Thranduil's cloak billowed behind him as he tore through Mirkwood Halls. The thickly grown trees that led to the cave system were immaculately groomed and tended over generations to both conceal the entrances of the halls as well as form an intricate series of pathways near the Eastern border of the wood.
Thranduil barely gave the ancient trees that normally gave him a sense of pride and serenity a second glance. His notorious temper was blazing hot, and his cheek still ached and stung from where the dragon had dealt a parting blow. He had seen the healers, and a few of his men were still spending time with them, but the king did not have time to lay back and kick up his hooves in convalescence. He didn't care that the unsightly and fragrant poulstices were still pressed into his cheek.
How had matters gotten as badly as they had before it was brought to his attention? How had the damn dwarves heard about the menace lurking just at the edge of his territory before he had? And where in the HELL was Tauriel? She should have been with them. Having another competant elf on their side during the battle might have meant that they wouldn't have suffered losses. Might have meant that Thranduil himself wasn't injured. She was a captain of the guard - it was her DUTY to help defend the borders of Mirkwood. But no, when he had gathered up the others, she was nowhere to be found. She certainly wasn't within Mirkwood.
"YOU," He all but snarled at a young stag who was unfortunate enough to come across, "Have you seen Tauriel?"
The stag stopped in his tracks, ears laying back, "My lord... I heard she was by the River... to the Wes-"
He barely finished his words when Thranduil spun around on his hooves and set off at a gallop, the young stallion breathing a sigh of relief as the king's temper was directed elsewhere.

Tauriel had failed twice that day. Unbeknownst to her there had been a third failure that had occurred in her absence but the unknown could hardly trouble her now. Instead, as she brought her mouth to the cool running water to quench her thirst, her thoughts lingered on the kalona she had spent the day pursuing. She had left early in the morning, on her own though she was meant to bring a team, to rid the lands of a single kalona mare. Tauriel had found the kalona easily near one of the borders or the land. The mare had fled out of the territory. Tauriel's first failure had been to entirely disobey her orders to keep their lands free of the filth of the world. She had chased the creature beyond the borders paying no mind to the cries of her fellows that had eventually caught up to her.
Her second failure had been in killing the kalona mare. The monster had escaped leaving Tauriel to return home knowing that she had not only disobeyed but also that nothing good had come out of her disobedience. She had returned to find that another party had been dispatched to another part of the territory not too long after Tauriel had gone after the kalona. Their king had been leading the group. She had only received the vaguest of answers about what had brought them out but if their king had been involved Tauriel know it couldn't have been anything pleasant. The fact that none that she spoke with seemed to have any answers added to the fact that their own king was with the healers when she inquired only supported her thinking.
Tauriel had not yet finished drinking, or thinking for that matter, when the sound of furious hooves drifted towards her ears. Tauriel straightened up immediately and looked towards the sound with an intensity that could rival a hawk's. Who was coming her way? Logically it wouldn't be a foe and yet she still readied herself for a fight.Sabin Duvert I'm sorry if this is a bit shitty but I've had a rather rough day.

"Tauriel - There you are!" Thranduil's temper preceeded him as he emerged from the treeline, his ears back and eyes flashing with anger. Gracefully, almost serpentine, he bounded closer to Tauriel, hooves finding precise purchase on the rocky banks of the river.
"I should not even need to inquire why you were not at your post, nor, apparently, anywhere within the borders of Mirkwood. When I summoned a party to join me your name was among those I spoke, and yet, you were nowhere to be found. Please, tell me Tauriel, that I was not mistaken in my judgment when you were given the rank of captain."
The wound on his face, bound in healing herbs, was evident, but even more so was the fury in his eyes.
Nisshou H Niss: No problem at all - Sorry you had a rough day! And it sounds great to me <3

When Thranduil came into her sights Tauriel immediate dipped in a bow. "My lord." She managed to say as he closed the gap between them. She slowly straightened into a stiff, respectful pose as he started in on her. Part of her had expected this encounter and yet she still found herself completely unprepared for it. She was beginning to regret her decision to not look in on him at the healers. She could see their work on the side of his face. Tauriel knew the efficiency of her kin when it came to medicine, however, she also knew the pride of their king. Had he walked away without that injury he likely would not have been so cross with her. As it was, Tauriel understood that she was in much hotter water than she would have liked to be in.
"My lord," she started keeping her voice as calm as she could manage, but still her words came out hesitantly. "I was hunting a kalona in another part of the wood. I did not mean to stray so far beyond the borders." Again Tauriel gave her head a quick bow low enough that the ends of her long, fiery mane brushed against the ground. She would not say anything to provoke the wrath of their king even further than she already had nor would she boast about deserving the rank of captain. It was not her place to decide these things. She did, after all, fall painfully low on the hierarchy. Sabin Duvert I'm going to try to reply as much as I can while her muse is still hovering around.

Thranduil's frown deepened as Tauriel's excuses poured out of her mouth. Kalona. Did they not aleady have enough troubles without their kind darkening Mirkwood with their presence as well? "I thought my orders were clear. Keep the beasts from our borders, but if they flee then they are no longer our business." His gaze was icy, despite the current squint in one of his eyes. "Unless you have my orders to pursue them beyond the edges of our territory then you are not to follow them out. Keep our lands clear. The instructions were simple."
He let the proclamation hang in the air for a moment before continuing, darkly, "I trust if you were so foolhearty to pursue the beast then you at least saw it dispatched?"

