Where: Busthind Mountain (Crypt)
When: Early Night

Though brief, the WACKY device certainly had an effect on Busthind's snow-capped peaks. The sudden flux of water resulted in a large landslide, which in turn revealed the entrance of an ancient crypt. A week had passed since the ruins were unearthed, and with nothing more frightening than a few cheese-beasts scampering out from its depths, the crypt seems (and smells) ripe for exploring!

Flashlight?

Check.

Grappling hook?

Check.

Rope for attaching to said hook?

Check.

Multi-purpose miniature explosives?

Check.

Delicious snacks, bottled water, chalk, flint, batteries, bandages, and rifle?

“Check, check, check, and check!” Kursha gave his rifle a twirl before thrusting it into the holster over his shoulder. Tonight was the night! He had been over his list several times already, checking and rechecking for anything that he might have missed. Anything could be inside those ruins - traps, monsters, gaping chasms, rickety bridges, pools of hot, bubbling lava* - and Kursha was determined to be prepared. There would be no going back once inside. Anything worth doing was only worth doing if he could get it right.

He looked up to where the Colonel roosted. She had situated herself on an outcropping ledge that gave her a panoramic view of the landscape below. Her sharp eyes were likely already probing the forest canopy for potential signs of danger. Kursha threw a salute.

“Colonel!” he called. “I'm going in. I'll report back in one hour!”

The lusus turned her long, serpentine neck around to face him. She made no sound, but instead stared the young troll down, eyes unblinking. Kursha fought the urge to fidget under that critical gaze. The colonel would notice even the slightest of movements and reprimand him for it. After a moment, she gave what looked like a curt nod then turned away again. Kursha breathed a sigh of relief. Though tests like that were a normality in his daily life, he hated them fervently. Still, the punishment the Colonel dealt out was far worse, so for the most part Kursha kept his mouth shut and held his anger close to his heart.

Just before Kursha stepped inside, he witnessed the Colonel raise her wings and then glide silently into the night sky, presumably to go hunting. Spitefully, he made a rude gesture at her receding silhouette. It was a good thing the entrance to the ruins was too small for her to comfortably fit through, or she might have sucked all the fun out of the expedition.

Glad to finally get a move on, Kursha pulled his torch from his backpack and pointed it inside the narrow opening, where the moonlight could not penetrate. The beam of light revealed a row of pillars as well as a pile of rubble near the left wall. Kursha shouldered his bag. “Here goes,” he murmured, then ducked inside.

*It was highly improbably that there would be lava beneath Busthind's icy peaks, but it was exciting to think about regardless.

"I'm not sure we're going the shortest way, Stagdad..." Luxara looked at the map again. She was sure that they should be heading down to the city instead of climbing through the mountains, but it seemed that this was just another instance of Stagdad's way or the highway.

He had probably looked at the map himself and somehow realized that they'd have to ride the train the rest of the way to Chittentown if they made it to New Hemisect. That or he wasn't happy about going to a troll-crowded area to begin with. The details didn't matter anymore anyways; they were going the way HE wanted, and that was the end of it. Luxara just sighed and leaned on the back of his neck. With every step, she bounced a little, and occasionally had to adjust her seat on his back.

With nothing else to do, she checked out their surroundings. For a tall mountain range, it seemed to lack snow. Wasn't there supposed to be all this hype about how perilous the mountains were, especially with the freezing temperatures and snowstorms? So...where was it?

Alternia had gotten pretty weird overall as of late, from what Luxara could tell. Four Fronds was covered in snow, for crying out loud.
Not that she was complaining. Making snowtrolls and pelting Stagdad with snowballs had been FANTASTIC. Snow falling off branches while she was trying to be sneaky around prey, predators, and trolls alike...not so much.
And it had been so COLD. Her big coat wasn't enough!
In fact, it seemed warmer up here than down there.
So bizarre.

Luxara was already squinting at the horizon for any caves they could hunker down in later that night before morning came along. If Stagdad couldn't get her to the train station in time, that pokey lusus, she'd have to be prepared!

As they trodded along, something caught her eye. A greenblood much like her was talking to their lusus, then disappeared into a hole in the side of the mountain! It wasn't big enough for Stagdad, but...

