FIRST NIGHT

Everyone in your group is well rested.

The feeling of another oncoming WACKY weather system prickles your skin. With a feeling of dread, you brace yourself for the effects of… A soothing, balmy breeze. Aaah…
This weather effect will remain in play until the next dice are rolled.

Something glinting over a bluff catches your eye. A burrow in the side of the dune yields a bounty of shining golden beetles! And as they say, lucky beetles mean good fortune (and megabux$$$).
Each member of the group has acquired 1 lucky beetle that can be redeemed at the end of the meta for a variety of rewards. You cannot carry any more than 5 lucky beetles total; if you run into this encounter more than 5 times, you cannot collect any more.

A thick translucent blanket of dust appears ominously on the horizon. It looms closer and closer until finally a distinctive wind whips around its waves of sand and dust, creating a suffocating climate for everyone inside of the storm.
This weather effect will remain in play until a 1, 3, or 5 are rolled on a D6.

2,2

An overenthusiastic bouncebeast hops into view. You don’t pay it any mind at first, but when it starts to get closer—and closer—you realize that spring is in the air. The lovestruck beast assaults your group!
The bouncebeast has 1 HP, but has a +1 to avoid being hit (you will need to roll a 4 or above to hit). Every post in which the lovestruck bouncebeast has not been defeated incurs 1 point of damage to the group (as it wounds the group’s dignity in trying to hump their legs).

The pitter-patter of drizzly rain dot the sand with dark freckles. It’s pleasant at first, but soon the rain picks up pace. A roar of rolling thunder heralds a torrential rainstorm! Soon thick, heavy raindrops coat every surface in sight.
This weather effect will remain in play until a 1, 3, or 5 are rolled on a D6.

Upon encountering a heap of weather-ravaged rubble, you spot a familiar hoppity stump laying on the ground. Whether it’s a sign of the dangerous WACKY weather is irrelevant – any troll knows that bouncebeast hooves bring good luck!
Your group has acquired a lucky bouncebeast hoof! The hoof can be used to reroll one dice roll during the meta. When the use of the hoof has been announced, the most recent roll is thrown out and can be re-rolled. The lucky bouncebeast hoof is then discarded from the inventory.

Little pebbles of ice fall in sheets from the sky, and soon the little pebbles feel like veritable chunks of gravel, knives, and a bad case of hypothermia. The ice storm doesn’t seem like it’s going to let up—at least, it looks that way through the blinding shards of frozen awfulness that completely obscure your vision.
This weather effect will remain in play until a 1 or a 6 are rolled on a D6.

Passing through the desert, the only thing that is particularly interesting is the grim landmark of a set of lusus bones half-buried in the desert sand. This is not the lusus you’re looking for! Carry on.
Look, there’s a little troll skeleton beside them... Aww!

Ah kids. She remembered being a kid so fondly. Wait no she didn't. Being a kid sucked because you were small and could be stepped on not to mention that you got treated klike dirt because well... you really were along the lines of dirt, being a kid and all. Yet now who was growing up, who was taking charge for the glory of Alternia?
She was.

Deal with it Seadad, you couldn't stop her anymore, her life her choices and this choice was to go out and fight lusus for the glory of Alternia- or at least the possible payoff of sweet loot.
"Alright." She said, hands on her hips. In hand, a long stick she'd brought for the sake of if maybe they needed a flag. Because one never knew when a flag of any sort would be a good idea.

"Let's head out. For glory and honor and maybe some sweet swag."
Beetles baby, she knew they would come if she just looked hard enough. After all, treasure could be found anywhere.

And soon enough, maybe it was just Atiqua being lucky, or the face she had actively sniffed the air in her side quest for bettles but-
"Aw yeah, not even a few in and we're already finding some loot now see this is what I'm taking about. Two feather beasts, one rock."

These nets were awful, thought Dictys as ey waited at the group's assigned meeting post. The handle of eirs was sanded, well, poplar, polished but cheap compared to the powerful, sleek feel of eir favorite sorts of devices. Ey supposed it didn't really need special capacities, though - just brute force. er, brute rope? Although ey preferred to leave that work to plebeians, there wasn't really much else Dictys could do to contribute. Privately ey rather agreed with the theory being pushed about by badly-hidden rebel fliers (the one that posited that WACKY was a completely government-sanctioned project), but ey supposed that was why the queen's government hadn't bothered to hide it: no one minded lovely weather or convenient snowfall! And besides, they were trolls. If they had the ability to manipulate the world around them, then they damned well deserved it. It'd be most prudent to have the device back in military hands as soon as possible.

Ey was always punctual, and had been first to arrive - the two yellowblood twins had followed suit quickly (Dictys' mouth had worked over a little in surprise when ey'd first seen their names on the assignment list: two trolls who shared half a name was quite rare!), with their strange hybrid lusus hurrying the skirted one along - she . Ey was emself carting Mommydaddy about in an efficient little wagon (although little to Dictys' knowledge it'd have to be quickly abandoned on the sandy terrain; wheels did not much like sand). When the tealblood finally arrived, ey opened eir mouth to quickly take command - ey deserved it, after all - but the tealblood started walking off before Dictys could try.

