A cool breeze rustles the stubby dune grass, as sand and scrubland stretch out for miles around you. The night is young, and the desert is vast.

FIRST NIGHT

Everyone in your group is well rested.

The feeling of another oncoming WACKY weather system prickles your skin. With a feeling of dread, you brace yourself for the effects of… A soothing, balmy breeze. Aaah…
This weather effect will remain in play until the next dice are rolled.

Something glinting over a bluff catches your eye. A burrow in the side of the dune yields a bounty of shining golden beetles! And as they say, lucky beetles mean good fortune (and megabux$$$).
Each member of the group has acquired 1 lucky beetle that can be redeemed at the end of the meta for a variety of rewards. You cannot carry any more than 5 lucky beetles total; if you run into this encounter more than 5 times, you cannot collect any more.

A thick translucent blanket of dust appears ominously on the horizon. It looms closer and closer until finally a distinctive wind whips around its waves of sand and dust, creating a suffocating climate for everyone inside of the storm.
This weather effect will remain in play until a 1, 3, or 5 are rolled on a D6.

2,2

An overenthusiastic bouncebeast hops into view. You don’t pay it any mind at first, but when it starts to get closer—and closer—you realize that spring is in the air. The lovestruck beast assaults your group!
The bouncebeast has 1 HP, but has a +1 to avoid being hit (you will need to roll a 4 or above to hit). Every post in which the lovestruck bouncebeast has not been defeated incurs 1 point of damage to the group (as it wounds the group’s dignity in trying to hump their legs).

The pitter-patter of drizzly rain dot the sand with dark freckles. It’s pleasant at first, but soon the rain picks up pace. A roar of rolling thunder heralds a torrential rainstorm! Soon thick, heavy raindrops coat every surface in sight.
This weather effect will remain in play until a 1, 3, or 5 are rolled on a D6.

Upon encountering a heap of weather-ravaged rubble, you spot a familiar hoppity stump laying on the ground. Whether it’s a sign of the dangerous WACKY weather is irrelevant – any troll knows that bouncebeast hooves bring good luck!
Your group has acquired a lucky bouncebeast hoof! The hoof can be used to reroll one dice roll during the meta. When the use of the hoof has been announced, the most recent roll is thrown out and can be re-rolled. The lucky bouncebeast hoof is then discarded from the inventory.

Little pebbles of ice fall in sheets from the sky, and soon the little pebbles feel like veritable chunks of gravel, knives, and a bad case of hypothermia. The ice storm doesn’t seem like it’s going to let up—at least, it looks that way through the blinding shards of frozen awfulness that completely obscure your vision.
This weather effect will remain in play until a 1 or a 6 are rolled on a D6.

Passing through the desert, the only thing that is particularly interesting is the grim landmark of a set of lusus bones half-buried in the desert sand. This is not the lusus you’re looking for! Carry on.
Look, there’s a little troll skeleton beside them... Aww!

You find a peculiar desert creature snuffling around in the sand! The poor little guy seems pretty bewildered by all of this weather stuff, so you decide to give it a warm pocket to cling onto.

Regina adjusted the hooded cloak that covered her face, and tugged a little at her poncho. The symbol on it was dark blue, just a few swirls and splotches she had vaguely painted on before scaling down the window from her royal block and running off to join the fun. As always, she was in cognito, posing as one "Comuta Habtum". She had figured that her blood colour would be high enough, but to her (rather disgruntled) surprise, one of the little grub babies left in her care was a purpleblood. Well. Whatever. Fine. She turned to the group once they had trekked a little ways from the drop off point, and folded her arms.

"So! What are all y'alls names? I'm ... Comuta, you can call me Commy if you want. Think of me like your lusus while we're out here, 'cuz this-" She tapped the handle of her sabre lightly, and it rattled under her poncho. "-is all that's between us and all those big, scary, vicious, slavering, totally insane desert ghosts out there. You know. The ones that eat grublings alive."

Regina always believed in starting things off friendly.

