"You know I respect you and your decisions most of the time, and I keep quiet to remain supportive, only voicing quiet concern from time to time. So, I hope you understand when I tell you that I think this is a profoundly stupid course of action?!?"

Frowning, Vanya moved with short, clipped movements, making her preparations without a response to the hovering Mellon. He shifted from irritation to concern again, all too aware that she wasn't listening to him. "Vanya, you know the risk! You've seen what happens first-hand, twice now!" He hesitated at the glare he received in his general direction, then responded with a weary roll of his eyes. "You know what I mean."

Pointedly taking far more care than necessary in placing a stick of incense in a burner, Vanya took a deep breath before replying. "Veryan...you are my friend, and I love you dearly...but I'm doing this whether you like it or not. So either you can shut up and help me, or kindly bugger off." She was taking a measured risk with her statement; he needed to realize she wouldn't be dissuaded and she was getting irritated with him, yet she really did need his help. Or most likely would. She had faith he wouldn't abandon her.

She wasn't disappointed.

"I still think this is stupid," Veryan grumbled, arms crossing over his chest.

"Maybe it is. But I need to know."

"Knowing is overrated," grumped the Mellon in reply, frustrated, but resigned to go along with his bonded's madness.

For the first time during the exchange, a hint of a smile tugged at Vanya's lips. "Perhaps it is." And yet, it didn't stop her search for the truth. Never had, never would.

She had been bothered deeply by the events of the meeting with the Naiad. Of course, it was a fairly eventful day for all, full of alarming revelations and dramatic situations...but something in particular bothered her personally. First, the Naiad Queen, then her Captain: each had experienced their past life's death in a vision, and death had tried to claim them from this life as well. From what she understood from Earthmother, this was a normal reaction of the body to the realistic events of the mind.

She had not shared that she had experienced her own past life's death before. Several times.

Hadn't she?

If she had...why had she not reacted in the same manner? She'd had no idea that she was toying with something so dangerous before...the spirits had simply brought her the visions, she'd not gone looking for them...she could have perished without even knowing or understanding why. But she hadn't.

What made her different? Unless, she'd not actually seen the truth afterall...the visions had proven before that they could be false. Altered memories to serve as a warning or omen instead. Without being able to put her finger on why, she realized that something bothered her about everything she'd believed she'd seen thus far.

She needed answers, no matter what the cost.

She had a secondary reason, more than just mere curiosity or stubbornness. If she was preparing to start a new life, one with her love and soulmate of this life...she needed to understand, to KNOW the truth about how the last one ended. She needed to close that door before she could move on.

Preparations complete, she lit the incense and settled in her seat, taking deep, cleansing breaths to help center herself. "Veryan, I trust you to watch over me while I speak with the spirits," she said calmly. Then, after a moment of hesitation, added, "And if something goes wrong, to get help...okay?" Slowly, she managed to relax with the aid of the soothing scent, drifting away as her eyes closed and her head slumped forwards.

Veryan settled in on a shelf nearby, watching over his bonded with anxiety. She had been so much easier to take care of when she wasn't so strong willed. When all she was worried about was, oh, setting the forest on fire by accident...oh, those were the simple days...

The realm of the spirits could be a strange and unnerving place at best for those not familiar with the way things worked there. Even if one was, there were always surprises waiting around every corner. One could not let their guard down here. Vanya had learned that on her very first trip. Fortunately, she learned quickly, and she had some help. That help was currently perched on her shoulder, crimson eyes scanning the area warily as he always did.

"So you've been lying to me?"

The falcon huffed, shifting his grip on her shoulder. "Name one lie that I told you."

"Fine," Vanya said shortly, irritation showing through. "You were hiding the truth from me."

"I was trying to protect you, foolish girl."

"And what if there's something important that I need to know?" she shot back. Concern was one thing, but she felt as if she were being coddled, treated like a child. He always seemed to talk down to her. At first, she'd acknowledged that she knew little about the spirit world and that she needed all the help that she could get. But now, he was keeping her from her own memories? Well, past life's memories? Why? Did he think that she couldn't handle what she saw? She'd seen so many things by this point, what was one more death, even if it was her own? Well...the Seer of the past.

This still felt confusing at times.

"How much have you kept from me? I thought it seemed pretty clear what happened. If that wasn't a lie, only an omission, then what I saw of the battle seemed pretty final in how it all ended. Even if you kept me from the exact moment of death, what more could there have been?"

The spirit falcon shifted uncomfortably, though at her tone or because of the answer he had to give, it wasn't clear. "What I did was not only to protect you, but others..."

"Tell me."

A weary sigh was the response she received. "Fine." He turned his eyes on her sternly. "...it didn't end there on the battlefield. There was more."

"Let me see it."

"You know what you're asking for, don't you?"

"I do."

"And you're asking anyway? You know what will happen."

"I've taken precautions," she shot back. Granted, she probably could have taken more precautions...like discussing her decision to do this with her mate. And Earthmother. It would have been smarter to have warned them ahead of time. However, she couldn't risk them trying to stop her...and they would, likely with more success than Veryan had had, at least. She needed to do this. She'd just have to ask their forgiveness later.

Silence reigned between the pair for several minutes before the falcon sighed again in resignation. "Foolish girl. Fine, have your memory, uncensored this time. I hope that the information you gain from this is worth the cost." He sounded doubtful.

Vanya only nodded, adding quietly, "Thank you...for everything." Just in case things went badly, she didn't want to part on harsh terms. She really did appreciate her spirit guide's concern...but she couldn't just leave this issue alone. If he knew her as well as she suspected he did, Vanya felt it safe to assume that was why he'd finally caved to her demands. Hopefully, she wouldn't regret this as much as he was implying. Surely he was just overly concerned.

Surely.

The present seemed to slowly dim and fade away. In the distance, growing steadily louder, the sounds of battle reached her ears...

"More fire coming in! Shields, hold the front line!"

