User ImageIt wasn’t fun… None of this was. This traveling and having people fear him. Vidoun grunted, letting out a small snort through his nostrils. Air turned wet from the morning humidity, and it showed as his breath did. Flicking his tail to the side, the large orange stallion moved through the trees, his muscles giving a small quiver. He didn’t want to be here… didn’t want to have to deal with all this. The feeling of being an outsider; an outcast to the world around him. Pinning his ears, Vidoun moved quietly toward the tree line. He needed to find a place where he would be able to eat quietly. It took him quite some time to finish his meals, and he needed to be safe when he did so.

The small red bear let out a pleased hum as she marched alongside him. Chain trotted forward, moving into the grass before looking around carefully. At first, she wasn’t certain if it was safe. But after some time she nodded to the orange stallion, and moved forward. Vidoun followed behind her quietly, his head dipping down to brush his soft nose against her flank. She smiled back at him, before running forward to roll around in some of the grass. Vidoun watched her for a moment, before tiling his head to the side. He flicked his ears, before following quietly.

He was raised knowing he was a monster. Growing up with his mother and father had been hard. At first, he was happy; training under Anchor’s watchful eye and growing strong. But things went wrong when his mouth was sewn shut, and his family was pushed in disarray. He was abandoned, and raised on his own. As he developed and matured, a young bear, the bear he stayed with now, cared for him. They became best friends, and she learned to understand him even though he couldn’t speak. He hadn’t seen his parents since, and had no intention on going to find either of them.

Shifting lightly, Vidoun stopped to look around once more. He was strong, and could take down anyone that dared to try and hurt him or his friend. But he didn’t want to do that. He was a sweetheart by nature. He helped others, gathering apples for sick creatures or secretly protecting those that were too weak to until they found somewhere else they could thrive. He leaned and gave the bear a gentle nuzzle, careful not to hurt her, before turning his attention to the grass. He had to angle his head just right, get the blades through the strings, and into his mouth, before he could rip them up and force them deeper with his tongue. He ground at the blades, before swallowing easily. Repeat that over and over, and he would be able to fill his stomach.

Chain moved over to where Vidoun was, sitting down beside him as he ate in peace. She kept her eyes moving around them, analyzing everything that happened to move or make a noise. She wasn’t going to let anyone sneak up on her best friend while he ate! No way! Vidoun flicked an ear toward Chain as she began to hum, before continuing to eat in peace.

Gently, gently; light footsteps, take care in your foot placement. Watch where you're going, don't step on any twigs if you can avoid them; be the wind, be a tuft of dandelion down on the breeze-

CRACK!

"Damn it, damn it, damn it!" With the breaking of one branch, the silence of the forest was broken in one fell swoop. It had been a proud silence, a companionable silence, even an enjoyable silence, but that one branch had ruined everything. And Robelia had never been a mare of mild emotion, one to simply accept when things went wrong and move on. No, with her, everything she did was a passion; in every activity, every chore, every moment of her life was embraced with almost militant zeal. It was only natural that with such high passions involved, frustration was bound to erupt from time to time.

Right now, she was more than a little 'frustrated.' It had been several weeks since the conversation with her father that had so provoked her. A child of the mountains, Robbie had been born, bred, and brought up in one of the closest and most loving herds in the region. But there were certain facets of herd life that had chafed at Robbie; most of all, the rule that mares were not allowed to serve the herd as border guards or scouts. Robbie had always idolized the herd protectors, whose numbers included her fathers, some brothers, friends, and cousins. But in spite of her best efforts, her (incredibly reasonable) request to learn to fight and serve alongside the stallions had been tersely rejected by the one stallion who had the power to assist: her father.

Having been a 'daddy's girl' since birth, Robelia had known talking Grencia around to her point of view would be rough. She had been disappointed, but not surprised, when Grencia had refused to so much as consider the idea, even going so far as to twist her complaints about the tedium of mare's work into disrespect for her mother and the other herd mares.

Obviously, things were not going to cooperate with her desires in the Summit, her family's herd. So she dove into 'plan B', which was leaving the Summit for the lowlands, in quest for one of her numerous brothers. She'd never met this particular brother, but like all males of the herd he had been trained. She knew that he was a free-spirit, and she was gambling on the hope that he, until their more traditional father and older brothers, would be willing to train a female.