"Whoa!" She unceremoniously hopped off of her lusus. Luxara ran towards the chasm once the stranger's own guardian seemed out of sight. Could this be the kid's hive? It sure didn't look like one, but then neither did hers.
But the other child had all of this stuff that screamed 'adventure', from what she could tell.

To put it lightly, she was intrigued. Folding up and pocketing her map, Luxara looked at her bemused lusus. "I'm gonna check this out quick!"

He glared at her.

"Yeah, I know you can't come with me and it looks...a little shifty, but trust me! I learned from the BEST! So I'll be okay. I'm just gonna pop in then be right back? Okay?"

All Stagdad did was snort.

"What's the worst that could happen in a CAVE, anyways? I'll be back before you know it." She stroked the top of his snout and ruffled the sabretoothed buck's chest fur before she ducked into the cave. Maybe she could even find another opening big enough for Stagdad to join in! The possibilities were endless.

Luxara reminded herself to take it slow and be careful to not get stuck. Who knows how small or big a hole could get when it was part of a MOUNTAIN, after all!
That and she should probably be very careful around the other greenblood. They weren't, say, a highblood, which would've been a total no-go, but she was sure that she spotted the kid carrying some kind of weapon.
Odds like that weren't in her favor, and as friendly as she thought herself to be, it did always pay to be a liiiittle careful in times like these. Especially when someone has a gun and all you've got is a coat and not even a fussy lusus to back you up. Or a tree to hide in, even.

      [+] Kursha Vidari

The gap in the mountainside was maybe twice his height but very slender. There was just barely enough room for him to walk without his shoulders brushing against the tapered walls. Loose gravel crunched beneath his sandals. About six meters deep, the hole suddenly opened up into a medium sized chamber with a high ceiling. It was not a natural cave formation; the walls had been carved out and the floor was smooth. On the right side of the chamber stood three unadorned stone pillars stood. On the left there was only one, and half on another. The third pillar lay across the floor along with the shattered remains of half the other. Straight ahead was a smaller passage with steps leading downward. Where they led to though, Kursha could not be sure. The moonlight only reached so far.

Creeping forward, he flicked on his flashlight and shone it down the stairs. There were only about ten steps before the landing. The rest of the flight continued to the left, down and out of sight. Kursha had placed a sandalled foot on the step when suddenly he heard voices. Or rather a single voice. Someone was coming.

He turned, eyes darting to the pillars behind him. Making an instantaneous decision, he killed the power on his light and dove for a pillar. His eyesight had not quite adjusted though. In his haste he kicked at a piece of rubble. The stone block went clattering towards the entrance. Kursha hissed and bit his tongue to keep from crying out. For all his preparation, he had forgotten that sandals made really impractical spelunking footwear.

He tucked himself behind the middle pillar on the right. As he watched the entrance, he rubbed at his sore toe with his other foot. Really! To forget something so vital was so stupid!

Lemme know if you want me to tack on more to this. I was going to have him head deeper in then I realised that Luxara probably does not have a flashlight. Oops.

As Luxara shimmied her way in, she kept an eye on the battery-powered torch's faint light until- oh- it went out. Odd. It was too sudden to be someone leaving, and if the other kid had fallen or lost power, wouldn't he have made any noise about it? All she heard was a clattering. Minute and almost not worth mentioning. Hmmmm. As suspicious as she was, Luxara didn't backtrack despite being practically blind once she was officially in the cave.
She sidled to the closest wall, which was oddly flat and smooth for a cave of all things. But it was supportive. The little greenblood quietly patted around in front of her with one foot, checking for any rubble that might betray her presence or any footholds that could twist her ankle. Once she was in the clear, crouched and took a step. Slow, careful hunt-or-maybe-being-hunted mode. She could try to follow the one noise she heard, but that didn't really mean she'd find anything. It would leave her stumbling around in the dark, most likely. Then she'd be vulnerable. Yeah, bad move. Hmmmm...

Even as her eyes adapted to the pitch-black as best they could, she couldn't really see anything out of the ordinary. Well, couldn't see anything LIVING or moving, anyways But there was someone in here, or at least there had been. As she contemplated, she gripped a pebble. At a loss about what else to do, Luxara threw towards the other side of the cave entrance, opposite from where she came in, letting it clatter against the wall before ducking behind a pillar.
It was stupidly simple, but she hoped that making noise far away from where she was would get some sort of reaction thinking she was over by the rock. Assuming that whoever was around didn't have ecolocation or darkvision goggles or what-have-you. If that was the case, she sure did look like a moron, probably.

