to help, sister?” she asked, looking from one unicorn to the other. Their horns did not escape her notice, and her claws flexed against the grass.

Quote:
User ImageAxelle drew close to the group, curious to see what the gathering was about. At first glance she thought the others were out to attack the mare at their center, and she remained concealed behind a thick frond of ferns, unwilling to act before she could assess the situation. The white-pelted mare certainly looked the part of a skinwalker, but she knew from first-hand experience that appearances were not everything. There had been many a time when she’d been taken for the wild, unthinking kalona – as if every breed did not have their share of brutes – and she was not about to do the same.

Some time passed, and despite the tension on both sides, none attacked. The mare was injured as well – had someone already done her in? Axelle remained as she was, waiting to see what these stranger Kawani landers would do.

Quote:
User ImageThe smell was getting stronger.

Bacillus rushed onward, caution thrown to the wind as soon as he realized the blood belonged to a fellow soquili. He followed the trail by sight when the dappled sunlight permitted, and by scent otherwise, though by now the coppery smell was so overpowering he was feeling a tad faint. It seemed two had been wounded, but only one remained close by. What happened to the other? Had it been beaten? Chased off? Killed? No, no, no: that would require leaving a body behind. Unless a predator had eaten it whole, that is.

Heart hammering, he sprinted the remaining distance and crashed quite unexpectedly into the field. “I-is anyone hurt?!”

Quote:
User ImageThe noise was growing raucous by this point, and Moira had no trouble finding the gathering. Step by step she came closer, but when she finally reached them, it was not the wounded mare that took her attention. The breeze was blowing the smell of blood the other way, and Moira had yet to realize someone was hurt; instead, a twitching tail at the corner of her eye caused her to turn suddenly, without conscious thought, and she immediately pounced on it as a cat might its prey.

Her reach was off and she stumbled instead, and the hopping steps she took to regain her carefully won balance only led her deeper behind the large rock.

User ImageJasmine stayed close behind Stasya and Alucia. She was uneasy, but the mare on the ground had not made any threatening moves towards them. She made brief eye contact with Stasya, who seemed to silently be asking her if she was okay. She swallowed and nodded, before returning her attention to the pawed female’s wounds. She did not possess the powers of a unicorn, but Jasmine was able to gather herbs and help where she was needed. She took a deep breath and waited for instructions.

Quote:
User ImageAlucia smiled and looked from Stasya to their patient. From what Stasya had taught her, she had deduced that they would need to clean the wound and address the biggest problem - the bleeding. Was there water nearby? They’d have to send Jasmine for water, but the mare looked like she was ready to bolt at the slightest movement.

“Of course we will help you, that is what we do. Right Stasya?”

Quote:
User ImageStasya nodded at both Alucia’s question and the mare’s. “Yes, Sister, we are here to help. However, there will be discomfort, even pain while we work to heal you. I need your word that you will not harm anyone in my group -”

Stasya was caught off guard when a stallion burst through the trees. Momentarily thinking that it was the aggressor that had wounded her patient, she instinctively stepped in his path. When his words and flustered demeanor registered, she let loose a breath.

“Yes, someone is injured. Will you offer assisstance?”

Quote:
User ImageAlder squeaked as something landed next to him. He whirled around and backed himself up against the rock. Expecting a monster, he was surprised to see a foal, just like him. She was white with black and rainbow markings and she was… she was pretty. Alder grew flustered, and quickly looked away from her blue eyes and down at the ground. He shuffled around the rock so that half of his body was shielded from her view.

“Who - Who are y-you?” he mumbled. He wanted to run to his mother’s side and hide beneath her tail, but she had told him to stay near the rock and he was not one to disobey orders.