Twirling his staff deftly in his hands, the Seer felt the definitive thunk as the weapon came in contact with another, the spinning motion knocking the thrown javelin off-course as he ducked evasively to the other side. He paused behind a line of shieldsmen to catch his breath, turning towards the battlefield. Stretched out before him, the surging energies of the two armies moved like the motion of the sea, rolling first one way, then the other. Amid the two masses of energy, tiny pinpoints of light represented each life, struggling for survival. Sometimes, some would flicker and flare triumphantly, other dimming and going out permanently. A surge of earth energy proceeded the attack from a troop of Geomancers, a flurry of boulders and tiny rock shrapnel sailing into a diving squad of winged Pae from above; another collection of lights extinguished.

As a group of lights on the ground flickered and went out, a thunderous roar tore through the air. A massive figure, appearing to the Seer as a brilliant, glowing light, shook the ground with its strides, coming over the next rise to answer the fallen Faun squadron.

Arda.

The Seer couldn't help but look on proudly, the Faun Chieftain's golem form paying no mind to either arrows, spears, nor fire. His focus was on the remaining Faun troops on the ground and protecting them from the Blood Pae in the skies. No Pae could stand in the way of Arda's fury once roused.

Turning towards the shield force's leader, the Seer regained his hooves and pointed. "We move east to support the central line. The enemy must not break through to the Tree!"

"Aye, sir!" With a sharp salute, the soldier trotted off, spurring his men to action.

Staff in hand, the Seer started to follow when a surge of power from the direction of Laisidhiel sent a shudder through his form. Rather than dread, he turned with hope towards the sight. Earth energy surrounded the Tree like a shield, pure power gathered for a single purpose...to protect the numerous lights that remained safely within. An ear-splitting crack, the ground itself splitting open, as it seemed Laisidhiel herself were about to rise and join the battle. Not exactly the case...though the Tree did rise...taking a massive chunk of the earth with it...into the sky.

She did it! That's my Em! Pride surged in his chest and he wondered for a moment if she could feel it too through their connection. Though he couldn't discern her glowing light from the others still sheltered inside the Tree, it was enough to know that she was there and that she and the rest would be safe, thanks to the sacrifice of their loved ones here still on the ground. It had been hard enough to say goodbye at the time, he hadn't been able to bring himself to share what he knew with her. What else he had Seen this day. He'd made no mention of the tiny spark he'd seen, dim but steady, only beginning to burn with life within that of his treasured soulmate.

May the Earth watch over you and protect you both,' he thought with a mixture of pride and sadness. 'As I fear I will not be able to.' With effort, he tore his attention away from the hovering tree. No more time for personal thoughts. Business yet to be done.

While the Blood Pae had been momentarily startled into silence and awe by the display of pure power, it was not nearly long enough before they had surged forward again, pursuing the Tree into the sky. There remained some archers among Laisidhiel's branches, but they could not counter the entire Blood Pae army. "Don't let them pursue! Bring down the winged ones by whatever means necessary! Drag them down to the earth!" the Seer barked, tossing aside his staff and already starting to change as he moved. The army's job was nearly complete: Keep the Blood Pae from getting to the Tree. Soon, it would be too late for the winged ones to follow or even find the Tree again...if they could just hold them off a bit longer. Then, all the sacrifice wouldn't be for naught.

The Faun drew rocks towards his form like plating, filling in soil between to allow for movement. Like a living suit of armor made of the earth itself, nothing of the Faun could be seen when he was finished, instead replaced by a massive golem, letting out a wordless cry of challenge towards the skies before lifting a boulder and hurling it towards the nearest grouping of lights. He was rewarded with shouts of surprise and dismay as the figures were scattered, some plummeting towards the earth.

Above, a V-shaped formation of angels broke through the defense, rising ane making up distance on the Tree. Surely the archers could take care of them though. Suddenly, there was a surge of earth energy from the sky and the angels began falling as if they'd slammed into a solid wall. Ha ha! The shield was complete! That'd keep those damnable Blood Pae from getting to the Tree! Roaring again in victory, the golem sent a wordless challenge into the skies. Bring the arrows and javelins, even the burning oil; even if they fell, the Faun would not lose this day!

And answer the challenge they did. Following the great cheer from the ground, the air forces turned their fury on the Faun below once more. Their force no longer split, as there was little they could do to get to the Tree now, they were no longer handicapped in dealing with the ground forces. Faun began falling in greater numbers...impaled...burning...lives being extinguished in his Sight. Arda and his Circle were keeping many of the Blood Pae wary and at a distance, but for every Angel or Demon they brought down, it seemed that two or three Faun fell elsewhere. And still they kept coming.

An anguished roar marked the fall of one of the other golems. We have fought well, Brothers. May the Earth give you peace. He couldn't see who it was, but he felt the light extinguished, going out with a brilliant flare, replaced by darkness. Though his body seemed made of inanimate material, he could quite well feel the arrows sticking out of his back, as well as the burning oil splashed over his rocky leg...yet, he pushed on. The Tree could use all the time they could give it, and besides...they were all expendable here on the ground. Might as well take as many of the traitorous winged Pae with them as they could.

Staggering, not for the first time, the golem hit the ground on his knees, rocks and soil falling away from his form. He was losing strength, his shift crumbling as his Faun form returned and became more dominant. Best to die back in his own body if he were going to go. He never knew if it was a shot from a long bow, or thrown javelin. He just felt the impact of the projectile hitting his back, driving him forward onto his hands and knees in the mud and blood. This was it. He cast his gaze upward once more towards the fading glow of Laisidhiel. Goodbye, Emalyn... He slipped forward, splashing into the mud limply. He was fading, he was weak and in pain, but it was okay...they'd succeeded. He barely responded with more than a weak groan when he felt a boot dig into his side.

His hazy brain barely registered that it was a boot, not a hoof.

"Hey! This one's still alive!" he heard a voice shout. Fading now...darkness creeping in all around, the lights of the remaining fighters on the field fading from his Vision. The last thing he noted was the sensation of someone grabbing his hoof and beginning to drag him...somewhere...as the darkness claimed him.

The acrid scent of smoke from burning campfires may have been what woke him. Or maybe it was the lingering pain from his shoulder. Or his leg. Or his ribs.