      [+] Kursha Vidari

For a moment Kursha saw a silhouette in the cave mouth; it was another troll, one that was maybe smaller than himself. He could make out little else though as the figure quickly retreated into the cool shadows of the cave. He tried to still his fast beating blood pusher. It seemed likely that someone else had seen him enter and decided to follow. For what reason though, Kursha could not imagine. He forced himself to take deep, slow breaths. If he stayed calm, he could take his opponent by surprise. Sooner or later they would screw up...

Off to his right there was a sudden clattering sound.

Like that.

Kursha sprang into action. Pulling his rifle down from over his shoulder, he leapt towards the origin of the noise. “Ha!” he laughed triumphantly. “I've found you out, you... whoa!” Where he expected to crash into a person, he only met air. Losing his balance he pitched forward. Then he stepped on a pebble. His foot slipped. He was falling. In an attempt to save himself, he dropped his gun and flung his arm out to grab at... at anything. The weapon clattered somewhere nearby. Kursha meanwhile crashed to the ground in an undignified heap.

If Luxara could see how much of a fool Kursha made himself, she would have laughed to the point of falling over. It would have been such a sad, sad sight. But, alas, it was too dark; there was the satisfaction in the other kid falling for her simple trick, though. Luxara's natural grin grew wide as she heard him make a huge racket. First there was his voice, an easy way to pinpoint where the other greenblood was exactly. Then there was the great 'whump' of him hitting the floor soon after that which confirmed he was in the same spot.

What interested her, though, was the distinct sound of something else falling to the floor. It sounded kind of like her rock, but she wasn't...sure. Luxara crept over to Kursha's little weapon, unaware of what it was or how it got there at first. When she picked it up, however, it didn't take much to figure out what she has holding, much less from the sihlouette. "Cool gun!" she enthused. "Why do you have it? Are you going after something? Does a monster live in here? That would be sooo cooool." Luxara prattled on as she wandered over to the Kursha lump at her leisure. She didn't get toooo close, though. He did try to jump her, after all. But that didn't mean she had to be rude, either. "Oh. Do you need help up? If you're not up already? It's hard to tell with how dark it is. It was silly to turn your light off n' hide. I just wanted to see what you were doing. This is so neat, though. I've never been in a cave before! Or the mountains," she added with pause. "There's a lot of stuff I haven't done. Huh. But I'm gonna be going to the desert so that'll be something else, too!" Luxara messed around with Kursha's gun when she wasn't seeing if the kid who tried to tackle her presence needed her assistance. "If I had one of these it would make hunting soooo much easier..."

That was so ******** stupid! He had made a buffoon of himself and lost his gun in the process. He could just die he was so embarrassed. And maybe he would depending on the type of company he had. Somehow that did not seem to make his situation any better though. Death in humiliation was not quite the way he expected to go.

Fortunately his opponent did not seem particularly interested in him yet. Instead she had located his rifle. Kursha tensed when he heard her speak. That gun belonged to him. The thought of someone else's grubby hands all over it... He swallowed his anger and his pride. Acting hastily could get him killed. He needed to play it cool.

Dusting himself down, Kursha got to his feet. “You bet...” he began and was promptly talked over. His opponent left no room for him to get in a word edgewise. Kursha was thankful that his scowl was hidden in the dark. “Provided you know how to use one,” he responded, tone irritable when she finished. Oops. He was supposed to be acting nice; not giving his opponent ammunition. Especially not when she had a gun and real ammunition.

He tried again. “There might be something in here. Or there might not,” he said. He sounded much more amicable. “Either way I like to be prepared. Now, if you don't mind? I'll get the light.” Kursha rummaged around his pack, and a moment later clicked on his flashlight. He shined it towards the other troll, appraising her.

It was impossible not to shield her eyes and squint with the light on her; but that's what she got for looking right into it. Luxara had to blink a couple of times to get the spots out of her eyes. At least she could see this kid in better detail, now. His markings were neat, at least from what she could see of them. And his hair sure was...interesting.

