Jijikko snorted.
The hot air of Eowyn’s seemingly endless desert clawed at his nostrils, sandy, grating, and dry — caked with a gravelly combination of the disturbed earth and his own sweat. Sand got everywhere. Up his nose, into his eyes, stuck beneath his scales, caught in all the pinches of his joints: elbows, claws, neck tail, horns. Name it, and it found a way to get there.
Generally, he was used to that. He had grown up with it, after all. The desert was as much a part of him as his wings, his teeth, his claws. It was his home, and had been since he had first cracked free of his mother’s egg and had his scales glisten in the dawning sun. But on this particular day — by no special fault of the desert itself — everything seemed to be against him. At least, in the sphere of his own imaginings. He was finally out on his own. Jijikko versus the world. A proud, lone soldier, free of his nest. A future hero!
Or, so he had once imagined.
He still clung to the idea to some extent — perhaps even to a great extent. It was simply days like today which set him back several notches. Meager setbacks, maybe, but enough to make him feel far more bitter about the goings on of his life and his fate for the future than his character generally dictated. He had always imagined himself a conqueror, but knowing that even as a, technically, full grown khehora, he could still barely scrape through a fight with a tiny green ysali — and that he would likely come out for the worse, at that — was embarrassing. And frustrating.
Jijikko ruffled his wings, snorting again as he shook them free of the lingering grit. He needed a test. A real test. A challenge! Something that got his blood pumping. Ysali didn’t even look intimidating. How was he supposed to work up a battle fury for something that sneezed with more ferocity than it roared? It was practically a grass bug.
No, he needed something bigger. Fiercer. Something that really pushed him to his limits.
His father would have critiqued him on that point, of course. Would have told him he needed to apply some patience, think things through, remember his roots, start slow. But Jijikko didn’t have time for slow. He had seen the Magescian cities — the troves where two-leggers hustled and bustled and traded their strange wares, exchanging chatter and coin, making music, wiggling their fingers — and he wanted that. He wanted all of that, but to get there — to successfully perform the ritual and acquire a two-legged body of his own — he needed to fight his way up the ranks.
His clan was gaili, by the gods, and he couldn’t even dream of fighting such a massive thing for the orbs he needed at this stage. But he would get there. Swishing his tail with stubborn resolve, Jijikko eyed the long spanse of golden desert before him. Yes, he would get there.
And the world would be waiting for him when he did.

Kilian glanced out over the familiar desert scene before him. A place he had spent a lot of his years at. Roaming through and fighting dragons and other creatures. He had once had a partner. Someone who had been there with him through most of his adventures in this place. The reason he had originally stayed here.
He sighed at the memories. Most of them good, some not so good. Where had things went wrong? He tried not to think on it much. It had happened and here he was, back on Eowyn. A shadow passed over him from above and he was brought out of his thoughts. Gaze jerking upwards, he spotted Amadia gliding around through the hot desert air.
Then he remembered why they were out in the desert and not back in town. They were running low on supplies and money. He needed to hunt, gather some meat and furs that he could sell and maybe keep for him and Casseth. So while Casseth was out with Lithian, he had decided to venture into the desert and see what he could find.
It had been a while since his blades had been used. They had had enough money to last them for a while and so had had no need to go hunting until just recently. As Kilian moved further into the desert Amadia swooped down, easily landing in the sand next to Kilian. Surprised, Kilian jerked to a stop and glanced at his old friend. “Something wrong?”
Amadia snorted, her snout close to the sand. She snorted out, sending sand shooting out away from her nose. “I smell something. It’s faintly familiar. I...just can’t place where I’ve smelled it before.”
Kilian’s head tilted as he watched his companion move around in front of him. “If only my nose worked as yours did. Just be on guard,” he said as he glanced back out over the dry desert.
Amadia took off ahead of Kilian, snout still close to the ground, trying her best to follow the smell that had caught her nose high up in the sky. She knew that scent. She just wished she could place where she’d smelled it before and when. It seemed like a distant memory. One that she couldn’t quite grasp. She flew further away from Kilian, wanting to get ahead just in case there was danger. At least then she could report back through their bond and he would be able to prepare for an attack.
What she spotted, however, had been the last thing she’d expected. A familiar white, black and yellow patterned khehora moved around under her. She had met this one before, she knew she had. The scent she had smelled was coming from him. She flew down, just behind the younger khehora and snorted. “Have we met before?”