The most surprising thing was that he hadn't expected to wake again at all. Wasn't he supposed to be dead? He hurt too much to be dead. He was pretty sure being dead wasn't supposed to hurt...or really 'feel' like anything. A groan of protest escaped from his lips as he attempted to move. Not only did most of his body ache at the motion, but he hadn't really succeeded in moving either. Wait...was he upright? His mind was slowly trying to rejoin him in consciousness. He was seated, somewhat uncomfortably, on his knees, a rigid pole at his back holding him upright even when unconscious, as his hands were bound behind it.

No...!

He fought the initial urge to panic and likely hurt himself worse in struggling, focusing instead on getting his Sight to tell him more about where he was. His other senses were still working...he could smell campfire smoke...hear low voices at some distance away, as well as the metallic clank of armor...not Faun armor. The coppery scent and taste of blood hung in the air...of course, that could be his own for all he knew. Someone had gone to the trouble of removing the weapon from his back and tending the worst of his injuries, it seemed...but then left him bound here. Why? For what purpose?

He didn't like any of the options he was coming up with.

His mouth was parched. It was more of an anxious reaction than a conscious one when his tongue flicked over his dried lips. His lower lip was cracked and the taste of blood blossomed once more in his mouth, stronger than before. That was not helping the growing sense of anxiety about his whereabouts. He was weak, in pain, but he tried once more to get his Sight to focus. Not sure that helped either, when what came into view was the cloudy aura he'd last seen on the battlefield, sweeping down from the sky and raining death upon his people.

Only...it was all around him now.

If not for his enhanced hearing, he probably wouldn't have heard a sharp, commanding voice; muffled by distance or objects between, he wasn't sure.

"I want any stragglers found and rounded up, do you understand me?"

"Aye, sir. Also...he's awake."

There was little time to let this thought settle in, moments later, the sound of rustling...like canvas or leather...a tent flap?...preceeded the entrance of another Pae. His Sight told him only What he'd already assumed. Blood Pae. The Faun remained hunched over as much as he could without straining his arms, pretending to be less alert than he was. Not much of a stretch. A hand took his chin, lifting his head, turning it this way and that as if looking him over, none too gently. Groaning softly for effect, he allowed his eyelids to flutter, knowing his pale eyes would naturally appear unfocused. Released, his head fell forward again. More sounds of movement, then another hand on his chin, lifting him up and pressing something to his lips. A cup. He thought to refuse it...but the instant the cool water washed over his cracked lips, he tossed aside any thoughts that it might be poisoned or a trick...who cared? He greedily drank, having to pause once when he started to cough, then strained forward for the rest until the cup was emptied and taken away.

"I suppose you are awake after all." A pause. "Better?"

It was hard to read much from the voice in the brief exchange. Playing it safe, the Seer merely nodded his head weakly.

"Good." The voice seemed to carry a smile with it, but not a reassuring one. "Can't have a guest being treated badly, of course. Just won't do. Your wounds have been tended, you've had water...perhaps some food after a while. But first, your host had hoped you might be able to answer a few simple questions."

Here it comes.

"I suppose you know what we want. Let's start with something simple. Like...where is the Book?"

What remained of feigned civility was gone with that one sentence. The voice of the other had shifted from faux courtesy to something much, much darker. Without hesitation, the Faun turned his face upwards in a mask of confusion. "Book? What are you talking about? I don't have any book--" The blow came without warning, landing solidly and splitting his cheek open while snapping his head to the side. He saw stars for a moment and was unable to think, let alone respond, while his head spun.

"Such insolence. Is this how you primitives repay kindness and hospitality? You dare feign ignorance with me?"

"Please...I'm just a poor blind man! What would I do with any books?" Startled by the sudden presence in front of his face, he tried to pull back, but the Blood Pae had grabbed ahold of one of his antlers, tugging sharply downward and twisting, forcing the Seer's head to follow awkwardly with a wince.

"I know well what you are, blind one," came the hissed reply. "Play your game while you can. I will get the answers I seek. It's just a matter of time."

The Seer grunted as his antler was released with a rough flick of the other's wrist. For the first time since the other had entered, he dropped the pretense of confusion and haze from his expression, glaring furiously in reply. "Go ahead, kill me for all I care. I'm not telling you anything. I should be dead anyway."

He was answered with...laughter.
"Perhaps...but, since I saved you, it seems like that decision is all mine now, isn't it? You may beg for death, but only receive it if I decide to grant you such a blessing." With another rustle of canvas, the Seer was left in silence. Only when he was sure he was alone, he allowed his head to drop forward tiredly. As the blood dripped from his cheek, he began sending prayers to the Earth for the strength to endure.

Hello, Ema. It's me again.

I'm not sure how long it's been. Days? Weeks? Hard to say anymore. Time has ceased to mean much to me. It all just sort of...blends together after a while.

"Hold him down! You! Bring me a torch!"

Waking is pain. The darkness when it comes is peace. But, that pain is always coming again. That is the only thing left to me that is certain. Not even the questions are certain anymore. So many questions.

"Where is the Book?"

"Where is the tree?"

"Where are the other Faun?"

Sometimes though, there are no questions. Only pain. I have experienced horrors I could have never imagined in any of my visions or nightmares. I have been beaten, cut, burned, and otherwise tortured...but not broken. Not yet. So far, I have endured...though I know not how long that may continue.

At first, I thought that since I had survived, perhaps the spirits had truly blessed me. That somehow, I could hold out and find a way to escape this place and find my way back to you. I gave my captors nothing but silence. I believe that infuriated my inquisitor. I will admit to taking some pleasure from that initially, though I may have only made things harder on myself as a result.

I have since lost all hope of escaping this place alive. Even if I broke and told them anything, I am sure they would kill me anyway. He would at least. As if I could even live with myself at that point if I betrayed my kin. Eventually, I broke my silence, only to give them nonsense instead.

"Nnnngh...! Bury the sword where th-...the sky...devours the earth...and the answers you seek...blossom from the snowy petals...!"

At first they tried to make sense of my ramblings. Heh. To be honest, I don't even know where I come up with these things anymore. That concerns me. Maybe I'm truly losing my mind. If I can't trust my mind, I can't trust my mouth. What if I begin inadvertently spilling truths? No, this cannot last much longer.