"Hey, we have the same kinda teeth!" Luxara noted, comparing her sharp fangs to his. "We're a lot alike already! Isn't that neat?" Both greenbloods with interesting teeth, hair that looked like a recuperacoon wreck, and a sense of adventure in their bodies. Yup, she already felt a kinship with this other child! "I guess since we're both here," she added, "we could check this place out together? Since...you don't seem to have your lusus with you either, huh? Yeah, then you definitely shouldn't go alone!" Luxara looked really eager to help. And she even had the gun pointed upwards so it wasn't pointing at anyone. Sometimes in the middle of her talking she'd try to spin it, but would have to manually use her other hand to get it going.

      [+] Kursha Vidari

Kursha made a disapproving sound in the back of his throat, as he swept his torch over her symbol. It was difficult to tell in the pale light light, but it almost looked like her blood colour was slightly greener than his own. He stared at it a moment longer, squinting. Without a direct comparison he could not be sure, but just the thought ticked him off. By such a marginal amount too! It was so unfair.

“Hm...” Shining the torch back on her face, Kursha considered the chatty troll before him. Whatever her blood colour was, he had lucked out in one regard: she was an idiot. Idiots were his favourite kind of person. Supposing there was some trap he could not bypass without assistance? Someone like her could prove useful. Someone... expendable. First though, he had to get his gun back.

Kursha grinned at the other troll. “Seems like fun. Why not? I'm Kursha.” He offered a hand—the one that was not holding the flashlight. “ Kursha Vidari, gunslinger, explorer and master of traps.” He paused for a moment to let that sink in. Even if she was an idiot, it was important to impress; maybe even more so.

With formalities complete, or at the very least their names traded, Kursha deposited his rucksack on the floor. Crouching down, he held the light so he could see inside. “Pass me back my rifle and I'll get you an flashlight. Promise I won't shoot.” He winked.

"Hi, Kursha!" She took his hand, and shook it jauntily. That's how trolls meeting each other worked, right? ENTHUSIASM! And if they were exchanging titles... "I'm Luxara! Seleni!" Last names were weird. "And I'm a hunter n' stealth-master but I don't sling guns so much but I sling shot! Haha!" She was funny. "Being a trap-master sounds cool, though. I'm used to keeping myself out of traps! Because why would I let myself get caught? I'm too young to die! Sometimes I wait for animals to set them off then take 'em, since, you know, it's lazy to use a trap to get your food anyways. And super risky! So I teach trap people that by grabbing and running," she shrugged. As she went on and on, she handed back the gun. He did PROMISE, after all.

His resume was impressive, so she supposed it was just a rare mistake that she managed to throw him off so easily earlier. He probably knew what he was doing, even if he was wearing sandals and shorts in a cave he intended to explore. Maybe he was just...hardcore or something. Either way, Luxara was happy to let him lead the way once he was ready to.

      [+] Kursha Vidari

Kursha rolled his eyes. His new companion sure liked to talk; he was beginning to regret having invited her along. But maybe had he not, she might have tried to follow him anyway. Then where would he be? He supposed he could have disposed of her in a more dramatic fashion but that would be a waste of bullets. Besides, he had already decided that given the right circumstance she might be useful. Not to mention he had given his promise—why did he do that? And why did she have to be so damn chatty?!

Having located his spare flashlight, Kursha pulled the drawstring on his bag and slung it back over his shoulders. “Huh. Sounds like stealing to me,” he remarked, unimpressed. “Here.” He passed her the flashlight in exchange for his rifle. “Remember to watch your step. Although I guess if you're as good at avoiding traps as you say, you should have no problem, right~?” Flashing her a sharktooth grin, Kursha turned and started down the steps.

For over a minute, the only thing their lights illuminated were the walls of a lonely, stone corridor. Kursha did his best to tune out Luxara's idle chatter, eyes scanning the sides of the passageway for anything that looked out of place. So far he had seen nothing unusual. A little below eye level a repeating pattern of angular groves ran along the walls. Spaced intermittently above the groves were brackets for torches, but the torches themselves were long gone. Below their feet the floor was smooth and small clouds of dust fled out from under their every step.

At last they came to a place where the passageway split. Curiously, the walls did not reach the ceiling, which had opened up to the roof of what looked like an enormous cavern, complete with stalactites. Without any frame of reference, it was hard to tell but Kursha estimated that the ceiling was about sixty feet up. The walls only reached maybe a quarter of that. As he swept his flashlight from left to right, he noticed that the walls had depictions of various wild beasts on them. Scuff marks scratched the floor. Strange.

