“Alright, is everyone listening?” B’tes scanned the small crowd of weyrlings, his smile bright - even if underneath he was a little concerned that, well, some of them might not be ready to go…
Sekimith reassured him, the brown sat upright behind his rider in best drill-sergeant pose, <…or I’ll push them. One of the two>
“I want to remind you that you riders are staying up here! Your dragons are not yet big enough to bear your weight, and anyone I see trying to ride will find themselves on some very unpleasant duties that I will make up specifically for them. Consider yourselves warned. All this is is a short glide to the bottom of the bowl, and please don’t try anything more showy - just jump, spread your wings, glide. If you panic, there will be a dragon there to catch you”
He’d borrowed a couple of first wing’s bronzes for the task, in fact - better safe then sorry, because… well, because they lost enough weyrlings, best to do everything he could to keep his boys and girls safe. The top of the weyrbowl to the bottom was a long way to such small dragons, and perhaps he should have begun with somewhere smaller but…
“Alright. In your own time, and one by one!”

If you feel up for it, roll a dice for your flight success. You may choose a ‘bad’ result without rolling it, but not a ‘good' one.
1. You took too long. Sekimith pushes you off of the weyrbowl. GO GO GO. 2. How do wings work?!?! You panic and have to be rescued. 3. Well, you’re kind of perfect. You glide beautifully down to the bottom of the bowl. 4. Fly, my pretties, fly! You nearly crash into another weyrling in mid-air. Shouldn’t you be going one by one? 5. You do beautifully until you hit a bush at the bottom. 6. On-lookers (and bet-makers) scatter as you come to ground with a thump where they were a moment before.

They were ready.
No doubt about it, there was no fear present in either Miskael or Descanth: the piebald green's eyes were a positively brilliant shade of sapphire blue, whirling rapidly with anticipation. She flexed her wings and forelegs, shaking out the muscles in her deep chest, then turned that jewel-bright gaze onto her rider.
I can do this, Miskael. Shall I go?
He grinned up at her and leaned up to clap her on a sleek shoulder. "You got this. Go show 'em how it's done."
Being small would be a disadvantage in some ways; when it came time for manned flights, even Miskael's lean body would be more of a burden on her than it could ever be on the larger browns and bronzes, who would barely feel their riders' weight. But for today, being the smallest and most agile color could work to her favor. When B'tes called the "go", Descanth stepped up, not bounding forth like an over-eager puppy, but with calm and steady purpose. Like she meant it. The little green bobbed her head in polite acknowledgement to the First Wing bronzes standing by on safety duty, then turned to face forward again.
Then with a little hopskip and a quick surge forward, she was off and over the edge. Miskael momentarily felt his stomach drop in time with hers as gravity kicked in - but her wings were already unfurling, catching the air, holding her. The greenweyrling let out a whoop that was echoed by his dragon's triumphant bugle.
Look! Oh, look! I'm -awk!
The thought was cut off in an ungainly squawk of dismay. Descanth had turned her head unthinkingly to look back up at the ledge and her clutchmates behind her, and in doing so she'd taken her eyes off the Bowl. Overshooting her intended landing spot, she went tumbling headlong into a patch of shrubbery.

Lanakirene was many things. Fearful was not one of them.
She grinned as she shifted from foot to foot next to Isonth, one hand squeezing her dragon's neck lightly. Isonth crooned, twisting her head to butt gently against her rider's hip as B'tes gave his explanation.
You okay, sweetheart? A single quick question from Lanakirene, who was watching B'tes intently. Isonth, attention already distracted by handsome First Wing bronzes, cocked her head to one side and crooned.
Of course. Descanth was going first. That was very much like her, and Isonth's tail thrashed in delight as she watched the first green go, eyes a whirling cacophony of greens and blues. Descanth was gliding, going so well - tangling with a bush!?
The alarmed squawk left the green the second her clutchmate got tripped up, and Isonth launched herself from the ledge immediately, concern for a clutchmate overriding any lingering anxiety there may have been about flight. She gave a little warble of delight as the air caught her wings, thrashing her tail and twisting in an attempt to angle in the same direction Descanth had gone. From her place on the ledge, Lanakirene watched with an expression of fond surprise. "...that's my girl," she murmured to no one in particular.
Descanth! Descanth, are you all right? were the first words she called as she hit the ground uncharacteristically gracefully for her odd, lanky body, turning the forward momentum of the glide into a canter and jogging immediately over to her clutchmate. Are you hurt? she asked, nosing the other patchy green, eyes whirling anxious yellow.

