It was all changing. The world was going from a long hibernation into what could only be described as life. The snow had all melted ( save for the tops of the mountains where it lingered for the entire year ) and the grass was beginning to turn that lush green color that every herbivore loved so much. The trees were starting to grow new leaves, and flowers were beginning their ascent into turning into buds to make life and color known in all the lands. Mammals were waking from their sleep, moving around quietly and carefully as predators realized that the winter was over. Oh yes, the time of little food and managing food intake was over. Predators were out, picking off the weak, those who had just awoken from their first winter and did not know the dangers of waking from their slumbers.
It was in the forests northwest that the mare awoke. She had found herself a tree positioned on a hill. The roots grew over and onto the side of the hill; and in that, made a small hide away within the roots. She had dragged furs and branches down into the alcove, making herself a home within the tree. It was well hidden, and she could protect the territory she had claimed very easily. The tree that lingered above her was starting to spring to life, leaves turning soft green as they began to grow. The noises of animals coming to life caused the mares ears to perk, her nose twitching with smells that she hadn’t smelt in a year invading her nose. After a moment, red eyes snapped open, and a small growl slipped from her throat.
Hresvelgr, a creature born of wolf and bird blood, moved carefully out of her small home. Her paws pushed away leaves and branches, bones and fur, as she stood. She flexed her toes and claws, letting out a long yawn, her head dipping down as she did so, tongue slipping out. Her fangs glinted lightly in the light, before she snapped her mouth closed and perked her ears, eyes half open. She looked around for a moment, tail giving a small flick before laying in soft layers down along her flank. Her wings were large, even folded against her back as they were. The eyes that were at the folds were closed, refusing to open. She shook out her fur and feathers easily, before stretching as best as she could, a few of her bones letting out small popping noises as she did so. She looked around curiously, before realizing she was hungry; a slight uncomfortable feeling in her stomach.
The wolf let out a growl, before shaking out her body once more. She needed to find something to eat. Though this was her first year living on her own away from her father, she knew she would be able to survive. She was a tough mare, and had her instincts in the right spot. She let out a huff, looking around, before moving forward slowly. Her paws pushed away dirt and grass as she moved through the forest, sniffing the air and searching quietly. As she looked around, she noted a few differences in the world around her. Holes were dug around the trees, things were moved from where she had seen them before; such as branches and even some leaves that hadn’t been eaten yet. She lowered her head toward one of the holes, sniffing quietly for a moment, before looking up and around her. A squirrel. It wasn’t a large breakfast, by any means, but it would be enough to satisfy her hunger until she could find something bigger.
Hresvelgr started on the trail, her nose staying low to the ground and her eyes scanning. Her ears swiveled as she hunted, listening for the sounds of the animals. Eventually, the smell became rather strong, and she paused to look around just in case she was close. She searched the area for the squirrel, her nose twitching some, before she smirked, wings shifting along her back. She could see the small rodent curled up with some acorns, biting at it and trying to break open the nut. Apparently it was hungry too. She shifted carefully, moving so slow it was as though she wasn’t moving at all. Her paws were silent against the ground as she stalked the rodent. After a moment, she sprang. Her paws touched the ground twice, and only for a few seconds, before she was upon the rodent. Her jaws snapped closed on her prey’s neck, fangs piercing deep into the muscle. Blood flooded her mouth for a moment, and she drank it down quickly, before releasing the dead creature.
She was an expert hunter. Hresvelgr could track anything, and was great at doing kill hits. She looked around for a moment, as though debating on whether she should take her breakfast elsewhere or eat here. Baring her fangs for a moment, she huffed, and ruffled her feathers. Yes. She could eat here. Dipping her head down, the wolf sniffed at her food, before she began to eat, ripping off bits of food and swallowing them quickly. Her tail gave a small flick behind her, and at one point, she had to press her paw down on the fluffy tail, so that she didn’t ingest some of the fluff. She had made that mistake before, and it was painful enough to have to cough that up. She was getting so much into her meal, that the world around her was distant, her mind away from watching out for anything that could be around her.