“Hm...” He considered the path before him. After a moment, he unhitched his rucksack and pulled out a piece of chalk. He drew an arrow on the wall. “We'll follow to the right,” he said, slipping the chalk in his pocket. Without waiting for a reply, he stared down to the right. It was a short passageway that quickly curved to the left. As Kursha peered cautiously around the corner he snorted.

“Amateur,” he remarked, shining his torch over a faintly glinting tripwire. He passed his light down the rest of the passage. It illuminated nothing more than tiled floor and a continuation of the animal murals along the walls. “Watch your step,” he advised, stepping over the wire and onto the tiled floor beyond.

Luxara shrugged at the stealing comment. "They didn't work that hard for it n' I call it cheating to have something else do the work FOR you. So I guess stealing evens out the cheating." Anything to get back at the highbloods without getting culled for it, really.

The little greenblood wasn't used to dust; she coughed and hacked when it first floated on up in clouds. Kind of like being attacked by pollen spores, but...mustier. "Eggghh...traps, no problem; stuff that gets in your throat like that, not so much." She'd have to start hiding the lower half of her face whenever dust storms rolled up again.
Besides that oops, however, she stayed in step with Kursha. While she moved, Luxara mainly scanned around for any traps. It wouldn't be good to trip any! Especially right off the bat! The only time she'd look around at the scenery and ancient art would be after stopping on a safe part of the floor. And, more likely than not, she'd stop if Kursha did first. Otherwise, she didn't want to hold him back or fall behind.

Out of everything so far, she was most fascinated by the scratches on the floor. "Hmmmm." Luxara was a hunter and had played tracker a few times, and had watched her lusus do it more than she could count. So, marks like this... "Do you think something might be in here?" she asked. Meanwhile she was fine following him when he made an executive decision about their path.

When Kursha pointed out the tripwire, she just grinned a bit more. Amateurs indeed. Luxara ran and hopped over the wire, her coat flying behind her as she did so. She landed on by Kursha, and her coat tails went limp beyond where they could trigger the trap. Ta-da.

Shining her flashlight on the tiles ahead of them, she caught a couple of dummy pieces of floor that would likely trigger something else. "Watch yourself cuz they're not messing around. I wonder if they're gonna have stuff that's back-to-back-to-back like trip wires with floor traps right after them and nets planted for anything that looks like it's a safe place to walk." She said, cheery as ever. Danger is fun!

      [+] Kursha Vidari

“Maybe,” Kursha mumbled, swinging the light of his torch over the walls. His eyes darted from one image to another. Maybe there was some kind of pattern, a clue that once deciphered would reveal to them what secrets lie ahead. A moment later he seemed to register Luxara's words. He let out a short bark of laughter. “Why? You scared?” he asked, flashing her a grin. It would be fun he if could rattle her.

Still, there was something to be said for this greenblood. Avoiding a trip wire was easy, but she had taken care to make sure that her coat did not catch on it. That made him think that she had experience. Perhaps she was more than hot air.

“Oh please,” Kursha said, rolling his eyes. “This place is ancient. The traps can't be that sophisticated. Besides...” He thumbed back towards the wire trap. “What kind of trap master would open with something like that? It's like warning intruders to keep their lookstubs open. Come on.”

Careful to avoid the dummy tiles that Luxara had pointed out, Kursha continued down the hall. As he did, from somewhere there was a faint click, so quiet that it might have been a drop of falling water. He immediately froze, straining his sponge clots. Aside from the sound his breathing, it was silent. Everything was still. After a moment he shrugged it off as nothing. His thinkpan must have been playing tricks on him.

Up ahead, the path split into two again. Pulling out his chalk, Kursha drew another arrow and took them to the right. Aside from a pressure plate and a couple of thin slits in the walls, which the pair avoided with ease, there were no other traps. It was almost disappointing.

“So,” Kursha began, breaking the silence. “You said you've never been to the mountains before. It's kind of a weird place to vacation, don't you think? Cold, lonely, desolate... I guess if you're into skiing...” He rolled his eyes to emphasise his contempt for the sport. “But it's not all bad. There's a lot of excitement if you know where to look. Old ruins, bandits, wendigores, lost tombs like this... oh. Dead-end.”

