              Shady Maru

A few weeks had passed since the attack, and things had been well. Relatively, at least. The dead crewman had been replaced, and Finn's wound healed, albeit slowly, and not fully - against the instructions of the physician, he had not rested as often as he should of. He found it difficult to sit still, and as soon as he had been able, he'd been up and running around, practicing his swordplay on the deck, and chasing his new companion - a deep brown and light cream spotted mouse he'd named 'Doubloon' - about. The mouse had come to him their first night back on the ship, and had pestered the pirate ever since. At first, Finn had tried to wave the rodent off, but after some observation, had noticed the mouse seemed far more intelligent than a normal creature, and though he didn't quite understand it, concluded there was something more to the pest.

Amidst honing his skills, bossing the crew around, caring for Doubloon, and drinking himself into a stupor at night, he'd had little time for Rose, but thought of her and their evening at the inn often. He'd almost kissed her then, and reflected on that moment more often than he probably should have. He also wondered frequently how she was handling her new life - especially after the assault - but as she hadn't said anything since, and Finn wasn't accustomed to prying, he'd left it alone, assuming she was fine. Still, he worried.

Thankfully, things had recently taken a lighter turn. The pirates caught wind of a massive carnival occurring that night in a nearby town, and never ones to pass up a party, they'd immediately changed course. Originally, they'd been returning to Sunderland, but their home port could wait for a short time - the festivities called!

While excess alcohol, women and revelry were all tempting, Finn knew the carnival provided a perfect opportunity for he and Rose to reconnect, and for Rose to let her hair down. He told her he'd devised a plan to sneak her out for her own good, but knew he was also doing it for himself - the chance to see Rose all dolled up again was to good to pass up. So Rose would play sick, and once they'd docked and the rest of the crew left the ship, Finn would smuggle her to land, where she'd be free to be a lady again for the night.

Rose had been busy herself- until the dead and wounded crew's replacements had been found and trained, it had been up to the rest of the crew- herself included- to pick up the slack. And even though she'd fallen into her bunk at the end of each shift exhausted, sleep had been dreadfully difficult to come by. Dreams of blood and violence plagued her, again and again she saw the faces of the men she'd killed as the light left their eyes. It did not make for good rest, and some of those men she worked with more regularly had commented on her lack of color and the bruised look of her eyes.

She'd found a measure of solace in a new creature who she'd discovered on a particularly sleepless night when she'd given up on her bed and been exploring the hold, double-checking the cargo lashing for something to do. In the dark of the hold she'd bumped something with her foot which had cried and scuttled away. It didn't sound like a rat, and Dante had retrieved the small, quivering ball of fluff and claws for her from between a couple of crates. He'd gotten much too big to sleep in Rose's bunk with her, and he was worried- perhaps a new small fluffy thing would help?

Born to one of the ship's Sunderland grimalkin, (and Rose felt sure she knew which one was the father by the kitten's brilliant eyes) the wee ball of fluff charmed Rose immediately, and lived in her bunk until she was big and quick enough to come out on deck. The striped beast was never far from Rose's side, sometimes hitching a ride on Dante's back. This indignity the young buck tolerated grudgingly, as the kitten's presence had eased Rose's nightmares somewhat.

When Finn finally deigned to speak to her only to inform her of his harebrained scheme, she'd found a smile and nodded. She could use some time away from the ship- no matter how much she or anyone else had scrubbed, the stains of blood and death were still there on the deck if you knew where to look. While she was no longer so certain she could or even wanted to go back to being a lady, even for an evening, playing sick wouldn't be difficult. All she had to do was stop pretending to be fine all of a sudden and the rest of the crew would buy it. And it would please Finn, and maybe give her a chance to check his shoulder, which he was still favoring, the idiot.

So it was that, shortly after they'd arrived in port, she lay bundled under an extra blanket in her corner of the crew's quarters with Dante doing a very good impression of being concerned, awaiting Finn's arrival.

Finn stood on the deck of the ship, hands shoved into the depths of his pockets as he leaned casually against the wall. He watched the men file down the dock, their joyous hollers carrying clear on the wind. He had to wait until every last man was gone...A few had asked if he was coming along, and he'd assured them he would, later. To caught up, they accepted the answer without question, but there were a lot of men to wait for...Absently, he whistled a tune, an old Sunderlander children's rhyme, to pass the time. When the wintry forest makes no sound, the Wolves are coming here. Had he been paying attention, his subconsciously chosen song would have surprised him. Did he believe in the fae and wolves of old? Sure; it was almost impossible not to. But even given the drastic turn of events a year past, Finn had never given the legends or threat much thought.

Finally, to his knowledge, the ship had emptied of all but himself and Rose. With a grin, Finn quickly retrieved the clothing he'd hidden for Rose, and then made his way through the ship to where they'd agreed she'd be. Without announcing his presence, Finn ducked into the vicinity, grimacing as Rose came into view. But it wasn't Rose or Dante he made the face at. It was her cat, a new addition to the small zoo she seemed to be accumulating. Finn had never been known to favor cats; he didn't fear them, just...didn't trust them. Sneaky bastards.