Usually Bereck didn't go out to see the weyrlings take their first glide; the physical humour of young dragons flailing around in the air that apparently enthralled so many was lost on him. Oh he always knew when it was of course; he and the other healers who had anything at all to do with dragons were warned just in case of crashes, sprains, scratches and so on.
This clutch however was not like other clutches.
Standing in the weyrbowl in the ragged front rank of the knots of spectators Bereck shielded his eyes with his free hand and peered up at the class, seeking a pair of large solid figures. Somehow he doubted that Kyoth would be at the front of the line.

Sanuyeth watched, eyes half lidded as the lesson began and dragon after dragon took their turns. Some jumping, other's running, and a few being shoved by the Weyrlingmaster's dragon. Jasiline had commentary on each of them and the pair was having a surprisingly good time watching the chaos.
One dragon right before them had attempted to leap out from the cliff edge and fouled their jump, plummeting straight down before they got their wings in order. Sanuyeth snorted. Embarassing.
Think you can do better?
I know I can do better. Sanuyeth gave her rider a withering glare before rising to her feet and without a moment's hesitation, she charged the ledge, leaping into the air and snapping her wings open the moment she was airborn. Told you. Sanuyeth's head twisted around to try and spot her rider above her as she glided down.
Look out!
The green hissed as she came up on the male who had jumped before her. What was he doing in her way?! SHE was flying here! Sanuyeth's wings flailed as she twisted away from a collision, slashing at the air between them with her claws. She managed to right herself, just barely and made a rough, bouncing landing close to the gathered crowd. A loud snarl was aimed up at the other dragon who had got in her way.

Kialynka had heard people talking about it all day. The weyrlings were going to practice flying today. All of the weyrfolk were talking about it. It could be fun to go watch the floundering weyrlings. When she finally found out the time she glanced at her remaining work. Nah she wanted to go watch. Setting aside her work tools, the teen slunk off. Not overly hard in the busy Weyr.
She peeked out of the shadows. There they were. A green took off. She looked to be doing well until she tried to look back. Kia snickered as the green went into a bush. Who was next?

<No. I will not. It can only end in tears and ->
This toddler-like argument between Rensoua and her bulky brown was interrupted by a not-so-gentle nudge from Sekimith’s tail that sent Kyoth toppling unexpectedly from the edge of the bowl into empty space with a squeal of surprise. There was a breathtaking moment of freefall - which made Rensoua’s heart skip a beat - before the dragonet’s enormous wings snapped out, straining for a moment before they bore his considerable weight.
<…oh> Kyoth sounded more then a little surprised, as though he had just now figured out what the huge things were for, which was entirely possible. At least for once they were in good repair: the young dragon had tripped over his own wings or his over-sized feet more then once, and the membrane already had a few lines of scar tissue. His rider peered over the edge, watching him spiral very gently down - until he flubbed the landing, tripping over as he came in too hard and falling on his face.
Well, you couldn’t have everything.

Was not the turn of phrase you wanted to hear in mid air, especially not when the subject was We have no idea what we're doing. The small, enthusiastic blue had launched himself with a zeal that matched Aldrey's level of fear at the entire lesson, his whipping tail taking his partner with him, and if Aldrey himself could be credited with not screaming, it was mostly because he was too busy being locked in frozen terror as 'learning to glide' turned out to be 'falling like squishy bags of fragile meat and bone', and there were several heartbeats of pure unbridled terror and certainty that the two large bronzes waiting to prevent 'accidents' would fail, and then an abrupt change in momentum, which for a moment he thought had to do with the ground, but in fact, was salvation. Pippith, safe in the grip of the other bronze, was silent for another beat or two as they were winged to safety (where his fears could turn to shaking limbs and humiliation at the giggles of others.) Then the spritely spotted blue burst in with an shaky, adrenaline fueled whoop into his thoughts. LETSDOITAGAIN.> < ((whimper)) We're going to have to I'm sure... >

Descanth blinked up at her clutchmate, who was… curiously upside-down.
No, wait. She was upside-down. Isonth was right-side up. With a great twist of her body she rolled herself back so her feet were under her, then sprang back up. Quick check: all four limbs accounted for, wings still bending and stretching properly? Yes? She was fine, then, apart from the expected bumps and scrapes. Hardly worth mentioning.
I’m just fine, Isonth. No harm done – although I think my dignity and this bush may have both taken fatal injuries. Descanth’s mindvoice sounded a little abashed, almost rueful as she craned her neck to look back up at the top of the Weyrbowl.
Do you think they’ll give everyone a chance at a second try? I’m sure I could stick the landing if I did it again...