How dare they?

Dictys fumed as ey stumbled after, and ey took quick strides in order to keep up - it didn't really work well, and the tealblood's voice grated on eir delicate, refined, highblooded ears. Dictys was the rightful leader of this little expedition - it showed, in both eir noble color and eir (rather elegant, if you asked em!) fins. And, well, really? Swag? There was so much judgment coming Atiqua's way. And disapproval. Mostly disapproval - the expedition existed to restore Alternia to her natural glorious state, not for some lowblood's lusty dreams of wealth!

Dictys swept the remainder of the beetles Atiqua had lighted upon into eir own hands, and then promptly thrust most of them upon the twin pair, who had...well, they'd followed along. Ey didn't particularly know or care who they were, but surely they felt more loyalty to the glorious empire than this...this beetle-digging ingrate of an usurper! "We're here to hunt a lusus and subdue an insubordinate weather device, not dig for loot!" ey hissed, quite affronted on The Queen And Empire's behalf. "Wouldn't you agree?" ey threw in, with a glance back at the other two lowbloods. Surely they had to be here for a reason other than their own personal gain. Dictys appreciated ambition, certainly, but not of this sort, and not over loyalty to the empire.

Though not normally a talkative troll, certainly not the talkative half, Curtsi was just about rendered mute completely, so starstruck was he by the others making up his team—his crew, he imagined privately to himself, only too shy to say so aloud and confirm what a child he was. Instead, he hung back clinging to his lusus' leg, not even putting up a token quarrel with Trusci as he watched on and allowed himself to be herded by the ever-cheery Tess, who reminded him to say thank you when given the beetles. She seemed only a little concerned when her little boy just blinked adoringly at the seadweller. A real actual live seadweller, Curtsi could hardly believe that what was a near-mythical creature to him was in the flesh now, and he couldn't help but wonder if maybe ey wouldn't mind having eir picture taken...?

Ah, no, no, now wasn't really this time, as the yellowblood was pulled out of his thoughts by the direct question asked, and instinctively his gaze darted over to his twin for a moment, before he answered quickly, correctly, "Those... are the objectives, yes." Still, Curtsi couldn't help but duck his head, feeling rather embarrassed for speaking up against the tealblood who was still higher in caste and, well, older, a-and, she looked so captainly.

Though normally a talkative troll, certainly the talkative half anyway, Trusci was almost rendered as mute as her twin. While Curtsi hung back, Trusci was much more bold, toy wooden sword in one hand and notepad in the other, regardless of the fact that this left no open hands for a writing utensil (which left the lonely pad of paper relatively useless). She had been up for the expedition initially, two parts overbearingly excited and one part thirsty for knowledge; the whole WACKY thing smelled suspicious, but then everything 'smelled' suspicious to one Trusci Modsat.

All that eagerness was crushed when she arrived with her group. Nothing spelled awful quite like being paired with highbloods, and a seadweller at that. The yellowblooded twin found it difficult to hold her tongue; Tess surely wouldn't be pleased with her if she spoke out, but dammit if either one of them did something stupid then she was sure there would be no holding back.

In the meantime, however, Trusci was sated. The tealblood was going on about treasures while the seadweller (pathetically so, in her mind) tried to (failing all the while) usurp her position of power. Dumb kid, there wasn't anything you could pitted against someone older, blood colors or not. To top the whole ordeal off, she was sure Curtsi was back there oogling over the two, and between that and the arguing it was almost enough to set her off. Even the shiny golden beetles the group found did little to quell her ever building anger.

Calm down Trusci, the star reporter wouldn't let herself go like this! With a deep sigh and a lot less tension, the twin directed her angry energy towards something productive. Scanning the horizon, she squinted as she saw movement in the desert sands, eyes widening as she realized that the movement was in fact a large beast rampaging under the Alternian moons.

"Target spotted!" Trusci blurted out, almost dropping her things in the process as she rushed back to her lusus, struggling to swap the items in her hands with one of the large nets they brought along for the journey.

"Curtsi, stop gawking and help me with the net! You too fishkid!" she said, all anger resolved and replaced with an enthusiastic glee. This was their chance!

Agreement! Dictys liked this troll. Ey beamed a shark-toothed smile at him, distracted momentarily from eir anger at the willowy tealblood ey'd been saddled with - and then the other one spoke, almost (and rather conveniently, Dictys thought) highlighting Dictys' point. Ey grasped eir net and dashed toward the lusus, eager as well to prove emself. "I'll come around on its other side," ey declared, rather dashingly, ey thought.