Jijikko yipped, spinning around like a top jerked into action without proper prep and stumbling clumsily as a result, nearly tripping over his own tail. “Beware stranger! I’m dangerous and—a…n…” Jiji’s stance relaxed as he noted it was just another khehora, and a bonded one, at that from the feel of its magic was any indication. As such, curiosity quickly replaced wariness and he leaned closer, sniffing. “Met before…?” he repeated, tilting his head as he gave her a once over.
She did smell vaguely familiar. Jiji ought to know, as he considered himself especially keen when it came to his sense of smell, but the memory was so distant he came up with nothing but a blur and a vague shadow of a happy experience. Even still, he shook his head.
“I don’t recognize you, but you do smell fairly nice for—er…” He shifted his weight slightly, and held his chin a notch higher, grinning lopsidedly. “You smell nice. What are you doing around these parts? Where’s your two-legger? Are you lost? I can help if you're lost. I'm very familiar with these parts.” He puffed his chest out as he said it and perked his head up again, sniffing the winds for any scent of her companion and swishing the tip of his tail when he caught onto what had to be it. An 'oblivionite'. Like Raemos.

Amadia snorted at the enthusiastic khehora. She remembered that eagerness. She had played with this khehora once, before he could even talk, before he had fully come into his own magic. She used her nose to nudge him in the side and gave another snort. "I am not lost. I have lived in this desert for many years and though I've been gone for some time I still remember my way around." Her head rose as she looked back in the direction Kilian would be coming from any time now. "My companion will be here soon. I flew ahead to make sure there was no danger." She looked back to the younger khehora. "My name is Amadia, by the way.
As she finished introducing herself Kilian came into view. He eyed the khehora that was with Amadia, warily approaching the two even though Amadia gave the ok through their bond. "Hello," he said as he came up beside Amadia, letting his hand rest at her neck and patting his friend. "Are you a friend of Ama's?"

“Jijikko,” Jiji responded with a proud nod after Amadia introduced herself. “I’ll be a legend one day,” he added with a grin, and as her companion came in to join them, he gave another quick swish of his tail, sniffing more. Older than Raemos by a good bit — though that was obvious just by his size, tail, and wings — and he smelled much less of ranch animals. A warrior, through and through.
“I might be,” Jiji answered in response to the two-legger’s question, and with a glance towards Ama, he gave a quick wink. “If she already thinks me deserving of such a title. If not, I suppose I’ll have to earn it. What are you two doing out here? Hunting?”
At the prospect of earning some hunting companions, Jiji only barely contained an excess wiggle of excitement, and compromised by flicking his tail again happily. It wasn’t as though he needed the help of course — despite him never having successfully fought anything on his own before, including ysalis, let alone anything of a more challenging variety — but if they were already about to hunt anyway…
“I could help keep you safe if you need some extra talons on your side,” Jiji offered. “I’ve been looking to test my magic all morning.”

Ama gave a shrug of her shoulders as leaned into the pet. "We've met before and played. Beyond that I don't know him. I suppose we could be friends as long as he turned out to be decent," she said, eyeing the kheora before them. AMA wouldn't mind befriending the younger one. After all, she had lost her best khehora friend when they'd left Aisko.
Ama held back a snort as she glanced back up to Kilian. They both knew that they needed no help for what they were going after. Not to mention that the little guy didn't even look like he'd be able handle much himself. However, Kilian only smiled. "The company would be much welcomed. What clan do you belong to?"

Jijikko swelled up with pride, beaming at the response and swishing his tail excitedly. “Gaili,” he answered, prancing around his newfound companions. “What are we hunting? Dragons? Or meat? I bet we could take on lots of dragons. They won’t know what came at them — we’ll be in and then BAM, rawwwrrrrr, eeeeeeeiii—! And then dragon dust.” He wriggled, smug. Then, glancing to Amadia, he grinned, ruffling his wings. “I’ll show you I’ve gotten a lot bigger and more powerful than I was. If anything scares you, let me know and protect you in an instant.”

Kilian chuckled at the enthusiastic response from the khehora. Patting Ama on the neck again he began walking again. "We were just going to hunt for some meat. Maybe furs. My son and I are running low on supplies and I figured I could stock up while he's busy with his friend. We weren't really looking for dragons specifically. Though orbs are always nice."
Ama snorted, head lowering to sniff at Jiji once more. If she hadn't been sure about the scent before, there was no denying this was the same khehora she'd met a while back. His enthusiasm hadn't changed. What had changed, though, was his ability to talk. "I think I can handle myself just fine little one but thank you all the same." She flicked her tail out, patting him on the head as she walked by him, following after Kilian.