Clearing his throat, he turned his attention instead to Rose, refusing to allow the company of the feline to ruin his evening. "Here ye are." He tossed her the bundle of clothing, and then procured two gilded masks from his coat pocket. "An' this; te hide yer face, an'...fer the fun." He said with a wink, tossing her one of the masks. He slipped his mask over his eyes, and then turned to allow her a moment of privacy to change...something he hadn't offered her when they'd first met.

It had taken long enough for the men to clear out that Rose had nearly fallen asleep under Lyric-the-grimalkin's warm, watchful, purring weight. She was a dreadfully big cat as all grimalkin were, and stretched from her hip to her shoulders where she was kneading kitty biscuits into the blanket contentedly. At the sound of Finn's voice she twitched in surprise, then sat up to examine his offerings. The dress was by far the nicest piece of clothing she'd seen since she'd been forced to steal clothes for herself back in Sunderland at the behest of the handsome-yet-irritating pirate who was now... giving her privacy? Why, when he'd never bothered before would he... Oh, hells with it, she'd take the small victory however bizarre it was.

Dante also politely turned away, scratching the top of his head where antlers were just beginning to bud against his foreleg. The constant itching was a trial, but he was looking forward to being a proper buck once they grew in- and it was nice when Rose scratched there.

A few rustles and a rather unladylike grunt or two and Rose cleared her throat to signal him to turn around. The dark green of the dress made her skin look less sun-browned and windburned, and when she pulled back her hair in a quick but elaborate-looking bun and pinched her cheeks and nibbled her lips to redden them, she looked just like a lady of the court. She donned the mask, a small, but sincere, smile gracing her features. "It's gorgeous, Finn, thank you. I don't even want to know what you had to do to get it," she teased with a smirk.

The rustle of satin accompanied sounds he garnered she never would have made before meeting him, and he stifled a laugh as he glanced over to see Dante was also allowing his chosen a moment of privacy. At her call, he turned to appreciate her new look, whistling long and low. After months of pants and sunburns, he wouldn't have recognized the woman standing before him had he not been present for the transformation, especially once she adorned her mask. "No, ye don't." He chuckled, offering his arm. "Now c'mon, before the mates drink up all the booze!"

Leaving Dante and Lyric free to follow, and pocketing Doubloon, Finn whisked Rose from the room, pulling her along hurriedly through the ship and down the docks. Ahead, in the town's square, hoots and hollers, shrieks of laughter and screams of delight intermingled in the air with soul lifting tunes that encouraged dance and merriment. At their arrival, Finn halted their approach at the edge of the crowd, allowing a moment of observation.

The square was flooded with bodies, beautiful and grotesque in their colorful garb, everyone unrecognizable behind their masks. The promise of anonymity elicited behavior normally inappropriate, but here, it seemed everything was fair game. Everyone came together in a frenzy of activity, forgoing social norms and relationships to drink, twirl, and kiss under the light of a full moon. Friends bickered and foes engaged in acts of passion, turning everything upside down. Finn grinned, his eyes twinkling behind his mask.

"May I 'ave this dance?" He shouted to Rose above the ruckus, releasing his hold on her so he could face her, and offer his hand properly. His grin was wicked, a promise of all things mischievous.

"How could I refuse?" she asked, taking his hand and letting him spin her out among the dancers. Dante caused a bit of a stir when he tried to follow. He was not exactly small, but he was polite, gently but inexorably pushing his way through the crowd to stay close to his Chosen. Lyric, meanwhile, had vanished, but that wasn't particularly unusual. She was, after all, a cat.

When was the last time she'd been dancing? It seemed a lifetime ago that she'd been to her last ball, and this certainly wasn't that. Far from the staid, measured affairs of her homeland, this was an exuberant, joyous celebration. It felt more alive, more... real. She wasn't sure when the traditions and culture of her homeland had begun to seem stale, but she suspected it was on a rainy night several months ago.

She took his hand, and he spun her into the crowd, allowing the music to take hold. It was jovial and infectious, promising the sweet ache of exhaustion come dawn. He moved nimbly, his footsteps spry and expressing a talent one might not initially assume. He twirled and dipped her effortlessly, watching her skirts fan out as he spun her away, and then grinned each time he pulled her back into his arms. Vaguely, he recognized a dull pain blooming across his shoulder, the muscles tight with spasms. This was, of course, promptly ignored, as he would never allow a wound to slow him down.

How much time passed, he couldn't be certain, but when he finally began to slow, they were lost deep within the crowd, their world nothing but rolls of satin, colorful masks, manic movements and haunting tunes. It was an entirely different world, and Finn wasn't sure he would be able to find his way back to the ship if he had wanted to. But he was parched.