I don't suppose these creatures know what we can do. At least, well...some of us. Suppose if more Faun shared such a profound connection with the Earth, it might be more commonly known. Just my luck, right? It was once a gift. Now, it has become only a burden and a curse. The Earth lends me strength, healing my wounds and keeping the worst of the damage within my form from eventually killing me. Sometimes, I wish it wouldn't.

Eventually, the damage surpasses what the earth can heal...but never quite enough. Immediately, help is called to have me patched up, fixed just enough that it can all start again. This man...no, forget that. He doesn't deserve the distinction of being called a 'man.' He is a beast. My inquisitor is a monster and nothing more. Where I have noticed some hesitation and discomfort from the others in what is done to me at times, never from him. If not for his frustration with my stubbornness, I would swear that he is enjoying this. Even his own people seem to fear him.

I am beginning to.

If not for one incident, I would have believed all hope gone in the world, cruelty taking its place.

"Err...General Strafe, sir, I know it's not my place, but...perhaps this is going a little far? I mean...I don't know how much more the prisoner can take..."

"You're right. It's not your place. If the prisoner isn't talking, then we're not going far enough! I'll not have some damnable medic questioning my methods! You're here for one reason, and one reason alone! If I tell you to patch up this tree-hugging forest beast, then you'll do it! And if his heart stops, you're going to start it again. As many times as I tell you, you got it?!?"

"...yes, sir."

I'd actually believed that I was delirious at the time, my sanity beginning to slip from the pain and exhaustion. Perhaps it was all a dream, or I was hallucinating and hearing things...but I held out some sliver of hope in the hesitation I read from my remaining guards. I'll not go so far as to defend these Blood Pae, not by any means. But even a sign that any sort of decency exists is more than I'd ever expected to see at this point. There was nothing else from the one who'd tried to speak up, but I was given something that sent me to a peaceful, dreamless sleep for some hours afterwards. More mercy than I'd expected.

When he couldn't break me physically, he tried a new approach.

"No more questions about the Tree. That's been taken care of. All we need now is the Book."

After all that had happened so far, I thought my heart had stopped and plummeted to the ground. No! What had happened to the Tree? What about the others? For once, I let my shock show, panic clear in my expression. I could almost see the smile on his face.

"Heh...didn't think we'd find them did you? Turns out we didn't need your help. The Tree is ours, and all the cowards inside it. Our campfires may never be lacking firewood again!" After a short bark of laughter, he continued. "Now, only one question remains...where is the Book? Might as well tell us. You're the last left of your kind. What do you have left to lose?"

Panic had gripped my heart so tightly I could feel the pain in my chest. No! You were supposed to be safe with the others! What had happened? How had they found the Tree? It was hidden, safe, protected. I reached out in fear, searching for you, ignoring my immediate surroundings...please, let it be a mistake...I would have known, wouldn't I? No matter how far apart...

I found you. Faint...I could not feel much through our connection, except what was most important. You were still there. Still safe. Wherever you were, you were safe. Which was enough for me to reign in my panic and make sense of the situation. My tormentor had gotten nowhere with trying to destroy my will through torturing my body, so he attacked me with lies instead. He could not know that our soul bond would not lie to me.

I had been frozen in concentration for some time, so I allowed myself to sag, head hanging as if realization had hit me, overwhelming me with despair. His soft chuckling filled me with fury I dared not display.

"I'll leave you to think that over then."

Just knowing that you were still safe had helped to calm the turmoil in my mind. Our connection still remains, though I suppose you can't actually hear me. Maybe that's a good thing. I don't wish to burden you, my love. It's just...talking to you makes me feel like I'm not quite so alone. Even if it's a sign that I'm starting to slip...it's helped me last this long. I apologize. I haven't found a way to return to you. I don't suppose I will. I'm running out of time. My resistance is weakening, my mind is slipping, the pain and the weariness and the fear all blurring together. I cannot take much more.

I have to escape. Whether to freedom...or to death. I will not betray you or my brethren. I choose death first. If this monster will not kill me outright, well...I fear I am a coward and lack the strength to do so myself, if I were even able. So, perhaps I will have to force their hands instead.

If I have not completely misread these creatures, maybe some pity remains for the poor Faun, being beaten and tortured again and again over some book. I cannot expect them to risk themselves to help me openly. But, if I give them an opportunity, forcing them to act and end my suffering... Ah, I may be too optimistic for a scenario so dire.

Either way, I cannot take anymore. I ask the Earth one final time to lend me its strength. Just this one last time. If I can do this right, it will be all I need.

Only a few guards were stationed to watch the tent; the Seer was otherwise left alone and ignored until his inquisitor began another session. Physically, he probably looked much worse than he was, as the Earth had helped heal some of his internal injuries, leaving the external to the Blood Pae healers. He was still battered and weak though, as much of his remaining energy went to aiding this never-ending healing cycle. Still, if he could borrow enough strength for a show, to make them think he was still dangerous, then maybe that would be enough.

Either I leave here under my own power...or not. This ends today.

The rumbling began, at first seeming like an imagined sensation, then growing to dispel all doubt. The ground was shaking. Alarmed shouts rose from the guards outside, activity suddenly a flurry in the area surrounding the tent. "It's the prisoner!" one finally shouted, rushing to call for reinforcements. Good, he had their attention.

The first guard who peered into the tent was met with a sharp flick of the Seer's head, a motion that sent a collection of rocks and dirt from the floor into his face before exploding with earth magic. He'd never thought himself the best at geomancy, but he had to admit being a little proud of that one, what with his hands still bound.

I'm sorry, my love. I couldn't get home. Forgive me for being weak. A coward. I've failed you.

He began pulling soil and pebbles from the floor to his form, absorbing them as an armored coating. The beginning shift strained the bonds around his limbs, but he continued anyway, though he drew no larger objects towards him than small rocks. No large boulder plates like before. He wasn't really trying to armor himself, but to be honest, he wasn't sure he had the strength to do so if he'd tried. Already, he felt the strain on his weakened body. The expression he wore, however, conveyed none of that. He seemed filled with fury and madness, grinning wildly and allowing a laugh to bubble up from within. That's right, the prisoner's snapped. Should really do something about that, right?

He'd have taken the option of escape if he'd thought it possible, but even if he managed to get free of this tent, he wasn't sure he had the strength to escape the entire Blood Pae army. No, this was a show and nothing more. Hopefully, it'd be enough to incite panic just long enough for something to happen. Some frightened guard acting rashly to protect himself or his fellow soldiers.