~~~
There were certainly complications to the plan; for starters, she'd never see Fenghuang, and had no idea where he lived. But these were of no matter to Robbie, who was confident that if she remained positive and pressed on, she would persevere. So far, it had been a good trip; she'd made it out of the Summit lands without being stopped, had made it past the boulder fields without running in the boogeyman, had found a chicken, and had made it into the forest. She was working on her physical skills; balance and grace, speed, strength...and stealth.
Obviously, stealth was not proving her friend, and she swore again as she kicked at the offending branch, a branch which she had, most frustratingly, snared with her mane! "Damn it!"
The aforementioned chicken, a brilliantly green fellow who had been resting up in the branches of a tree, opened one eye and looked down at her. "I don't think this is very stealthy, Miss Robbie."
Vidoun's ears flicked lightly to the side as he ate his meal. His body quivered for a moment, before falling deathly still. He had heard something. Lifting his head slowly, the stallion looked around, his hooded eyes sharp. He scanned the area for a moment, before looking down at Chain. The small bear blinked, shrugged, and got up to look around curiously. Vidoun watched her for a few moments, before going back to his silent grazing, his tail giving a small flick.
Chain moved quietly toward the trees, her eyes flickering. She looked around for several moments, before climbing quickly to the top of a tree. She looked around for several moments, before spotting a green chicken not too far from her. The bear blinked, her eyes flickering along the chicken, before she spotted something else moving within the trees. Moving carefully, Chain jumped over to another tree. She stared down for a few moments, before tilting her head from one side, and then the other.
The mare she saw made her grin. She was pretty! Chain thought so, at least. And she looked sweet.... Though, of course, Chain was being a little pushy to have Vidoun have more friends. Her ears flicked up for a moment, before she climbed down the tree, landing easily on her butt. She wiggled her snout, before getting up and wiggling forward and through some bushes to get a better look at the mare. She was even prettier up close! Chain frowned some, before letting a small smirk shift out onto her features. She laid herself down quietly, before letting out a rather loud, distressed noise and rolled onto her side, letting out even more noises as though she was hurt.
Vidoun was very peaceful in his eating. Up until he heard the noise. He knew Chain's noises by heart. His ears flicked up quickly, and his head snapped up and pointed toward the direction of the sounds. He frowned deeply, before moving quickly toward the noises. His hooves broke branches as he moved quickly. He ducked under a branch that was too tall for him to walk under calmly. He only stopped when he saw Chain, perfectly fine, and laying on the ground with an innocent look on her face. Vidoun frowned even deeper, his eyebrows pulled together. For a moment, he thought about questioning what he was doing, before something reddish caught his eyes. He glanced up from his friend, to stare toward the other creature. At first, he was taken aback, and took a small step back, his ears pinning back for a moment as he stared at the mare.
It did not bode well for Robelia's long-term survival in a forest setting, her inability to focus on the world at large and her own immediate concerns. The sad truth was that she was being woefully unobservant, having heard and seen no trace of the bear before the wails and distressed noises of a creature in pain broke in on her cursing. Later, she would have cause to look back on the moment and blush; if Chain had been a bear of sinister purposes instead of a bear of...social purposes, it might have gone quite poorly for Shambles, Robbie, or both!
She had been in the process of formulating a sharp response to Shambles' 'observations,' when the loud, anguished cries of pain, coming from quite close to them, made her practically jump out of her skin. It was somewhat ironic, to be taken unawares when she was ostensibly practicing stealth, but that was the long and short of it.
A quick glance around and she saw the bear for the first time. It wasn't a large bear, thank goodness, but it was curled up on the ground, moaning and crying out in pain. Warily, she glanced around the clearing, looking to see if there were any other bears; she was no expert on bears, but she knew that you should look for a mother bear when a young bear was around. Was this a young bear? How was one supposed to tell?
But there was no roaring, or any other noises to indicate another bear was about. She let out a deep breath and was just starting to move towards the bear when a sharp call from Shambles, "Something's coming!" made her jump back from the bear and look around wildly. Something was coming, she could hear the crunching and breaking of branches as something large made its way towards them. Was is a mother bear? What was the best way to get away from a mother bear? She was tensing up, ready to call for Shambles to jump down and they'd run for it...
