It was still afternoon when Mori arrived to the host club, not long before the masquerade ball was to continue in the ballroom that evening. After unlocking the doors with his key, he stepped into the quiet room and locked the door behind him again; this was where the hosts had to put their costumes on, so no guests were being entertained there before the ball.
Carrying a small container wrapped in an indigo cloth, the tall host ignored the dressing area for now and headed straight for the kitchen instead. He wasn't sure if he'd get to see a certain radiant hostess before the masquerade resumed, but he wanted to bring something he'd promised to give to her a while ago: sweet red bean soup. It wasn't anything special and was very easy to find in Japan, but Mori said he'd get it for her... so he did.
He placed the container into the fridge for now, then leaned back against the counter and pulled his phone from his pocket to write a text.I brought that soup for you. It's in the fridge. As he hit 'send', he felt oddly stupid about texting about soup. To Shiny. Even if it was good soup.

Wild Morinozuka I brought that soup for you. It's in the fridge. Her phone started ringing at her just as she was outside the music room doors, trying to find her key somewhere underneath the giant garment bag and other bags carrying the pieces of her costume. Loud and clear even through the doors was that signature ringtone "When You Wish Upon A Star", along with the sounds of somebody's muffled voice as she cursed at the blasted thing, and at her key, and at the doors for being locked in the first place, all in French and in one breath.

Leaving the kitchen, Mori headed towards the dressing rooms but paused in his steps when he heard light, whimsical music from the club doors and... cursing? It was hard to make out, but cursing generally had a certain tone...
He quickly headed towards the double doors and unlocked them. "Hey," he greeted the encumbered Shiny while reaching out to help her with her bags. "Sorry," he said about the locked door, "I was going to get changed..." But then he had soup to put away, then text about. Oh, that ringtone must have been her getting the message. Okay.

"Oh! Hello, Mori, thank you for getting the door- and for holding those, merci! Just one moment, I think I had a call just now..." She gratefully foisted her costume goods onto him and began digging around in her bag for her phone. First she found her keys (hah!) and then finally... "Ah, here we go... oh, it's from you!" Shiny quickly read the message and... blushed. Was she really blushing over soup? Yep, yep she really was. "I had nearly forgotten about the soup... you really didn't have to, you know, I mean I didn't expect you to bother about something so simple and it isn't as thou- um. Thank you." Somehow, upon realizing that she was starting to babble, she managed to actually blush even more.

Mori just watched her for a moment as he held Shiny's costume things in his arms and resisted the urge to try to hide behind them. "..." Yep, it's from me. Despite the embarrassment he was feeling for some dumb reason he didn't understand (so what if she read his message right in front of him?), he answered flatly after she finished talking, "It's no big deal." Because it wasn't, it was just soup. He'd bring soup for any of his friends if they asked him to, but no one ever asked him before. So, yeah.
"Sorry I didn't bring it sooner," he said, turning away to carry her bags inside. She surely had to have tried sweet red bean soup elsewhere by now, right? He'd heard that commoners even had a canned drink variety... not that he thought she was like a commoner -- not that there was anything wrong with being a commoner!
"..." He headed towards the dressing area to put the bags there.

"Oh no, you don't need to apologize!" She was quick to reassure him - or was she reassuring herself? Wait, why did she need reassuring? And why did he need it,either? Shaking off the perplexing cycle of thoughts she offered him a small smile as she walked with him to the back area to put away her things. "I mean, it's just soup, right? I could have tried it any time, really... though I haven't. Tried it yet, that is. Not because I was waiting for you! I just, ah... it just slipped my mind." Lamely, she fidgeted with the sleeve of her coat, wondering again why she felt the need to reassure one or both of them over the fact that the soup was a good thing and there weren't any... awkward issues with it. "I, ah... I've been trying a lot of vietnamese and mediterranean style dishes, lately."

Placing Shiny's costume things on the counter near the separate dressing rooms, Mori nodded a couple of times while she spoke. "Right, no big deal. ... no, of course there's no reason to wait for me or soup." He stepped back out from the dressing area, maintaining that look of deadpan despite feeling a little foolish. At least Shiny seemed to be feeling the same way as well? Ah, that didn't really make anything better...
Before the tall host could ask why she hadn't tasted such a popular dish in Japan, she answered him without realizing it. "Ah," he replied with another little nod. "Discover any new favorites?" he asked, wanting to stop thinking about soup. He then looked towards the kitchen.
"Do you want to try it now?" Not that he was rushing her because he wanted to know if she liked the food he brought for her. That'd be weird, right? It's not like he made it-- oh wait, yes he did (with plenty of help from the family chef, but he had prepared it). He'd been in the mood for it at the time though, that was all... "Later's fine too."

"Stuffed grape leaves, and kofta. Oh and panzanella salad, since I always bake too much bread and its a great way to use it up." Food was an easy subject to fall back on, and left her feeling much more in control of herself and her strange verbal outbursts. "Have you tried very much Greek or Mediterranean foods? I think you'd like them, a lot of very interesting flavors like feta and tzatziki." After all if he liked natto, he was bound to like sour yogurt sauces and bitter grape leaves. "I could bring some in, if you'd like? In exchange for the soup, of course." Not because she wanted to bring him something special like he was bringing her something special. Because he wasn't bringing her something special, it was just red bean soup that he probably got from a can anyways and everybody knew how much she liked cooking so it wasn't that big of a deal if she brought him something she'd made herself. Right... right. Yes. Oh! He'd asked her a question! What did he ask? "What did you ask? Oh, right, the soup! Um, yes, I think I would like it now, actually." Smiling again, and hopefully not looking as flustered as she felt. "I won't be able to eat much once my mask is on, after all, so something ahead of time makes sense, right?"

"Sounds interesting," he said about the foods Shiny mentioned, then shook his head. "I haven't tried those, no." He normally stuck to east Asian cuisine and never really found himself with opportunities to try other things (or maybe he just didn't notice them).
When she offered to bring in something for him, Mori felt surprised for a moment. He wasn't sure why, though. Was it even surprise he was feeling? Maybe this was how Tamaki and the Hitachiin twins felt when they thought about eating Haruhi's cooking... gah, it didn't matter!
"Sure, if you want to," the tall host said in a casually deadpan way, because he certainly wouldn't look forward to it or anything.
He nodded and looked away as he headed towards the kitchen, pushing the door open and holding it for the radiant hostess. "Yeah," he agreed about having it now making more sense, letting go of the door once she was inside. Mori opened the refrigerator to bring out the container he'd brought from home, then went about preparing the sweet red bean soup (which was just pouring some into a bowl, because rich people don't eat out of transport containers).
Without heating it, he gently placed the bowl down on the island countertop. "It's a cold dessert," he explained briefly.