Please, do not think ill of me. I hope you're proud. I regret that I cannot protect you anymore. You know I'd have found a way back to you if I could. This is the best I could do to keep you safe.

Goodbye, Emalyn...I love yo--

He was pretty sure it was a spear this time. The meager layer of soil over his chest did little to stop the weapon from reaching his heart. Almost as an unconscious action, he managed to seal extra soil and rock around the entrance wound, locking the foreign object in place. Wouldn't be easy to pull that one out and fix him up again. Final action complete, he fell forward as everything faded to black, one last time...a peaceful smile on his face...

As the ancient Seer's final thought was cut short, back in the present, a shudder traveled through Vanya's body before she fell limp and still, void of breath.

Takis didn't notice the soft ball of light as it neared him. It had become a familiar presence, so his mind had gradually tuned it out, as it spoke to his mate, not him. It's only when it started jingling frantically near his ear that he focused on it and was able to hear words.

"--and I told her not to do it! I told her it was a terrible idea, I did! But you know how stubborn she can be and--"

"Woah, slow down," said Takis, putting one hand up. His heart began to beat faster. "What's wrong, now?"

"It's Vanya! She looked into places she shouldn't have and now she's, er, unwell. You need to go to her now! I've got to get to Earthmother right away! Go! Go go!"

He wouldn't have to tell Takis twice. Immediately Takis sprung to his feet from the bench where he was sitting. It's a long, winding trip up the Tree from his workshop to the nook he shared with Vanya, but Takis didn't intend to take the walkway.

As Veryan flitted off, Takis ran straight toward a vertical wall and...began to climb its smooth surface. Slow, methodical Takis scrambled up the side of the room to the walkway, then climbed over the railing and pushed a few faun out of his way before continuing up the side of the Great Tree again. It would seem a very odd sight to anyone below--the patient Treeshaper frantically running up the very walls of the Tree itself.

Running vertically, jumping off knots in the walls, and using any available hand- or hoof-hold to speed his progress, Takis ascended toward their chamber. His heart was in his throat and he blinked back tears as he climbed, unable to think of anything except reaching her. He'd always known this sort of danger was part of her new job description. Ever since she first took her vows as Seer, he'd known that the Spirits could be traumatizing to their servant. He'd cradled her in his arms then, just as he'd cradled her in his arms when a vision overtook her while she slept. He'd stroked her hair and helped her return to this world. He'd always thought of himself as a firm boulder she could anchor herself to, in visions and out. He'd never thought the Spirits would cause one seeking their wisdom to perish, as Vanya had told him the Naiad Queen and Captain almost had.

It's this thought that propelled him forward even as his thighs burned with exertion and the rest of his body shook with fear. The Spirits would not take her from him this day.

After what seemed like an eternity, Takis arrived at their nook. He practically broke the door down as he crashed into the room. His heart, which had been firmly lodged in his throat, plummeted into his stomach as he looked upon the face of his beloved, devoid of color, ashen, and her bosom unmoving, not even in tiny breaths. His heart broke into a million tiny pieces.

"No, no NO!" he exclaimed, practically leaping to her side and cradling her in his arms. The tears that had sat at the edge of his vision flowed freely now, hot against his cheeks as he squeezed her close to him and rocked back and forth. "I'm here, Vanya," he sobbed, burying his face into her hair. "Come back to me, beloved, I'm here!" His voice cracked and his throat burned, the muscles clenched tight he could barely breathe. "I'm here, come back," he whispered over and over, grief clouding his mind like a fog.

User Image Upon returning from another outing to ensure the new tree Rochadhiel was ready for the new residents, the faun's Earthmother was ready to spend the next week sleeping in the comfort of her own soft pallet. Her joints ached so bad from all the traveling lately. "There has to be a better way to travel..." she mused to herself as she entered her own little nook on the second level of Laisidhiel -- the one tucked in under the ramp leading up to the third level, and right above the Seer's ritual room. She pulled a wooden box from a cubbyhole and moved to sit in one of her older, more rickety chairs. Rais kept telling her to get new ones, or have the Tree Shaper fix her old ones, but she didn't want to bother the busy young man with such trivial work. He had much more important purposes. Besides, these ones had sentimental value.

She pulled a small woven bag from the box and then set it aside. Inside the bag she removed what looked like a walnut. She twisted the nut and pulled the two sides apart to reveal a balm inside. With two fingers, she applied the balm to her knees. Hefting a sigh of relief one would think she had been lifting boulders, she slunk down in her chair and relaxed.

A little buzz in the air and an uncomfortable tug in the back of her mind caused her ear to twitch and turn. She kept her eyes closed for better focus. She tilted her head, turned it a bit to the left and rotated her ears as if trying to tune into a specific frequency. A familiar scent wafted through the air, barely catching attention. Fruity, but woodsy; gentle and comforting. Willow. Thalas!

Emalyn's eyes popped open and she sprang to her hooves, belying her previous slow and achy approach to her home. "Vanya," she whispered, "What did you do?" She grabbed her staff and headed for the door only to be met face to face by a familiar little glow. Veryan buzzed with anxious energy relaying the message Vanya had given him to deliver should something happen to her.

As spry and agile as any young faun, she sprinted up the ramp, circling around the inside of the tree. Her heart thumped so hard, she felt like it was trying to jump from her chest. Aches and pains that were merely a distant memory returned to the forefront of her conscious as she prayed to the Great Spirit she'd not be too late. She had no idea how much time had passed. Bullheaded girl. I would have helped after trying to dissuade you.

The door was already open thankfully so Em only used her staff to hitch the door jamb and change her trajectory to land inside the nook Vanya shared with her mate, Takis. The sight nearly wrecked her. She saw Takis covered in tears, shivering and clinging to a pale, lifeless form. The feeling she got -- the message from the Tree -- she'd hoped they were only an illusion, her tired mind playing tricks on her. Despite the obvious truth, she didn't want to believe Vanya's soul returned to the Tree yet. She had a lot of work still left to do in order to fulfill the measure of this life.