Without waiting for any sort of affirmation from eir fellows, Dictys ran to meet the beast, little feet skidding gleefully over the grass (it had better not stain!). The net ey'd been handling began to billow out behind em as ey ran, and it was a miracle the lusus didn't see it and immediately turn away (admittedly, it seemed to be in an...altered state of mind). Dictys crouched and tossed the net almost in synchronization with eir running - and then it all came crashing down. Dictys' body, that is. Ey wasn't the most talented of runners at the best of times, and it took em a bit of coordination always to get eir limbs moving abovewater. The coarse, sparse grass, too, seemed to have the opposite of a grounding effect: ey simply wasn't accustomed to running over anything that wasn't sand, sifting through eir toes...

Needless to say, ey went tumbling. Fortunately ey was a ways away from the lusus, now, and it seemed as though Dictys would be safe from its grasp - the net seemed to have successfully tangled it, large as it was. Besides, it'd soon have more to worry about, if that tealblood had even brought a weapon. She'd better have brought a weapon. They were here to subdue a beast, after all!

She was the adult. At least, the oldest. To Atiqua that ment she had to be the leader. Because that's just how things worked. Sometimes. Usually. Maybe. It depended. She didn't seem to mind the purple blood's outburst, only slightly slumping at their words.

"Look I'm all for subdueing the beast, but if we come back short handed then what?" She shook her head, curls bouncing and hat tipping a bit on her head. "You have to look long term. If we go out under her majesty's banner then come back with nothing to show of our efforts? Forgive me noble, but I'd rather have some fallback. Plus- I brought a stick in case we needed to put a flag anywhere okay? It's no secret that some renegades might be lurking about and reminding them that this is her majesty's domain never hurt- except when it does." She smiled, trying to appease the noble caste while keeping to her own standards.

She smiled and smiled and hoped that if anything happened, it would happen to the kids and not her because hey, snacks put up less a fight than meals right?

Of course, then it happened. One wild lusii running by. "OH DANG-" She dropped her stick/future flag pole and brought out her Blaster Edge, running after the beast, slashing at it.
"Let's keep it up, the more nets the better to wrangle this brute!"

The Lusus had come and gone, but Atiqua had vowed not to give up, not to surrender. Running after it until it was out of sight, she was quickly left to stop and wait because oh god what if that purple blood kid died on her watch oh gob.

Sitting down, she waited, and while doing so, found herself assulted by cute things. Namely, gerbils.
She'd keep one. Rations in case of an emergency.

Dictys picked emself (and the net) up eventually, continuing to toddle along with a glare - as though ey was daring anyone else to comment on the stumble. Abovewater navigation was hard, okay?

Ey let the tealblood - what had their name been? - lead them to a windfall of gerbils with some disbelief. "Some trolls, really," ey sniffed, although the comment, this time, wasn't directed at Atiqua. Ey promptly turned away from the lusus-types, not noticing that one had insinuated its way into Mommydaddy's wagon, which was becoming quickly more difficult to pull along. Luckily, the rest had given em time to pick some of the muck out of its precious wheels. And to think ey'd started the journey with a gleaming wagon! But, surely, Mommydaddy would understand the temporary inconvenience. Terrorists, however petty, were important to subdue, and performing the work of the Empire was Dictys' pride and joy.

On the horizon ey spotted the rampaging sort of lusus again, and ey gave a great shout. "To the left!" was the triumphant exclamation, and this time ey set off toward it with a much more sedate pace. Clutching the net in eir hands, ey tossed lightly and grinned with satisfaction when the net landed, tangling only the lusus this time. If Dictys was good at anything, it was learning from eir public blunders. Even if ey didn't seem to acknowledge them.

The sudden appearance of the lusus had startled Curtsi right out of his, yes, gawking, but it did not spur him into action, as would have been far more inspiring and respectable. Although he had known they would run into the beast, because that was the whole point of this expedition, the the sight of its reckless charging and the savagery of his fellow trolls, his twin even, had him cowering under his own, far more gentle lusus. Well, Tess would have liked to engage, but her little boy was clinging so hard onto her gangly leg that she could only shout after Trusci to be careful out there! and Curtsi himself was quick to cry, "I-I'm not gawking!"

It was not Curtsi's finest moment, especially because he had left the camera slung around his neck completely untouched as he threw his hands over his eyes instead (see, he really had been telling the truth) but, well, he only had to hope the others had been too caught up in the tussle to have noticed his lack of participation or even a conciliatory photograph of their bravery. Once it was over, his lusus soothed him out from under her awkward bulk, indicating to him the new little many-legged friend that surely would not judge him as harshly as everyone else must have been!

It was a bit of a consolation, though he was a bit miffed to think Trusci would get to keep one, too, when she was just going to be very irresponsible about it, he knew. In fact, Curtsi was just about to open his mouth and tell her so to make himself feel better when the lusus struck again, and this time Tess would not allow him to hide. Grabbing his net off her two-humped back and thrusting it to her boy, she quacked some muddled word of encouragement as he gasped and shakily took it from her bill. Right. This was his chance at redemption and, pointedly mimicking the seadweller and not his twin's technique, he scuttled after the lusus and tossed his net.
