I remembered what it was I was thinking of in chatterbox earlier (On occasion it can take time, I get distractable while ranting) - an anime game with both sci-fi AND midevil themes merged with philosophy and platonic romance (a love of a brother for his sister), as well as beings from the edge of space and time attempting to devour the universe...
Chrono Trigger (Less Chrono Cross but it's still a great game too if it's all you can find)
Naturally this includes other similar dimension and/or time travel related themes - an entirely original plot with it's own species, peoples and places that features a degree of time travel is just as desirable.

Time travel can get so messy, but I do love the idea. Would it be a linear timeline, with the past changing the future? Or would the changes made in the past spin off into alternative timelines and leave a bread crumb of changes?

Well, the way that Chrono Trigger managed time traveling to the past was such that only relatively close points in time impacted other on small scales (major things were somewhat set points in time - like the events of the city of Zeal - see spoiler at the end if you don't know the game and don't plan to play it) - things like finding a ghost in the present of a tragic death would let you go back in time to prevent the fellow from dying and thus his ghost wouldn't be found there.
There is of course exceptions like a quest involving saving a plant in anciemt history to make a forest in the present day.
You can do similarly with artifacts that power up over time (including an object called the Sunstone which required like 67000+ years to be useful)...
Points in time where the timeline actually shatters thoigh are actually addressed in Chrono Cross (the sequel) - it results in duplicate worlds with everything the same except for the changes made to history (and the resulting consequences)
It should of course be noted that the time rifts in the game only bring you to a generic section of the era (IE if it was Saturday in your home time and you spend a day in the past it would then be Sunday at your home time)
The city of Zeal is destroyed by the ancient entity from beyond time and space (Lavos) when he briefly wake early from his slumber in the center of the world - this event is a fixed point because by the time anyone with enough knowledge of the scenario arrives on the scene the events have already been set in motion.
Well you are in luck because I adore chrono trigger and I spent a month or so last year kicking around a time travel system ^-^
I can pull it off but wouldn't you like to take the reins? its your idea? Ill do it if you want or back off if you desire.

I have no problem with playing support - if you have a system already it makes sense to use it; I'm fine with stepping aside from host as long as I get a spot in the roster.
systems only 30% done I had to work on it on top of many many other things I have a general idea but you may find it lack luster.
I can't even explain it properly >.<
