After months and months and months of living like refugees (those poor Hunter houses ;A; ), it felt good to have a little sense of civilization. It was rather amazing, what a person can get used to, but it didn't mean said person had to like it. Thank goodness the Training Fields were still available for use, Before was up for a little workout and Vanna had been nagging at him to wield her a bit.

Silly Before, you ought to have invited the ghoul. You know it's much more embarrassing to watch you fail to hit a training dummy than it is a moving opponent.

The Mist Hunter knew she was teasing but at the same time also know how very true that was. Even when his weapon was larger than he was, he still mishandled her and either ended up overshooting or undercutting.

But the Mist Hunter's time on Deus had taught him to stop caring what other people thought of him. Unless it was Caelius, or H, or Ar-that traitor, and the other Division heads and their assistants. Basically anyone who could, theoretically, outright order his death and have it be legal and allowed on grounds of being the boss.

Shaking off the grim thought, Before strode further down the Training Fields then promptly summoned his weapon.

"I know I sometimes can't hit the broad side of a barn, but that's what practice is for!" Before declared aloud, beaming.

Oliver was not sure what he was doing. He had some spare time between assignments and chores, and while sitting alone in his room he thought it would be a brilliant idea to go practice. Maybe coax Jökul into talking to him a bit more. He rarely heard the weapon's rumbling voice, although he knew the creature was right there. So he had headed out to the practice field.

The unpredictability of the outside world slowly sapped the teen's confidence as he made his way to the training field, taking the long way around where he knew the landmarks, trying to fight the worry that gnawed away at his stomach every time he thought about getting lost. It was on his own time, so what if he got lost? But the worry was still there.

When he finally arrived at the training field, the ideas that had seemed so good back in his small, white room now seemed more like a nightmare. Practice? Out here, with all these other hunters? It was impossible. Oliver was too intimidated by their presence, any one of them could probably kill him in a heartbeat. He backed off, suddenly hoping nobody would notice him before he could beat a hasty retreat.

He'd taken to stretch out first before getting into any serious movements. Wouldn't want to pull a muscle over something so routine as spar practice. He was far more limber now than he was when she first woke, and as he bent forward, head now between his legs, the Mist spotted an unfamiliar face.

He recognized those deer-in-headlights look. He'd exhibited those symptoms too often not to, and decided to be a welcoming presence. Straightening up, with his weapon still in her bottlecap brooch form, he jogged on over with a warm smile, "Heya! Here for a little training?"

It would take something much softer than a smile to make Oliver feel welcome on the island. Had someone left a fluffy pillow in his room, or lured him into a quiet corner with a warm blanket, he might have accepted that as a friendly gesture.

However, upon seeing someone happily jogging over to him on the training field, the kid was convinced he was about to die. He had no idea how to use a weapon, and this stranger would surely pummel him into the ground. Maybe he could run, but he wasn't in the best shape, and surely he would be caught before he could make a good escape. Then what would he do?

Glancing backwards confirmed there would be nowhere to hide if he did bolt. He had to... somehow... interact on the training field... The closest Oliver could manage at that very moment was looking like a scared rabbit.

Before never considered himself an intimidating person, he wasn't buffed up the way a number of the other Hunters were. He wasn't particularly tall or covered in scars or sporting badass tattoos either. He pretty much saw himself as the Hunter equivalent of milk toast, with maybe some goofball sprinkles tossed in.

So it was quite confusing for the Mist Hunter to have the new face's reaction be that of a scared rabbit. Ah jeez, was it the coat? He didn't think the rank would scare anyone, the smile on his face faltered to awkward second thoughts for a moment but then the warm smile was back. With a manic avengance.

Holding out a hand, Before introduced himself, banking on the sheer weirdness of his name to break the ice and come across as harmless. Which he was. Really! "I'm Before that which precedes things, as in the opposite of after, y'know?"

Oliver shook his head, he wasn't entirely sure he did know. Confusion was slowly seeping into his frightened expression, he didn't even recognize the introduction as an introduction at all due to it's unusual presentation.

The kid looked down at the offered hand nervously, but extended his own regardless. This he understood. It was either a handshake, or he would be dragged to his death the minute he stepped into the trap. Either way he had no choice. His own hand trembled, and his shake was weak, but... it was a start.

Oh jeez, maybe the kid didn't understand English, teal eyes blinked as Before considered this very real possibility. After the limp handshake he got, he gestured to himself and speaking very slowly, "Me. Be. Fore." and with measured slowness pointed to the kid, "You. Speak. Eng. Glish?"

