The sky was darkening by the time Sam returned to his makeshift home after a day of hunting. His pets' food and treat supply had needed a bit of restocking, but after the day's endeavors, they should be alright for a while longer, yet. Nothing eventful had happened all day long, so naturally Sam was just a touch bored. But before he even landed near the mouth of the shallow cave, he heard a high, angry growling noise coming from the inside. He hated to admit that, despite the time he spent with his animals, it was a noise he was unfamiliar with. With a curse on his lips, he landed and trudged inside, scowling. Of course the sound was coming from Azure, his angry, feisty, haughty little vlidean. He was fully prepared to tell her off. She should be getting used to his other pets by now, rather than snarling at them any time Sam wasn't around. But as he approached the words died before he had the chance to utter them.

Azure wasn't growling at Phalfa, Ruei, or even Spitfire, their newest companion. Instead she had her beak pressed against the rocky bars of her enclosure, hissing and spitting aggressively at some small, furry, four-legged creature that was peering up into Phalfa's cage with interest. When Sam's shadow graced the cave entrance, the young creature turned back to look at him. It was a baowi cub! And the instant it saw him it cowered, flattening itself to the ground and scuttling backward until it's bum hit the wall.

For a moment, Sam only stared at it in shock. Then he crouched down, pulled a strip of meat from his messenger bag and inched forward. "It's alright." He cooed softly, offering the morsel to the cub. "I'm not gonna hurt you..." Despite his sweetest attempts, the cub still scrunched away from him, mewling pathetically. It was pitifully small. Sam almost felt bad for calling forth his magic to encase it in a small tent of rock. He heard it squeak in alarm.

The only thing that fueled Levi's return to Eowyn was the thought that he'd get to be with Sam once more. Surely after so long apart, even the grumpy Gaili would be pleased to see him again? But when the Diabi landed in the clan's territory, he was abruptly informed that Sam had been sent away many days ago on a hunting trip to protect the clan from dangers. Despite wanting to tear the messenger's head off, Oblivion only scowled and growled out, "Well where did you send him?"
***
Useless, the lot of them! He'd wanted one thing on his way home, and he couldn't have it, because that group was stupid enough to think that Sam could single-handedly decimate an entire population. Levi snorted and rolled his eyes in annoyance as he flitted over the sand. If he'd been gone for moons, as they said, then he could be hurt, or... No. No, he wasn't. Sam wasn't an idiot. He'd probably found someplace to hole up in and take a bit of R and R. But locating him would be a real chore... He probably wouldn't leave the mountains. It was an area he knew and someplace he felt at home. So Levi started his search there, flying through the peaks and crags as he tried to catch sight or whiff of the Gaili.

But it was getting dark, and unlike Levi, Sam wouldn't be caught flying about at night. And if he was concealed in his cave, he'd be nearly impossible to find. Levi sighed. At this rate, he wouldn't find the Gaili tonight... But just when he was about to give up, a splodge of tan flitted down across the bottom edge of his vision. When Levi turned fully toward it, a two-legger with streaming light hair (and a tail!) was disappearing into a cave. The only two-legger Levi had ever encountered that strolled about like that was...

With a sudden stab of glee, the Diabi darted down to the cave entrance. Peeking his head in, he spotted his Gaili companion crouched on the ground, beckoning to something small and fluffy. And they were surrounded by... other creatures. The poor Khehorian must've been incredibly lonely without him! Levi stepped into the entrance, silently fluffed his wings and put on his most dazzling grin. "Sam."

Sam's Roll:
Step 2: Taming

When Sam heard his name (real words, not a bark or squawk!), he turned toward the entrance with wide, confused eyes. It had to be one of his clan mates... They'd found him and were ready for him to come home and rejoin them! However, instead of the dusty brown scales of a Gaili, his emerald orbs met with soft feathers, dark as night, and a pair of ruby red orbs staring at him in interest. Sam's breath caught. He was on his feet before he even had to think of it, and was moving with all deliberate speed toward the Diabi. "Levi..." Sam breathed as his fingers found the soft, thick feathers at the base of the Khehora's skull. He gave them a gentle tug as he dove forward to run his face along the smooth down lining the lop of Levi's snout.

Oblivion's heart hammered against his chest and he briefly lurched away from the onslaught, fearing the worst. No matter how wonderful and playfully devious Levi's advances were, Sam had never responded like this before. The Diabi was much more likely to receive a snarl than a hug... But as the strangeness of the situation set in, and it didn't seem to be causing Oblivion any pain, he leaned forward and nudged his nose under the Gaili's chin, pressing him smooth snout to Sam's neck. "I hadn't realized that you'd miss me so much..." He whispered softly, endearingly into the Gaili's ear.