They had indeed reached a dead end. There seemed to be no reason for it. The passage just suddenly stopped. On pure impulse, Kursha scratched an 'X' into the wall. While redundant, it did make it feel more official. Unperturbed by their lack of headway, Kursha turned to go back the way they came. When they reached where the path had initially split, he drew an 'X' over his previous arrow, and drew another arrow going the opposite way.

The second passage had no traps at all, though it wound back and forth in a tight zigzag. Kursha feigned a yawn. “This is sad. Do you think they expected the first few traps to take out any intruders?” If that was the case, then this was turning out to be a complete waste of his time. Any idiot could dodge traps of that low caliber. Any treasure this place held would be long gone.

“Oh! Over there!” Kursha skipped on ahead. They had reached another dead-end but at the base of the wall there was an object of interest. Or rather several objects; a skeleton to be exact. “Looks like you were right about there being something in here,” he sniggered. “Too bad it's already dead.” He picked up a snapped rib for examination. Though light, it was longer than his entire arm. Whatever creature had died here had been a monster. Secretly he was a little relieved not to face it. There was no way he would ever admit that though.

“Well, nothing for it but to retrace our steps and take the other way.” Chucking the bone behind him, Kursha started back down the winding passage. Aside from the occasional remark from Luxara, the trip was uneventful. Kursha drew another 'X' over his arrow when they reached it, and then lead the the way around the dummy tiles and back over the tripwire. As he turned the corner to the right though, he frowned. There was the first arrow he had drawn, and up ahead, the path continued like before but...

“There should be a passage to the left here—the way back towards the entrance.”

"Nah, I'm not scared," she said, her grin kind of softened from contemplation. "I'm trying to figure this place out, like the illustrations and why they wanted to keep people out and maybe they went ALL THE WAY or something for that. Who knows." That would be super fun, actually. The adrenaline of the hunt was always exciting, especially when it got down to the wire! Although...Stagdad wasn't her to save her if she needed it. But this other greenblood didn't have his lusus, so obviously he'd need to trust her as much as she would him to get out of any jams. Right? Right.

She could only shrug when Kursha tried to debunk her thoughts on the traps. "Maybe." But she wasn't sure. At the same time, she wasn't able to pull her thoughts together on the matter. Not with the noise that soon followed. She stopped almost in time with Kursha, and quickly let her torch light scan around for any source, or explanation for what happened. Nothing. NOW she was on guard.

But before she could say anything about it, Kursha was tossing in some idle chit chat. "Yeah, I dunno why anyone would vacation up here when Four Fronds is the big thing. For, er, the high bloods, anyways." She wrinkled her nose a little at that. "They've got EVERYTHING, the spas, the lake, the live troll hunts..." Her voice seemed to go into a mocking sarcastic tone. "High society!" Bitter? Who was bitter? Pfff.
"Wendigores?" THAT sounded neat, though. She watched Kursha do more chalkwork at their dead end. "I wanted to take a train to Chittentown because SOMETHING'S going on right now. I got mail about it! But Stagdad wanted to take the high way. And then I saw you doing something cool, so I guess I'm kinda getting back at him for being a butt by doing other stuff my way." Luxara contemplated aloud with a large smile. She quieted down when Kursha started criticizing the place again...and her grin widened at the rotting carcass. Or, really, what was left of it. "I've seen wild stuff that big before! But I dunno if it's EXACTLY anything I've seen but. It looks really cool! I wonder how it might've died...maybe starving?"

She followed along otherwise. It was nice that he would announce these things. And then, the obvious. "Well, it seems it's not there anymore. D'you think that might've been the noise earlier?" In a place full of subterfuge, she wasn't terribly surprised that something like this happened. But then...what could have happened to block them from going back to the entrance? She hadn't tripped anything, as far as she knew...

"I think this place is messing with us. Like, actually MESSING with us. But all we can do is play along, right? So I think going forward we should be REALLY careful. Ah! Here, even!" She put her flashlight in her mouth horizontal-style, and tied the long tail of her coat around her waist so it wouldn't drag anymore. "This is fun, though," she added when the torch was back in her hand, "and I'm glad you let me come with! Shall we keep moving?"

Not like they had a choice. Neither of them was strong enough to mess with the new wall, and she was hesitant to touch it anyhow.