An ancient link; her bond of the past was tugging at her heart. As much as the feeling made her want to embrace it, she had to fight it. She had a responsibility to those of this life. She immediately moved to Takis' side, fighting through his hysteria and putting his hands crossed Vanya's heart. "Takis, hun, deep breaths." She inhaled and exhaled with him. "We'll find her and bring her back. I need you to be calm." She put her hands on top of his. "Focus all your energy. All of your love, to this one spot right here, ok?" She put a little pressure on his hands to indicate that he needs to focus his energies and love on Vanya's heart. "We can do this," she assured him.

She wished she could believe her own words. She was terrified this wouldn't work. This was treading Vanya's territory -- restoring departed souls, but she had a limited capacity to do it herself. When the Naiad Queen and her guard briefly parted their bodies, Earthmother had tapped into Vanya's ability to spirit walk and find specific spirits. She wasn't even fully sure if Vanya was aware she could do it. But with Vanya being the one needing her spirit returned to her body, Em was on her own this time. Thankfully, her assimilation with Laisidhiel all those centuries ago allowed for deeper spiritual connections from the Tree and Faun.

She closed her eyes, concentrating on that fruity, woodsy scent. The vibrations weren't that long gone, so they were easy to trace. She focused with all her energy, reaching out beyond the Tree's consciousness, to the realm beyond. The spirit realm of Laisidhiel, where the spirits of all Faun - past and present - dwell while they wait for their new mortal form. Where they exist to guide and protect loved ones and soulmates. The place where Pae'il have no form, but they recognize each other's unique energy.

"Thalas Tenderhoof."
PostPosted: Thu Apr 03, 2014 10:24 pm

Warmth and light, all around, beckoning, promising safety...security and healing...refuge from hardship and pain...so tempting...

But there was hesitation. Voices kept breaking through, creating confusion...

"...Vanya. Come back...I'm here..."

...what? What was...?

Another voice soon followed, female this time, but clearer.

"Thalas Tenderhoof."

If spirits could be indignant, a wave some sort of similar irritation seemed to interrupt the draw towards the light and warmth. As if from a distance, two more voices...familiar and yet not...drifted forwards...

"Would you stop calling me that?"

"No."

"Just because I had that stone stuck when I cracked my hoof..."

"You whined like a baby."

"...did not."

The light was so tempting, but something kept tugging back. But...back there was pain. Fear. And ahead, the light was so welcoming, promising peace and protection.

Not yet, young one. There is still work for you to do...

What? Rejection? By the light? No...why?

Hesitating once more, the temptation of the light warred with the pull back towards the gathered figures, the voices, calling out, drawing back to pain and hardship...but also love, companionship...the good along with the bad...

It had barely registered for Takis when the other had entered the room. His entire world was falling around him. Ending. There'd be no more after this. He'd been broken into a million pieces and he didn't care who knew or saw.

When he heard her voice, his attention snapped to the newcomer. It was Earthmother. He struggled to focus on her words, though her voice was hazy through his own anguish. Deep breaths, that's all he'd caught at first, and he labored against the sobs wracking his body to breathe this way. Inhale. Exhale. Again. I need you to be calm. Calm. He'd always been the calm to Vanya's storm, the roots that anchored her to the earth as her boughs were blown about by change and chaos. Inhale. Exhale. Again.

Earthmother was moving his hands now, placing them over Vanya's heart. He couldn't tell what kind of ritual she wanted to perform, and panic began to take over again. If Vanya was dead, her spirit would go back to the Tree...was this a way to release it from her body? Be calm, Takis. Inhale. Exhale. Again.

It was only with Earthmother's next words that the sentence previous penetrated his mind. We'll find her and bring her back. For a moment his heart soared! There was hope yet!

Now the slow, deliberate Takis took hold again. He imagined himself as growing roots, anchoring Vanya to him, and the both of them to this world. He took slow, measured breaths without trouble now, focusing his energy on the task at hand. Beneath his hands Vanya's heart was a beautiful, tired rose that needed nourishment from his love. He imagined himself pouring his love into her heart. Everything he had to give, he'd give to her.

He called to mind each happy memory they'd shared together. They'd been so young when they'd first met. She'd been nervous and scared. He'd been awkward and hesitant. Takis remembered making the midday meal for them in his parents' house, before they had all come to the Tree. He remembered the adventure that had been coming here to Laisidhiel, and how terrified he'd been when it had been time for Chieftan Rais to choose a wife. He thought the spirits would take Vanya away from him. Because how could she be wrong for anyone? She was perfect. He'd thought he'd missed his chance to tell her how he felt.

How wrong he'd been! And how his heart had sung that night, the night she took the mantle of Seer. They promised each other to be together forever. And he'd made it official with the flower in her hair, permanently part of her. And permanently part of him, because Vanya was as much a part of Takis himself as his own hands.

The big moments he poured into Vanya's heart, imagining them to be water for a thirsty soul. And then he filled the spaces between with every touch they'd shared, every kiss, every moment whether ordinary or special. He poured their life together into her heart, trying with all his strength to remind her what she had to live for in the land of the living.

Emalyn focused all of her energy; all that her soul could muster to find her former soulmate among the scattered emotions and fog of the spirit world. She never was any good at this, and she wasn't born with the ability, either. It was something Laisidhiel bestowed upon her when she awoke to revive the faun after the period of peaceful rest following the Great War.

The familiar indignation with laced with love caught her attention. She knew that light. That energy. She'd know it anywhere. "Tenderhoof," she projected her thoughts so they'd be heard across the expanse of the faun's spiritual resting place. That term of affection was only shared between the two as young fauns. It'd stuck. Thalas acted like didn't like it. Emalyn loved teasing him, and she was sure he did too. It was one of those little details she missed most about her mate. The little things like playful affection, little memories that mean everything, or the shared joy with their family. It was those little things that she always kept in the back of her mind, reminding herself that all of the sacrifices of those brave Faun were not in vain. There was the chance for peace in this life; a chance to have the life they were meant to have. Provided Em was successful in fulfilling her own destiny.

Vanya was pivotal in that plan, and she couldn't let this young faun go before fulfilling the measure of her creation. "Thalas, you need to come back. There's a young soul out there that needs you. Our people need you. You have a destiny to fulfill and this is your chance to complete it!"

