Indexing had once been a rare treat when patrolling and hunting, but now that it was the majority of her knights out and powered, Zia had decided the absolutely boring nature of the endeavor was killing her softly.

The fishing trap, while effective and facilitated meeting several interesting people, didn't involve much action on her part besides powering up to her humanoid form, cat ears and all, and simply leaking energy all over the place until someone showed up.

It wasn't exactly an action packed adventure or thrilling danger, especially when she had ingratiated herself to all four factions as totally nonthreatening and very valuable alive, which meant only the most Chaotic and violent even bothered being hostile.

Tonight the boredom came and it wasn't much different than before. She was having trouble saying in one place, which defeated the purpose and made her a little more difficult to find, but she was so fidgety she couldn't handle anything less than wayward wandering around the park's landscaping.

Some days, patrolling the city for monsters was an absolute mess. They seemed to roam freely, and Hvergelmir had come across more than one on a few occasions, and been forced to use her magical strength and her poor distaff to beat them into dust before they faded away. It was as though the police somehow couldn't see them, prowling for people to eat -- or, she suspected, in her more cynical moments, they simply pretended not to.

And how could Hvergelmir blame them? She might have been given a magical consitution suitable for tangling with monsters, but all Destiny City's cops had were badges, nightsticks, and kevlar vests. They kept the peace and tried to make it through life long enough to collect their pensions. Monster fighting wasn't something they'd signed up for.

Neither did I, she thought, a small, rebellious feeling wriggling its way to the fore of her mind. But that sort of thought was something the counselor at the free clinic told her was "destructive" -- dwelling on circumstances beyond her control and using them as a justification to abdicate any responsibility for her mental state would not make her any happier. I should go back and tell him that the circumstances beyond my control have claws and teeth now, and they try to kill me, she thought. Hvergelmir wondered if any other senshi or knights had tried to seek counseling, or what they'd said about all the nights when they wandered the streets and the monsters came.

Other nights, though, the city was quiet -- as though the dark beasts that prowled the streets had all been a figment of her imagination, or had gone into hibernation to hide from the cold. She envied them their self-determined schedule. She wished it were posted somewhere, though, so she didn't waste her time.

Tonight was shaping up to be like that. The worst she'd had to deal with were more of the usual -- people asking her what party she'd just come from dressed up so formally, and her having to make up a suitable answer.

That was... until she felt the naggling pull of something with a very large, very weird aura.

She followed it to a nearby park. It didn't feel the way youma and Negaversers felt, not exactly, but it wasn't like senshi or knights, either -- not exactly. It felt like -- a third thing.

What it looked like was a cat girl. Well, then.

Hvergelmir approached with caution, her experiences with Negaversers having taught her to take care when meeting new people (or cat people, as the current case might be). She called out while she was still far enough away to make a clean break for it if she decided she needed to run -- but she hoped this wasn't going to be yet another person with another unclear reason for wanting her dead. Surely some people in this world were willing to just talk... right?

"Hello? Are you... " She paused. She had no idea what to end that sentence with. 'A Negaverser?' 'A senshi?' What if the cat girl was insulted? But 'what are you?' couldn't be much better than that, either. "... Are you... magical?" she phrased it vaguely.

Ears perked when a page's aura came into her sensory vision. While her tail swayed and bristled with excitement, the Mauvian did her best not to exhibit any bounce off the walls tendencies.

The sudden giddiness of finding someone new who could offer new information was palpable, but needed to be controlled, because she had too much experience with people fleeing in the other direction. Which, from an outsider's perspective, was totally understandable when an unknown agent with unclear affiliation was bounding at you with too much enthusiasm. But from Zia's perspective she was being a wonderful social butterfly, facilitating connectivity and information and was of the mind people should stop running away from her.

Social nuances were hard.

When she spun on her heel and saw the flowing dress and star motif she didn't immediately think 'knight'-- not in traditional or magical war context-- but this the first time she'd seen a Cosmos knight up close and that last glimpse was ages ago.

Everything from the way she slightly leaned forward to the way the fuzzy ears on her head twitched screamed curiosity, but she was good, and kept her normally wandering hands that had a tendency to grab and poke tightly restrained by one another behind her back.

She would've greeted her with an introduction. She had several that were sounding more and more rehearsed the longer her index project went on. But she was hit with a question before she could mentally file through and locate a speech.

... Are you... magical?

Unable to resist, one corner of her mouth formed a crooked grin of concentrated smugness and she laughed.