Tamiya sized up the blueblood in front of her. She was dressed light in comparison to her normal garb, prepared for the desert and whatever else may ensue. Kabukidad had made sure that his little wiggler was safe, setting her up with the seemingly benign group of trolls. There was a good spread of blood colors, at least. It would be good for her cultural upbringing. The purpleblood's make-up lent to her dour expression. At least the desert was (of course) deserted. Very little trolls, spirits, or anything to fuel the chaos of -- wait, desert ghosts?

TAMIYA KNEW NOTHING OF DESERT GHOSTS.

The little girl blinked rapidly, her hands shooting to knead themselves within her long sleeves. She was trying as much as possible to think of what Kabukidad would say in this instance - surely he'd know about desert ghosts. Why didn't he tell her about them? Was this some sort of a test?

"I-I haven't heard of desert ghosts before..."

She felt a choking in her throat. Tamiya had not prepared to appease spirits in the desert. And if the WACKY was as unpredictable as she thought, they'd be VERY disturbed. She would have to improvise. Immediately she began shuffling around in her bag.

"I am Tamiya. It is a pleasure, Com... Comuta," The sound felt strange on her tongue for some reason. But! With a blueblood knowledgeable about ghosts (and not one of those nonbelievers always in danger of being swallowed by the abyss) she would certainly come in handy. Tamiya nodded in affirmation as she procured a small jar of herbs, tossed a pinch on the ground and stomped on it thrice. Ready to go.

Alexin was dressed today in a solid pair of boots to keep sand out, along with a cloak that their lusus had repeatedly draped over their head until they deigned to wear it. The cloak itself was a dull grey, but their long-sleeved shirt was a soft black with their symbol proudly displayed in cerulean. They looked around at the group furtively. They were a good mix of blood castes, which was just right for a hero group - because their group was going to win the lusus and be the HEROES!!!! (exclamation points very important.)

"I'm Alexin." They volunteered, grinning and rocking on their heels. "Nice to meet you, Commy, Tamiya." A pause and then they spoke again, to commy. " I like your sabre. Swords are awesome." There was a little bit of fervor in that last sentence, a suggestion that it was more than a compliment, that it was a belief. Which it was, of course. All the best heroes have swords.

In terms of the attempted scare, Alexin didn't really care. They were HEROES - what could happen?

[ Sinter choked back a whimper. What was he doing surrounded by all these highbloods!? He knotted the net in his hands tightly, willing himself to stop only when he realized the motion was causing his bells to jingle. Normally the sound brought him comfort, but right now, he didn't want anybody to look at him.

He pawed at the ground with a boot while everyone introduced themselves. His lusus was out there in the desert somewhere like she normally was. He wondered if they'd find her while they were out hunting. He missed her. And he wasn't entirely on board with the idea of this... Comuta being Lophie's surrogate.

Sinter looked up from his shoe when he realized the talking had died down. He blinked in surprise before speaking.

"O-O-Oh! I'm- I'm Sinter Heilig. I'm... Um..." Sinter looked around. Should he say anything else? Sinter liked swords too, but Alexin had already said that, and Sinter didn't want to be a copycat... Maybe he could... What if he...?

And the moment passed. Sinter ducked his head back down, occupying himself with untangling his net, and jingling gloomily.

Right, names, names. Reginas eyes glazed over as her brain directly filed the information into 'temporarily useful'. After a few second of that, she straigthened up and gave a lazy salute. "Ok, well I'm assming this is all the first time you've done any volunteering. So yeah. Fun stuff. Let's go." It was refreshing to not being expected to give a big speech, but habits die hard. As she shut her mouth and turned, Regina felt a velvet-soft nose sniffing her leg, and froze.

And slowly lowered her head, to meet the gaze of the bouncebeast that stared up at her, lust hazing it's small wibbly eyes. And it shuffled closer. And closer. "AaaaaAAAa GET IT OFF!! GET IT OFF!!!"

Tamiya made with a start as the bouncebeast set upon Comuta -- and then everyone in sight. This was a travesty. A frightful, uncouth show of natural beastliness. Fortunately, her lusus was not far off -- late as he was, Kabukidad was not about to entrust his precious charge with a set of strangers. He pounced upon the creature, attempting to draw it off of her and the others if not to trap it with his dangerous mitts.