She waited for a response. Spirits couldn't talk, well if they did, she couldn't hear them. She was not attuned with the spirit world enough. But she could feel the vibrations and energies and feel the emotions and pains of the spirits. She waited to see if she reached Thalas with her emotional plea. She hoped he hadn't already decided to move on.

"Laisidhiel, help me."

While Earthmother was in a trance trying to reach out to Vanya's spirit, tears started to dampen the fine fur around her eyes. She felt like losing him all over again, but this time was different. She was trying to save him, she could save him, but had to have the will to return. She knew him. Knew he would face destruction if it meant saving the Faun. She clung to that hope so tight, she started squeezing Taki's hands below hers.

She could feel the warm love radiating from Vanya's mate. The emotion was so overwhelming it was hard to discern it from anything else. "Thalas... Vanya."

A jolt hit Em in the chest and a sudden clarity entered her mind. "Vanya."

The vibrations shifted all around her. She could feel Thalas' presence. Imagined his wry humor and indignant responses to her teases. She remembered a time when he couldn't get enough of that teasing, when they were young. The thought elicited a smile and small sigh. The energy engulfed her, filling her with a sense of relief, love and pure joy. She embraced it, until it shifted and faded away from her. She knew.

The presence in the spirit world was gone. Vanya's unique energy was no longer detectable.

Em opened her eyes and blinked a few times to adjust to the light. She could feel Takis' trembling hands beneath hers. "Takis." She lifted his hands from Vanya's chest to prevent injury, but taking care to keep them in hers. "I think she heard you."

The final emotion that Em felt before letting go, she'd hold in her heart for the rest of her days. She knew Thalas loved her. She knew he loved their sons, even the one he never got a chance to formally meet. That final feeling; the final farewell, was something she never thought she'd experience. It was a renewed sense of hope and absolution. It was sense of final closure. That spirit belongs to Vanya. Thalas is merely a distant memory that lives forever in her heart, and Vanya is here now, an echo of the hero Thalas, but her own Faun and her own hero. She will be remembered in the history books, and one day tales will be told to the children of the brave Lady Vanya.

Awareness returned slowly, but everything remained muddled at first. Memories of one life blended with those of another...the last conscious memory had been relief, release from pain and agony, peace settling...

Pressure on his chest...hands...figures crowded around...they were bringing him back again. Panic flooding her system, as soon as she could move, the Seer attempted to push the figures away, scrambling backwards with a panicked screech, "NO, NOT AGAIN! WHY WON'T YOU JUST LET ME DIE?!?" His breaths were ragged...wait...no, her breaths... Rage and fear wavered, confusion taking its place. The memory of pain lingered...but it was only a phantom. Her Vision was different...more limited than his...but also...just different. Adrenaline had her pulse racing; she had curled in on herself, drawing her knees towards her torso, one hand braced on the ground, the other clutching her chest.

Recognition of the present auras dawned slowly. It was like crawling out of a heavy fog, but the situation was gradually starting to clear. Their presence, the mood of the room, the readings from their auras, the way they'd been gathered around her...she'd have been a fool to not realize what had happened. More of a fool than she already was for what actions she'd taken.

The adrenaline was fading now and she clenched her hand into a fist at her chest to hide the shaking. The fury and sorrow she'd felt in Thalas' final moments was fading and tears were pricking the edges of her eyes. It had all felt so real...all of it...the thoughts and emotions shared, as well as the pain and agony they'd endured at the hands of their cruel captor...it was no wonder the peace of the beyond had been so tempting.

Glancing between the two present Faun with her, her thoughts were whirling. Takis. Emalyn. They'd brought her back. She could only imagine what they were thinking or feeling right now; she was having trouble making sense of her own Vision at the moment. After a moment, Vanya's lip quivered and she let the emotional surge break over her. She threw herself at her mate, clinging to him and burying her face in the soft fur of Takis' chest. "I'm so sorry....I'm so, so sorry," she sobbed, saying little else for a while that made much sense except to apologize repeatedly for what she'd done. To herself. To both her saviors, but especially her poor mate. To have found her like that...she couldn't imagine now what she'd done to him. She merely hid her face and poured out the pent up emotions in hiccuping sobs until she felt completely drained. It felt like a release after weeks of holding back.

Only when she could regain control of her voice did she lean back. She was still holding tight to Takis, but her attention turned towards Earthmo--Emalyn. "I'm...so sorry. I...had no idea...I didn't know..." Her tone had changed for this apology...rather than apologizing for her own actions, it seemed as if she was expressing sympathy instead. As one offering consolation for an unknown loss brought to light. She had gotten so used to Earthmother knowing everything before she did that it never occurred to her to think otherwise. Clearly, the elder faunness would know what she meant.

Just when everything seemed lost, Takis felt a glimmer of life pass through his beloved. He couldn't say what it was that told him she had come back, perhaps it was a muscle twitching, or the slightest of breaths, or perhaps he could just feel the rose beneath her chest bloom once again. Either way, Takis bit his bottom lip and held his breath, chancing a glance at Earthmother to see if she could feel it also.

When Vanya had...exploded back to life, practically catapulting herself from his arms, it startled Takis so much that he yelped and let go of her, pulling his arms back to himself as if she might bite him. When the realization hit that she is alive and speaking and breathing again, he couldn't stop grinning. She'd come back to him! For real! Nothing would separate them again. He never wanted to let Vanya out of his sight again.

She clung to him and wept, repeating how sorry she was. The apology practically didn't even register for Takis. The only feeling he could feel was relief, in this moment. He wrapped his arms around her and squeezed her thighs with his. He felt himself weeping again, this time with tears of joy and the most profound sense of relief he'd ever felt. He felt as if it were he who had died and come to life again instead of Vanya. He kissed her head again and again, holding her tight, and murmuring "I love you Vanya," over and over, his voice choked with emotion.

He couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy when Vanya turned her attention to Earthmother. What was she talking about? Perhaps it had something to do with her vision, but couldn't that wait? For now she needed to rest, recuperate, rejuvenate. She needed to heal. They needed to heal. He was somewhat curious about the words she'd screamed when she'd come back to life, but there is a large part of him that didn't want to know. All that mattered is that this was over. She was his again, and he was whole again.

