The forest was a dark and dreary place. Even with the sun out and bright all day, there was practically a canopy covering hiding the light from the ground. You were lucky if there were splatters of sunlight here and there. Bird calls seemed to stop the farther you went in. It was eerie, even. Standing in the clearing beyond and looking towards the path going on and through, it seemed like it trailed into utter darkness. An open mouth of darkness, waiting for the naive traveler to enter and be eaten alive.

Hero didn't care, and had stomped all the way through it until the late noon. She squinted in the remaining light, her eyes not prepared for the great change ahead. The forest ended so suddenly for her, she almost reared back at how startlingly bright it was out in that big world. Her ears flicked instead. She looked out at the clearing ahead. It would be a change of pace, if nothing else. She would be able to trust the grass there. More so than this strange place. Before that, however...
She turned towards one of the lingering trees, one of the sentry guards of this big looming glade, and reared up. She pounced on it, and once with a sure grip, started loudly sharpening her claws.

It might not have been the most tactical approach. Chirping birds flew off, rabbits froze, and mice fled at the noise. Any easy prey was scared and gone. From the look on the half-grpyh's face, she didn't seem to care. But then she always seemed a little grumpy, even from the first look.