Sam scowled, letting his arms drop away from the Alihora before him. "I didn't miss you." He informed Oblivion, looking to the dirt below as he stepped away. "It's just... Good to see you..." After being with nothing but animals for what seemed like forever. "Oh!" Sam gasped out in shock, turning quickly back to the baowi cub still helplessly concealed in an earth tent. "You made me forget!" Sam huffed out in annoyance, crouching down to release the small creature from it's enclosure. He spared a few moments to hunt down the treats again. Levi's appearance had really thrown him off his game...

As he offered the snack to the cub once more, it hesitantly approached his open palm, while Levi hovered curiously over his shoulder. "So what exactly are you trying to accomplish here?" He inquired, as he watched the furry cub take a strip of meat from between Sam's fingers. He glance from the cub to the rest of what very well could've been described as a menagerie. Sam sure had adopted an... interesting hobby in Levi's absence.

The Gaili shot a haughty glance over his shoulder. "This little one wandered into my cave. Poor thing. I wonder where it's mother is." After feeding it several strips of meat, the young cub began to accept other forms of attention, with Sam unable to help but notice that it seemed to appreciate belly rubs. He carefully scooped it up and transferred it to his lap, where he rubbed it's furry underbelly.

Levi didn't look convinced. "Did all off these guys lose their mothers?" He asked skeptically, staring into the vlidean's enclosure. The beast glowered right back at him. Levi almost believed that it was scowling...

"Don't be ridiculous!" Sam snapped, as he scratched beneath the baowi's chin. It seemed to like attention just a much as Azure... Luckily, she was a bit preoccupied with glaring Levi down. "I caught most of them. And trained them. They're... My friends." He muttered. Since no one else was around to fill the role. By now the baowi was comfortable enough to do a bit more roaming about the cavern. He still seemed a bit uncomfortable with Levi, and skittered by him with his little fluffy head down.

Levi was starting to have a weird, sinking feeling in his stomach. "And this one?" He asked, gesturing to the baowi that was trying to wedge himself between the rocky bars of the alkara's enclosure. "What are you going to do with him?" He was trying his absolute hardest not to grimace at the answer he was sure Sam would give. It wasn't as if he didn't like the strange little animals. In fact, he liked them very much. Liked to eat them. But caring for them was another thing entirely. Still, if it was something Sam wanted, he didn't have much of a choice.

"Well," Sam started, picking the young the up around the middle and scooting it away from Phalfa's pen. "I guess I'll have to train him." He tucked the cub under his arm when he open the alkara's pen. Of all his pets, Phalfa was probably the easiest to get acquainted with first. Both Azure and Spitfire were rather mean and could be quite loud... But when the Gaili raised an arm to call Phalfa forth, she glided over willingly, craning her neck out to sniff the baowi, who raised his head to sniff her in response.

Levi couldn't hold his tongue any longer. "Sam, baowi get much bigger than a vlidean or an alkara or an argaroo! You can carry and manage him now, but how long before he can break free?"

The Gaili rolled his eyes. "Weren't you listening? I said I was going to train him. Training doesn't go away just because he gets bigger. Levi." Sam turned to face him, his emerald orbs bright with the prospect of a new creature to add to his growing arsenal. "You have to trust me. I know what I'm doing."

Levi was still hesitant. "I do trust you." The Diabi insisted earnestly, trying desperately not to offend the more powerful, more emotionally unstable Gaili. "I just... Don't trust it. What if... what if there were eggs...?" He grumbled, not realizing what he'd said until he said it. Not that there ever would be eggs between he and Sam, but... Others of the clan! A baowi couldn't be trusted around youngsters. It was too dangerous! And as clan leader, Sam had an obligation to protect them...

Sam turned to glance over his shoulder, smiling broadly. "He'll protect them." The Gaili replied. But just to help ease Levi's mind, he set his two pets on the ground before he reached into his pack and pulled a a lovely, shimmering sapphire jewel. "Do you know what this is?" He questioned. Oblivion only shook his head. "It's a jewel with marvelous powers. It can help tame a feral animal! Coupled with my abilities, it's sure to be a success!" Levi didn't look convinced, but that didn't stop Sam. He rubbed the jewel between his fingers then placed it atop the young baowi's head.

Despite Levi's reservations (and no matter how much training Sam did, the Diabi would always have them), the baowi seemed more than capable of learning. At least as long as the proper amount of motivation was provided... Within just a few days, Sam could almost consistently make the cub sit, stay, come, lay down, and roll over. As long as Sam had a snack to offer, it would obey. It was still just a tiny tyke, so training it to guard eggs or support a rider was still quite a ways out of reach. The Gaili insisted that it's childish mindset was the only reason it wasn't completely obedient. And he assured Levi that taking a bit of time each day to reinforce positive behaviors would pay out once it was older. But for now it was best to enjoy a few fun activities with him. Let him (and the others) acclimate to the new setting. The baowi, who Sam now called Miel, was already particularly close to Phalfa. The alkara was gentle enough, and Miel small enough that Sam even felt comfortable allowing them to sleep and play in the same enclosure. For now, anyway. It would probably still be a while yet before Miel grew too big to share a home.
