Her eyes opened suddenly, blinking, the afternoon sun bright. She turned her head to look at her unfamiliar surroundings and winced. Her neck was painful just behind her ears, but she couldn't remember why. "Where am I?" she wondered aloud.

The wind blew softly, sending crunchy autumn leaves tumbling slowly and lazily across the earth. She stayed still on the ground as she thought, not wanting to disturb her aching head. "Forget where am I; where did I come from and how did I get here?" the mare thought to herself. "I know my name but I can't remember anything else about me."

A long sigh expelled from her lungs, warm breath escaping her velvety muzzle. She closed her eyes in concentration and climbed slowly to her feet. Her head complained only mildly, so Roxana walked tentatively, carefully, in a small circle. "Well, I guess I can travel, even if slowly. But where will I go?" She felt a pang of sadness as she fully realized that she had no idea who her friends or relatives are. Had been, now, she supposed. Was she unknowingly leaving behind a mother, a father, a mate & family of children? The possibility made her unhappy. A single tear rolled down her face.

"What do I do??" she wondered sadly.

She weighed her options. Would it be best to search for her past, or move on and let it stay in the past? It wouldn't do to try and straddle both the future and the past; she knew it'd ultimately only cause pain for all involved. No, she had to choose, and she had to stick with it. Roxana was not sure if she wanted to know what sort of life she'd come from. Perhaps it was wonderful and good, but it was equally likely that her past was bad. Perhaps it would be best to accept the second chance, to take the fresh start without looking back.

But if she had a family of any sort, wasn't it her obligation to try and find them? To try to make her way back to them? Where would she start to look? Would she even be able to find them? And what if she spent the rest of her life looking for a family that doesn't really exist? Should she let the rest of her life be consumed by a search for a hypothetical family? She knew that such a venture would be mostly fruitless, frustrating, and exhausting. Was that a life she was prepared to shoulder?

Roxana stayed in the wooded area she had awoken in, wandering and thinking. She supposed waiting here for a few days would give anyone looking for her a chance to find her. She paced, waking and wandering at all hours of the day, struggling with the decision she had to make. Did the responsibility to the hypothetical family outweigh her desire to live a happy life?

She stayed and let seven days pass. There was no sign of any Soquili but herself during that time. She looked around and sighed. This location was not sustainable for long-term living, and she knew it was time to move on. Roxana offered a silent apology to her past, took a deep breath to steady herself, and began to walk away from the small grove she'd called home for the week. It was time to leave her past behind her and make a happy life.