"I am pretty ******** magical," She announced. "I'm also a guardian cat. Are you a page? Your aura says one thing but the uniform is a bit of a departure."

A guardian cat. Tara had mentioned those... right? Magical cats who were like nannies to the senshi, sometimes -- it was just...

Laney had expected actual cats. Actual talking cats were somehow more logically reasonable in her mind than cat-people, evidently. Sometimes Laney really had no idea how her mind worked.

Guardian cats were presumably affiliated with senshi, then. They presumably weren't going to try and kill her at first sight like the Negaversers were trained to do. That was a relief.

The guardian cat seemed anxious, or agitated, maybe -- but hopefully not intent on any harm. Hvergelmir drew closer. She'd had too many bad connections, lately; she was feeling desperate to put something in the win column.

"Hvergelmir Page of the Cosmos," she introduced herself, holding out a hand. "I'm so sorry, I've never met a guardian cat before. I had no idea -- it was kind of a dumb question, right?" Hvergelmir shrugged, with a tiny laugh at her own expense. "What's your name?"

The hand was taken with enthusiasm, but she didn't release it and instead, she used the new grip to pull her a bit closer.

"Not really. Like I said, I am pretty magical," She grinned, not letting the page's hand go free until she had completed the gesture with a blatant wink to make it clear the sarcastic reply was not referencing 'magical' quite in the way the page meant it.

A Cosmos page, though. What a find. Her index was heavy with Earth and Saturn knights, with Jupiter trailing behind, but Cosmos didn't have a complete entry yet. Only a vague idea that they existed and glimpses and glances at a distance. Tara's mysterious knight was Cosmos, but Tara was a touchy subject and refused to let her see her besides.

"It's okay, I'm kind of nonstandard as guardians go," She offered, still all smiles, but softer this time and obviously trying to make up for the earlier sarcasm. "There's no such thing as dumb questions!"

Even if the question of her name was tricky. Zee was borrowing Zirconia's powers these days, but Zirconia was the identity that came with these powers. Order was granted more honesty, she decided after hesitation, and shifted down to her civilian form, giving up her pretty dress for ratty jeans and holding out her arms as if it was grand presentation.

"You can just call me Zee! Part time guardian of the Black Moon."

She had to match the title introduction.

Hvergelmir blinked, seeing the cat girl transform down into -- a regular human being, sans cat ears and tail. She supposed that was less odd than the notion of her transforming into a cat, if only just.

"Isn't that dangerous?" she asked. "Showing me who you are in the everyday world? What if I wanted to hurt you, or... or someone you knew?"

She sat down on a park bench, studying Zee, the sometimes guardian cat. "What makes you different? If -- if you don't mind my asking. What's the Black Moon? I'm sorry," she apologized again -- profuse apologies being Laney's, and thus also Hvergelmir's, default setting, "I don't even really understand what a guardian cat does. If that's too many questions, I can... I'm sorry. It's a little hard to get answers around here sometimes, I don't mean to come on so strong. It's really nice to meet you, Zee."

"Oooh, are you dangerous?" Zee said with completely over the top facetiousness as she looked around and then covered her gaping mouth in shock. "I must've missed the memo," She added, shifting back to her natural smirking resting face and giving a wide armed shrug.

"The Black Moon is a court from another universe. Your court isn't mine, this isn't my war; I don't claim any of these armies. If an individual is dangerous, there's not much I can do, can I? I mean I'm just a cat."

She casually rested her arms in her sweater pocked and rolled on the heals of her sneakers. "You don't seem that dangerous, and I can't imagine why you'd hunt me down, so there."

That little episode out of the way, she took the time to consider the confused page's questions, finally, and decided the 'what is the Black Moon' had been answered well enough, even as vague as that information had been. "I'm different because I can go full human? But I think that's because I wasn't always a cat. ********* said there's another one like me, but hell, I've never met him. Guardian cats are guidance counselors and information hubs for senshi. Or corrupted senshi, as the case may be for corrupted cats."

Hvergelmir frowned, folding her arms petulantly. Her irritation wasn't so much for Zee, but for the situation itself, a situation which had been making her miserable for weeks now. "This isn't my war either," she insisted, "And I can't imagine why people would hunt me down, either. But they do. You're lucky not to be involved."

Her face fell. "I don't understand anything. I guess we don't get guardian cats. Or a memo," she snorted. "Or even a fruit basket would be nice. A help desk? A call center? I started asking CleverBot things a few weeks ago, just in hopes somebody else had decided to teach it about us, but I guess no one else was as desperate as I was."