..When the 'bear' was suddenly there, staring down at the wounded bear. Bearlet? Cub? Whatever it was. Either way, it was no additional bear, but a Soquili stallion. Relief washed over her, and she let out a breath she hadn't even realized she was holding in a bout of merry laughter. It was entirely possible that the stallion was a dangerous sort himself, but the fact he wasn't an angry bear was enough for now. Laughing, she beamed at the fellow and burst out, "I am so pleased you aren't an angry bear!"
Vidoun's panic seemed to only flare when he saw Chain unharmed. That moment quickly faded, and turned into confusion and almost embarrassment. How odd... Why had he come running in like that? The stallion's legs gave a soft quiver as he debated on running once more. Why had Chain done this? Why had Chain summoned him with such an alarming wail? It was dangerous. His friend being in trouble was something that Vidoun refused to allow happen. He would always come running; and generally with a sense that he would be there to fight. He snorted lightly, more of a habit than anything, and lowered his head slightly until his spine was almost straight. This wasn't good... Now he was scared and uncertain.
Chain looked between Vidoun and the new mare, her little nubby tail wiggling behind her. She shifted up onto all fours, and let out a small noise, before bounding over to Vidoun to sit by his hooves. "Of course he isn't a bear!" She said, smiling up at the mare. She glanced back toward Vidoun and almost grimaced. She hadn't seen Vidoun that irritated in quite some time. He stared down at her with a disapproving look, before huffing lightly through the rope sewn along his lips. He lifted all black eyes back toward the mare across from him, before straightening himself. His head lifted some, almost in a show of honor. After some consideration, his eyes flickered down toward the ground.
Several quiet moments ticked by, before Vidoun shifted again. He slowly lowered his front legs, bending them until he did a sort of bow, his ears pinning back slightly. He nuzzled at Chain's shoulder, before grunting and kind of mumbling toward her. His noises didn't sound like words, but growing up with him, the bear seemed to understand. Chain nodded lightly, smiling toward him, before her eyes flickered back up and toward the mare. "He wishes me to tell you that his name is Vidoun. And that he is pleased to meet a mare of such exquisite beauty!" Chain said, quite pleased with herself.
It was obvious that Vidoun had not said that last bit. He snorted some and turned his head toward the bear. After a moment, he shook his head and slowly stood up. He opened his mouth as far as he could, before closing it again, and let out a small hum. His eyes flickered down toward his hooves, as if he was embarrassed that his friend had just said such a thing. His tail flicked lightly behind him, and his muscles gave a soft quiver, before he lifted his eyes once more. He locked them on the mare, before bowing his head some in a sort of greeting.
To say that the stallion's body language was strange was putting it mildly, and it gave Robbie pause. A closer scrutiny of both stallion and bear followed, which left Robbie baffled and intrigued in equal measure.
Sure, she had seen her fair share of what could be called 'unusual' Soquili in the slopes. Some of the border guards in particular were unique, with hulking bodies, massive wings, horns, jaws filled with rows of sharp, nasty teeth. Her own family was predominately regular Soquili and winds, but her father's phoenix traits seemed confined to her own family; she'd never seen anyone other than a relative with antenna feathers or the striking phoenix tails she and several of her siblings sported. So all things considered, she considered herself an open-minded Soquili, not one to be put off by something as inconsequential as physical appearance.
However, she'd never seen a Soquili quite like this. She'd noticed the horn and the back armor at first, but closer observation drew to her attention the small cloven hooves, more like a deer than the cloven hooves of the unicorn's she'd met. His mane hung down over his eyes, so she hadn't really seen much of his face. However, when he straightened up and 'spoke' to the bear, she realized for the first time that there was something...unusual about his mouth. It wasn't polite to stare, of course, so she tried not to look at the area, but it was almost as if it was...grown together? That must making talking quite the challenge, to say nothing of eating!
Poor fellow.
However, one sentiment was conspicuously absent in Robbie as she finished her mental assessment of the stallion: Fear. It simply wasn't in her nature to be afraid of another Soquili without reason, and a unique appearance was hardly a suitable reason. His bear seemed friendly, after all, and the stallion himself was not behaving in a threatening manner. She wasn't great on body language, but she could interpret a bow as well as anyone else!