In the back of the Hunter's head, a face wrought from metal rolled her eyes dismissively, Oh for Jack's sake, you're wasting your attention on it, silly Before. The weapon had been looking forward to getting a decent work out and this delay was getting to her.

A doubtful look crossed Oliver's face. "Y-yes," he stammered in reply. "D-do you?" Maybe that was why the guy suddenly launched into that weird little sentence, he thought he was saying something else?

"I-I know a bit of French... Ah... Parlez vous Français?" The kid looked a little edgy, his strikingly pale eyes glancing left and right, anywhere but at the other hunter's face. "Um... I-I'm s-sorry, I d-don't know more than that..."

"Well, yeah," Before scratched at his face in confusion, he was pretty sure he'd been speaking in English this whole time. "I mean, unless the world decided to rename the language to something else since I woke up here, I'm totes sure I can speak Englih. And uuuuuh, nopes, sorry. No ispeakey the Frenchie," he added with a waggling finger.

"So. You here for some practice with your weapon?" he repeated the question, rephrasing it just a bit for the kid's sake.

Oliver's doubtful expression grew into a hopeless mix of fear and uncertainty. Communication issues aside, the kid tried to just move on now that they were at least making some sense to each other.

"N-no, I d-don't think so!" The life trainee stammered, backing up and looking even more nervous than before. He had originally thought so, but he didn't want to get killed!

Before tilted his head, wondering if he had ever been so skittish around others. He did recall acting like a jumpy rabbit, but that was because the other individual had already nearly-killed him at the time and Before was completely justified in his nervousness.

"Oh? You here for something else?" well if it wasn't A, then it was B, right? And there were a lot of letters in the alphabet that Before was sure he could eventually get the right one that corresponded to what the kid wanted. Speaking of the kid, "IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'm a total doofus, I totes forgot to ask what's your name?"

Again, Vanna rolled her eyes while trying to urge Before to just leave the hunter to its own devices. They were wasting good training time.

"N-no! I-I was just passing through!" Oliver stammered, shaking his head vigorously. The speed and high pitch at which he assured the older hunter was hardly convincing. But he was still very afraid of being killed, and the training field was looking more and more like a good place for it to happen. It felt like his experiences before waking up in the pod were still too fresh in his mind.

But the kid was unable to run away now that he had been noticed.

"O-Oliver," he said in a quiet, timid voice. "Oliver K-Keeley."

Before gave the kid a good, long look. Whether Before really believed that Oliver was just passing through or not, the Mist Hunter didn't think it was necessary. He simply gave the new trainee an encouraging smile then promptly turned on his heel.

"Well, okiedokie Liver," Before chirped, summoning his large wheel as he strode away. "Hope you don't get lost to wherever you were heading. But iffin' you don't wanna be Chopped Liver," he grinned, glancing over his shoulder. Cocking his head towards the rows of training dummies, Before added, "I'd figure out how to use my partner ASAP. If not, pray you got great dumb luck or you find peeps who'll die for your sake. Literally."

Although Oliver had begun to wonder if "Liver" was his new nickname or just the way the man said it, he was struck dumb by the sight of the huge, spiked wheel being summoned. Out of thin air.

He reached up and grasped the long tooth that hung around his neck. Jökul was like that too, able to appear in that form just by merely willing it to be so, but it was amazing (and more than a little terrifying) to see another hunter doing it. And it seemed so nonchalant. Like it was a routine thing, something that was completely normal.

Perhaps it was just Oliver's brand-new-trainee mindset showing, but he could only stare. He didn't even take the opportunity to run away.

That look on Oliver's face, it was a familiar look, it was near and dear to Before's heart, mostly because he used to make it a lot. Emphasis on used to. And it was not a look Before was saw directed at him. And, truth be told, it made him vastly uncomfortable. His eyes darted left and right, trying to find some other plausible reason Oliver was aiming such awe at him, or at least in his general direction.

In the back of his mind, a face wrought from metal preened, You always crowed how amazing I am, surely it was not all said to humor me, was it, Silly Before?

Oh. Oh! Yeah, that made so much more sense to Before. Maybe it was because the massive wheel was his partner, but he had to admit his bonded was a sight to behold. And again, maybe it was because the Mist Hunter could better understand the admiration when it was for the large wheel that he pointed with one hand, "You see that dummy over there?"

Without waiting for Oliver's acknowledgment, Before angled the wheel vertically, almost as if he were holding a long bow, and gave one of the runes a light tap. Three of the spikes shot out, trailing thin metal cords behind them to imbed into one of the training dummies. Another light tap of the same rune and the spikes were retracted back with blinding speed and a solid thunk.

"Well? Whatcha think of Vanna?" he asked, all proud smiles of a doting father.
