He sat at a table with not one, but two tankards of mead in front of him and looked very satisfied with himself; probably because not only had he managed to dodge a very nasty beast earlier in the day, but also because he'd stumbled across some friendly faces in the midst of chaos.

Hopefully now he could find more.

Trex2000 was still in a rather unnerved state as he entered the tavern. Whatever that creature was, it was definitely a risk to his virtual life. That first re-try had been frightening, but who knew how many of those he had before it was game over for real? What was it people said, about if you die in a dream?

He wandered over to the table he had sat at before, the nice little corner table good for watching people... And there was a guy already sitting there.

Looking very pleased.

The teen just stared. All words had escaped him.

Unfortunately for Trex2000, the person sitting at said table had also spotted him, which meant that he was totally now within Ruffian's line of view. He slapped a hand cheerily down on the table, causing the ale to slosh over the sides of the mugs stickily.

"Hey, you!" he called with a grin. "Come sit over here!"

Trex continued to blink stupidly at the other player. Then he turned around, but saw nobody else rising to take the bait. The happy guy in his spot was really honestly talking to him.

"Uh, I think I had better... um... go do something... at the lake?" He offered, a polite Canadian refusal to the other guy's invitation. No without actually saying no.

Too bad for Trex2000 but Ruffian was also Canadian and therefore that automatically made them brothers-in-arms, even if neither one actually knew who the other was.

"No, come on, sit down," Ruffian said, and reached out, tugging on his sleeve. "Sit down and keep me company, it's a pretty crazy place all in all and it'd be nice to get some non-crazy talk right about now."

There was nothing he could say and remain politely Canadian. Other than "I-If you insist..."

He sat down at the table, and gave the two mugs of ale a wary look. "Yeah, it has been... really crazy." There was something suspiciously familiar about this guy, and Trex bit his tongue before he could ask if he was some sort of NPC or something. No, he had a player name and all that.

But on that note, was it wise hanging out with a self-proclaimed ruffian? The kid inched a little further away from his companion.

"I insist," said Ruffian, and grinned, already trying to discern which one this guy was. He pushed the second mug of ale towards him and gestured for Trex to beginning drinking, dragging the first mug up to take a long swallow himself.

"How are you? What's happening so far, kid?"

Trex looked doubtfully at the ale. "Ah, um, good," he offered lamely, lifting the mug and wrinkling his nose slightly at the smell. It was set down again without so much as a sip.

"But there is something really big out there. I don't know how many lives we get, but I'm not eager to go back into that forest anyway." He pushed the mug around on the table and showed no sign of wanting to drink it.

Ruffian slid a sideways glance towards Trex, looking mildly suspicious. "Usually when people say good they usually mean bad," he informed him, pointing a finger at Trex. "Just FYI."

He took a swig of ale and then grinned a little sheepishly. "I can understand that. It's pretty intense out there, lots of things trying to eat you and all."

Trex jerked back as a finger was pointed at him. "I-I suppose, um... n-not bad then?" He amended his statement in a nervous tone, it would have been better if he hadn't gotten eaten once.

The kid pushed the mug again, this time away from his body. "Have you run into much?"

If he thought long and hard about things, he would think he was going crazy.

Ian had spent a long time around crazy - though not all the same genre of crazy. His parents, for example, had been crazy in the sense that they had assumed every single person on the earth was of the same mindset as they were - and that what they said was clearly always the truth. Ian had spent most of his childhood arguing against them, but it had never worked, not really, because they had always assumed that they were obviously right and he was obviously wrong.

That was only one example of crazy. There were other genres of crazy, of course; such as the roommates Ian had had in college before Patrick, the ones that had gone out drinking every night, bar hopping until they were too dead drunk to even really realize what was happening; and then they'd stumble into the apartment at three in the morning, laughing raucously and smelling of cheap booze and cigarettes. Ian himself enjoyed going out every now and then, and he certainly liked a drink here and there - but that sort of crazy had never been his forte, not when he could sit back and relax and watch a movie instead of looking like an idiot and sounding even more like one.

Then there was the crazy that was about Shiloh, of course, but Shiloh was always the exception to everything that Ian had tried to hold onto. Shiloh was Shiloh, and that meant he was different in every sense of the word, no matter how hard or how much Ian attempted to protest that (he really should just stop denying it and accept it, but that was easier said than done).

And then, coming full circle, there was the kind of crazy that was this - a multicolored, intense, cacophony of lights, sounds, colors, places, creatures, and sensations all rolled into one rather large ball of madness that sometimes made sense and more often than not didn't make sense. In the back of his head, Ian knew it was just a game, just a dream, whatever it was, but that didn't mean that he couldn't help but wonder - if this was really and truly a dream, what on earth had possessed him to dream of such a thing?

He'd been silent too long, lost in his own inner musings. Ian cleared his throat, shifting back into being Ruffian, most definitely not just Ian. He smiled at Trex and not-so-casually inched the mug back across the table towards him, the smile shifting into a grin.

"Too much," he said with a laugh. "Too, too much. It's been one wild and crazy ride from start to...well, not finish, but at least to where I am now - sitting here with you, kid," he added with a wink, lifting his own mug to toast Trex before taking a long swallow.

"Come on, drink up," Ruffian said with a laugh. "Live a little! You deserve some down time if you've gone through all the hell I've gone through so far!"

His companion went silent for a time. Not the sort of silence Trex had known in the past, but a gentler, more pensive silence. The sort that made you just want to leave someone to finish their thoughts. In videogame terms, he wondered if Ruffian had gone afk for a minute, but he still was there, just... not.

But when he spoke up, Trex was inclined to agree. The world he lived in, not just this world he currently played in but the one he truly existed in, it had gotten real crazy in a hurry too. In a way this craziness was a pleasant escape from reality, the stark white walls and anxious nights and uncertain companions.

Ruffian had some game in him still, but for Trex the mood still felt a little heavy. This was all 'down time', even the chasing and being eaten by monsters. When he woke up he would be himself again, that small, unimportant self who might very well get eaten by monsters and not have an extra life to fall back on.

"Ah, I don't... Uh, I d-don't drink," Trex stammered. It might not count in a game, being game-ale and all, but it just felt so real. He had never liked the smell of beer anyway.