When he saw the familiar pale brown shape drop off the ledge his heart seemed to skip a beat and although he knew that this was not actually the case it didn't made much of a difference until Kyoth's huge wings unfurled to turn the plunge into a glide. An uncharacteristic grin spread across Bereck's face as the young dragon spiralled downward and he raised to fingers to his lips to give a sharp whistle, his contribution to the generalized cheers, applause and laughter generated by the crowd.
When the brown finally landed he winced slightly, not the best ending to a nice glide, but as the weyrling didn't seem to be hurt he stayed where he was and looked back up at the ledge where Rensoua would still be standing. He doubted she would be able to pick him out in the crowd but he had told her that he would be down here, and he trusted that she trusted that.
High up in the sky, above the ledge the weyrlings were dropping off, Berath enjoyed the sight of the youngsters first flight. Unlike her bondmate she did turn out every time to see them but this clutch was indeed special, well every clutch was special but this one was extra special. she sent to the brown once he had recovered from his faceplant.

Kia moved out further to lean against the wall. She crossed her arms and snickered. They were ungainly things. Certainly nothing like the graceful adults that flew about the planet. They were only children granted, and like any child must learn to walk, or fly in the case. Some certainly took to the air better than others, she noted.
How was it with whers? Did they try to fly or not? Something more to look into with all her free time. The squeal of a brown drew her attention. It looked as a brown had been shoved off the cliff, but managed to get his wings to work. A blue however was not so lucky. He had to be rescued by a large waiting bronze. She laughed at the expression on the unfortunate blue's face. Oh she was so glad she'd come. This was definitely worth the laughs.

Hazmath scrambled over the weyrling bowl, wings flapping in pure enthusiasm, radiating glee.
Brishen looked over the side, watching the slopping bowl.
Hazmath wiggled his tail and rear at the rest of the candidates, prancing a bit. That would be scratchy and ooh look people! Hazmath hunkered down, tail flickering and
He was flying, he was flying. Hazmath bulged slightly, excited as his wings held him up and shifted, pointing right towards the spectators.
Brishen fell over laughing as Hazmath thumped nearly ontop of the crowd, look at them move! Move, you better move!! And then gleefully toddled over and was Hazmath licking somone’s face. He could feel mischievous intent coming from his blue.

Kyoth said, regaining his dignity by sorting himself out and inspecting his various parts to ensure they were still attached. Had he been a cat, he would have been grooming himself in a show of nonchalance - a show not helped by the shower of his siblings around him. Feeling that getting out of the line (or drop) of fire, he padded away towards the crowd, the big brown taking a place amongst them before settling near Bereck to watch his siblings drop.. or in the case of a certain blue, be hauled back up by a bronze overseer.
Rensoua clapped Aldrey on the back with a grin, covering up her own shakes. “No-one’s died yet, mate. Not even your dragon!”
—
L’ris was in her usual fine form, and had a big grin on her face. One of her own squires - well, their dragon - was going over the edge today, and she fully expected them to succeed.
“Two marks on the blue to panic again on the next pass, anyone?”

As the brown settled down near by Bereck (still grinning) observed softly; "You should have seen Berath's first flight." It was one of the few good memories he had from his extended Weyrlinghood, but the memory was no less bright for being surrounded by dull ones.
Berath recalled with a mental laugh once she had located the memory. She didn't really see the need to share the details of the ledge switch with Kyoth - it had just been an observation - but details were important to her healer and so she shared them anyway.

"I'll take that bet," C'tis replied lazily with a smirk. "How about two more for one of the bronzes to crash impressively?" Ah he did love first fight day! "Just fills you with nostalgia and good will to your fellow man seeing the little precious things soar, doesn't it?" he added in tones that even an especially dense toddler would probably have picked up some sarcasm in. "Oh look, there goes another one," the big rider grinned as Hazmath nearly crashed into the throng a short distance away.

"Ha... Ha." Aldrey forced a shaky laugh as Rensoua thumped him on the back, his face as white as a sheet of parchment. "Y-yeah, not yet. L-let's hope it continues in that vein." He shot a look at Pipith, who was shifting weight from foot to foot, his eyes whirling colors with excitement. He could almost feel the plans to try unexpected dives in the future. This was going to have to be... discussed later.
"H-he'll do better next time. And I... I'll stand further back. M-maybe much further." He noted. He did have confidence in Pipith to sort it out, he was just too excited not to, but he wasn't eager to go flinging himself into the sky again any time soon.