There was a hiss. The lusii successfully squished the beast between his soft paws, and a squeal resounded from underneath. Then a crunch. Kabukidad made a peculiar motion, dipping his torso down to the sandy terrain. The hole in his neck gaped above his paws -- it soon appeared as though he was laying down, hunched over his front. After a moment and an idle, bloody bat to a floppy ear, Kabukidad sat back on his hind legs. Threat resolved. No more bouncebeast.

Tamiya rushed to Kabukidad and hugged him around the neck - careful to avoid a peculiar stain fading from his neck hole.

"Hff.." Regina adjusted her poncho, and straightened up. Right. No one had seen that, apart from some kids who didn't really count. She looked across at the purplebloods lusus and squinted. Gl'bgolyb was creepy on a large, wet, flubbly scale. This thing was just ... odd. Sniffing, she looked around. "Right. Let's get moving." There was a moment of double take, then her arm swung up in disbelief. "Ah! Look! It's right there! Running around with my - with the weather doohicky! C'mon, get your rears in gear!!"

"Right!" Tamiya came right to attention as her lusus shifted behind her. Kabukidad slinked from his spot on the ground, pawing the ground for some reason. There was a throaty hiss from his general area. Tamiya nodded in seeming confirmation. She hoisted her net and waited until the lusus got closer, taking a sharp breath in for preparation.

"Hyaa!" She tossed her net, aiming for the horns of the beast.

Regina was already running towards the beast, weapon drawn. It was a miracle that she wasn't accidentally pinned to it, as the first net was thrown. Ducking, she stumbled and felt a small flash of relief at her short statue, for once in her life. What did you know, miracles existed. Praise the Dark Carnival and all that junk. Doing a slightly awkward roll, she popped up like a jack in the box, swinging at the lusus.

"Woah! Ahahah!!" Regina dodged the bucking horns and managed to swing once more as the beast kicked off the net and lumbered back upright. Taking a few hurried steps away from its bucking hind legs, she glanced over her shoulder at the rest of the party. "Well rusties? What are you waiting for!!"

[ Before Sinter could even say anything regarding the, ah, overly-friendly hopbeast, the purpleblooded girl's lusus took care of it. Really took care of it. In a way Sinter couldn't exactly describe?

Regardless, Sinter was feeling, if possible, less enthusiastic about everything.

"It's not like it was dangerous..." Sinter grumbled quietly into the collar of his desert jacket, under the jingling of the bells that served as its buttons.

What was dangerous, however, was the charging lusus coming up over the dunes. Sinter gawked and scrambled for his net at the call of their leader. Following the lead of the purpleblood... Tamiya, right? Sinter waited down the apparent path of the lusus, net in hand.

"Stop right there!" Sinter called as he tossed his net. That sounded kind of cool, right?

"Yeah, sure, show that lusus who's boss!" Regina hurried over to where the beast fell for a second time, and gave it a sharp slice across the rump, narrowly avoiding the massive, thrashing tail. She dodged back, dragging the blade over the sand to wipe the blood, and grinned over at the blushing? redblood, giving a thumbs up gesture.

Tamiya collected her net, and picked up the redblood's as well. She handed it off to him, looking him up and down with relative suspicion. He was a redblood after all -- with an unfortunate complexion to boot. She cocked her head and couldn't help but stare. Marked with a redness. What a pity. "Here is your net, Sinter." she said simply. "You look disturbed. What possesses you?"

Tamiya looked from him to her lusus, and back. Perhaps it was not best to confide in this redblood, but he didn't seem at ease. "Don't worry. Kabukidad cleanses whatever he goddamn touches. There's no ill will between that bouncebeast and us now." She touched him with two fingers lightly on the right sounder, and nodded her head.

When she brought it back up, it was because she felt the light tap of a raindrop on the top of her head. This was not a good sign. Tamiya frowned and ducked into her clothes, fearing for her make-up. "Bad omen! Bad omen bad omen!" She wailed. Tamiya fled to underneath her lusus, who stared up at the sky with his head nearly touching his back.