Spring, the mud and soft ground made things hard for the stallion, if you wanted to call him that, hated this time of year. The mud stuck to his talons and was a pain to wash off. Shaking one foot before shaking the other, trying to dislodge chunks of the gunk from between his toes, gods this was annoying! Opening his black, white and red pigmented wings, the Gryph leaped into the air, at least a foot or so above the wet earth and land on a stone where he was free from the mess. Shaking a foot again, he glared down with blood colored eyes. This was NOT the start of a good hunting trip.
Checkmate had thought the forests were a great place to come and hunt. Wrong thinking, seriously wrong thinking. The Gryph was a creature that hunted in open areas, he didn't care much for these closed in, trees so tight he couldn't fly places. Snorting to himself, he hopped to another stone, hind hooves clopping against the hard surface as his talons scratched the stone. Leaving behind scars in the stone that would be worn away in time when the rain poured. But no rain was to come today, he didn't want it to rain, this land was miserable enough as it was.
So this is what he did with the most of his time, hopping from one hard surface to another, his wings flicking out at times when he didn't think he was going to make it. Checkmate searched for solid ground, away from the muck that would gum up his talons, his killing weapons. Something else caught his attention, something moved in the distance. He wasn't sure what it was, slipping, noisily, off his perch and back into the much, the stallion followed the tan/cream colored body. Talons once more making puck marks in the ground, the stalker slunk along not far from the critter. He found that it was as large as he was, so it made for poor hunting, he hated taking down large prey. Too much work, this made him groan inwardly, eyes rolling backwards as his interest was all but lost.
With the flurry of movement and the scent of blood that followed, this brought back what little interest there was and the hunter once more headed forwards. Crouching behind a bush, the horrorbird spied the strange mare as she picked at the small carcass that had once been a mere rodent. A loud half snort, half laugh came from his gut and out a barely parted beak. This was the best the mare could do? The was wracked with laughter, on the inside, head shaking. He could do loads better, but this brought to his twisted mind the thought that this mare might not be all that old after all. Hackles tightening, Checkmate stalked closer, the bushes barely moving in his passing, the only thing to give way his position were the red markings on his feathers.
He now had a target, he just had to find a way to take it.

Hres very easily nibbled at her food. Her tail flicked lightly behind her, falling in strands rather gentle. Her eyes closed lightly as she pulled some meat from the bone, scarfing down the food easily. It was simple. Most things were simple. Eat, sleep, hunt, repeat. Her large ears flicked lightly to the side, before she pinned them back against her head. Her wing shifted a bit, folding easily against her back. The eyes opened, looking around curiously as she ate. They seemed to keep an eye out for her; protecting her and alerting her if something was near by. She easily enjoyed the food, pulling her head back for a moment to look around. Blood covered her muzzle, her eyes searching the area. Her ears flicked once more, before she huffed and ducked her head back down to continue eating.
That was when something alerted her. More importantly, alerted the eyes lingering at the fold of her wings. One of the eyes quickly looked over to the side, before blinking several times. It sent an image to Hres' mind, alerting her instantly. Her wings flared out, and she lifted her head and snapped it to the side to stare toward the forest trees. A low growl began to form in her throat, the fur on her neck and back standing up slightly. Her wings beat a few times, the eyes on the corners closing from the wind. She backed away from the meal, turning her body to stare into the woods, red eyes locked on the trees.
It was rather easy for the wolf to spot the bird. The bright red feathers that lingered on him were practically a beacon of light. She shifted on her paws, flexing claws and toes as she stared directly at him. Her ears pinned back lightly as she flicked her tail behind her again. She dipped her head down dangerously, snarling low in her throat, her wings shifting to splay out beside her, making her seem a lot bigger than she actually was. Her fur was still on edge, and her fangs bared to the bird. She didn't speak, didn't move. Just stood there, growling and holding her stance.Kesmi [ Sorry it took so long dear! ]