Hvergelmir paused in her moping, interrupted by a sudden thought. "Wait... did you say another universe? Like, as in, another reality, like you fell through a wormhole or something? Or like someone summoned you here against your will or something, like conjuring a shoggoth?"

To be fair, Zee had very little in common with a shoggoth.

"Well that would probably be because you're of a similar species, but lacking Chaos. Negaverse officers minus Chaos equals knight. You're their bread and butter for recruitment or war fodder, it's incredibly unfortunate," Zia rambled off, giving a plastic and stiff pat to the poor girl's shoulder.

"Oh don't be so dramatic. You have me!" An egotistical, but genuinely made statement.

"U-uh..." Shoggoth harkened back to Zee's childhood of ferreting away her father's old copies of serials and novellas, so hearing the reference threw her for a minor loop she had to shake off and then laugh.

"Not really. It's complicated. Mirror people and stuff, it's not important."

It just about stretched the limits of Laney's capacity for taking social cues to be able to recognize that the issue of Zee's mysterious extraterrestrial origins was not a welcome subject. As it was, rather than politely closing the book on it forever, as a respectful person might do, Hvergelmir just tabled the question of how Zee had come to be here to be pried into another time. Hvergelmir didn't lack for the ability to be off-puttingly socially graceless even in important situations -- but in this case it took a backseat to the rather more selfish curiosity she had about things that had more to do with herself.

Showing her near-total ignorance of everything she'd gotten herself into (or, to be fair to herself, everything she'd been roped into), she launched right into a question so basic that even she could tell that Zee perceived it to be Magic 101 fare.

"What do you mean by Chaos?" she put it to her, obliviousness showing on her face.

Zia stopped and stared a Hvergelmir long and silently before she broke the blank stance with a wide armed shrug and an "Eh?!"

She wasn't sure she'd ever come across someone who was newbish enough to not at least have a good grasp on Chaos and how it was bad.

"Okay," She said, brow knitted in a permanent state of confusion, although the rest of her seemed to have carried on. "You met any Negaverse officers or corrupted senshi yet? That might be a good place to start, I mean the auras are kind of... a give away?"

Hvergelmir didn't know many other senshi or knights, and the ones she'd met had focused primarily on practical information -- how to deal with the circumstances that existed, rather than why those circumstances existed or, really, what the heck they were. No one had painted a clear picture of how things had come to be this way. Some of them, she was sure, didn't even know. Did Zee?

"Yeah, I've met... a couple of Negaverse soldiers. They feel -- I guess, different. And monsters too, but they're, like, a different different. I don't know about any corrupted senshi." She frowned, wondering if Zee was expecting her to gist something from that. "Do you mean they've been... uh, kind of... poisoned?"

"Well Chaos is a tangible infection," Zia stated, sliding slowly into know-it-all mode as Hver said enough that make her go yes, you have enough basic information for me to talk at you.

"The monsters are negligible. Tools of Chaos but not its soldiers, see," She powered up to her humanoid cat-girl form and invasively pressed two fingers to where she was certain Hver's starseed resided in her chest. "Chaos infects you to your very core, you see. It breaks the bond you have with your wonder and feeds you power in exchange for your humanity. It's a slow price, and it doesn't seem like much at first. But as you go on, further and further, it collects its debt."

She retracted her hands and her smile took on an awkward flavor.

"If you strike a deal with one of its agents with the ability to spread and infect, you wouldn't be a knight anymore, you would completely transform and become one of them. When senshi corrupt they turn into different sorts of senshi. But the main power source that feeds and drives them is a sickness. It's Chaos."

Hvergelmir nodded, trying to process this -- an infection like dementia, eating away at the mind, taking a little more each day. The Negaversers she'd met -- they'd be even worse now? Even more merciless? It got worse?

"Is there a vaccine?" she asked. "Is there a cure? If it can be done, can it be undone?"

"Well yeah," She laughed with a flippant handwave and then remembered Hver was a new baby page and she was being just a little bit rude.

Just a little.

"I mean, Order is the natural... order," She stopped and knitted her brow, looking up as she mentally pondered what an absolutely terribly executed sentence that was. And then shook it off.

"It's easier when they're newer, as they go up in rank their infection gets worse and the Chaos permeates their starseed to a greater extent. I think you do reach a point where it becomes unsalvageable, or maybe by then they're a youma. I don't know know. But most of them can be, I think!" She nodded, obviously enthusiastic about the prospect.

"Basically when they want to quit they gotta go find a senshi royal or a knight with a crystal sword, and they can fix them right up with some seriously trippy crystal power."
