The Chosen (please pretend the clothes are closer to 18th century lol) Name: Grant Belrose Sex: Male Age: 29 Occupation: Chef/cook/food prep Homeland: Gallia (France) Residence: Western Palisade / The Fox and Hounds Inn
Appearance
Grant is a rather average fellow, thin and short, with deceptively tired green eyes that are always hawk-like and on the look out for mistakes. His slender build lends to his quick movements; he darts about the workplace with the easy grace of a cat, and his hands are equally nimble. Appearing a bit older than he actually is, one of the only off qualities about him is his prematurely greying hair, which fades from black to silver starting at his temples. He keeps it short and neat, a must when working in the kitchen. If the color is a measure of his stress, it would be hard to tell, because he hides it beneath an aloof demeanor. Though he is most commonly seen in a messy apron, he has a weakness for fancy clothes, and dresses as well as his budget will allow for when he is off-duty, in dark tones and dressy shoes, always with spats. He is meticulous about keeping himself clean and well groomed and maintains a short, stylish goatee.
Personality [+] Hard-working, take-charge, quick-thinking [-] Snarky, impatient, hot-tempered
Grant is the kind of man who will change quite drastically, depending on where one finds him. At work (where he spends the majority of his time) he usually puts on a more serious mask, as it is his duty to control the preparation of food at the inn on a day to day basis. It is a trying job, but his organizational skills are well-honed, and allow him to carry out the work with relative ease. That is, as long as he has cooperation from his staff, who he will not hesitate to chew out if his orders aren't followed. The kitchen is where you'll likely see that temper of his erupt from time to time, if some new assistant has the misfortune of crossing him. A busy kitchen like the one at the Fox and Hound's must run like a well-oiled machine if it's to be successful, and he is keen in making sure that no one tosses a wrench into the gears. There are times, if things are running smoothly enough, that his sass will shine through, and it is not unheard of for him to quip back and forth with some of the older staff at the kitchen.
Outside of work, his impatient manner and passion for cooking subside to reveal a slightly more charming and laid back fellow. This is a surprise for some, especially any new workers who believe his viper-like qualities will pervade outside the workplace. Though he has experienced plenty of hardships in life, he still retains his playful wit, and has plenty of stories and small talk to entertain anyone he shares his company with. Going against the usual Gallian stereotypes, he is not particularly romantic and remains unmarried (to the chagrin of his mother), more content to enjoy the mixed atmosphere of the inn on his time off. A smoke and a card game are far more preferable to him than wooing women he has little in common with.
There are times when Grant becomes homesick, and toys with the idea of returning to Gallia someday. He's never acted upon those whims, even though the majority of his closest family still lives there. With the help of his mother, he has instead become a bit more familiar with the family on her side, and often goes to visit them with her when he manages to get time off.
Miscellaneous
He knows a good deal about the Old Ways from his mother, who has many relatives in Oldcastle. Though it has mostly been the stuff of fairytales to him from a young age, it was still intriguing to move to the country from which these wild stories originated.
Though he has the know-how for it, Grant has chosen to settle into a simpler life than that of a business or tradesman after witnessing the downfall of his father. He has a longstanding trust with Frank Varick, and helps to manage much of the kitchen finances on the side, one of the reasons he's managed to attain such a high position so quickly.
Grant's language is Gallion, but he is fluent in both English and Gallian and can read, write, and speak both easily.
Though he doesn't like to show it, he's also a fairly good singer and can play the accordion and the mandolin with some skill. They aren't skills he'll show off freely, and there are rumors floating around that he plays only for his mother.
History
Born in Gallia to Thomas and Cecille Belrose, Grant was raised in the picturesque countryside of his homeland, on a large vineyard owned by his father. Thomas met and wooed Cecille, a native Sunderlander, while she was traveling through the country to visit family, and after a year of shared correspondence they finally decided to get married, Cecille making the choice to move from Sunderland to Thomas' sprawling estate in Gallia.
Grant's childhood was a pleasant one, to say the least. His father owned a then-reputable vineyard, one of the many that produced the fine wine the country boasted of. Though he was an only child, many of his Gallian relatives also had a hand in his upbringing. Running the vineyard was more or less a family affair, and there was always an aunt or uncle around to show him something new, or a cousin to play with if he felt lonely. Poised to take over the vineyard after his father, he was also privately tutored in all the aspects of business and higher education, and worked hard in his studies, though it was not something he particularly enjoyed. He would much rather have been taking accordion lessons from his old uncle Gilbert, or helping his Aunt Sofie with cooking (and learning all of her tricks in the process).
The sweetness of youth wore off slowly. As Grant grew into a young man, the vineyard's productivity began to decline, and problems began to arise. Though Thomas disguised his troubles well, his business began to take on debt. Grant found himself taking on odd jobs in town as work slowed, and life was a bit duller as his cousins moved away to make lives of their own. Though things had not become unbearable, he could not fathom the approaching storm, and the tendency of his father to deny their financial trouble did not make it any easier.
The burden of his failing business was what eventually lead Thomas to his end, though he did not take his own life. He was found in his office one summer evening, and the doctors blamed stress and heart problems as the cause. Cecille's heart was similarly broken, though she would not follow in his footsteps so soon. She instead decided to return to Sunderland, after being forced to sell the land to settle the debt - and Grant followed her there, believing that the travel would do well to help in dealing with their shared grief.
Though finances were a constant plague, Cecille called upon the help of relatives to secure a comfortable flat near the Thrithing. Not wanting to stray too far from his aging mother, Grant hopped from place to place seeking out work, until finally landing a solid job as an 'exotic chef' at a fancy Sunderlandian inn. It was one of the few things he felt comfortable doing, though his mother felt it a shame that all of his book-learning would go to waste. Grant fell into the work easily, gradually working his way up to become the head of the kitchen, a stressful but rewarding job.
Currently
Living and working at the Fox and Hounds Inn, Grant controls the kitchen with an iron grip, and helps balance the finances in relation to the food expenses. After a trip to visit his aunts in Oldcastle, he has returned with a strange souvenir...

The Guardian Name: Cygne ('seen-yah') Meaning: 'swan' Sex: female
Personality:
A sweet and playful little fawn if there ever was one. She is energetic and not nearly as graceful as her namesake, though Grant insists that she will grow into it. Despite her often boisterous manner, she is incredibly affectionate and does not discriminate in who she grants her attentions toward. Though this can be problematic at times, she is adored by her Chosen, who treats her as kindly as he would a small child and spoils her to no end.