"Say we find somethin' te drink?" He shouted over the music, his arm slipped protectively around her waist. If he let her go, he was afraid he might lose her to the swirling mass, and unless Dante was a bloodhound, he was sure she'd be lost for good. Of course, with his eyes locked so intensely on her, he failed to notice the group of eyes watching them...

"Absolutely!" she agreed, her arm about his waist as well, out of her own fears of being swept away in the crowd like a silken, rainbow storm-tossed sea. She wasn't even sure she remembered what port this was, let alone how to get home. That would be a hell of a thing, one she very much wished to avoid.

Dante continued his grim vigil, ears pinned back against the din and yellow eyes narrowed in a suspicious glare which he leveled at anyone who seemed too interested in the couple. The little knobs of his antlers-in-potentia were not strictly speaking an intimidating sight, but he did as best he could. One of the revelers decided to get cute and impress his date, slinging his cape around the buck (who already looked a bit like he was wearing a tuxedo, and tying it around his neck while Dante was still deciding if this was enough of a threat to warrant trampling the man, or if Rose would shout at him again.

Rose giggled at the buck's expression and beckoned him onward, though, still leaning companionably against Finn's good side. They made their way out of the crowd to a marginally quieter side street where vendors were plying various sorts of spirits and the types of food appealing to the drunk. "Here we go. We should get something to eat, too," Rose said in a more conversational tone. "I'm starved. How's your shoulder holding up?" she asked, finally remembering his injury again as the euphoria of the dance faded.

              Shady Maru

Finn was not oblivious to Dante's demeanor, and while he appreciated the protective stance the guardian took, he did feel it was a little unwarranted. The pirate was certainly protection enough, he thought, and no one present was here with the intent to harm! It was a party! The little guy needed to learn how to loosen up and enjoy himself. As he was just glancing back at Dante with this thought, and jovial patron draped his cape over Dante's back, clipping it securely around his neck. Finn barked with laughter, the sound loud even over the deafening music and delight. "Ah Dante, an' 'ere I thought ye couldn' git more dashin'!" He leaned around to thump Dante on the shoulder, still laughing. "It's a good look, it is."

With Rose securely at his side and Dante right behind, the trio edged their way through the tightly packed crowd, the vendors in sight. Once they were allowed some breathing room, Finn loosened his grip, but still left his hand on the small of Rose's back. When she mentioned food, he nodded eagerly, and began perusing the options. Everything available was easy to hold and eat on the go, battered, fried, and smothered in sauce. Mouth watering, he tossed a few coins toward buying them some skewered meat, and handed Rose her share.

He was just about to tear into his meal when she inquired about his shoulder. Seemingly subconsciously, he rolled the injured shoulder, testing its stiffness. "Fine. Really." The emphasized the last bit, because he knew she would doubt him. It was still sore, but that was to be expected. It really wasn't anything to worry about at this point. "What about ye? Is this..." He waved his skewer at the dancing crowd. "Anythin' like yer parties back at 'ome?" He grinned cheekily, knowing it couldn't possibly be.

As expected, Rose sighed and gave him a skeptical look, but let it pass for now- there wasn't anything she could do for him in the midst of this crowd, anyway. At his question, though, she grinned. "No, I've never seen anything quite like this," she admitted a touch giddily as she accepted her food and took an appreciative bite. At that, Dante quit glaring daggers at Finn and twitched his ears happily; his ward hadn't been eating properly of late, and if the pirate got her to eat, perhaps he could be forgiven for his teasing. A little. Maybe.

The vendor also included cheap clay mugs of surprisingly good wine with their purchase, as was apparently the custom at this particular festival, with a refund for returning the vessels unbroken. Rose passed one to Finn and kept one for herself. The former noblewoman sniffed the contents curiously and took a cautious sip before smiling in approval.

Perhaps because of the Guardian's newly less-murderous demeanor, perhaps because of the cape, or perhaps because of the copious quantities of wine flowing like water all around them, another patron decided to get brave. Despite the deer's creepy, glowing eyes and the spooky stories whispered about Sunderland's guardians, the masked man decided to drop a crown of silken, deep-red roses atop Dante's head. It was quickly turning into the world's most hazardous game of pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey as the young buck's temper frayed. But then Rose cooed in delight over the flowers and gave him a kiss on his velvet nose, and Dante's ears came back up. Perhaps the cape and flowers weren't so bad after all, if his Chosen liked them?

Rose fairly wolfed down her food, in much too good a mood to think about the things that had been stealing her appetite of late. She was tucked companionably against Finn's shoulder as Dante stood grimly vigilant, protecting them from the worst buffeting of the crowd as the tide of revelers and satin flowed by them. She finished first, but was content to tuck her arm around Finn's waist for extra security and people-watch while he ate and she emptied her mug of wine. When he was done, she looked up at him with a bright smile. "What do you want to do now, handsome? More wine? Dancing? Watch a show?" she pointed to one of the stages set up in the square where performers had been cycling through every quarter-hour or so.