When Vanya burst forth, reclaiming that lost breath of life while screaming the most horrific thing Earthmother has ever heard, she fell backwards, hitting the wooden floor with her tailbone. She winced in pain, but not from the hard landing. She'd sensed some of Thalas' pain and anguish in the spirit world, but she figured she knew what it was about, and chose to focus on the love. What could possibly incite such a horrific request?

Again. That single word troubled her most.

She witnessed Vanya come in to her own consciousness and scurry to Takis' arms. Something bothered her a little about Takis' actions in this moment, but it wasn't the time for worrying about such petty things. She'd meditate on it later. Her focus was on Vanya's reaction more, because it was frightening. Was she referring to Thalas' sacrifice? Did she learn who Thalas was to her? The tone and previous cry led her to believe something else.

She considered her next words carefully, because she knew she'd have a hurdle in Takis. But it was important to learn what Vanya saw while it was still fresh in her mind, before her subconscious decided to block it out as a defense mechanism. "Vanya," she said softly, reaching out to put a hand gently on her shoulder. She knows our history, maybe she'll know I mean no harm in asking this. "What ... what happened? What did you see?"

She wasn't a full healer like she wanted to be; like she used to be. But she could at least offer temporary comfort with contact. Shifting so she was sitting on her knees beside the couple, she offered a hand to Takis. She felt familiar enough with the Seer for personal contact, but Takis she didn't know as well. She was unsure if he was the aggressive type or the timid type.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 29, 2014 1:00 pm

Instinct had told her that she would find safety and comfort in her mate's embrace...but that wasn't exactly what happened. She was supposed to feel better. She didn't. Of course, Takis had tried to comfort her, and his words at least had helped continue to ground her in this life. She sensed he was gaining much more comfort from their contact though than she. At first, she'd assumed it'd been the lingering trauma from the vision she'd just escaped, but when it didn't fade, she was having a harder and harder time reminding herself that this wasn't something she needed to escape from. Only minutes ago, at least in her mind, physical contact had equaled pain, prolonged time with someone in her personal space, agony.

She endured the embrace as long as she was able, before the churning nausea and anxiety in her stomach forced her to extract herself as gingerly as possible from her mate's grasp. She knew he meant well, and she didn't want to hurt his feelings, but she wasn't sure she could endure such smothering and fear-inducing contact for much longer without a more obvious, inadvertent rejection. Vanya did her best to keep the action neutral and not make much of a scene. She pulled away just enough to get some space between them, while remaining close. She took his hand in hers to try to lessen the blow; it was as much as she could handle right now.

Distress plain on her features, Vanya nearly jumped at the additional contact, but reached up to lay her other hand over the Earthmother's before she could misunderstand and pull away. She was distracted by her anxiety, else she may have thought more carefully about her words. "I...I'm sorry. I...already knew about you two," she admitted, wondering what the Earthmother would think that she hadn't said something before now. Then again, maybe she'd understand the awkwardness of the situation and how Vanya hadn't yet figured out how to broach the subject. Of course, that mattered little now, she thought, continuing. "But, had I known what had happened, I...perhaps I wouldn't have gone looking for the truth," she muttered, head hanging.

It had never occurred to her that anything she would have seen would have been new knowledge. It always seemed as if she were the child, constantly reaching for new discoveries, only to find Earthmother already there, smiling, waiting to teach her more. As if she were only waiting for the younger to discover the path before leading her along it.

In the silence that followed though, something aside from the fear and pain seeped through from her vision...

Thalas' relief that Emalyn hadn't known what he had endured, nor the manner of his end.

Oh Spirits...

The horror of the realization flickered over her face. No...could she...not know? Even now? She....she couldn't take that away...it felt like betraying Thalas' last wish! Vanya felt as if the haze was slowly clearing, the distraction of her own discomfort giving way to this new turmoil. She couldn't be the one...if Earthmother didn't know, she didn't want to be the one to tell her. How could she? If only she'd been thinking clearly, she may have reasoned better than to say anything...

She thought she'd cried enough already to have her tears run dry. Raw emotions, her own and those not her own lingered, however, and it wasn't for herself this time as the telltale burning pricked her eyes. "Spirits, I...I'm sorry, Emalyn..." her voice faltered and she hadn't even realized that she'd addressed the Earthmother by name, simply feeling lost for what to say. For the first time since beginning her journey as the Seer, she felt reluctant to share what she'd seen with the Earthmother, even if it was in some way important to the larger picture. Anyone else, perhaps, but knowing what she knew now, how could she? She cared too much for the elder faunness to hurt her in such a way.

Could knowledge of such atrocities really do anything except cause pain?

It hadn't escaped Takis' notice that Vanya had very deliberately extracted herself from his embrace. Especially not when he'd fully expected her to embrace him in return. It was like a dagger to his heart, even such a small gesture. Why would she shy away from him? He worked through the fog of his own emotions, wiping away the last of the tears, to try and focus on Vanya now. He tried to focus his mind on the present, and what she needed from him now that that harrowing experience was over. Suddenly the words that had burst from her mouth as she awoke from death returned to his mind. What on Earth, Sea, and Sky had she seen that would make her react that way? What sort of trauma must she have endured? The thought made him want to fold her into his arms again, but...he had to think of Vanya's needs now. Obviously she'd been through more than he knew, even more pain than even he and Earthmother had been through just now.

He was grateful for the support from Earthmother, and gladly took her hand when she offered it. Even better was when Vanya took his hand again. It grounded him. Made him feel more himself. He listened to the two women talk, feeling like a complete outsider. What were they talking about? He forced himself to listen intently, hanging on each word that was said. How could he help Vanya without knowing what ailed her? What had she uncovered in the vision? And what was its connection with Earthmother? He watched Earthmother's expressions, trying to get a sense of what all of this meant to her.

In the meantime he tried to put down roots again, metaphorically. Everything had him feeling shallow and overwatered. Takis began to take deep, calming breaths. He'd always been Vanya's anchor in her chaotic life. She needed him to be that anchor now more than ever. He said nothing again, just listened and was, silently telling Vanya that he was here for her, no matter what.