“Oh,” Jiji butt in in response to the two-legger. “I can help with that, too. I’m looking for anything to work up my training! Even easy stuff like furry critters, but if we encounter dragons…” His tail swished eagerly. “I’ll be on top of them.”
At Amadia’s response, though, Jiji puffed his chest out, giving the khehora equivalent of a pout with his expression. “Hey…I’m…little one?” He bounded after them both, trotting at her side, practically bursting with uncontained energy. “I’m a lot bigger than I used to be, you know — bigger than you! I’ll be useful. You’ll see.”
Jiji did his best not to look put out as they moved off. Bonded or not, the kiandri was cute — she smelled of storms and the desert — and he didn’t want to come off as inexperienced to her. He’d make his showing; he promised that much to himself. They’d see.

“You may be larger than me but you’re still younger.” Ama huffed as she kept a few paces behind Kilian. “Have you fought many creatures since we last met?” She still remembered the first time she had met Jiji. He hadn’t even been able to speak and she doubt that he had understood her when she talked. He had been full of energy and that didn’t seem to have changed in the time they’d been apart. There was something about the younger khehora that she could shake. Something that made her instantly like him.
The distant roar of a dragon made Kilian stop in his tracks. He glanced back to Amadia, a questioning look on his face. They communicated through their bond, a natural thing for them both after having been together for so many years. Ama nodded as she sniffed at the ground. “Kiandri,” Kilian said as he glanced to Jiji. “They sound far enough off but be on the look out. We can handle them alright but you don’t want to get shocked by one.” He glanced to Ama, raising an eyebrow as she dipped her head down low. “They tend to sting a bit.” He patted her snout and scratched under her chin before starting back off again.

“I’ve, er…” Jiji shuffled his weight uncertainly. “Of course I have. I’ve practiced loads!” It wasn’t precisely true. Well, he had practiced, somewhat, in terms of flying and working with his magic, and he had certainly imagined several fights with dragons and played them out in his head. He had play-fought with his siblings as well, testing his magic on them and his defenses against theirs. Surely that counted for something? “I—”
At the distant roar, Jiji’s head perked up, posture stiffening with keen interest and tail straightening out behind him. Kilian barely had time to explain before Jijikko began bounding forward.
“Dragons — real dragons!” He paused, remembering his statement before. “Not that I…haven’t seen them before, and, er…” He swished his tail, sniffing the air and then raising his snout in what he hoped to be a regal manner. “Only kiandris, tch. They shouldn’t be much trouble. I’ll get us started!” Without waiting for an answer of any sort, Jiji took two more solid bounds across the desert, spreading his wings as he went, and then pumped, soaring proudly up, up into the burning sky.
Kiandris.
His muscles hummed with excitement, his magic rippling through him as he beat his wings, scouring the land below for said dragons. A real dragon fight. And what better way to kick things off than a third tier dragon hunt? They were indeed a good bit off — easily far enough to have avoided, if they’d so chosen — but Jijikko wasn’t about to back down. Not in front of his newfound companions and the amicable bonded female.
She even seemed to like him! Somewhat…
He would show her how battle ready he was. This decided, Jijikko circled, eyeing the dragon nesting grounds with hungry determination, and dove.

“Jiji…” Kilian trailed off as he watched the khehora soar into the air. He pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head. “Fool.” He glanced to Ama, nodding toward the sky and asking her to follow after the younger one. Though he had just met him, he didn’t want him to get himself hurt. He took off running, the trek through the desert was a much slower process than flying through the air and he hoped that Ama would catch up with Jiji before he decided to do something stupid.
Ama snorted as she took off into the air, her nose keeping track of Jiji even when her eyes couldn’t see her. Finally, after what seemed forever, she had caught back up to him. “Jiji...you shouldn’t just go running off like that. What if you got hur…” The scent caught her attention. It smelled of storms and electric. She glanced down and sucked in a breath, sending information on what she’d just seen back to Kilian. “Jiji that’s a nest.”

Though Amadia caught up with him, her warning came too late, only half registering in Jiji’s brain as he started to plummet downward, full attention honed on the beasts below. The air sizzled with energy, electricity rippling like spiderweb currents through the air, and Jijikko felt his pulse beat faster in his chest, thrumming to buzzing hum of the kiandri dragons’ magic that tingled through his wings with every beat.
A hunt.
A real hunt.
As soon as he closed in on them, he roared, drawing the attention of the full nest, which — upon closer inspection — was a bit more heavily occupied than he bargained for. Nine dragons. All of various sizes and ages within the spectrum expected of kiandri, but one hundred percent focused on him. Then, they roared back.
When the first CRACK of lighting split the air and buried itself in the sand inches from Jijikko’s left wing, he felt the first wary stutter of his pulse. That was not the warm hum of latent magical energy, but a focused, aggressive attack, and moments later, he had three more bolts to deal with, his gaili magic only just barely constructing a defensive arch of earth over his head in time to avoid the final one.
Snarling, he charged inwards.