So she smiled at both bear and stallion, chuckling a bit at the outrageous compliment. Having a bear as a conversational middleman was a bit new, but wasn't life meant for new experiences? "Well, it's nice to meet you as well, Vidoun and Mouthpiece," Robbie said with a sly grin. "And thank you for the compliment, whichever one of you came up with it. I'm Robelia, but everyone calls me Robbie, and this," she added with a nod of her head towards the chicken in the tree, "is Shambles. He wishes he could speak for me, but his loss is my gain."
"Charmed," said Shambles drily. For his part, he didn't know what to make of the unlikely pair of stallion and bear, and he wasn't going to come out of his tree until he was a bit more comfortable with the situation.
Dismissing Shambles' brevity as par for the course, Robbie glanced from Vidoun to Chain with obvious curiousity. Her earlier alarm over, she inquired of Chain, "You're not hurt, then? You or you, Vidoun? Because that was quite the performance earlier, you had both Shambles and I feeling alarmed."
Vidoun wasn't certain whether he should nudge the small bear with his hoof to reprehend her, or just ignore her the remainder of the day. His ear flicked irritably as he stared down toward the bear. How could she do something like that? From the day they met, Vidoun and Chain had worked well together. Chain never did anything to hurt Vidoun; never did anything that would make their friendship seem like it was bad. When it came to speaking for him, Chain had always been on the defensive; never gave too much away and kept everything at the perfect emotional level. It was strange for her to say such things in front of the mare.
Chain glanced back toward the mare, ignoring Vidoun's dark looks. She wiggled her tail some, and stood up to clamber toward the chicken. For a moment, she didn't know what to do, but then she dug her claws into the side of the tree, and started to climb. She wiggled her way all the way up to where Shambles was, before moving onto a near by branch, where she sat curtly. She tilted her head toward the chicken, smiling toward him, before waving her paw toward the chicken lightly. She glanced back down toward the two, before grinning lightly. "They're gunna fall in love." She whispered cheekily, before looking back down toward the two Soquili.
Vidoun watched Chain for several seconds, before ignoring her completely. He turned his black eyes back toward Robbie, before tilting his head to the side. At her question, he shook his head. Vidoun lifted his eyes back toward Chain, not understanding what she had whispered, before looking back down toward Robbie. She was lovely, and kind... She hadn't said anything about his appearance or tried to run from him. Not even a comment. It kind of made him feel at east. He shook out his mane as best he could, causing the short bangs to flip over his ears and out of his face. He dipped his head toward her, grunting somewhat, before lifting his head up once more.
Shambles didn't quite know what to make of this situation, so he had been content to stay up in the tree and observe. Sure, he would have leapt right in if Robbie appeared to be in actual danger, but right now the situation was just odd. Odd, and involved a bear. THAT made him uncomfortable, even if the bear was a familiar. After all, bears would eat chickens without even thinking of it! So when Chain came climbing up and perched right next to him, Shambles found his discomfort level level climbing and gave Chain a solemn look and a shrug. He wasn't about to get into any profound conversation with a bear he still wasn't sure about!
For her part, Robbie wasn't phased. She was a lot bigger than Chain, and she was used to more weirdness than Shambles. After all, she and Shambles were together because she'd recused him from a fox; he was entitled to a bit of anxiety on that score, but that didn't mean Robbie shared it.
Besides, she wasn't really paying attention to Shambles right now anyway. Without Chain translating, she had to make sense of Vidoun on her own, and that took a bit of attention! Grinning, she returned the head bob. "I guess I'll take that silence as a 'no, you're not hurt. Good to see that you only have an overly dramatic familiar and not an injured one!"
The bear smiled happily, her tail wiggling some. She watched the two Soquili, before looking over toward the chicken again. Her head cocked to the side, before she smiled at him, and waved a paw lightly. "Don't be so sour! It's a good thing, yup!" She said, giggling, before looking back down toward the two horses. Her ears perked some, and she shifted to lay down so she could watch them a bit more. Her bright eyes lingered on the mare, before glancing over toward Vidoun.
