User ImageIt was a bright, sunny day out. For once the power of the sun lent warmth with its light, signaling that a change in seasons was upon them. The wind still had a cold bite that snatched at the warmth, but Alain was working inside today, so he only received the balm instead of the bane. He was moving through his more delicate roses, carefully pruning them. Buds or useful things went in a bag at his hip and the rest was discarded in a basket at his feet to be turned into compost. His outside roses could use a fertilizing soon, now that they showed signs of life.

It was quiet in his hothouse, the only sounds being the ones he made as he handled the plants and the occasional gust rattling the glass when the wind randomly picked up. His normal expressions, frowning or polite masks, were gone, replaced by gentle, caring concentration. It was a face he only showed to his roses and sometimes his family, though lately there was one outside his bloodline who'd been allowed to see this expression as well. That particular person just happened to be on his mind at the moment.

Alain wondered how Kafei was doing right now. She'd been visiting him regularly the last couple days. They would have tea and just talk. Sometimes they did things together. He would show her how to care for roses, or if the weather was nice they would go for walks. Sometimes they passed old structures or came across something that would draw Kafei's interest, and she would share her knowledge on the history of such things with Alain. It was a comfortable friendship. The only one he had, really, if he was going to be honest with himself. Yes, Korbin would come visit his hothouse, sometimes they'd exchange rose clippings or work on breeding a new color or species, sometimes she'd even talk. And yes, Belmonte liked to appear with a new book to talk about or to request flowers if there were any that needed cutting, and he chatted more than enough to make up for Korbin's silence. But they were siblings and he'd love them no matter what, so they didn't count. Neither did his mothers. No, what he had with Kafei was altogether something different, and there were some days he didn't know what it was they had.

The last couple days though, Kafei had been mostly absent. He worried a little, not that he'd admit it, and in the rare moments he was being honest with himself, he was even a tad upset. He had no reason to be. Kafei had a life of her own, with interests and responsibilities. Something had probably come up and she was busy. She gave him her time, it wasn't like it was his to claim or anything. Still, you think she'd stop by and let him know why she hadn't been around....

As though these thoughts were a summons, there came a light, familiar tap on the hothouse door. It swung open, letting in a gust of chill wind before it was pushed shut against the errant breezes with a soft thwumping sound and even softer click.

I figure maybe stuff happened before she goes to the dig that kept her busy, and now she's visiting to let Alain know she'll be gone for a long time. Backstory, 'tis up to you!

User ImageKafei truly loved her work. She was always intrigued about the mythology and customs that came before her. The different deity’s people had worshiped and how their culture influenced the world around them. It was why she had decided to become an archeologist because it was the fastest way to get out there and learn what she loved.

The fact that she could somewhat give her luck to the other students and archeologists to find great discoveries didn’t hurt either, even though half of the time it left her absolutely wiped out. However she was also generally good at it as well. Of course unfortunately it also interfered with her social life. She had been meaning to call but there was always just one more assignment that needed to be done. One more find to catalog and by the end of the day it was no longer acceptable to call and often she was just too tired.

Of course this was no longer an option, because Alain deserved to know why she had seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth, especially since she had been given the okay to move to a new dig site. One that was actually a fair distance away from here… In another country even. So she had paid for the taxi to take her out here and she would catch up with Alain to let her know what had been going on and why she wouldn’t be around for a marvelous session of watching him tend his roses and talking over tea.

It was unfortunate that she also wouldn’t be able to share all the info she had learned on ancient species of roses either. It hadn’t originally been something she had been interested in, but Alain’s eyes light up when she mentioned them as a topic, that and ancient tea. So of course Kafei spent all her free time at that moment catching up her knowledge about the subject. Well there was always later now all she had to do was brush out any wrinkles in her clothing, knock to make sure she didn't startle him or anything and walk through the door, which she did moment later. "Hello Alain, sorry its been a while."

Alain looked up as the cold air swirled through his hothouse, a frown on his lips and a crease upon his brow to indicate his displeasure at the intrusion. He needed to add a buffer room so the outside climate couldn't leak in.

Familiar colors jumped at him. Pale brown streaked with darker brown, colors which made green eyes appear all the more startlingly bright. His frown lines vanished and he actually smiled. It was a small thing, a barely noticeable uptwitch of the lips, but it was his true smile, not like those fake, meaningless things he would paste on simply for the sake of manners. He turned his head back to the plant he was currently pruning and finished the branch he held in his hand while he spoke.

"It most certainly has been! Were I any less a gentleman I would be quite put out at going so long with nary even a note."

He glanced up and smiled again to let Kafei know he was joking. His humor was largely sarcastic after all, so it could be misunderstood if he wasn't careful. He rolled the rose hips into his bag and set down his pruning sheers, brushed his hands over the discard basket, then began stripping off his gloves. "Would'st thou like something warm to drink," he asked, slipping briefly into an old-fashion mode of speech. It was something he had picked up from his mother and grandfather, a way of speech common in his kit days that he had grown out of. He tended to lapse slightly back into it on occasion, but only when extremely upset or at ease with the presence of those around him.

Couldn't find the plot we had in mind for these two on Skype, but I vaguely recall what we were gonna do so jotting it down here for reference and to iron out any details you might want to add or edit.

I believe we were going to have it that Kafei tells Alain she's going to be gone for a pretty long stretch of time for this dig, Alain has a bit of an internal crisis, then when Kafei is about to leave he pretty much shows up like, "I'm going with you" and tries to blow it off like he's heard about an interesting species of rose where Kafei is going and he wants to go examine them. Maybe slip in a bit of cute with a muttered little comment about part of the reason he's going is for her. I don't think we planned to roleplay at the dig site, but I could just be forgetting XD

Did I catch everything?