"Your orders were very clear, my lord." Tauriel confirmed not daring to meet his eye. She was not so bold as that. Look at him, yes, but never in the eye. She was also not so foolish as to argue precisely what his orders were. They all understood them. Tauriel just wished that she didn't understand that her king was demanding an answer for his final question. An answer that would not please him no matter how she said it.
Tauriel took a breath and braced herself for what was to follow. "I did not, my lord." She said clearly though entirely without pride. "It escaped." It had gone where Tauriel had dared not follow, not alone, and certainly not without orders. It had fled far from their borders and into lands infested with beasts just as bad if not worse than a lone kalona. Tauriel trusted her skill but not to that point. To follow it in there would have meant her certain death.
She wished it hadn't fled so. If she had managed to kill it perhaps her king would have been more forgiving than he was sure to be.

Silence hung in the air for an uncomfortably pregnant pause as Thranduil's eyes seemed to strip away the flesh from Tauriel's bones. "You traveled beyond our borders chasing down this ... kalona" he spat the word as if it were an expletive, "...without my leave, and you did not even succeed in putting down this threat."
He tossed his head, his great antlers on display.
"Tauriel, there is a reason for my proclamations. By leaving our lands you expose yourself as well as our kind as a whole. It shows weakness. You could have been followed back... or worse. There are vile forces on the move outside our borders. More than merely the filth of the kalona breed. I should not need to lecture to you like a filly. "

Tauriel's ears flicked backward as the silence set in. She could practically feel the burning look her king was giving her. It seemed to be only a blessed miracle that she didn't burn to the ground on the spot. Then Thranduil's voice interrupted the silence and Tauriel realized that bursting into flames may very well have been the better option. She had failed her king and her kin in more ways than she ever had before and it had only taken a single day.
"Yes, my lord. I know I have done wrong." Tauriel said earnestly but there was still some hesitation in her voice. She did not share Thranduil's beliefs that they should only watch their own borders. Yes, leaving could, and likely would, reveal them to the world. Yes, leaving left a gap in security for them all. Tauriel could not agree that it showed weakness though. If she had been killed then she would have been killed doing only what was right.
After a brief pause Tauriel decided that things likely couldn't get much worse for her at the moment. "But...I would not have allowed myself to be followed. I would have sensed them and stopped them." If there was a chance that she could convince their king that it was not so dangerous to venture out perhaps things could change.

Thranduil harumphed with another nod of his head as Tauriel admitted her fault in the matter. But his ears remained pointed backwards in disapproval and his eyes lingered scathingly on her. However, as her confidence grew and she dared voice her own, contrasting opinion on the matter, Thranduil's ire was stoked again.
"You have a task, Tauriel: Keep our lands clear of foul creatures. OUR lands." He emphasized the word with a stamp of his hoof, striking it against the rocks. "I will not have the sanctity of our kingdom threatened by your overconfidence. Traveling outside the borders of Mirkwood requires my sanction."
He paused for a moment to let that admonishment sink in before driving another in. She was being headstrong, defending her position. "Such as the other matter that would have demanded your asistance had you not been absent from your post. A real threat to our lands - a dragon encroaching on our borders; its vile influence extending into our land."

Tauriel's head dipped. She had overstepped her reach with that last statement. There would be no changing his mind on this matter. Worse than that, now he reprimanding her for the other creature that had slipped in while she was away. Again. "I am sorry, my lord." She said glancing up at the injury on his face before swiftly averting her eyes. Tauriel wanted to say more but she couldn't find anything else to say that wouldn't simply make things worse for herself. "It...it will not happen again. I assure you." sabin Duvert Eh heh heh...Tauriel where did you suddenly run off to? @_@

Thranduil watched the slender elven mare carefully, scrutinizingly as she dipped her head in reverence. That was better. He had not cared for the inkling of defiance she had shown him, questioning his judgement a moment before.
"Be careful that it does not, Tauriel." Thranduil emphasized with a veiled threat, "Remember, girl, other lands are not our concern. The fortunes of the world will rise and fall, but here in this kingdom, we will endure."
He tossed his silvery-blonde mane over his shoulder as he turned to dismiss her presence.
Nisshou H lol, sorry, I couldn't resist slipping a quote in there; it seemed appropriate X3

"Yes, my lord." She bowed her head and left hastily, she recognized dismissal when she saw it. She would not argue the point, but Tauriel could not see the point in living in a world surrounded only by ruin and shadow. One safe place in a world of darkness would quickly become no better than a prison or a tomb.Sabin Duvert *cackles* I love putting in actual quotes or at least referencing them. And I think that's a good stopping point, yes?

Thranduil snorted again as the elven mare dashed away, flicking an ear. He was still irritated, but for the moment, he decided to survey the rushing river and the peaceful, meditative sound it made as it coursed. Much like the elves themselves, the river would always be here, running its course, shaping the land around it slowly.
Nisshou H *Grins* Glad you approve xd - and I agree - it sounds like a logical wrap. Thranduil needed someone to verbally push around after he got his ego kicked in. And good establishment of Thranduil and Tauriel's dynamic.