Vidoun's ears flicked somewhat, before he lifted his eyes up toward Robbie. He blinked a bit, tail flicking behind him. His muscles gave a small quiver, before he tilted his head. He looked from Robbie, then up the tree and toward the creatures that resided there. Chain seemed content in the tree, and Shambles seemed... irritated, at best. His eyes narrowed some, before he looked back down toward Robbi. He listened to her intently, before letting out a grunt and nodded his head, as if agreeing. He dipped his head down and nudged the ground with his nose, before lifting his head up again. He tilted his head toward her, as though asking how she was, as best as he could. He tried to mumble it, but it came out as small grunts and hums instead of words.
Now there was a comment Shambles couldn't take lying down. Ruffling his feathers in his agitated way, he huffed a bit at the overly enthusiastic bear. "I'm not being sour, I'm being prudent. And I will NOT be happy if you try to eat me, just so you know. Neither with Miss Robbie; she's come to enjoy having me around, and we both know what bears can be like." He shuffled a little ways down the branch, putting more distance between himself and the bear while she was distracted by the Soquili. "Perhaps you're a very lovely bear, but you're still a bear, so please excuse me if I'm not comfortable with this arrangement so soon after meeting you." That was fair enough, right?
It was true that Robbie would miss Shambles if something happened to him, but at the moment she wasn't in the least concerned about him. The bear had been pleasant enough; while she knew that creatures with devious intentions were capable of acting nice to hide their true intentions, she simply didn't feel that either the very social Chain or the very silent Viduon were up to no good. She wouldn't do anything stupid, mind you; she still wanted to be a border guard one day, and being a border guard meant behaving with prudence in all circumstances. However, it also meant relying on her judgement and her instincts, and both of those things were telling her that for now, both she and Shambles had nothing to worry about.
Of course, that could be her curiousity getting the better of her, but she was going to go with 'it's all safe' all the same!
Vidoun was unusual, there was no getting around that; however, in his own way, he was being very courteous and mannerly. He was keeping his distance, which was appropriate when meeting a stranger for the same time; he was giving every appearance of listening to everything she said, and even offering an 'answer', albeit one composed of equal parts murmur and gesture. Languages had never been a strong suit of hers, but that didn't mean she wasn't willing to work on that! "Good, good. Shambles and I are also well; any outbursts you may have heard earlier were purely due to frustration, not due to any injury or problem. I realize there is an irony in making noise as a result of making noise, but apparently I'm turning into an ironic mare."
Chain blinked over toward the chicken. What..? Eat...? She frowned some, tilting her head as if she was offended, her eyes flickering a bit. She didn't like that! "Eat... you? Silly! I've never eat anything more than fish and berries. Besides, you have a friend and stuff... what if I did that and your friend was upset and lonely! That wouldn't be very nice... I could never do that... Ever!" She said softly. She shifted a bit to get comfortable on the branches, watching Robbie and Vidoun with interest. They seemed to be getting along well! And that was good! Vidoun needed a friend that wasn't just... well.. a bear. She loved the boy dearly, but he needed some other people he could be close to and love and stuff!
Or at least hopefully love. Chain wanted him to love badly!
Vidoun's ears flicked some as she spoke. He tilted his head, watching the mare quietly with his dark eyes. So she wasn't hurt either? He had heard the noises before, and deemed them not worth his attention. After all, he didn't want to barge into someones business when they were busy. But then Chain had disappeared, and made a noise... and he thought the two could have been connected. He flicked his ear for a moment, peering up toward the trees and his friend, before lowering his eyes back down toward the mare. Robbie, her name had been... She was nice, and Vidoun liked that about her. It was hard for him to find people that could accept him so easily. He blinked some, as though confused about the making noise bit. What was she trying to accomplish?
The stallion dipped his head some, blinking at her, before straightening. Vidoun moved curiously over to a branch, before stomping his hoof down onto it. It made a loud CRACK noise, snapping almost instantly under his strong hoof. He lifted his head to peer at her again, head tilted slightly as if to question if that was what had upset her. He didn't get it. Making noise wasn't a bad thing, was it? Unless one was sneaking around. But for some reason Vidoun couldn't see Robbie sneaking around. At least not at this time of year... Autumn would probably be better, since it was then orange and red and brown, and she could blend in much better... Right? The stallion moved back over toward her, head tilting one way, and then toward the branch, as if questioning if the noises were something that had upset her.
Shambles wasn’t quite ready to trust the bear, but at her vehement assurances he decided to at least give her the benefit of the doubt. Consequently, he stopped edging away and settled himself down more comfortably on the branch. At least the bear had good instincts; it was commendable that she wouldn’t eat a familiar, even if she did admit to being a carnivore. Or an omnivore, he supposed; fish were barely animals in his mind, but they were animal enough.
Either way, he gave Chain a slight nod of acceptance and then returned his attention to their Soquili companions. He and Robbie were relatively new together; it had only been about a month since she had rescued him from the fox determined to make a meal of him. But in that month, he had become quite fond of her, and protective as well. The bear might be ok for now, but he wasn’t sure what he thought of the stallion. He was just so…odd. He’d have to keep an eye on that one.
For her part, Robbie was pleased when the chatter from the tree ended. Shambles was a sweet fellow, but he could be a bit over cautious sometimes. That was part of why she liked him so much; she was a practical mare, but she was good at flying off half-cocked when she was struck by an impulse. Having Shambles around kept her grounded, and she appreciated that. Plus, he was a native of this region, which she was not; any aid of that sort was an advantage while she bumbled around looking for Fenghuang!
But at the moment, she was in a very novel situation, and she wanted to enjoy it for as long as she could. Having Shambles verbally pecking at Chain was a bit distracting, to put it mildly.
She laughed as Vidoun’s hoof came down on the branch, the sharp cracking noise an easy mimic of her previous mishap. “Yep, that’s what I did earlier, and since I was practicing moving in a sneaky fashion, having a branch branch with the volume of a coyote’s howl was counterproductive. Stealth is not easy for me to begin with unless I’ve rolled around in the mud.” She paused, pursing her lips and shaking her head. Mud was not a favorite of hers, seeing how long it took her to clean it out of her mane, but if she wanted to be a border guard she couldn’t afford to be picky about something like looks. Honestly, she probably ought to just find someone to cut it short for her…
Later. Much later. There would be time for that when she was more prepared; she wasn't afraid or ashamed to admit that when it came to her hair she could be a bit vain. In the meantime…”Are you good at sneaker, Vidoun? Perhaps you can give me some tips, if so!”
Chain glanced at the bird, before she smiled sweetly. Maybe someday she would win over the chicken! But for now, she was very curious about Vidoun and this pretty mare! Her little tail wiggled behind her, and she tilted her head down to watch. She wanted to go down and push the two together and make kissy noises. Though Chain didn't often "support" other people near her friend, she for some reason really liked this mare! And Vidoun needed a friend who was... well no one was really /his/ size, but someone who would be able to keep up with him and walk with him and stuff! Yea! Chain grinned some, before moving to another branch for a better view, her tail wiggling again. She hummed slightly, licking her muzzle and dropping her head down between some leaves to watch the duo interact.
Vidoun's ear flicked slightly at the noise from the trees. Chain had moved, and he registered it and locked her position in his mind. He didn't need to look up, he had spent a good deal of time training with his father on how to fight and track; so he had a good method of being able to move around and be able to understand all that was happening. He was aware of his situation, and aware of the world around him. Chain and the chicken... Shambles, in the trees. He was honestly surprised a chicken could get into the trees. Could it fly? He would have to watch Shambles if he was able to stick around for long. Chain was active as ever, and it was putting him on edge, but he tried to relax and stay calm. Instead, he flicked his tail, and cocked his head to the side so he could peek at Robbie through his bangs.
Vidoun's ears picked up slightly and pointed toward the mare. He tilted his head, before letting out what could only be assumed as a chuckle; his breath coming out between his sewn closed mouth, with a small noise in there that could only be assumed as a laugh. he shook out his body, before pausing. He blinked down at her. Sneaky? Him? He was a big orange stallion. He wanted to laugh, but at the same time, he knew how to sneak if he needed. He tilted his head, before nodding his head slightly, and looked around. He pointed with his nose off in the distance, before turning his body that way. if she wanted, he could show her some now; though it would be a little hard to do so, without his ability to talk. He was certain he could attempt to show her though; and teach her what he knew without speaking. Maybe it could work..
Yay, Shambles had finally stopped his grousing. Robbie didn't look up to see what the cause of that silence meant, simply taking it instead as something to be enjoyed. She knew that whatever he was doing, Shambles could handle himself; she just liked him to handle himself in a way that wasn't too fussy. Chain seemed like she was a nice enough bear, and Robbie felt she could be trusted not to eat her familiar while her attentions were engaged elsewhere.
And really, they needed to be elsewhere! Robbie was grateful that Chain had been there to make the initial introductions, but Robbie was determined to sort out communication with Vidoun directly. It couldn't be his fault that he had that unusual mouth arrangement, and speaking for herself, she had to imagine that it was frustrating not to be able to articulate one's own thoughts directly.Her own words could often flow a mile a minute, so if she was dependent on Shambles to speak for her...
Well, she'd probably be a lot more censored, she had to admit with a rueful smile. Maybe that would be good, sometimes. But not always, and she loved being able to speak her mind. So, even if Vidoun was not capable of literally speaking for himself, he obviously had his own way of communicating and she could respect that. Chain could interpret his behaviors, and she had confidence that she could manage as well!
Though the problem with non-verbal communication, particularly between Soquili who didn't know each other very well, was there was a lot of room for error. And when Vidoun responded to her explanation of the 'sneaky' problem with what seemed to be laughter, her hackles promptly started to raise. She was a good-natured mare, yes, but she took her goals and ambitions very seriously. No one, mare, stallion, bear, mongoose, was going to make light of her dreams, and the surest way to earn her ire was to belittle them. She was about to tell Vidoun that in no uncertain terms when the chuckling was followed up by further activity; head nodding, gesturing, looking down, looking off in the distance...
Obviously there was more to the story than she had originally interpreted, and her hackles went back down. However, she had to color herself thoroughly confused. What had all that pointing and gesturing meant, exactly? Her mouth twisted to the side slightly, and she cocked her head at Vidoun for a long silent moment before sighing. "I'm sorry, I really didn't get that at all, Vidoun. Would you mind starting over with that thought? I'm not sure if you were trying to say I'm an idiot, or that you're completely unstealthy, or that there's something or someone over there that CAN be stealthy, or that we ought to go over there and I'll become stealthy..."
She broke off, shaking her head once more and giving him an apologetic look. "As you might have guessed, I'm overly fond of verbal communication. But if you just bear with me for a while, I'm sure I'll get this non-verbal thing sorted out!"
Vidoun blinked at her, his eyes flickering along her form. He could almost see the irritation forming. And for a moment, he panicked. But then he brushed it off, and merely relaxed. She seemed to be confused by what he was trying to say; and that was common. Almost everyone he "spoke" to without Chain's help got confused. And because of that, it made him more irritated and socially awkward. He paused for a moment, staring down at his hooves and debated on going. Obviously this wasn't going well. He sighed some, blowing air from his nose quickly before looking down at the ground. This wasn't going to work.. he had insulted her already; and that was never a good sign. He lifted a hoof, as if preparing to walk off, before she spoke.
The stallion's head lifted, and he locked his gaze on the mare. Robbie was talking so quickly. His ears snapped up, and he stared at her with an intense gaze. After a few moments, and her finally stopping her quick speech, he calmed down. So she wanted to understand him. It almost made him smile, if his mouth could turn properly. He dipped his head down some, nodding as best as he could, before lifting his hoof. He hit the ground once, making a loud thump noise, before shaking his head quickly, saying her first thought was false. He then hit the ground twice, and shook his head again, then three times, again, his head shook. When he tapped tapped his hoof four times, he nodded some, and pointed with his nose toward the trees once more, his body turning that way.
Hoping she understood, Vidoun grunted, before he moved forward. He was slow, his hooves pressing against the ground gently, as if testing the spot under him for branches or rough leaves, before settling down onto the ground. He moved forward and into the trees, before pausing. His hoof came down over a branch, lowering slowly, before there was a small creek noise of his weight straining the wood. He stopped how he was, lifting his hoof back up before the branch snapped, and lowering it down a little bit ahead of it so it remained quiet. He glanced over his shoulder toward Robbie, nodding for her to follow; to mimic him. It was slow moving, and often times could put them in more danger if they weren't aware of their situation, but it was the best way to move if one wanted to be stealthy and quiet. Or at least, that was how he was taught.
